2012 Annual Report
FULL CIRCLE FUND IS AN ACTIVE PHILANTHROPIC NETWORK OF MEMBERS WHO PARTNER WITH SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS TO ADVANCE SOLUTIONS TO THE MOST PRESSING PROBLEMS IN OUR COMMUNITIES. 2012 was an exciting year! We started with a hungry mind to uncover innovative organizations with promising solutions. We identified nine committed nonprofits in the fields of Education, Global Economic Opportunity and Environment that deal with pressing issues like education reform, healthcare access and water conservation. Over the year, our Members leveraged their time, talents and resources to collaborate with these nonprofits and accelerate their potential for impact. We designed new initiatives to leverage our Members’ networks and resources to create greater impact. As a result, 90% of our Members reported that their involvement strongly contributed to their personal and professional development. And together, we learned about the issues, solutions and how we can most effectively engage to create action. We proudly present our passions, achievements and collaborations in our second Annual Report. You’ll meet innovative nonprofits moving the needle to better our communities, and our network of incredible Members that make this impact possible. Thank you for your support. We hope you continue with us in this effort. Together, we can truly do more.
“ Full Circle Fund works on systemic solutions, and I believe deeply in their model. With a successful track record of establishing and incubating organizations, they are like the Y Combinator of the philanthropic world. It’s an honor to be a supporter of this organization. ” Sheryl Sandberg COO, Facebook
“ Full Circle Fund’s model of focusing on disruptive innovations that can be systemically durable is really the right one. I hope that you’ll share and evangelize what works in the Bay Area so that other communities can learn from what you’re doing. ” Chelsea Clinton Special Correspondent, NBC News Board Member, William J. 1ST ANNUAL DEMO DAY In July, Full Circle Fund unveiled its 2012 Grant Portfolio to the greater community and provided a platform to raise awareness, build momentum and secure $30,000 in additional funding. Roots of Success and Education for Change were recipients of $10,000 grants from PG&E, and individuals donated an additional $10,000 to organizations in the portfolio.
INVESTING IN OUR PORTFOLIO We introduced new initiatives and a unified grant cycle to optimize engagement, capital distribution and collaboration across our portfolio. New programs provided Members with opportunities beyond grantmaking and created tangible outcomes for our Grant Partners.
“ It is quite rare to see so many committed people and fledgling, new organizations come together and translate their passion into tangible impact in the communities where we live and work. These are organizations at a critical tipping point. The benefit for us as grantmakers is that Full Circle Fund is on the ground helping to identify potential organizations that may not yet be on our radar. ” Ezra Garrett Executive Director, VP of Community Relations & Chief Sustainability Officer, PG&E Foundationn
MOBILE APP HACKATHON In October, Full Circle Fund partnered with AT&T to cohost a Mobile App Hackathon. Three organizations from our portfolio past and present – Niroga Institute, One Economy, and Roots of Success – were selected from a pool of applicants. Each received a team of developers to conceptualize and design a mobile app to help them solve a particular market problem – an investment valued at $25,000. “ At AT&T, we have a strong commitment to creating positive impact on the communities we serve. Our partnership with Full Circle Fund has been an invaluable way to leverage our human capital for the benefit of nonprofits that align with our philanthropic initiatives. We derive great value from tapping into the knowledge and leadership of the Bay Area’s most innovative philanthropic network. ” arc D. Blakeman M Regional Vice President, External Affairs, AT&T
FLEXIBLE ENGAGEMENT OPPORTUNITIES Full Circle Fund launched a new flexible engagement model that provides Members the opportunity to meaningfully engage in a capacity that works best for them. We designed these shorter engagements – Idea Jams, brainstorm sessions, focus groups, office hours – to offer more flexibility to members, be more iterative and responsive to our Partners’ needs, and engage valuable talent in our Alumni network.
EDUCATION & PEER LEARNING Full Circle Fund convened experts, thought leaders and social entrepreneurs to learn about issues, opportunities, and organizations making a difference. We learned about philanthropy and how to have a greater impact with our resources.

IMPACT SPOTLIGHTS Our Members collaborated with our Grant Partners to help them build capacity, scale their vision, and change more lives. We highlight three special projects that illustrate the power of our engaged philanthropy model.
