This fall, hot spring resort Oncri took over the 60-year-old Japanese restaurant Watahan in Shirogane, adding high ceilings to the dining room to make it more open. The restaurant offers courses that combine traditional French cuisine with modern trends. You can enjoy watching the chefs cook in the open kitchen while you wait. Chef Daisuke Yoshitake, a native of Fukuoka, carefully selects local ingredients, including high-quality Saga Beef and long tooth grouper, a popular winter fish in northern Kyushu, to create elegant courses served on Arita ware from Saga.

Owner Sadanori Iwamura got his start in an Italian restaurant, but after getting hooked on Sanuki udon, he spent six years at a popular udon shop in Tokyo honing his chops before opening Chabukama near Ohori Park. Drawing from his diverse background, Iwamura serves up unique seasonal udon like vichyssoise udon (summer) and oyster and miso cream udon (winter) along with the standard lineup. His kake (hot) udon features a clear, refined broth made with baby sardines from the Seto Inland Sea, but it still maintains an umami that pairs perfectly with his bouncy homemade noodles. Foodies will love the healthy and delicious Ariake Sea nori seaweed (made in Yanagawa) and natto kamatama (freshly boiled udon with raw egg). In winter, you can also enjoy oden made in a subtle broth. The menu also features a selection of sake that Iwamura procures directly from the brewers he visits.

Woolly mammoths roamed earth 32,700 years ago. In this exhibit, see displays of fully-preserved mammoth tusks, the recently excavated Yukagir mammoth in Russia, small horses and other creatures from the same period, and more. 12/2 (Mon.) OYAMAZUMI SHRINE OSHIROI FESTIVAL
This 300-year-old festival is held annually to give thanks for an abundant harvest and pray for next year’s crop. To honor the shrine god who is believed to be a woman, worshippers grind fresh grains of rice into powder and paint their faces white. This is the only festival of its kind in Japan! 白粉祭典

有三百年歷史的朝倉市大山祇神社的白粉祭典。據說坐鎮大山祇神 社是為女神，當地居民為了感謝女神的保佑讓大家無病無災並年年 五穀豐收，每年舉行祭典時會用新米磨成粉與水攪拌在一起抹在臉 上，猶如女神化妝時的樣子。這獨特的當地風俗，千萬別錯過哦。
오시로이 축제
오야마즈미 신사의 300년 전통을 자랑하는 오시로이 축제. 햅쌀을 빻아 만든 가루를 물에 풀어 얼굴에 새하얗게 칠하는데 이것이 얼마나 잘 묻었는지를 보고 내년의 작황을 점치며 풍작을 기원한다. 일본 내에서도 좀처럼 찾아보기 힘든 풍습으로 유명하다.

In 2017, Tsubasa Kabashima, a DJ and former employee of the famous club Kieth Flack, opened Fools Gold facing Yakuin Mutsukado to provide a spot where people can enjoy music casually. The shop name is from a Stone Roses song, and because the band’s logo is a lemon, the menu features drinks made with homemade lemon syrup. A mecca for local culture, the shop is decorated with art by local artists like KYNE and Toyameg, not to mention a shirt worn by former Smiths frontman Morrissey when he played in Fukuoka. Stop by and enjoy a drink while LPs spin in the background.

N
orthwestern Kyushu is well-known as the birthplace of ceramics in Japan, and porcelains such as Hasami ware, Arita ware, and Karatsu ware have come to be known worldwide. The techniques for making ceramics were introduced from Korea, but the ceramics produced in each region were unique. Hasami is known for its celadons (greenware) featuring various kinds of engravings and decorations, while Arita ware is typified by bright patterns made with dyes and coloring. Starting around the end of the 17th century, the kilns of Hasami began focusing on the mass production of low-cost everyday dishes for the Japanese market. In the Edo era, the kurawanka bowl spread throughout Japan, gaining popularity for its durability and reasonable price and marking a shift in porcelain ware as a common-use item instead of just art (1680s ~ 1860s). Hasami ware is produced in a town-wide effort. The kataya (mold maker) make the molds for the clay, the kijiya (claymaker) make the clay to be fired, and the kamamoto (potters) decorate and fire the porcelain. Hasami is also home to one of the world’s largest climbing kilns, which was used by everyone in the community for the mass production of Hasami ware. Hasami ware is now known for its simple designs and functionality, and has become popular even among young people and creatives.

This museum features displays of ceramics from 35 potters, traders, and traditional artisans based in Hasami as well as a gift shop of local specialty goods. The second floor exhibit elaborates upon the history of Hasami ware.

The neighborhood of Nakaoyama is home to around 20 kilns and ceramic stores as well as galleries and gift shops. It is also where the ruins of one of the world’s largest climbing kilns is located, which was the source of mass produced ceramics in the Edo era.

Witness the stone walls of the Fukuoka Castle Ruins come to life this winter, transformed into art spaces using digital technology by art collective teamLab. Animals created from colorful flowers will be reflected on the 60 meter long walls. Touch them and see what happens! Approach the egg-shaped objects set up amongst the trees near the castle ruins - they’ll change color and emit sound. The exhibition will display 7 artworks, including 4 new, never-before-seen works.
