EDITOR’S NOTE
Whew! It is finally starting to feel like race season! It has been a very weird start to the year but it feels great to get back on track!
It looked like we were only going to have eight, maybe nine, Hare Scrambles this year but with multiple clubs working together they were able to put together an eleven round Hare Scramble sched ule. There have been a ton of date and loca tion changes so make sure you take a look at the latest schedule at the back of this issue.
SADRA has some cool things going on for their race in December. First off they will be hosting another pan cake breakfast that will beneift the Matthew Batchie Foundation. Make sure to head over to that tent to grab some food, it is for a great cause.
They are are also putting together a water drive for Pastor Jim and a gift card drive for the FTR Safety Crew. More info on page 26.
Thanks for reading, Kurt Lucas
PREZ SAYS
by Dorothy Fleming DekmarThe Road Back to Normal
The FTR family and friends were over whelming with offering assistance, water, food and anything they had. It was a tremendous humbling experience hear ing from folks that were concerned and wanted to help in any way that would help us get on the road to recovery. I am still getting calls just to check in and see how we are doing. I spoke to some of you that were in the next county over and you were going through the same thing with trees down, debris everywhere, roofs leaking and just an all-around mess. Lead ing the crisis was the amount of rain and water that became a major
issue starting way up in the Bartow area, leading to the Peace River overfilling and dumping into the surrounding area. All in all everything is replaceable, rebuildable and we will move forward. Again, it is very humbling the amount of concern and help that was offered in this time of uncertainty. To all of our FTR friends, our FTR line men, EMS, medical, contractors and any other kind of services that our members belong to that were offering assistance. I speak for all of Southern Florida with a big THANK YOU!
Thanks for being their FRIENDS, Randy Faul.
Starting Line to Checkered Flag…
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7
Hog Waller was a blast! Betty and I thoroughly enjoyed the “early Halloween”. We got to meet so many families as they came by the CMA tent to Trick or Treat. Along with the candy that was given out, all the kids got Jesus coloring books, wrist bands, crosses and small toys. The older kids got “rag tracks” to clean their bikes.
In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 28, Jesus challenged His disciples to share His good news.
“16-17 Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their way to Galilee, headed for the moun tain Jesus had set for their reunion. The moment they saw him they worshiped him. Some, though, held back, not sure about worship, about risking themselves totally.
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
18-20 Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the prac tice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” At this time, Jesus had proven He is the Son of God by literally walking out of the tomb alive. He confirmed He was who He said He is and did what He said He would do. By believing in his resurrection and His desire to forgive our sins, we will all have the guarantee to overcome death and spend eternity with Him in Heaven.
Jesus met with His disciples to challenge and charge them to share His love and good news with the world. Betty and I had the privilege of sharing that good news with the families on Saturday night by giving out those special gifts.
In Isaiah 55:8-11 God confirms that even something as simple as a coloring book will spread His good news. 8-11 “I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work.”
God’s Decree. “For as the sky soars high above earth, so the way I work surpasses the way you work, and the way I think is beyond the way you think. Just as rain and snow descend from the skies and don’t go back until they’ve watered the earth, Doing their work of making things grow and blossom, producing seed for farmers and food for the hungry, So will the words that come out of my mouth not come back empty-handed.
They’ll do the work I sent them to do, they’ll complete the assign ment I gave them. For those who received those gifts at Hog Waller; take the time to read the words and spend the time with your kids as they fill in the coloring books. Jesus wants you to know Him as your Savior, Lord and best friend. Just ask Him. New season, New time! Please join us at “The Good Race” Joy Service, 7:00, Saturday night at the CMA tent!
Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

What is Arm Pump?
I hesitate somewhat because this seems to be a Pandora’s box type of topic, but let’s start a multi-part series about the dreaded arm pump. I say Pandora’s box because think of all the advice and causes of arm pump you’ve heard over the years. You’ve probably heard and read ev erything about treating arm pump from hydrate to ensure your electrolyte balance is checked to perform stretching exercises, ice, heat, etc. The truth is arm pump is not a simple topic to discuss due to the multifactorial nature of the issue (s). Some of the interventions discussed above could be helpful for one person or a waste of time for the next. It just depends on what is causing your arm pump. I think the best action plan this month is to explain precisely what arm pump is so we can understand it and discuss causes and treat ments in future columns from the same vantage point.
