ON THE COVER Glenn Peroni hops through some deep sand whoops at the Snake River Hare Scramble back in January. Glenn would go on to finish second in Silver Master A this past Hare Scramble season.
EDITOR’S NOTE For most, wthe summer break offers families and racers to hang out and take a little break from dirt bike racing. Some families will go on a vacation, wash the motorhome, or just hang inside to avoid the brutal Florida heat. But for some the break is an opportunity to do some out-of-state riding and racing. I jumped on that train by racing at the Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge up in Central Alabama. It seemed like this year there was a huge number of FTR members at the event. It almost felt like another July 2022
FTR Hare Scramble! This year Ronnie Hames at HBD Motografx and Ol’ Red Racing Prodicts hooked us with some sweet team graphics and had us looking good. Unfortuantely we didn’t have the same success as last year and finished up third in Expert, one place behind Sarasota Powersports, another FTR team. Ah well! It was still just as fun as ever! Thanks for reading! Kurt Lucas

Summertime Opportunities
some of us that have a grocery list of items that just can’t seem to get done during the season. Of course first things first, the bike has to be on point with new this and that and the rig has to be prepped and ready to pull out at any given time. The other grocery list items that need to be addressed around the house can be scheduled accordingly at some point and time. I’m sure there will be discussion on these unsolved opportunities and the law will probably be laid down, but it might be better to pay now and play later, just saying.
As we grind through the dog days of summer, it will be no time and we will be loading up again and heading to a cow pasture. Getting the chance to regroup always has its benefits as I’m sure there are
As I have mentioned in my previous articles, if you don’t do anything else to get ready for the upcoming season, get your FTR and AMA memberships NOW, your children’s minor release cards
NOW, don’t stand in line signing up for these three things at the first race. We have ten solid Hare Scramble races this season with a possibility of three more clubs securing property. Starting off our season with September 4th being the first Enduro and following up three weeks later with the very popular Croom Enduro promoted by Suncoast Trailblazers, these events will give you the opportunity to knock the dust off and find out how that summer training program worked for you. All in all, there are 17 events on the schedule that you can participate in. I hope everyone has a great summer and put in some seat time as our season is just around the corner. Thanks for listening,
ATTENTION SPORTSMAN RIDERS per FTR President Randy Faul... A quick note to all you SPORTSMAN riders, FTR has had many, many complaints about your conduct, riding antics, blowing through double greens, cutting the course, aggressive riding, parking other riders and basically it has turned into a circus. I made this known at the benefit race on the starting line that FTR is watching and will be proactive this coming season.
This class was designed to introduce riders that have never participated in an Hare Scramble event before and to allow those that can’t ride on Sunday or just wants ride with their buddies an opportunity to do that, it was not intended to be a full blown win at all costs pro event with disregard of our rules and sportsmanship. We will have riders that are faster than you in the class watching, observing and taking numbers, there will be no if, ands, buts or protests, you will be gone. If that doesn’t work, then this season FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
will determine if FTR decides to completely eliminate the Sportsman class and force you to ride a regular class or walk away and don’t ride. As always and like anything else, there are always a few bad apples that ruin it for everyone and we know that, therefore the effort to remove the problem riders will be our priority. Race with respect and stop endangering the other riders is all you have to do.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER ish…”. On this particular Saturday, Betty told me, “ you’re cutting off at noon and we’re going to the movies.”. I tried a few excuses but to no avail. Jurassic World here we come.
