PREZ SAYS

The Season is Here As I write this, we are looking forward to the first Enduro of the season with the Little Brown Jug Enduro over the Labor Day weekend. While this event is one of the more popular, it also starts our 2020-2021 season. Following LBJ, three weeks later, is our first Hare Scramble. As my previous article mentioned, we now have a Safe to Race document designed to allow us to race safely by being responsible motorcyclists. All we ask is that everyone does their part as we all get through this together. There is a light at the end of the tunnel so let’s all be patient and work through this. Also, everyone needs to have all their memberships

secured, minor release cards in hand and get pre entered; this will save a huge amount of time and cut down on standing in line six feet apart. CFTR has been working overtime to lead off the Hare Scramble series and the participation will be huge, so if you don’t pre enter it’s on you. There has been an unreal amount of coordination going on behind the scenes to recover from all the things we lost from the last event in March. Our main focus is to start safely without incident, our other main priority is to give our youth a memory of their accomplishment of the previous race season. This being said, FTR will have a presentation for all our youth classes Saturday evening at the first Hare Scramble. Details are coming and will be announced on our website and the FTR Facebook page.

ber 1 Plate for each class champion, FTR is a highly recognized series that has the other series looking our way on how it’s done. I have said this before but needs to be repeated, so many of you have told me that when you have visited other series races out of state, they don’t hold a candle to us. Organized, on time, classes for everyone and having our own safety team are just a few things that are constantly mentioned. So, with all this being said, we have something to be proud of, brag about and a series to raise our family in. Many thanks to all the generous friends I have that give so much of their time to ensure that FTR stays solid and will be here for our children and grandchildren. To all the volunteers that make this happen, Thank You! Thanks for listening,

Moving forward with our season also brings support Randy Faul from our series sponsors Moose Racing/Parts UnFTR President limited, Engine Ice, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC Race Gas and our new sponsor FMF. Along with being AMA chartered, which recognizes and awards the AMA NumSEPTEMBER 2020

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER Bad guys have it in for the good guys, obsessed with doing them in. But God isn’t losing any sleep; to him they’re a joke with no punch line. He brings it all together in verses 1314, Starting Line to Checkered Flag “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7 We all are watching what is going on all around the country. Many of us just shake our heads and wonder, “God you tell us your in control, then why the violence and the fear?” In Psalm, 37: 12-13, God gives his answers.

“Bullies brandish their swords, pull back on their bows with a flourish. They’re out to beat up on the harmless, or mug that nice man out walking his dog. A banana peel lands them flat on their faces—slapstick figures in a moral circus.” So where does that leave us? We are trying to do the right things, both in His eyes and with our family and friends. He knows us and is loving on us.

SEPTEMBER 2020

God keeps track of the decent folk; what they do won’t soon be forgotten. In hard times, they’ll hold their heads high; when the shelves are bare, they’ll be full. (Psalm 37:18-19)

Even if we hit a tough spot, God is taking care of us. “Stalwart walks in step with God; his path blazed by God, he’s happy. If he stumbles, he’s not down for long; God has a grip on his hand.” (Psalm 37: 23-24) So don’t give up or give in to what’s going on around us. God will never let us down. “Turn your back on evil, work for the good and don’t quit. God loves this kind of thing, He never turns away from his friends.” See you later this month at Bartow! Blessings on and off the road, Jim and Betty Edleston CMA

2020-2021 FTR HARE SCRAMBLE SEASON PREVIEW Round 1 9/26-27

CLUB: Central Florida Trail Riders (CFTR) LOCATION: Bartow, FL TRACK INFO: The beginning of the season is always an exciting time and CFTR does a great job in keeping that excitement going. The Peace River Hare Scramble is held on the Clear Springs Company property and provides some very interesting terrain. The property is an old phosphate mine so there is an abundance of elevation changes (for Florida anyway) with a harder packed surface. The trail condition changes as you head to the opposite side of the property however, once you cross over a part of the Peace River the trail turns into a sandier base. This keeps things interesting and ever changing as the weekend progresses.

