Greetings from the dog days of summer where the grass is crunchy and everyone is watching the radar. Here we are going into the summer months where some of us change gears and look at other alternatives for our recreation needs and one of those fun spots is our annual banquet. Happening on July 15, what better way to get away for a couple days and enjoy some different scenery, of course some kind of bench racing will start somewhere and carry well into the night. We can’t reveal anything yet as schedules and commitments have to be met first, but we will have two big hitters in the offroad community lined
up to grace our stage, I will be making the call as we get closer and hoping there is no conflict. Our FTR sponsors have really stepped up this year and will offer a lot of swag, products and support for our membership this coming event.
On a couple side notes, you Sunday boys in the PM race might want to get ready for a full 2 hours of competition as the race time was increased to 30 minutes, so trips to croom or your local practice track might be in order this summer. Also, all you guys that’s been around forever (me included) and are still able to run to your bikes without a cane or walker, welcome to the Legends +70 class starting this season. Along with
an Elite A and B class now we should have full gate as more and more are turning that age where we just want to ride with our buddies and have a good time, of course that gets thrown out the window when we hear that “10 seconds”. All in all our summer break will be gone before we know it and it will be time start packing the campers, trailers and vans. Hope everyone has a great summer and come in healthy for round one of our enduro series on 9-3 and 9-24 along with our first HS at the end of September.
Thanks for listening
Randy Fauling.
She’s like a trading ship that sails to faraway places and brings back exotic surprises.
She’s up before dawn, preparing breakfast for her family and organizing her day.
Her clothes are well-made and elegant (and frequently covered in dust and sometimes mud), and she always faces tomorrow with a smile.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
I had the privilege of serving on the “Pit Mom’s committee. Watching these amazing ladies working behind the scenes (and frequently up on the line or in the gas stops!) it reminded me how special and blessed these Moms are.
Proverbs 31:10-31 tells us, “A good woman is hard to find, and worth far more than diamonds.
Her husband trusts her without reserve, and never has reason to regret it.
Never spiteful, she treats him generously all her life long. She shops around for the best yarns and cottons, (and parts, gloves, helmets…) and enjoys knitting and sew-
She looks over a field (or a good set of body armor) and buys it, then, with money she’s put aside, plants a garden.
First thing in the morning, she dresses for work, rolls up her sleeves, eager to get started.
She senses the worth of her work, is in no hurry to call it quits for the day (or after the kid’s race is finished).
She’s skilled in the crafts of home and hearth, diligent in homemaking (and taking care of the RV).
She’s quick to assist anyone in need, (especially another pit mom and their kids)
reaches out to help the poor. She doesn’t worry about her family when it snows (or rains, or gets too hot)
their winter clothes are all mended and ready to wear.
Her husband is greatly respected
when he deliberates with the city fathers.
When she speaks she has something worthwhile to say, and she always says it kindly. She keeps an eye on everyone in her household, and keeps them all busy and productive (and hopefully winning!).
Her children respect and bless her;
her husband joins in with words of praise:
“Many women have done wonderful things, but you’ve outclassed them all!”
Charm can mislead and beauty soon fades.
The woman to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of-God.
Give her everything she deserves!
Adorn her life with praises!”
AMEN! Ladies you deserve all the praise!
Blessings on and off the road,
Jim and Betty Edleston CMAThe Board of Directors of FTR has decided that Pit Riding has become out of control, despite repeated warnings. The existing rules are being ignored, but starting IMMEDIATELY, all Pit Riding rules will be strictly enforced. Penalties will be issued, and no warnings will be given. Please see this link for the complete Pit Riding Rules, per FTR rulebook:
Some Key Points to remember:
• Unlicensed persons (includes anyone under 16) may NOT operate ANY motor vehicle at the event – EXCEPT their own race bike traveling to and from their competition event (including practice), AND they MUST be accompanied by a licensed person.
• Use of “one-wheels” and other motorized scooters and pit bikes by unlicensed persons, or anyone under 16, is NOT allowed. The only motorized vehicles which can be operated by someone under 16 are electric bikes WITH PEDAL-ASSIST.
• Speed limit for ALL vehicles (includes golf carts, competition bikes, and bicycles) is “FIRSTGEAR WALKING SPEED”.
• ALL vehicles (including bicycles) MUST have a Headlight after dark.
• PENALTIES may include required Disqualification which cannot be dropped for season points.
• See this link for COMPLETE Pit-Riding Rules: (http://www.floridatrailriders.org/uploads/2023-2024_docs/Pit-Riding-Rules.pdf).
• We ask ALL FTR Members to please help enforce these rules. If you see somebody in violation, please tell them to cease, or report them immediately to an FTR official.
Sorry to announce that our friend and club mate Art Whitney passed away yesterday. He was a longtime member of Suncoast Trail Blazers. He had been fighting health issues for years and was waiting for a lung transplant. He fought until the end and he will be missed. -
Scott DoerrHello
Happy off-season! I hope you took my advice from last month and temporarily avoided the repetitive impact and joint loading that riding creates, even for a little while. If that is the case, you probably feel your best since the last offseason. Your everyday racing season aches and pains are less severe, and those nagging ailments are being addressed so they don’t bother you next season. What’s that, you say? You are more sore than ever? Well, that was probably from racing the 24 hours of Perry Mountain, a brutal endurance race. Talk about not taking your PT’s advice! But seriously, we had a strong FTR showing and had some trophies won at the Perry Mountain 24 race, congratulations to those of you that raced.
