EDITOR’S NOTE Wow, this season is flying by already. By the time you read this we will have had three hare scrambles and three enduros and we will be right in the thick of the season. I hope everyone has been enjoying themselves through this first part, these next few months are my favorite part of the season. We are getting into some cooler weather and we have some great evens coming up! It is crazy how much I forget how fun these events are. We all work during the week and have a ton of stuff going on in our lives but come friday afternoon that all seems to

go away as we enter the race property. Camping with friends and hanging out with thousands of others that share the same passion is truly an amazing experience. If you have an ideas for the magazine send them my way. I have had a ton of people come up to me at the races with their thoughts and ideas and I really do appreciate all the insight. Feel free to send me an email with what you would like to see ftreditor@floridatrailriders. org

PREZ SAYS to move over to the Cox Road property. Apparently the site of our last two races was going to be used for some more mining. So with September already here and we just got booted off our property, time was not on our side for the move. Equipment, trailers and tools had to be moved over to our now “new race property”. As we were all in disbelief, the wheels were already turning on a lay out and where we could go. Some Old and Some New Heading into some cooler months always sounds good but on the other end; we lose a bunch of daylight as the days get shorter. Somehow I don’t remember that part about being dark at 6 o’clock especially when you have all these projects waiting to be dealt with. Speaking of projects, I hope everyone got all that done this summer as it’s time to go racing with two events already in the books. I was able to attend and participate in HS 1 but had to miss number 2 as my club is the third round and I was chained to the property for the entire weekend. This year we had a surprise from the landowner as we had already hung some ribbon on some new woods on the property we used last year. As I called to set up our work weekends, the surprise was we had

We know the property pretty well but that property is one of the toughest areas to work in as there is no pounding in stakes or drilling post holes as the ground is like concrete, unless it rains. We will have had our event by the time you read this as I am part of the reason this issue is a little late, well maybe, cause we got the one and only Mr. go fast himself Kurt Lucas running the magazine and can make up time like no tomorrow. I am hoping everyone is liking the MotoTally sign up and scoring system as it has been in effect since the first event. Please remember to bring your helmet to sign up for a scan and check for your correct class. Also, please keep our local dealers in mind when needing repair parts or accessories as they support our series and are there when you need them. They all carry your favorite brands or can get it. FTR’s major sponsors like Moose Racing, Parts Unlimited, NOVEMBER 2021

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, FMF and Engine Ice are all available through your local dealer. These companies continue to support our series, our banquet and produce superior products. FTR continues to grow and with that comes some growing pains but we are constantly looking at ways to improve and make your series the best it can be. We are in the process of fixing the peewee’s and their schedule, but it takes a little time to research all the possibilities of improving the system, it’s a top priority for us. Be patient as this doesn’t happen overnight but will happen. We have a great team of volunteers that has the best interest of FTR and its members and will always do what’s best for FTR. Our participation numbers are continually increasing with every event and with that comes some unsolved opportunities but these issues are being developed into positives. I also just wanted to welcome a long time friend and riding buddy all the way from Idaho to come race our series. He is committed to every event this year and has already found himself at home in the Silver Master A class. Welcome Lendon Smith. Thanks for listening Randy Faul

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Starting Line to Checkered Flag… “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 During Bike Week each year (FTR schedule permitting) I go to the Daytona 200 Road Race at the Daytona International Speedway. As many of you know, I am a motorcycle history nut and antique bike lover. I literally live on the old beach course. I have been attending the 200 since my junior year in high school (please don’t do the math…I feel old enough already!) At the race this year a “situation” occurred. One of the private security personnel came across two pee wees riding their bikes in a field at the track. Dad was watching them and they were riding slowly. At their age, they are not allowed to ride on speedway property (similar to our pit rules). Maybe the security guard had

a bad experience earlier. Instead of politely asking the kids to stop, he yelled at them. The kids got scared, with one of them almost laying his bike down. The Dad stepped in and it got worse. Thankfully the Dad kept his cool, apologized and the guard drove off. Classic example of right motive, wrong response. Point is, we all can get caught up with right motives but wrong responses or actions. The Apostle Paul made it a point to compare the body of Christ to the human body. While each part is different and performs an individual function, each part needs the others for the body to work. As racers and those who are believers in Jesus, we are maturing, growing and changing. What we need to keep in mind is that we are one. We need to practice unity. In 1 Peter 3:8, Paul wrote, “Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Note that the word “mind” is used first with unity and then with humble. It is hard to unify if everyone thinks they are “right”.

