SEIMONBARAI
Located in the NakasuKawabata Shopping Street not far from Canal City, Seimonbarai takes its name from the term used in old Hakata for a customer appreciation sale. Fresh fish, some caught locally and some from other parts of Japan, can be enjoyed raw, grilled or broiled. The shop also serves up local delights including Itoshima roast beef, char-grilled free-range chicken and Hakata mentaiko. Other items include handmade croquettes and kushiyaki (skewers). noodle JUGEMU
Jugemu is a soy sauce ramen shop run by Kanto native Hikaru Chiba. The name comes from a famous rakugo (comic storytelling) play, and rakugo plays in the background. To align his soup more closely to Fukuoka’s trademark tonkotsu style, Chiba uses pig knucklebones in addition to chicken bones and vegetables. This is simmered for eight hours, and at the end of the process, he adds dried baby sardines to create a rich original soup. Chiba spent nine and a half years working at the popular tonkotsu ramen shop Ikkousha. “I wanted the first sip of soup to pack a punch that Fukuokans can relate to,” he explains. His noodles, which he sources from the same supplier as Ikkousha, are straight and slightly thick with high moisture content. This gives them their bouncy, smooth texture. He cuts his homemade char siu, which is made with pork belly, right before serving it to ensure its juiciness. Enjoy a Kanto favorite that’s been adjusted to local tastes.

칸토 출신 오너 치바 씨가 운영하는 쇼유 라멘이 메인인 쥬게무. 돈코 츠 라 멘이 뿌리 내린 후쿠오카의 풍토에 맞추어 돼지 넓적다리뼈, 닭 뼈, 채소를 약한 불에 8시간 정도 끓여 감칠맛을 응축시킨 진한 맛의 육수를 사용하는데 여기에 건어물로 해산물의 풍미를 추가해 깊은 맛을 더했다. 인기 돈코츠 라멘 전문점 잇코샤에서 약 9년 반을 일한 치바 씨. 잇코샤 계열 제면소를 통해 비교적 굵직한 곧게 뻗은 면을 들여오는데 수 분 함 량 이 높 아 쫀 득 하 면 서 부 드럽 게 넘어가는 식감이 특징이다. 직접 만드는 차슈도 육즙이 마르지 않게 손님에게 나가기 직전에 자르는 등 곳곳에서 세심한 손길을 느낄 수 있다. 칸토풍 라멘을 후쿠오카에 맞춰 재구성한 쥬게무 라멘의 맛을 직접 확인해 보시길.

This festival is dedicated to the Yanagawa-born tanka poet and children’s songwriter, Hakushu Kitahara (1885-1942). Around 70 boats decorated with lanterns float down the canals of Yanagawa at night, with performances played out on riverside stages. For the event’s finale, fireworks light up the night sky. 白秋祭水上遊行

For two weeks in November the streets of Fukuoka are made more exciting by the odd glimpse of the rikishi (wrestlers), their hulking mass, elegantly fanned top-knot, full kimono and aroma of talcum powder. Long-time mentaiko maker Fukutaro has opened a kaku-uchi (standing bar) in Tenjin. Inside the spacious bar, you can stand at the bar counter or high tables, but there is also izakaya-style seating if you’d rather sit. The menu includes local favorites like game-ni simmered veggies and rolled omelet with mentaiko, and a wide selection of alcohol is available at reasonable prices. A French chef works in the kitchen, so you can enjoy French foods like pate de campagne, but he also adds his unique touch to local dishes like goma saba (mackerel sashimi with sesame).

HOKU-HOKU YAKI IMO It’s roasted sweet potato season!
You know we are in the middle of autumn when you hear calls of ishi yaki-imo (sweet potatoes baked on hot stones) ringing through the streets. That’s the sound of vendors driving trucks through residential areas to sell baked sweet potatoes. Harvested in September, and then after a period of storage to reduce excess water, now is when they are the most delicious. Not all imo are the same! Some are bright purple, while others have white skin. The hot, fluffy sweet potatoes known as naruto and benisatsuma are especially delicious.
In contrast, the silky sweet beniharuka variety from Kumamoto has a softer quality. Each variety has its own characteristics, so try a variety, and soon you’ll become a connoisseur. Recently, honey potatoes made from the sticky annoimo variety have
become particularly popular, with customers falling for their moist, sweet texture and sugary flavor. Here are three recommended shops. But if it’s 4 am and you’re feeling the need, keep in mind that all Don Quixote (open 24 hrs) sell piping hot yaki-imo too.

Mutsukado, a popular bakery in Yakuin specializing in loaves of plain bread, has opened a cafe in Amu Plaza. You can enjoy the soft, fluffy bread that keeps customers coming back for more along with a great view of the city. The bread is delivered from a central kitchen several times a day, and one bite reveals just how good it is. The mixed fruit sandwich, which includes whipped cream, is sweet and soft, almost like a cake. Also, try the thick-cut anko (red bean paste) butter toast for a filling semi-sweet snack. You can also buy loaves of bread to take home.

This graph shows the number of reported cases of HIV and AIDS in Japan as well as the number of HIV consultations at health centers across the country. There were 940 cases of HIV infection and 377 cases of AIDS reported in 2018 - a combined total of 1,317 cases. For the past 15 years, the number of cases of HIV and AIDS has been over 1,000 each year. In Fukuoka City, there were 23 cases of HIV infection in 2018 and 17 cases of AIDS - a combined total of 40. However, these figures include only those who were tested, meaning there are more people going about their daily lives in Fukuoka and Kyushu, unaware that they have been infected with HIV.

ust 60 minutes by car from Fukuoka lies Yanagawa, a former castle town famous for its 930 km of moats and waterways, and often referred to as the Venice of Japan. By far the most popular attraction today are the hour-long cruises in gondolas piloted by boatmen who talk about the town’s history and break out into folk songs. The scenery is stunning! We’ve had our eyes on these calm waters for years and finally last month we took our SUP (standup paddleboards) there for a full-day paddle.

Let’s clarify two things. Not all beachside cafes in Itoshima are for only the young, and secondly, not all pancakes are equal! This recently opened beachside cafe restaurant overlooking the famous Meotoiwa (husband and wife rocks) on Futamigaura Beach offers a quiet, grown-up space for
premium quality meals and beverages. Appointed with mostly wood and stone, the interior and exterior blend in nicely with the natural surroundings and shade is rolled out over the terrace to make it comfortable year-round. While fluffy pancakes are trending elsewhere, here they are firm and substantial masterpieces! Go the whole way with the Ricotta Cheese Mix Berry Pancake (¥1,500). Umegae Bakery
In late July, Hajime Dohi and his wife Mariko opened a new bakery near Kafuri, and it’s already booming! After perfecting his skills at many bakeries around Japan and overseas in Düsseldorf, Germany, he now bakes 25 to 30 varieties daily. The most popular include Anpan, Creme Pan, and Raison Creme Cheese. All the fillings are made on-site and some with vegetables from a family-run farm. With the shop name “Umegae”, understandably some first-time customers expect to find umegae-mochi (popular sweet
from Dazaifu) on sale, but alas, the name is actually from Hajime’s family business, a noodle maker, so try his yummy Yakisoba Roll instead! The shop opens at 8 am and the earlier you get there, the better the selection!
