New Winter Hours beginning October 7, 2010: Tuesday through Saturday 12:30 to 6:00 p.m.. Please sign up in advance for all ORC programs, as it gives us the ability to better prepare for you! GEOCACHING 101| October 2 | 1:00 p.m.| Outdoor Recreation Center Price: At No Cost | Age: 7+ (Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) Geocaching 101 will teach you the basics on how to use a GPS, from setting up way points to navigating your way to find the hidden treasures. This class is open to those with little to no knowledge of using a GPS and geocaching. Participants can use their own GPS or use on provided by Outdoor Recreation. Geocaching is a great activity for the whole family. OPEN ROCK CLIMBING | October 9 | 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. | Melaven Gym Rock Wall Price: $5 | Age: Open to all ages! (Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) Come on out to the rock wall at Melaven for your last chance at climbing before winter hits! This is a great opportunity for people new to climbing to get some basic instruction, or those with prior experience to get some more time on the rocks! After today, the rock wall will be open to appointments only, so don’t miss this chance! GOLD PANNING CLINIC | October 16 | 1:00 p.m. | Outdoor Recreation Center Price: $15 | Age: 7+ (Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) Come to the ORC to learn the basics of panning for gold! Our instructor will give you the basic know how to head out on your own to pan! The instruction includes panning techniques, sluice box use, and maybe even give a tip or two on places to go on your own! This workshop is a great way to prep for next spring. Also, be on the lookout for gold panning trips with Outdoor Recreation to begin in the summer of 2011! GEOCACHING IN FAIRBANKS | October 23 | 1:00 p.m. | Outdoor Recreation Center Price: At No Cost | Age: 7+ (Under 18 must be accompanied by an adult) Now that you know the basics, it is time to go out into the local community and search for some hidden caches. This is a great way to see how geocaching really works. Geocaching is for everyone and makes a great family activity! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!! This includes our boating, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, X/C ski, fishing, tours, ATV and snow machine trips. Read stories about cookies, make cookie crafts and maybe eat a few cookies, too! October 8th-Do you have a story you would like to share? National Storytelling Day is October 5th so our own stories will be told during Imagination Hour on the 8th. Come in before October 5th to inquirethis activity is open to all ages. Focused on prevention and education to make you Army Strong! Play Morning: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 0930-1100 Last Frontier Community Activity Center. This group for parents and their children that provides developmentally appropriate activities. Stress Management: Every Tuesday, 1500-1630 A series of lessons on where stress comes from and relaxation techniques to effectively deal with it. Includes lessons on time management and how to deal with combat stress.

Anger Management: Every Wednesday, 1500-1630 A ninety minute class that helps guide ways to a healthy handling of both anger and stress. Marriage Breakthrough: Oct. 4, 0930-1130 The class focuses on effective communication, diffusing conflict, and learning to be a team player. Beating the Winter Blues: Oct 4, 1400-1500 and Oct 18, 1600-1700 This class aims to help people adjust to Alaska Winters, dealing with the darkness and cold, understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder and closes with fun activities to do in Fairbanks.


Single Parenting: Oct 7, 1100-1200 A class designed to help single parents learn the skills of effectively balancing their various responsibilities. Focus includes strategies for strengthening one’s bond with their children in addition to challenges unique to single parent Families.

Newcomer’s Orientation: Oct 13, 0800-1200 Learn what Fort Wainwright, Alaska has to offer you. Spouses strongly encouraged to attend. Childcare is provided through the Child Development Center at no cost.

Coping with PTSD: Oct 8, 1130-1300 and Oct 11, 1030-1200 A class about signs and symptoms of PTSD, severity, coping measures and stress management, current treatments and where you can go to find help.

Office Machinery Seminar: Oct 5 from 1800-1900 Seating is Limited! Learn how to use basic office machinery.

L.O.V.E. (Learning to Overcome Violence Everyday): Oct 11, 1330-1500 and Oct 15, 1100-1230 Designed to increase understanding of the dynamics of domestic abuse. Focuses on the negative effects of violence and how the cycle of violence can be interrupted. Blended Parenting: Oct 14, 1130-1300 A class that explores what a blended Family is. It focuses on the challenges of creating a blended Family, appropriate expectations, maintaining a strong bond, discipline and boundaries and how to overcome them. 5 Love Languages: Oct 25, 1600-1700 A class based upon the book of the same title written by Gary Chapman. Focus of class is on the different ways people express and receive love. The aim of the class is to help spouses understand the different methods of communicating love.

Federal Employment System Class: Oct 14 and 28, 1330-1530. Learn how to navigate CPOL and prepare your Resumix.

Financial Readiness:

1st Termer Briefing: Oct 6, 0830-1630 at the Post Library Classroom (Bldg. 3700). Mandatory training for 1st Term/Initial Soldiers. Please bring an LES. Online training is available at www.myarmyonesource.com. Levy Briefing: Oct 7, 0900-1100, Bldg. 3401 MPD Basement Classroom This class is designed for Soldiers who are PCSing to a new duty station. Presenters include MPD, Housing, Transportation, Finance, CIF and ACS.

Army Family Team Building:

AFTB Level I: Oct 4-5, 0900-1400 each day. Learn the basics of Army life and how the goals of the Army mission impact daily life. Instructor Trainer Certification: Oct 26-28, 0900-1500 daily. Learn the different Adult Learning styles to reach your audience, write a script/lesson plan, and effective teaching strategies.


Mobilization/Deployment:

Treasurer Training: Oct 5, 0930-1130 Up-to-date information on fundraising and finance regulations. Includes helpful forms, templates, and regulations. Key Caller Training: Oct 5, 1800-2000 This training defines the responsibilities of the Family Readiness Group (FRG) Key Caller and provides information on performing this role. Trauma in the Unit: Oct 12, 0930-1130 This training is intended to assist unit leadership, FRG Leaders Care Team Members and key volunteers in knowing how to help Soldiers, Families and the unit when different traumatic events occur within the unit. Care Team Training: Oct 12, 1800-2000 Focuses on the Care Team’s responsibilities and provides guidance on how to handle issues volunteers could face, such as dealing with the reactions from Families. This training is recommended for Casualty Assistance Officers, Casualty Notification Officers and Battalion Care Team Volunteers. Certified Leaders Training: Oct 19, 900-1500 Focus is on challenges and situations that may be encountered during the deployment cycle. Topics include: Conflict Management, Crisis Intervention, and Getting and Keeping Volunteers.

Topics discussed will cover general nutrition guidelines, when to introduce different types of foods, allergies and reactions in your child to watch for, several methods of preparing and storing your own baby food with hands on practice, and the do’s and don’ts of infant feeding. Participants will receive a food mill and a collection of baby food recipes. Classes are held at the Child Development Center I Bldg. 4024.