Round 2 10/17-18

CLUB: Azalea City Motorcycle Club LOCATION: Palatka, FL TRACK INFO: The Azalea City Motorcycle Club holds their event at the Hog Waller Mud Bog just outside of Palatka. Don’t let the name fool you though, the club does a great job of avoiding the mud. Hog Waller is a true test of man and machine with flowy sand sections that tend to build up some chop. You will experience all sorts of elements from short palmetto sections, flowy switchbacks and even some small jumps. The facility is amazing with air-conditioned bathrooms, a bathhouse and bike wash stations. FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

Round 3 10/31-11/1 CLUB: Sarasota Area Dirt Riders Association (SADRA) LOCATION: Homeland, FL TRACK INFO: SADRA held their first event at the new Homeland property just last year. New properties are always exciting, and it is even more exciting to see what the club comes up with the second year. The Homeland property is right down the road from the CFTR Bartow property and holds very similar characteristics. A hard base allows for something different while other parts of the property hold the typical Florida Hare Scramble traits, like sandy berms and palmetto roots. The hard dirt can become slick which always provides a challenge for the riders. This race is on Halloween weekend so SADRA will be offering Trick-r-Treating for the younger attendees.

Round 4 11/14-15 CLUB: Daytona Dirt Riders (DDR) LOCATION: Ormond Beach, FL TRACK INFO: The Strickland Ranch has become a staple in the FTR Hare Scramble series. This property is massive which allows the club to use different sections each year, allowing the previous year’s course to rehab. DDR does a great job of mixing things up and you will never ride a particular part of the course for too long. You might have a palmetto section for a mile or two, then it switches to pine tree rows and then to some fields. This keeps things fun for both the riders and spectators. This is hunting land so expect to see a variety of wildlife as you pull in from deer, hogs and even turkeys.

Round 5 11/21-22 CLUB: Big Scrub Trail Riders LOCATION: Tavares, FL TRACK INFO: Ah, the Blueberry Farm. Located in the heart of Tavares the Far Reach Ranch provides a true Florida Hare Scramble. This property features a plethora of different terrain from tacky black dirt, sandy sweepers and palmetto heads that you can hop and skip across. This will be the third year that the Big Scrub Trail Riders will be holding a Hare Scramble at this property and so far each year they have found new ways to provide a challenging, yet fun, course for all riders. SEPTEMBER 2020

Photo by Jamey Perdue PAGE 13

Round 6 12/4-5 CLUB: Old School Dirt Riders LOCATION: Punta Gorda, FL TRACK INFO: The OSDR property is located just east of Punta Gorda and features fast and flowy trails. OSDR utilizes a creek bed that runs along the fence line of their property to create arguably the most flowy track of the year. The palmetto hammocks provide a sandier base that creates sweeping corners throughout the trail allowing riders to carry their speed. Another fun element of this course are the drainage ditches in the open fields that provide a fun challenge and keeps speeds down. This is one you will not want to miss.

Round 7 1/2-3 CLUB: Suncoast Trail Blazers LOCATION: Brooksville, FL TRACK INFO: Perhaps one of the more popular events of the year is the Mondon Hill Hare Scramble. This property is one of the more unique in Florida with quite a bit of elevation due to its mining history. The terrain provides a more technical trail with off-camber corners and small uphill sections. Don’t worry, the Suncoast Trail Blazers still find some typical Florida terrain whether its pine trees, sand whoops or fields. Other popular features of this course are the Daytona 500 turn, slag pile and motocross section near the start.