In medical terminology, arm pump is an exertional compartment syndrome, not to be confused with muscle cramps. You might have heard of compartment syndromes in emergencies, but this is different. Exertional compartment syn drome only comes with exertion; racing dirt bikes and ATVs is an extreme version of effort. In our forearms, just like every other area of our body, our musculoskeletal system is divided into distinct compartments. The compartments are bracketed by rigid structures such as bones and fascia. Fascia is the dense, irregular connective tissue that offers structural support properties
and often envelopes muscles as a sheath. You have likely come across fascial sheaths when trimming chicken breasts or field dressing an animal. It was the resilient, tough, and sometimes translucent tissue around the outside of the muscle. Within each compartment are muscles, tendons, blood vessels, and nerves, amongst other tissues. While riding on rough terrain, we hold onto the handlebars with our hands. There by contracting your forearm muscles repetitively, often never letting go throughout the ride. Your muscles require more blood flow to maintain the contraction because we can never let go of the handlebars; we keep pumping blood into the compartments of the forearm, but the blood is unable to get out. The muscles themselves swell with blood volume and start to take up more space in the compartment, eventually taking up too much space and compressing the arteries and nerves in your forearm. This explains why some people feel that their hands go numb, or they can’t move their fingers normally and they might whiskey throttle or grab too much brake by accident while having arm pump. By compromis ing the nerves and blood vessels with compressive forces, their ability to control the muscles of your hands diminishes temporarily.
What would make someone have an increased risk of arm pump? Not everyone gets it, so it must be a spectrum of causes, right? Correct! For example, if your fascial sheaths were extra tight, they were already creating a narrow com partment, so there is less volume before we start pumping blood into the area while riding. If
conservative management fails, surgery is the last option for these individuals. The surgeon will cut the fascial sheaths to open the compartment. If the fascial sheaths were the problem, this would fix it, which is why this type of surgery is common in professional athletes that have tried everything else. There are many interventions we can try before surgery, and the fascial sheaths are not always the problem, just one of many causes of arm pump.
Just because you are getting arm pump when you ride does not mean you should assume you have any of these conditions. Everything could be 100% fine anatomically speaking, Yet you could have arm pump simply by over-gripping the handlebars too hard. You could use grips on your dirt bike or ATV that are too wide or too narrow. Do you sit down a lot and use your arms versus your legs when you ride? That could be a signif icant factor in your arm pump issue. When you measure the grip strength of professional racers, it is not any higher than the average FTR racer, male or female. But they are less likely to struggle with arm pump because they don’t rely on their arms as much while riding. They use their body and especially their legs more. The easiest way to determine if it is your technique versus an actual problem is to come to see me at the races. Or see another qualified healthcare provider who can help you screen out the causes of the arm pump to see if there are treatable impairments.
The point is that EVERYONE can get arm pump if you grip too hard for too long, but some people are more susceptible to it based on their anatomy and medical history. If you have been to the gym and done an exercise at high repetitions to failure, you know what I am talking about. That ‘pump’ feeling would be the beginning of exertional compartment syndrome if it were to continue in severity. Even if you have been struggling with arm pump for years, visit me at the races; you might be surprised how much we can help your
arm pump or even alleviate it completely. Be fore you start any new exercise program, I highly recommend you consult a physical therapist or physician for a general health and physical activity readiness screening.
If you are experiencing pain while riding, it is always beneficial to have a complete evaluation by a physical therapist or physician. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at contact@motopt.com, or call me at 904-3955379. Let’s IMPROVE YOUR MOVE so you can ride pain-free with MotoPT.

2022 season kicked off at Hogwaller. With Vet classes moving to the afternoon, I decided to give AA a try this year. It is certainly a change of pace from the morning race. I really enjoyed racing with some super fast guys on the front line and I’m so thankful I can still compete at that level. It gets more difficult every year as my priorities have changed after having kids and running a financial firm.
I’m sure this year will have many ups and downs. Speaking of ups and downs, have you seen the stock market lately? You may not want to look at your most recent 401K or retirement account state ment. When I’m not at the races, my business part ner Chris Maxey and I run a financial firm focused on helping our clients retire. Our company is called Mosaic Financial Group because we help people put the pieces of their retirement together into one concise retirement plan.
It is years like this year that remind us of why fi-
nancial planning is so important. If you are getting ready for retirement in the next 10 years and your retirement accounts are invested the exact same way they were when you started in your 30’s, you are taking an incredible amount of risk. As your goals change, so should your investments. We help our clients understand their goals and evaluate if their retirement investments are set to meet those goals.
