Born in 1929 in Washington, D.C., US. Anthropologist and shamanologist. Ph.D. in anthropology in 1963 from the University of California, Berkeley. Teaching at UC Berkeley, Columbia University, Yale University. Five decades of research on shamanism in indigenous cultures. Developed Core-Shamanism. 1979 Founder and long-time President of the Foundation for Shamanic Studies.
