ON THE COVER Kelsey O’Donnell charges her way into a second place finish in A 200 at the OSDR Watermelon Bash down in Punta Gorda. Flip to page 27 to read more about how Kelsey’s season is going.

EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to 2022! I can’t believe we are already at this point in this season. I hope everyone had a great holiday break and I am sure everyone is just as excited as I am to get into the thick of the FTR season. From now until Daytona Bike Week (early March) it seems like we are full throttle with four hare scrambles and one enduro.

I want to encourage everyone here to attend a hare scramble commitee meeting to voice their opinions and truly learn the ins and outs of how these events go on and why certain rules are made. For instance at the last commitee meeting there were a few emergency rule

changes that were voted on and passed that will be in effect immediately. These new rules are posted on page 12 of this magazine. The next committee meeting is at the Treasure Coast Hare Scramble in Indiantown, 7pm at sign up. I hope to see some of you there. I hope everyone is enjoying the magazine, I am always looking for new ideas and content! Feel free to message me on Facebook with any thoughts or concerns. Thanks again, Kurt Lucas

PREZ SAYS

Second half coming up As the holidays have brought a lot of family gatherings and a tremendous amount of blessings, it also means by the time you read this we are halfway through the season already. Where does the time go you ask, well for some of us preparing months in advance for a club event takes a lot of it. Prepping our equipment and rigs for a weekend of family camping and racing takes more time. Time seems like it’s something that all of us seem to run out of and there’s not much time for anything else. Day jobs, family responsibilities, school, church and chores all come into play when trying to balance our family life. I wanted to lead into this time thing as I have been wanting to bring a very important subject to the podium. As there has been a tremen-

dous increase of riders and families participating in our weekends of racing, it seems like our up and coming riders are missing something. When I say missing something, I mean the opportunity for our youth to come to an event with confidence, ability and believing in themselves. All of these items require knowledge, practice and time, but the most important item is knowledge and being taught the right way on how to do it. I have taken an interest in several of our up and comers and while keeping an eye on them during practice and race time, it has become a real eye opener watching everyone else. Knowing the basics of just riding a dirt bike anywhere is the basis for a fun, successful and safe adventure whether you are just riding, practicing or racing. Lets face it, our kids don’t like us parents to show them or tell them how to do things and therefore opportunities are missed. With any sport, being taught the right way early in the game will bring benefits, satisfaction, safety and fun. Bike set up along with rider ability are two of the major aspects of any kind of dirt bike activity. It doesn’t matter if your child is just riding for fun or competing for a desired position, learning how to ride their bike correctly is one of the most important things. As all of our safety team can tell you, some of these kids don’t even know how to pick up their bike or start it when they end up on the ground.

JANUARY 2022

Every little thing can contribute or take away from your child’s ability to have a safe and competitive event. But going back to the parent/child opportunity to learn and apply the basics can be a little difficult. Don’t get me wrong, there are many parents that have a great teaching relationship with their children, but some do not. But there is a solution, find you a rider, possible A or B rider that is willing to take a few minutes just to watch your child ride and maybe spend some time giving them a few tips or some “what not to do ‘’ type observations . I will guarantee that any one you ask would be willing to spend some time with your rider, even if it’s just one thing that can be worked on . Just getting the bike properly set up, which includes bars, levers and rear brake in the correct position can be a game changer. Give your child a chance to improve and if it takes the parent stepping back and letting somebody else help, everyone will benefit. Forget about becoming the next AA rider right now and figure out how your child can become a safer rider and gain confidence at the same time. Thanks for listening, Randy Faul

Excerpt from 12/11 HS Committee Meeting Minutes.... FTR HS Proposal by William Toreki, September 18, 2021. Proposal #_____1_________ I did some counting, and we consistently have more than twice as many Sunday AM riders than PM. Sunday AM field is getting HUGE with our higher turnouts, and will likely grow even more. It will even things out, but we will still have bigger field in morning. WATERMELON BASH HARE SCRAMBLE REPORT