ROS needed help to address a new market opportunity: returning military veterans. Members played a critical role in strategy, marketing, outreach and partnership development to reach and serve the 755,200 veterans in need of job training.
IMPACT: • Members developed a value proposition that enabled ROS to secure over $24,000 in funding and key partnerships with corporations such as PG&E. • Members provided critical refinement of marketing materials and elevator pitches, saving ROS 216 hours and $20,275 in staff time and resources. • ROS was one of three recipients to be selected for the AT&T-Full Circle Fund Hackathon and won the app development prize valued at $5,000.
“ Full Circle Fund had a transformative impact on Roots of Success. Access to the passionate, talented, and experienced Members has been invaluable. Their commitment to our growth and continued success helped us develop a more effective outreach strategy and their grant provided us with the seed funding to execute it. ” aquel Pinderhughes, Ph.D. R Founder and Executive Director, Roots of Success, Chair and Professor, Department of Urban Studies and Planning, San Francisco State University
“ Being a project lead was very rewarding, personally and professionally, especially to see the impact a small group of people can have in advancing the mission of a burgeoning organization. It was also inspiring -- and impressive -- to see the domino effect of Full Circle Fund’s partnership with the additional opportunities our Grant Partner encountered and benefited from throughout the engagement. ” Member Anne Boyd Rabkin Principal, Boyd Rabkin Consulting
MULTINATIONAL EXCHANGE FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE (MESA) Expanding Reach Through Strategic Marketing & Impact Assessment In order to build and grow local, resilient food systems around the world, MESA provides hands-on training and cultural exchange programs for small scale farmers and sustainable food activists. MESA recently launched its Sustainable Projects Recognizing Innovative Growers (SPRIG) program to help host farmers develop mentoring skills to benefit the next generation of farmers, and needed strategic marketing, outreach and development counsel to galvanize critical support from stakeholders and clients.
IMPACT: • Members developed key marketing collateral, including a comprehensive infographic to better articulate MESA’s mission and created a set of best practices to advance MESA’s development efforts. • Members also provided key strategic guidance for organizational development and cultivated new donors for MESA’s fundraising event, which led to a 200% increase in attendees and a 700% growth in revenue. • Members saved MESA approximately 450 hours of outreach, marketing, development and fundraising time and $16,000 in strategic planning and donor cultivation.
INNOSIGHT INSTITUTE Constructing A Customized Universe For Blended Learning Innosight Institute sought to apply its mission of solving the world’s most pressing problems through disruptive innovation to its collection of blendinglearning implementations. However, they lacked a crucial organizational component to aggregate and disseminate their findings on a major scale. Members helped conceptualize and further develop the Blended Learning Universe, a critical initiative to identify and share data for programs launched around the country.
IMPACT: • Members played a key role in the design of the Blending Learning Universe user interface and functionality, and they conducted stakeholder interviews to understand information needs. Members also designed marketing approaches to support database rollout and expansion. • Access to the Full Circle Fund network saved Innosight over 250 hours in strategic work and $15,000 in staff and web development time. • Innosight received additional support & funding from Pearson Foundation due to its engagement with Full Circle Fund. • Members provided an executive summary to Innosight related to necessary Blended Learning Universe components, outreach tactics, and overall recommendations.
• Our engagement resulted in six new major funders and two new Board Members from the Full Circle Fund network.
“ MESA’s collaboration with Full Circle Fund surpassed all our expectations. We have a reinvigorated Board of Directors, improved metrics for evaluation, more effective marketing materials, new strategic partnerships, and increased operating capacity. ” L eah Atwood Co-Executive Director, Multinational Exchange for Sustainable Agriculture (MESA)
“ Working with a committed team of Full Circle Fund Members to help MESA was an incredible experience. It was so rewarding to leverage my corporate experience for this amazing nonprofit with both local impact and global scale. I was happy to contribute to the group, and also learn from the diverse and extensive experiences of my colleagues at Full Circle Fund. ” Member rista Van Tassel K VP, Environmental Affairs, Wells Fargo
“ The Full Circle Fund team that supported us in creating our Blended Learning Universe showed both passion and dedication. Their critical eyes helped us refine our concept and push it forward so that we could maximize our impact in transforming the education system into a student-centric one. ” ichael B. Horn M Education Executive Director, Innosight Institute
“ I joined Full Circle to learn from organizations on the forefront of transforming education. As a Member and Project Lead, I leveraged my business skills in the service of a pioneering organization in the blended learning space, which was incredibly rewarding. ” akeyshia Kendall N Pearson Foundation

A PARTNERSHIP IN THREE PHASES PHASE ONE: A Relationship Is Born
A DECADE OF INNOVATION & GROWTH LEADERSHIP PUBLIC SCHOOLS In 2001, Full Circle Fund developed a partnership with Leadership Public Schools (LPS) to help transform the lives of urban youth in the Bay Area.
