Learn the basics of Alaska boating with the Boater Safety Course. The class begins in the classroom and then will move to the river for a practical hands-on portion. A boater safety card is issued at the completion of the course and is valid for four years. The course is conducted rain or shine, so bring a raincoat.
Join our team for a three and half mile loop in the Chena River State Recreation Area. A scenic hike with ample wildlife viewing. We provide transportation. You provide lunch, snacks, plenty of water and bug repellent. Departs Outdoor Recreation Center at 9 am and will return by 5 p.m. This ATV Safety Institute course is provided to promote safe and responsible use of ATV’s, thereby reducing accidents and injuries that may result from improper operation. This course is required for any of the ATV programs we host this summer. *This course is currently only offered for participants signed up for our ATV trips. Ask at the ORC if you have questions regarding general ATV safety courses. Rock climbing is a great mental and physical challenge that is fun. We are lucky enough to have our own indoor rock climbing wall right here on Fort Wainwright! Come once to try it out, or come weekly and add indoor climbing to your regular workout schedule. This is a great way to train for the real rock Alaska has to offer. Experience the Alaskan Backcountry in Denali National Park & Preserve. View the majestic beauty and splendor of the Alaska Range, glaciers, wildlife and on a clear day Mount McKinley aka Denali (“The High One”) the name given by the Athabascan Indians. If you are in good physical condition, adventurous and not afraid of Alaskan Wildlife-then this is the adventure for you. Escape the crowded city and start flyfishing for Arctic Grayling in the Chena River State Recreation Area. A catch and release fishery the upper Chena provides excellent opportunities to hook into good size fish. If you are new to flyfishing this is your chance to learn from one of our experienced staff members. We provide flyrod, flies and transportation. You provide lunch, snacks and beverages. Escape with us to the White Mountains. We provide the ATV, helmet, and transportation. You provide lunch, goggles, gloves, over the ankle boots, snacks & beverages, and a daypack with bungee cord to strap to the ATV. An ATV Safety Course is required prior to the departure date. We depart the ORC at 8:30 am and will return that evening. If you need equipment coordinate with the Outdoor Recreation Center Staff at 361-4089/2652.

Participants will receive their 4-H Baby sitter Certificate and American Red Cross CPR and First Aid certifications upon successful completion of the course.