Starting Line to Checkered Flag… “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 Spending time with Him and spider bites…. In my April article, I wrote about letting God recharge, renew and restore us during the off season. Sometimes God has to remind me of my own messages. That’s what happened over the last two weeks. I had been working 6 days a week for about 3 weeks straight. My time with Miss Betty is precious to me and yet “there was work I had to fin-
While at the movies, I noticed my left hand (dominant hand) was hurting slightly. No big deal, must have just bumped it somewhere. By Sunday night my hand looked like a baseball mitt and my arm, almost to the shoulder looked like a bright red tree branch. We went to the Doctor the next day and got antibiotics. On Tuesday, we returned. The Doctor met us in the waiting room and pointed to the hospital. For the next 6 days, I was hooked up to IVs, stuck with needles more times than I could count and of course, awakened in the middle of the night by a friendly nurse or tech asking me, “Are you asleep???” Now for those wondering, I am home and healing (still have a ways to go, but much better).

During that time, something amazing happened. I had an ongoing conversation with Jesus, with Him doing much of the talking. He had to literally put me in bed to make me, “Step out of the traffic! Take a long, loving, look at me, your High God, above politics, above everything.” (Psalm 46:10). I took that long look at Him. I found that “He refreshes my soul, He guides me along the right paths for his names’ sake.” (Psalm 23:3). Further He gave me a peace about not only the medical condition but future directions and concerns. “Peace I leave with you, my (Jesus’) peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” I am practicing what I preach. God has all of it handled if you just take the time to talk, listen and most of all trust HIM. Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

FTR AT THE 24 HOUR CHALLENGE
Story by Kurt Lucas
While it is not an FTR sanctioned event the Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge in Maplesville, Alabama draws a huge crowd of FTR members, so I decided to do a little write up about the event. The Perry Mountain Motorcycle Club has been putting on this event for over 20 years and they do an outstanding job. This year’s event sold out with 125 team entries and pit row was absolutely slammed!
This event is one of a kind and is a true test to both racer and machine. This is my third year competing in this event, last year our team, Blue Calf Semi-Factory Racing, took home the win in Expert and were looking to repeat. This year’s team, now backed by Ol’ Red Racing Products/HBD Motografx, consisted of the same riders as last year: Tommy Hill, Shawn Clark, Clay Lyons, FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
Martin Cox and myself. The only difference was our sixth rider, Alex Mitz, was unable to race this year so we picked up Joey Medina to take over. Ol’ Red Factory Fresh Racing was equipped with matching graphics so looking fast was never in doubt. We had a few familiar faces as competitors in the Expert class this year: Sarasota Powersports, Team L-Cross, Slightly Stoopid and Team Enduro all consisted of FTR members.
HBD Motografx had the bikes looking “Factory Fresh” Shawn Clark and I made the eight-hour drive up from the Tampa area to Central Alabama on Thursday. We got there with just enough time for an ebike ride on the course. I could tell right away that this year’s conditions would be less than favorable with it being very dry. The track consisted of a lot of fast, flowy wooded sections that featured many hills and stumps as some of the land had been recently clear-cut. Normally the dust doesn’t bother me but at night the vision is very limited and can be a bit frustrating at times.
the Slightly Stoopid team. This is when things started to go downhill as Max managed to get two flat tires about a mile into the lap. Nick and I kept going as Max headed back, a few miles later Nick somehow managed to get a stump stuck in his rear wheel, destroying the wheel and derailleur. We were stuck. We found a service road and managed to head a few miles in the wrong direction. Next thing we know we are about 25 minutes away from the pits, by car. Luckily Max had made it back and was able to hop in my van and come track us down.