Let’s talk a little more about underlying impairments. An underlying impairment is a causative factor in your musculoskeletal system, leading to other issues. Sometimes the underlying impairment is not clinically significant enough to cause symptoms, but it stresses and loads other tissues in your body that become symptomatic. One of my mentors used to say,
“Tendonitis is the result, not the root cause of the problem.” She means there is often an underlying problem, such as a mobility deficit at a joint, which causes the muscle and tendon that cross that joint to be abnormally loaded. Once the muscle or tendon is abnormally loaded long enough, it becomes inflamed or painful.
In this situation, if you directly treat the tendonitis, you will get relief, but usually, the comfort is short-lived, or the tendonitis comes back and tends to linger. Many of us can identify with musculoskeletal pain issues that repeatedly return despite treating them. This lack of accurate diagnosis of the underlying impairment is one of the risks of consulting the internet (i.e., Google, WebMD, etc.) for your symptoms rather than a trained medical professional. But if you find the causative factor, you can unlock the healing process and prevent future occurrences of that issue. The key is prevention rather than rehabilitation. It’s better to go through a set of tests and measures to find underlying problems rather than to treat them once they rear their head as resultant issues. I am happy to help you with this process.
Tomac’s season-ending Supercross injury might be an example of an underlying impairment. I am not convinced the degree of ankle dorsiflexion load he sustained with that minor overjump was enough to rupture his Achilles tendon if it was healthy. Although it is the most significant type of load on the tendon, it occurs repetitively every time we jump and land while standing on the balls of our feet. Any professional rider has loaded their Achilles in this way countless times without issue. Also, consider the Achilles tendon the strongest tendon in the human body. Forward-thinking orthopedic surgeons are currently using it for ACL reconstructions.
Tomac’s Achilles rupture seems to follow the pattern of high-level athletes that rupture their Achilles with a relatively minor incident. Look up David Beckham or Kevin Durant’s Achilles rupture videos, and you will see the same mechanical mechanism of injury. A normal tendon load for their sport was placed on their Achilles and caused it to rupture. Yes, I know there is much controversy with Tomac’s injury regarding foot pegs and boots he was
wearing/how he was wearing them. I’m still not convinced that there was not an underlying pathology in his left Achilles or an underlying impairment. A few simple tests and measures can screen out these underlying impairments and prevent catastrophic failure of the tissue. At the very least, if you know the underlying impairment, you can manage it better with more accurate information.
Before acting on any information in this article, I highly recommend that you consult a physical therapist or physician for a general health and physical activity readiness screening. If you are experiencing pain
while riding, it is always beneficial to have a complete evaluation by a physical therapist or physician.
If you have any questions or comments, please email me at contact@motopt.com, or call 904-395-5379.
Let’s IMPROVE YOUR MOVE so you can ride pain-free with MotoPT.

Photo: Dalton Anderson Location: Society Hill, SCDennis Matthew Batchie was born into this world on May 24, 2000.
A loving son to Dennis and Elizabeth and a wonderful younger little “buzzard” to Andrew.
Matthew lit the world with his presence from the time he started speaking. He was always ready for an adventure and loved riding his bike with his friends, from the minute he got home from school.
This is where his love for Dirt Bikes began. At the age of 7 Matthew attended his first Florida Trail Riders Event and there was no turning back after that.
Matthew became an avid rider spending every other weekend
competing and making memories with his friends.
Matthew was known for his huge heart, respectfulness, honesty and kindness on and off the track.
On May 17, 2017 God called Matthew to join him in heaven. Today Matthew is looking down on all of us with his huge smile and twinkle in his eyes, grateful that we are all helping to keep his memory alive by providing other children the ability to do the thing he loved most “Ride Dirt Bikes.”
Matthew will always be treasured and remembered dearly.
The Matthew Batchie foundation was started when Matt passed away to provide youth riders with any gear that they
might need because we knew how expensive it was for us to get Matt started.
We are going to be bring some slightly used and new gear to the banquet and anyone that might have a need is welcomed to it.
We have also been providing money to the Scholarship Fund and will be bringing a check again this year.
Matt loved riding more than anything else in the world, that is why we enjoy continuing to be a small part of FTR.
Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing you all at the banquet - The Batchie Family

Photo: Jamey PerdueThe offseason provides a time for FTR members to sit back and recharge. Some members plan “non-dirtbike” vacations, do house work, or just sit back and relax... Let’s face it, we are all wired to be on-the-go, its a racing thing. So for most members their summer breaks usually include some sort of activity to keep the adrenaline flowing. Whether its driving to the infamous RedBud
Track and Trail to qualify for the Loretta Lynn’s Amatuer National, competing in the Perry Mountain 24 Hour Challenge or booking a fishing trip with Mellow Mangrove Charters FTR members sure know how to keep the fun rolling and make the best of their offseason.