Round 8 1/16-17 CLUB: Palm Beach Track & Trail Riders LOCATION: Okeechobee, FL TRACK INFO: Around 13 miles west of the town of Okeechobee lies the Snake River property, or as the locals call it “The Ranch”. This is one the smallest properties in FTR but it packs a punch. Between the palmetto hammocks, pepper tree tunnels or the fast-flowy fields the course provides a challenge to all skill levels. Palm Beach Track and Trail creates a fun trail that utilizes the natural elevation changes that the Snake River provides. This race is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

Round 9 2/6-7

CLUB: Treasure Coast Trail Riders LOCATION: Indiantown, FL TRACK INFO: The TCTR Indiantown race is a great example of how a club improves their race each year. 2021 will be year four for TCTR and expect a fast, fun and flowing track. Although this property has some more fields than your average race, TCTR does a great job of breaking them up and keeping the speeds down. Last season TCTR implemented some amazing switchback sections that are guaranteed to have you wanting more. This property also allows for great spectating opportunities with multiple creek crossings and field sections close to camp. Photo by Morgan Hill

Round 10 2/20-21 CLUB: Big O Trail Riders LOCATION: Indiantown, FL TRACK INFO: Big O is one of the newer clubs in FTR but is filled with members with years of experience. Their race is held at Fox Brown Outfitters which is home to some amazing wildlife. Big O’s race shares similar characteristics with TCTR. You can expect fast and flowing woods with some fun obstacles, such as creek crossings. The ground is soft, so expect some sand berms and whoops to hop through. With a second year under their belt you can expect an amazing course from Big O.

Round 11 3/20-21 CLUB: Nature Coast Trail Blazers LOCATION: Dade City, FL TRACK INFO: Another staple of the series is the Nature Coast Dade City race. This property has a ton of variety, the most prominent are its flowing field sections. Other than fields you can expect a pine tree section that allows for multiple line choices, tacky black dirt, some jumps and dark gray sand that lets you lay on the throttle. The spectating at this race is great, with the majority of the track being right around the scoring chicane.

SEPTEMBER 2020

Photo by Glenn Gardner PAGE 15

Round 12 4/2-3 CLUB: Apollo Motorcycle Club LOCATION: TBA (Club is based in the Space Coast) TRACK INFO: Apollo M/C is one of the oldest clubs in FTR so they have a ton of experinece in regards to putting on a fun event. The Apollo trail is usally a little more “woodsy” than your average Florida Hare Scramble. New land is always exciting so we will be looking forward to wherever Apollo chooses for their event for this season.

Round 13 4/16-17 CLUB: River City Dirt Riders (RCDR) LOCATION: TBA (Club is based in Northeast Florida) TRACK INFO: River City is another club that has been around for quite some time. RCDR always puts on a fun and challenging event and we look forward to their event this season. RCDR has previously held events at the historic Gatorback Cycle Park so that may be an option for the club this season. If not, I am sure their new land will be perfect for us racers.

“There hasn’t been a day where i haven’t thought about racing”

ON TRACK: BRANDON FRAZIER Brandon Frazier lives to be at the races. Before his racing career started Brandon would spend his days riding around his family’s property every chance he got. His first race was the day after his fifth birthday, he had to be five to race the Quad Peewee class, at the Big Cypress Quad Scramble in 2006. The Avon Park native would go on to win that race. The next 14 years would be good for Brandon as he would go on to win multiple FTR Championships in Quad Scrambles, Hare Scrambles and even Motocross. It is safe to say Brandon eats, sleeps and breathes rac-

ing. “I’ve been nonstop since I was five-years-old, there hasn’t been a day where I haven’t thought about racing,” says Brandon. Some years the Frazier family would travel to FTR Hare Scrambles, FTR Motocross and even the GNCC series. In 2010, Brandon would win the GNCC Quad 6-11 Championship as well as the FTR Motocross and Hare Scramble Championships, sometimes racing multiple series on the same weekend. “We are definitely dedicated,” says Brandon.

Photo by Glenn Gardner FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

Brandon at his first race in 2006

In 2014, Brandon would clinch another GNCC title by winning all but two races in the 90 Open 12-15 class. In addition to winning his class Brandon was awarded Top Youth ATV rider for 2014. As far as training goes Brandon tries to get on the quad once or twice a week and heating healthy every day. Eating healthy is key because Brandon is a Type 1 diabetic, he was nine when he was diagnosed. “It was definitely a life-changer for me, I had to eat healthy and get four shots a day, but I manage.”

