SNOW MACHINE SAFETY COURSE Jan. 8 |0900 Age: 18 & older Fee: $10 per person | Participants: Max: 20 This course was created to promote snow machine safety and responsibility while out on the trail. All classes begin at 9 am. An informative class followed by a hands-on practical on the operation of the machine. Participants will be issued a Snow machine Safety Card at the conclusion of the course. This course is required to rent snow machines from the Outdoor Recreation Center. COMPEAUS TRAIL SNOWMACHINE Jan. 22 | 0800 - 1700 Fee: $75 per person, $10 for additional passenger Participants: Max: 6; Min: 3 Join Outdoor Recreation on a snowmachine adventure to Compeaus Trail in the Chena River State Recreation Area. This trail goes low into the valley, and high in the mountains for some great terrain and some even better views! We will provide transportation, snowmachine and helmet. You bring your lunch, snacks, drinks and cold weather clothing. If the temperature drops below -10 degrees we will try to postpone to a warmer date. MACLAREN RIVER LODGE Jan. 14-16 (Must be preregistered) | 0800 - 1700 Fee: $329 per person | Participants: Max: 6; Min: 4 Outdoor Recreation will be making two holiday runs this year to Maclaren. The first will be for Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, the second on President’s Day weekend. This is the perfect getaway and a truly Alaskan experience. This program is weather dependent subject to blizzards, white-out conditions and extreme temperatures. Outdoor Recreation will provide transportation, lodging, meals, snow machines and helmets. You Bring Warm boots, cold weather clothing, hand/foot warmers and a good pair of gloves. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! Outdoor Recreation is seeking volunteer instructors/guides for our outdoor programs. This includes our boating, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, X/C ski, fishing, tours, ATV and snow machine trips. Women in the Wilderness WIW: CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRIP Jan 8. |0800 Age: Open to women of all ages Fee: $30 per person | Participants: Max:7; Min: 3 Meet at the ORC for a brief lesson on cross country skiing before we head out to the White Mountains for some hands on experience! Cost of registration includes short lesson and instruction on the trail, ski boots, cross country skis, poles, and transportation. Be sure to bring warm clothing, snacks, and drinks for the trail. If the temperature reaches below -10, we will attempt to postpone to a warmer dates.

WIW: ICE FISHING Jan. 29 | 0800 Age: Open to women of all ages Fee: $65 per person Participants: Max: 9; Min: 3 Join the Outdoor Recreation Team for some Women’s Only Ice Fishing in Alaska’s interior lakes. If you are new to ice fishing, then here is your chance to see how it’s done. ORC will provide transportation, rod and reel, bait, ice fishing hut with woodstove, and the know-how to get you started. If the temp drops below -20 degrees, we will attempt to postpone to a warmer day. An Alaska state fishing license is required for this trip.

THE DEAD OF WINTER... Do you like vampires and zombies? Or do you prefer a good romance? Political drama? Sci-Fi? The “Dead of Winter” Adult Reading Program offers reading opportunities in all genre of reading. During this three-month long event, come in from the cold and warm yourself with a good book. Once a month (January 18, February 15 and March 17) the Library will host an event that includes food and festivities along with book discussions. Prizes will be awarded for most books, audio books or magazines read; most activities attended; and for the winner of the chili and bowling contests. Now that we have Our Heroes’ Tree, let’s decorate it with ornaments and stories. We will have all the supplies necessary (other than the picture) including Battalion crests. And, if you would like to take the time to write about your hero, too, computers are available for use. We are so lucky here in Alaska-- we have all the beauty of the rainbow (even at night!). Sometimes, though, the clouds and cold prevent us from seeing the beautiful night sky... During the next three weeks we will be working with all sorts of media to create an indoor Alaskan sky for the Library to be displayed throughout the last few weeks of February and then all of March to celebrate nature’s beauty and Alaska’s birthday. Beating the Winter Blues, 1130 – 1230 Alaska is one of the darkest places on Earth. This class aims to help people adjust to Alaskan winters, dealing with the darkness and cold, understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder, and closes with fun activities to do in Fairbanks.