NOVEMBER 2021

I have seen it at our races. Two riders, both exhausted, come in to the checkered. One feels he was cut off by the other and the shouting begins. All the while, kids are watching… and learning. Paul also wrote in Colossians 3:14, “And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” And there is the key…love. The love Jesus demonstrated, even for those who crucified Him. We will always have differing views whether it’s at a race or in our daily lives. It is the love of Jesus that “binds us together in perfect harmony”. God promises that if we keep a cool head and attempt to agree with one another, He will do his part as well. 2 Corinthians 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice. Aim for restoration, comfort one another, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. It doesn’t get any better than that! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

WHAT’S NEW? HARE SCRAMBLE COMMITEE MEETING MINUTES 9/18/2021 NEW BUSNESS FTR HS Proposal by William Toreki, September 18, 2021. Proposal #_____1_________ I did some counting, and we consistently have more than twice as many Sunday AM riders than PM. Sunday AM field is getting HUGE with our higher turnouts, and will likely grow even more. Here is the data for 5 random races last season. Idea is to move Vet A, B, and C to Sunday PM. It will even things out, but we will still have bigger field in morning. Would make for less congestion, and probably safer. Chart shows numbers before and after adjusting. This would also eliminate two rows needed on Sunday AM (or make room to split some other rows). 7 for 6 against Proposal # 2 to add Golden Master c and Silver Master c classes Dear Executive Committee and Hare Scramble Committee Members, Within the last several months I have been contacted by quite a few older riders with basically the same question ... Why isn’t there a 55+ and 60+ C class in the FTR Hare Scramble series? Due to medical issues, I have personally missed the last 14 years of racing. Coming back into the series I completely understood the current class structure. I knew that at 60 years old my options to ride in a C

class were fairly limited. In my personal case, I opted to ride the Master (50+) C class because that was the oldest age class with a C designation. I ride quite a lot in the Ocala National Forest and I’m always coming across older riders that don’t race anymore. Their primary reason seems to be that there is not a C class for advanced age riders. It is very apparent when looking at the numbers that there is a demographic shift in the ages of active riders. Fifteen to twenty years ago there was a handful of advanced age riders (55-up). Today we see NEW riders starting their riding careers at later stages of life. Why shouldn’t they be afforded the opportunity to ride in a class with their peers? Several of us have put our heads together to come up with a proposal that has limited change to the race format and could be implemented fairly easily and takes care of this situation. We have looked at the way the current races are run and basically just would like to see the two classes created. No row changes would be required. Many of the riders that these changes would effect are already starting on the Golden Master Band Silver Master Brows. Our proposal still lets everyone start on the same Row. Even with the addition of riders, these rows are not as large as, for example, the Senior C and SSR C rows. Additional documentation with justification will be provided at the Hare Scramble Committee meeting. I look forward to explaining this idea

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

and would appreciate any support. I can be reached at (352) 8166528 if there are any questions. I’d also like to say that I appreciate the opportunity to submit this proposal. Respectively submitted, WTMartin Vote 7 for 6 against Emergency rule change to allow utility quads to run in the AA class once a rider goes to the AA class, they must appeal to the HS committee to move to any other class. Vote 10 for 3 against Brent Ashworth Appealed to the committee to allow him to stay in the A class after placing in the top 10 overall in the previous season. Vote 14 for 0 against Motion to adjourn 8 PM

PRODUCT REVIEW Ol’ Red Racing Products: Clean Chain Synthetic Lube Ol’ Red was kind enough to send over some of their Clean Chain Synthetic Lube to test out and I absolutely love this stuff. This product comes in a 6fl oz. bottle, about half the size of the competitors but because of the viscosity of the liquid it lasts just as long as most other chain lube. The MSRP is just $12.99. Ol’ Red’s Chain Lube is quite a bit different than most chain lubes in that it doesn’t “gunk” up and leave a messy, foamy residue. This product is more of a liquid, than a foam which leaves no mess and further prevents wear and tear on your chain and sprockets. The Ol’ Red Chain Lube leaves a glossy finish over your chain, which allows the chain to be smooth as butter. The best part about this product is that it can be used on most chains, including mountainbike chains. This lube works better than any bicycle specific lube I have used in the past. For more information on this product and many other Ol’ Red products stop by the HBD MotoGrafx tent at any FTR Hare Scramble. NOVEMBER 2021

CROOM ENDURO RACE REPORT Once again the Croom Enduro was super gnarly. The 45th installment of this infamous race took place just outside of the Croom OHV area and the dry conditions made it one of, if not the toughest race of the year. With the event taking place on state land the club is limited on where they can route the trail. This causes some previous years trail to be used, making for a physically demanding race course. Like any trail in Florida rain is your friend, getting some added moisture during the week is guaranteed to make the trail hold up better. Well unfortunately there wasn’t much, if any, rain leading up to the event and the deep Florida sugar sand was in fullforce. This caused for very loose soil, making the four-foot sand whoops even harder to navigate. Adding to the challenge was the massive amount of dust, there were parts of the trail where you did not see much of teh ground. You just had to sort of feel it out with your bike, again, this was one tough race.