In 2001, Mark Kushner had a vision to create a nonprofit organization with the mission to serve a diverse student body throughout the Bay Area. His vision was a new network of charter high schools focused on providing access to college for low income students. Full Circle Fund saw incredible potential and made its first grant to help incubate one of the first charter high schools in California. • Leadership High School was incubated out of Full Circle Fund’s office in the beginning years. • Members worked closely with Mark Kushner to secure the charter’s renewal and develop an extensive marketing plan to help accelerate awareness and adoption of his vision. • By 2010, Leadership Public Schools, led by Dr. Louise Bay Waters, had four schools across the Bay Area, serving 1,300 students, and was achieving breakthrough results. “ I can truly say that LPS wouldn’t likely exist without Full Circle Fund,” Mark Kushner reflected, “Bottom line, Full Circle Fund helped us improve the leadership skills and academic achievement of young people. ”
PHASE TWO: Embracing Technology to Transform Academic Performance At LPS schools, the average 9th grader comes in with skills at the fourth or fifth grade level. A student needs to be at the tenth grade level in order to be ready to enter college without remediation. LPS sought to bridge this tremendous gap by leveraging technology to make teaching and learning more effective. • In 2011, Full Circle Fund and LPS reconvened to launch ExitTicket, an interactive, real-time mobile technology initiative that utilizes smartphones in the classroom and accelerates student and teacher performance. • Members worked with LPS Chief Innovation Officer Dr. Scot Refsland and played a critical role in the initial research, strategy sessions, implementation and ongoing counsel for ExitTicket. • As one of the most innovative, technologically sound and instructionally powerful data tools for teachers in the country, ExitTicket has helped students achieve academic confidence, improve performance and gain 2.5 grade levels in one year. “ At urban high schools, there’s a very inexpensive, extremely powerful resource, and that’s the students. Once the students believe in themselves, they can make incredible leaps,” said Dr. Louise Bay Waters, “We’ve found that this opportunity for them to see moment-to-moment microsuccesses has allowed them to really engage and believe in themselves. ”
PHASE THREE: Scaling Innovation Seeing promising success with ExitTicket, LPS turned again to Full Circle Fund in 2012 for a third grant engagement to leverage Members’ expertise in intellectual property and licensure issues to advance their research & development efforts. • Members secured pro bono legal counsel to create the legal infrastructure and for-profit corporation, UrbanEDU, to take ExitTicket to market. • Members provided product management and business development tools that enabled LPS to create the corporate structure necessary to apply for a $1.1 million federal Small Business Innovation and Research grant and meet with potential investors. • In March 2013, LPS announced the official launch of the ExitTicket interactive student response system to help scale this impact nationwide: www.exitticket.org.
“ Full Circle Fund is the biggest brain trust I’ve ever seen to help us figure out how to advance the R&D we are developing for schools and bring that to the market in scale. ”
“ I was lucky enough to help LPS plan how to scale their ExitTicket product, which has achieved extraordinary results in advancing student learning. It was an immersive and enjoyable experience for me. I visited their Hayward campus and saw ExitTicket in action in math, science, and humanities classes, and met many of the students who’ve benefited from the product. ” Mark Jacobstein

OUTCOMES LPS has found incredible results with their students. Student achievement has shot up as students recognize their own success and believe in themselves, and teachers receive the data they need to understand and address the needs of each student. The impact of their programs and commitment to innovation can be seen in recent awards, new partnerships, rising Academic Performance Index (API) scores and tremendous student gains in math and literacy.
“ These innovative schools have attracted the attention of education leaders nationwide for a good reason: they have changed the life trajectory of thousands of students. Teams of Full Circle Members have had the pleasure of supporting LPS through critical transitions, and I expect we will find more exciting opportunities with LPS in the future. ” Jeff Camp