Key Caller Essentials Post Library, 0930 – 1130 This training defines the responsibilities of the Family Readiness Group (FRG) Key Caller and provides information on performing this role. This training includes useful forms and resource information. Treasurer Essentials Post Library, 1800 – 2000 Up-to-date information on fundraising and finance regulations. The training includes helpful forms, templates, and regulations.

Personal Financial Readiness Education Center Annex, Bldg. 2107 Rm 103, 0830 – 1600 Topics include Principles of Personal Finance, Banking, Credit, Saving and Investing, Budgeting, Consumer Awareness, and more. Bring current end-of-month LES. This class is mandatory for First Term Soldiers who have not previously attended. All ranks and Family members are welcome.

Keeping Love Alive, Part I, 1000 – 1200 Understanding how you and your partner (or friend, coworker, family member interact, especially during arguments, is essential if you want to change your relationship for the better. This class is adopted from the presentation by Michele Wiener- Davis with the purpose of teaching people how to become solution focused. This class challenges the old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed try, try again.” When you don’t succeed, try something different! Break the cycle and learn how to do what works.

That’s the Ticket Last Frontier Community Activity Center, 1000 – 1100 Do your kids think they are entitled to everything? This class helps parents learn a fun, interactive, motivational game to empower and inspire their kids. Parents learn how to enable their children to set clear goals, complete specific tasks, build positive habits, and earn the things they want! Care Team Training Post Library, 0930 – 1130 Focuses on the Care Team’s responsibilities and provides guidance on how to handle issues volunteers could face, such as dealing with the reactions from families. This training is recommended for Casualty Assistance Officers, Casualty Notification Officers and Battalion Care Team Volunteers. Trauma in the Unit Post Library, 1800 – 2000 This training is intended to assist unit leadership, FRG Leaders Care Team Members and key volunteers in knowing how to help Soldiers, Families and the unit when different traumatic events occur within the unit.

Certified Leaders Training Post Library, 0900 – 1400 In this training, you will gain the knowledge you need to run an effective FRG. This training includes: FRG Essentials, Getting Started, Roles of the FRG during the Deployment Cycle of Support and more.

The focus of this class is on the different ways people express and receive love. The aim of the class is to help spouses understand the different methods of communicating love.

Federal Employment System, 1400 – 1600 Information about the benefits of federal employment; finding federal employment opportunities and how to apply using the Resumix system; also learn how to target your resume to federal vacancy announcements for optimal results.

EFMP Respite Care Program

Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) respite care is a program that provides a temporary rest period for Family members responsible for regular care of persons with disabilities. Stress Management, 1500 – 1630 Need 27.5 hours in a day? How about stress reduction instead? This group discusses stress and relaxation techniques in order to effectively deal with stress. This course is offered in a series of four classes with a certificate awarded upon completion of all sessions. There are relaxation techniques taught in each session. All Soldiers and spouses welcome.

Play Morning School Age Services, Bldg. 4391, 0930 – 1100 is a group for mothers and children that provides developmentally appropriate activities, including playtime, crafts, singing and more.

Seven Habits of Highly Successful Army Families, 1130-1230 So you have 2.5 kids, a home, a dog… and combat boots. HOOAH! Being a member of the Army Family poses a unique set of challenges. This course is based on Stephen R. Covey’s No.1 bestsellers, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families. Topics include: The Basics, Habit One: Being Proactive, Habit Two: Begin with the End in Mind, and Habit Three: Put First Things First; (Habits 4-7 continued in February).

Conquering the Terrible Twos:

The Family and MWR Sports and Fitness Program offers two sessions of fitness classes: • Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 9:15 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. • Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. Sessions are held at Melaven Gym at no cost. For more information on class schedules call 353-1999.