On Friday we got our team signed up and started setting up our pit area. This year we were able to pit beside Sarasota Powersports who absolutely dialed in our area with floor coverings, fans, a trailer with tools and extra parts. It really felt like a factory effort, thanks Mike Hall! After getting setup I went on another ebike ride around the track, this time with Max McNary and Nick Doerr of
Saturday morning came around and the excitement started to flow through the pits. Shawn Clark was the starter for our team and after watching the preview video 793 times he was ready to lay down some heaters. 10am rolled around and the race began with Shawn Clark getting an amazing start and leading the Expert class around on the first lap. After three strong laps July 2022 Photo by Kenneth King

Photos courtesy of Perry Mountain M/C Shawn’s first session was done and Clay Lyons was up next. The team quickly realized that our strategy of doing three laps at a time was going to have to change, with some riders doing two laps. The track was so rough and choppy, and it was scorching hot, minimizing fatigue was the new strategy if we wanted to end this race strong and upfront. I was fifth in the rotation and as my turn was approaching, I began to get nervous. I was recently coming off two ankle/foot injuries and I hadn’t ridden very much before this event. I knew I
was in for a struggle. I was right, it was like I forgot how to ride out there. I was making mistake after mistake and after my two laps were over, I contemplate packing my stuff up and going home, I was the weakest link on our team. A few hours into the event we settled into a good pace and were running a strong second in Expert. The NAP/XCGear team was on the move and they put quite the gap on us. As the race went on, we knew were going to be in the fight for second with none other than Sarasota Powersports. As the
race began to close it was up to Shawn Clark to close over two minutes on Korbin Dinkel, FTR A 250 Hare Scramble Champion. Korbin rode amazing and we were unable to close that gap, we finished third in Expert and fifth overall. Although we didn’t repeat, we still had such a great time. Heading home I swore I would not race this event again the next year, but here I am typing out this report already getting excited for the 2023 24 Hour Challenge. Thanks to all who put on this event

MotoPT: IMPROVE YOUR MOVE Do You Have Low Back Pain? Just Walk it Off! Hello FTR Family. Let’s start this month’s column by discussing something that 80% of us will deal with at some point in our lifetime, low back pain (LBP). LBP was the number one reason for missed work days in the United States. More work days were missed for LBP than for any other condition, including the common cold.1 I am sure you can imagine in the pandemic world we now live in, LBP is now the number two reason for missed days of work in this country. I need to define the type of LBP we will discuss today: non-specific LBP. This means the LBP is not attributed to a known pathology such as infection, fracture, or nerve root compression. Non-specific back pain is located below your ribs and above your pelvis without radiating nerve symptoms that go down your leg. The anatomy of the lumbar spine consists of five lumbar vertebrae (L1L5) that interact with one another as adjacent motion segments. Between the central portion of each lumbar vertebrae is the intervertebral disc. We consider two adjacent vertebrae and the disc in between them to make up a complete lumbar spine motion segment. For example, L4-L5 and the disc between those vertebrae would be named the L4-L5 motion segment. Each motion segment has an individual synovial
joint, one for each side. These synovial joints are similar to most joints in your body (elbow, knee, etc.). The joints in your lumbar spine are the type that slides on one another or gap/compress. They don’t bend like most synovial joints, such as your knee, for example.
sistently study the benefits of medication versus physical activity and other non-medication type treatments such as pain education and physical therapy for LBP.2 When you look at the multitude of studies, you can draw several conclusions about the long-term management of LBP.
With the multitude of joints in your spinal column, the gliding (sliding) of all these joints cumulatively causes movement in the four cardinal planes or rotation if the joints are compressing on one side and gapping on the other. It’s easiest to put your hands upright in a football field goal position and move your body to mimic the biomechanics of how your lumbar spine moves. For example, if you hold your arms in the field goal position and rotate to the left you will notice that your left forearm goes straight backward (gaps), and your right forearm goes forward (compresses). If you bend directly sideways to the left, you will notice that your left forearm dips downward toward the ground (downslide), and your right forearm slides upward towards the ceiling (upside). These motions occur at multiple motion segments in your lumbar spine each time you move. When you consider the robust anatomy and structure of the lumbar spine, you can see our spines were built to absorb forces and move with the rest of our body. Movement is the best medicine for your lumbar spine. Researchers con-
The first and most crucial lesson is that movement is medicine for our spine. We have learned that the type of movement or activity matters less than we used to think. Still, when you consider movement or exercise type approaches against other medical approaches, exercise is usually the long-term winner for non-specific LBP. I meant what I said in the title, if your back hurts, walk it off, and keep walking daily. Start going for daily walks, and work from a low time of 10 minutes up to 30-minute walks. Even a generic group exercise program can benefit you tremendously if you have chronic LBP.3 There are so many benefits that a simple exercise like walking provides us if we have LBP, it would be difficult to do them all justice in the space of this magazine. And suppose you maintain moderate or vigorous exercise as part of your healthy lifestyle. In that case, you are significantly less likely to experience LBP again for the next four or more years.4 Trust me, exercise works!
FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS
When should you not walk it off or perform some other type of physi-
cal activity, you ask? Well, when the movement seems to increase your symptoms linearly. For example, if your LBP is due to stiffness of the joints or muscles along your spine guarding (protecting) your back, it might be uncomfortable when you first walk. You might notice that your steps are shorter, and your overall feeling is that you don’t want to continue for the first 5-10 minutes. That is ok; you will gradually loosen up over time. Once you get over the initial discomfort, your body will warm up your muscles, your joint surfaces will become better lubricated, and you will begin to feel better. But if your pain or discomfort did not diminish, or your LBP is acute, you might want to give a few days rest before trying again. Don’t forget this excellent advice is valid for 90% of the LBP you are likely to experience, not the type of low back pain where you are compressing on a nerve root or directly after a traumatic accident. The second conclusion we can take from all the literature on LBP is that understanding the facts about LBP and how our body interprets the feedback from the environment is a vital piece of the rehabilitation process. We call this pain science education, which is simple to explain and understand. Suppose your physical therapist or medical doctor takes 5 minutes to explain why you feel a painful sensation. In that case, you’re less likely to have a chronic pain problem down the road and better manage the pain you are experiencing at the moment.2,5 When we train our body physically, we also train our brain. We have found that repetitively orienting the patient’s brain in the direction of lumbar movements using smartphone applications or flashcards can dramatically reduce both pain level and the firing of pain centers of the brain.6,7 Before you start any new exercise program, I highly recommend you
consult a physical therapist or physician for a general health and physical activity readiness screening. If you are experiencing LBP, it is always beneficial to have a complete evaluation by a physical therapist or physician. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at contact@motopt.com. Let’s IMPROVE YOUR MOVE so you can ride better this season!

PRODUCT REVIEW: SEAT CONCEPTS SUPER GRIP SEAT COVER
I have used Seat Concepts the last few years and they have great products; they are very durable, and the ribbed seat covers really prevent unwanted sliding on the seat. When I picked up my new Husqvarna FC 350 from Sarasota Powersports the first thing I did was call Randy Faul and order a Seat Concepts seat cover. Randy was nice enough to install the cover for me and when I went and picked it up, I noticed this particular cover had rubber sides with raised hexagons. Randy told me this cover provided maximum grip and he asked me to give it a try and provide a review on the product.
review by Kurt Lucas
I first tested the cover out at the world famous Croom Motorcycle Area and I could instantly feel the insides of me knee catching the rubber sides, preventing me from sliding back. I was instantly impressed with how much grip this product provided. The next time I rode was at the Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge in Alabama. The fast, choppy hills were the perfect test for a gripper seat. Again, I was thoroughly impressed with how well this seat cover kept my butt on the seat, even after being up for over 24 hours barely holding onto the bike as the race came to an end.
The raised ribs on the top of the seat provide traction while also allowing the rider to slide up and down the seat at their desire. The ribs are sewn on and are very durable, I had my previous seat cover for over two years with no issues. The rubber sides only add to the durability while also providing ultimate traction. The SuperGrip Rubber knee panel offers superior grip even in wet, muddy or slippery conditions, and resists wear from knee braces better than any seat cover on the market. I give this product a 10 out of 10. If you’re interested in learning more about this product be sure to look for Randy Faul at the races, he usually has a few seat covers to look at and would be more than happy to talk to you about the benefits of a Seat Concepts seat.