photos by Jamey Perdue

The FTR Hare Scramble series headed south to “The Farm” for the Old School Dirt Riders Watermelon Bash. The race property, located east of Punta Gorda, had a great mix of fast fields, flowing woods and gnarly palmetto sections. The property provides a challenge for the trail makers over at OSDR. The property consists of mostly fields, with a narrow strip of woods that parallels the property line. It is tough to make a balanced track here but OSDR was able to create great trails for both Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday the club was able to utilize the south side of the property via a couple of creek crossings, this side of the

property featured palm tree ham- tini rounding out the top three. mocks that had excellent black John Hancock took the win in dirt and multiple racing lines. Quad Super Peewee B, Joshua Swantek took the win in Quad The peewee track had a great Peewee A and Anthony Schneimix as well with fast flowing der won the Quad Peewee B fields, palmetto sections and class. even a few jumps for the riders to catch some air on. Jacob For the 12:15 Mini race it was Wilson took home the win in Jake Mitchell taking home the Peewee A over Gavin Pepin overall win after some close racand Beau Scalzi. In Peewee B ing with Tyler Lamb and Clayton Miles Boyer took the win on Browning. Jorge Pereira had a his Cobra machine, Sebastian great ride finishing third overall LeBlanc Jr took the win in Peefrom the Mini B line. rowly missing out at the win. Cody Hopper also put down a solid race with a tenth overall and the Mini C win. There is a ton of young riders out there with great style and technique. The talent pool in FTR is growing and it is awesome to watch. Landon Lynn grabbed another overall in the 2 pm Saturday race aboard his pre-modern YZ 125, that ole’ two stroke was singing in the fast fields. Jimmy Moore grabbed another win in Junior A after battling with newcomer Jaden Palmer and title rival Gunner Williams. Dylan Braddy put down the heat with an eighth overall and a win in Junior B. Kyle McAfee continues to dominate the Evo class with his fourth win in just four races,

Paul Lucas grabbed his first win on the season in Pre-Modern Super Senior and Trevor Brown took home the win in Pre-Modern B. The Quad race on Saturday was great to watch, GNCC’s own Cole Richardson showed up and put on a clinic in the AA class. Two FTR veterans, Michael Relyea and Chuck Piper, rounded out the top three in Quad AA. Joey Ponte finished fourth overall and first in Quad A Open. This time of year is awesome for the quad race because a ton of GNCC pro riders show up and mix it up with the FTR fast guys. At the Watermelon Bash there were 11 quads in AA and that number will only go up until the start of the GNCC season.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

The track on Sunday got super rough, the fields developed some rough chop and the woods became very rooty. The Sunday only palmetto section was the toughest section on the track, the leaves were very high which blocked the riders vision making it near impossible to find a flow. I think almost every rider struggled in this section. It was also very hot and rider fatigue was the story of the day. The Sunday morning race featured a ton of fast guys per usual. Clay Lyons jumped out to an early lead and looked to be in control of the overall until a crash with another rider sent him flying into the bushes. This allowed Barry McCarty to grab his first overall of the season and a win in the Senior A class. Clay Lyons was

able to hold on for the Vet A win. Mose Howard has made his return to FTR racing this year and he has been having an excellent season in Super Senior A, he added to his win total at the Watermelon Bash. George Edwards took home a 15th overall and a win in Silver Master A. Kelsey O’ Donnell absolutely crushed it in Women A and finishing 17th overall. Kelsey would then go on to race A 200 in the afternoon race just 30 minutes after the morning race ended.

A couple of young guns duked it out for the Sunday 1pm overall with Alex Lugar and former GNCC XC3 Champ Jesse Ansley battling out for two hours with Lugar getting the best of Ansley at the end. The “Sandman” Garrett Edmisten finished third overall with Gawler Jr and Yahraus following behind. Korbin Dinkel continues to turn heads with another A 250 win, look for this kid in the AA ranks next season. Josh Tolken grabbed his second A Open

JANUARY 2022

win of the season after running down and passig Sean Benhart on the last lap. Logan Crawford continues his winning streak in A 200 with another win and flat tracker Jesse Janisch is starting to get this woods thing dialed in with a win in 30+. Max McNary would win the B Highpoint by five seconds over Jorge Penna and Angel Ramos Rasario took the C overall.

LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO SIT DOWN

by Keith Finnerty

Well we all know that riding Dirt Bikes is not the place to sit down. But I know there are many of you that are just like myself and find it very necessary to use the seats that the manufacturers gave us! I recently purchased a new to me KTM two stroke that I was very excited to go try. Being of a certain age and ability with limited time it was almost a month before I got to ride. The first outing was so positive; the new bike was such a big change from my old faithful friend! The new bike was much younger and possessed lots of fresh upgrades that the old friend was just not willing to try out. The new bike even had a Rekluse Clutch that promised not to stall or lug even if I tried to do either. The new steed seemed to have a very bright fresh appearance. “Bold New Graphics” and plastic that just could not be put on my old friend made for a sexy appearance that demanded attention. One Item that usually catches my eye was the high-end aftermarket seat. This one was a Total Seat Concepts model that looked very cool! I can tell you I thought it was

destiny that we were able to get together. The first date took a bit for each of us to warm up to the other but soon we were feeling right at home. The bikes power delivery and suspension were way above my old bike and the desire to go do it again and again first ride I completely ignored the slight irritation of saddle soreness and wrote it off as just needing to get back to riding again. Since my Rides seem to come along a little more infrequently then in my younger days, it was a while before I noticed a problem. Four or five events we were together and I noticed that not only was my skin and tuches bothered by our time together, The highly protective riding pants I wore had suffered irreversible damage!! Close inspection of the seat material and a complete unfamiliarity of the new coverings prompted me to contact the local seat guru for advice. Seat Concepts had two simple answers … This particular seat is the most “aggressive” they have. It is designed for maximum grip for control and is not

JANUARY 2022

designed for leisure and comfort. I could or should stand more and use the grip feature in tight corners. Or try a different seat! So, with a little direction and approval from my new friend we went looking for something we would both enjoy! Seat Concepts had many different choices offering things neither of us had thought we needed or wanted. With some gentle encouragement and putting our fears behind us we found something that worked for us both. Sleek black hand stitching made my new friend feel proud and happy and a wide area with extra padded cushion kept me ready to ride in the seated position I prefer. Both of us are very happy now. I look forward to seeing you all on the trails if you come up behind me and whistle, I know you will have noticed my great Seat Concepts Seat.

CATCHING UP: KELSEY O’DONNELL For this month’s edition of “Catching Up” I decided to contact long time FTR member Kelsey O’Donnell to see what she has been up to this season. Kelsey has recently taken advantage of a new rule that allows for racers to race multiple classes in one day. A feat that only a few have decided to take on. KL: Hey Kelsey, thanks for reaching back out to me for this little interview. How’s it going? KO: It is going good! Thank you for reaching out to do this. KL: First things first, I have seen you around the FTR races for as long as I can remember. Exactly how long have you been involved with FTR? KO: Oh man, well I have been racing FTR on and off for 27 years now. More on than off in that duration. KL: Wow, you have me beat by a few years for sure. What classes are you racing these days?

KO: Well right now I am racing a few different classes. On Saturday I race the Evolution class and then I race Women A and A 200 on Sunday, as well as Women in the FTR Enduro series. KL: Sure sounds like you keep a busy weekend race schedule. I have noticed that you have been racing both the morning and afternoon on Sunday. What made you decide to compete in both races on Sunday? KO: For the last 10 years I have raced on both Saturday and Sunday back-to-back and I have always thought it would be cool to race as much as possible on the weekend. Now with the new rule change in effect I am able to “double-up” on Sunday’s. Trust me if I had a quad I’d be out there during their race too. KL: I couldn’t imagine racing that much. I am smoked after my race on Sunday afternoon. What is the toughest part of doing both races?

KO: I’d say the blisters but other than that it is getting changed and prepping the bike for the next race. Sometimes it is only a 30-minute window and if anything is wrong with the bike from the morning race it is definitely a small amount of time. KL: God forbid you have to change a flat or anything, that alone would make me too tired to race. What are your goals for this year? KO: I have been training more this year than I have in the past 27 years with the main goal of finishing Top 3 in the afternoon “men’s” class as well as winnning the Hare Scramble and Enduro Championships in the Women’s classes. KL: Sounds like some great goals to have and with your results you look well on your way to achieving them. Best of luck for the rest of the year and thank you for your time!