Fernando Davila navigates one of the many steep, sandy hills that can be found out at Croom - Photo by Tyler Miller FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

The 50 mile loop consisted of 5 tests, all unique from one another. Test 1 was by far the roughest test right out of the gate. You started on the motocross track located in the OHV park before exiting into the “mountainbike/hunting” side of the Croom Wildlife Management Area.

Test 1 started you off on a motocross track before entering the woods - Photo by Jamey Perdue

Once you went through the great you were greeted by deep, sharp sand whoops that went on for 12 miles. Mixed in with these whoops were a few technical sections that incorporated old sinkholes that litter the property. It is safe to say everybody was hurting after Test 1. Test 2 flowed awesome and featured some hidden black dirt that provided great traction, even in the dry conditions. This test was quite bit shorter than Test 1 which was a nice break. This test crossed the Croom mountainbike trail several times and utilized some of the more technical limerock sections the

property has to offer. Test 3 was another short one that weaved in and out of some palmetto scrub. The whoops were abundant in this test but it featured some big sweeping corners that allowed you to carry your speed and keep a good flow. The trail made its way back to the OHV park but not without featuring some of

NOVEMBER 2021

the largest sand whoops I have ever seen. The last half-mile of this test put years on my life and made me very happy to be headed back to the pits for a needed lunch break. After about a 30-minute break riders were lining back up to take on the final two tests of the event.

PAGE 19

Test 4, or known to some as “Nobleton”, is gnarly. It isn’t rough, it doesn’t have monster sand whoops or mud ruts. Nobleton is tight, and not just tight where you may clips your bars a few times, I am talking the only way to get through the trees is to clip them. Not only is it tight, but it features many offcamber corners, palmetto roots and vines. I’ve never witnessed more grown men cry then at the reset between tests 4 and 5. The 8 mile sections will wear you out more than ever before.

Which sets you up nicely for the 5th and final test. At this point everyone is toast and just ready to be done. Test 5 started out in an area that was just clear-cut so there were plenty of logs for racers to navigate before heading into some palmetto scrub that had, you guessed it, giant sand whoops. Test 5 was the second longest, but it felt twice as long as the first, and longest test.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

To sum it up the Croom Enduro is brutal but it is so rewarding at the same time. Those aches and pains that are felt until the next weekend are far more than worth it. If you have never raced this event it is a must try. Even if it is super gnarly. Huge thanks to the Suncoast Trail Blazers for putting on another stellar event. I know all of us racer appreciate all the hard work that goes into it! Until next year Croom Enduro!

COHEN’S CORNER

by Adam Cohen

So this month’s write up is going to be a little bit different than the usual race reports. A few weeks ago I picked up an E-Bicycle to use as a training tool and to be able to do some GNCC EMTB races in 2022. Well like most dirt bike racers I have a lack of patience and I found a race to attend on an off weekend of our FTR series. I made the long haul from North Miami Beach all the way to Gatorback (The mountain bike section of the park is actually referred to as Hailes Trail)! Prior to racing FTR I raced the mountain bike equivalent which is the Florida State Championship series(FSC) for 10 seasons. Goneriding (The promoter of the series) recently incorporated EMTB racing into their 2021 schedule so I signed up and went racing! The format for mountain bike racing is quite a bit different than our FTR races. On Saturday the course is open from sunrise to sunset and racers are able to run as many practice laps as they feel necessary. All of the racing takes place on

Sunday and it is split up into waves which are determined by age and riding ability. So let’s fast forward a bit and talk about the race! Well I can definitely say I knocked the rust off! The race was three laps so about 20-21 miles of awesome trail. Hailes Trail is built throughout an old rock quarry so you get a ton of elevation change for a race in Florida. It took me a little bit of time to remember how to race, as far as pacing, strategy and technique goes. After the halfway point of the race I was able to pick it up and finish with a 4th place which was solid considering it was my first race since 2019. I would absolutely recommend doing an MTB race to anyone that races dirt bikes as there is a ton of crossover and many things that you can learn that will improve your racing at the FTR series. Head over to Goneriding.com to learn a bit more about the series if you’re interested! The EBike is an awesome tool for racing and training and I’m glad that I added one to the stable! Next Month’s write up is going to be very different! We are

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

going to do a “Bike Check’’ with one of FTR’s fastest racers! Hope you all enjoyed a brief overview of my experience doing a little different type of racing. As usual please feel free to reach out to me with questions or recommendations for future write ups.