One of the major effects of Type 1 diabetes is fatigue, obviously this is not ideal for a racer at the level Brandon strives to be at. “Fatigue is my weak point,” says Brandon “I suffer from it at most races.” In order to combat fatigue Brandon has come up with a system to finish races strong. “We do a pitstop in the middle of the race and take a GU packet and then a drink that GU makes, it’s not always perfect but it helps a ton,” says Brandon “it has changed my racing career.”

Brandon is determined to keep getting better and takes advantage when the top GNCC riders are down here each winter. At any given FTR race from January to March you can expect anywhere from 10 to 20 GNCC riders signed up in the Quad AA class. “Honestly when the pro guys come down that is when I have the most fun,” says Brandon “those guys are so consistent and hardly make

mistakes, that is why they are the best.” When Brandon is not racing, he is working at the family business, Victory Golf Cart, five days a week. When not at work Brandon is spending time with his longtime girlfriend, Kilah Kirby, who also races FTR. “It’s awesome having a girlfriend that rides, we get to ride together, and she understands how the

racing life works.” Brandon would like to thank his parents and his girlfriend for their continued support through everything. Also Victory Golf Cart, BNR Motorsports, GBC Tires, O’Neal Racing ODI Grips, Scott Goggles, Leatt, FMF Exhaust, IMS , Houser Racing and all his family and friends.

CATCHING UP: KORBIN DINKEL

Korbin Dinkel is one of the nicest kids in the pits. Korbin and his family have been at it for a long time, this will be Korbin’s eleventh year racing FTR. I decided to check in with the Sarasota native to see what he has been up to over the extended offseason. Hey Korbin, how has your offseason been? This summer has been a weird one, I didn’t really ride very much because everything was closed. We went to about every GNCC race that they had just to get some sort of riding in. Those GNCCs were a lot of fun and a lot of riding time to say the least. Other-

wise we stopped in a few other states to visit some family and hang out. It was hard to do things because everything was shut down. What class are you racing this year? I am racing Junior A. It will be a really fun battle with everybody in Junior A. What are your goals for the season? My goals are to get a championship in Junior A, to stay on two wheels and not get injured. Also just to make it a good season.

FLORIDA TRAIL RIDERS

Who do you ride with and where do you normally ride? I normally ride with Blake Yahraus, Jimmy Moore and Logan Crawford. Those are the three people I ride with the most and we usually go to 74 MX or Croom. Who do you want to thank? I would like to thank my Father and Dinkel Enterprises, TF Racing Suspension, Seat Concepts Jesse Ansley, Tucker Powersports, Answer Racing, HBD Motografx for keeping my bike looking good, Sinclair Logistics and everyone else that helps me out and cheers me on.

747 OFFROAD PRO TIP with Hunter Neuwirth

LOG CROSSINGS:

Sometimes it can be intimidating if you are riding down a trail, turn a corner and BAM! There is a big log laying in your path. Here I’m going to break down the 5 key steps that well help you get over it!

Step 1 Vision - Always be scanning ahead as far as possible. The sooner you spot the obstacle, the more time you have to set up in the proper body position.

Step 2

Set Up - When Setting up for bigger logs it is important to approach the obstacle in a standing neutral position. Make sure you have the balls of your feet on your pegs at all times (this allows you to stay connected and have the most feel with your bike)

Front Wheel Placement - When you are about 3 feet from your obstacle slightly drag your front brake and pull your clutch in. You will feel the front-end settle, which is your signal to compress with your body. As you push down, drop your heels to put a bit of weight over the back wheel and give a quick blip of the throttle and release the front brake and clutch to pop up the front wheel. You want to try to hit about 3/4 of the way up the log. Hitting your front tire there is critical as this is what allows your rear tire to get over the log with ease.

Step 3

Step 4

Second Blip - As your front tire hits the log give another blip of the throttle. This second blip is what carries your momentum over the log. Make sure to stay on the balls of your feet with your knees tight against the bike.

Step 5 Exit - At this point it becomes a natural transition over the log and you can keep looking ahead at what is coming up next. SEPTEMBER 2020
