The Full Circle Fund Community

INTRODUCTION TO OUR 2014 ANNUAL REPORT Over the past few years, Full Circle Fund has experienced incredible growth - both in the number of Members and size of our Grant Portfolio. In 2014, our Membership community grew by 20% and the 2014 Grant Portfolio was the largest we have had to date, with 12 organizations receiving funding and resources from our community. In addition to forging new partnerships with leading Bay Area companies and foundations, we piloted a new issue area to apply our model to impact Health. We returned to our startup roots by launching Founders Pledge with the support of The Salesforce.com Foundation. And finally, we joined the Impact Hub San Francisco community and expanded our core Full Circle Fund team to further amplify our programs and Member experience. We capped this all off with our annual benefit, recognizing innovation in philanthropy and entrepreneurship with Reid Hoffman, Jacquelline Fuller and Google.org, Jeff Weiner, and the founders of Airbnb, raising a record amount of funds to support our program growth. While continuing to iterate upon our model in 2015, we will also look back to commemorate our 15th anniversary. We are so proud of our Members, Grant Partners, and Corporate and Foundation Partners -together, we have accelerated more than 100 Bay Area nonprofits that are providing innovative solutions for Education, Environment and Energy, Economic Opportunity, Health, Housing, and Technology. We look forward to celebrating this milestone with you all at our annual benefit, which will be held at City Hall on October 15, 2015. We hope you enjoy our 2014 Annual Report and stop by our office the next time you are in the Impact Hub! Sincerely,
Tim Smith, Executive Director
Josh Becker, Co-Founder & Board Chair

OUR MODEL Full Circle Fund is an active network of Bay Area professionals who leverage their time, talent and resources to advance high impact nonprofit organizations. Our Members identify and scale solutions to challenges by vetting organizations in each of our core issue areas, then partner with 10 -15 nonprofits annually. Each Grant Partnership includes unrestricted financial support and a team of Members partnering with their Grant Partner for a seven-month period. Grant partners receive leadership development, in-kind services and products, and several other benefits from our network.

NEW PROGRAMS THE HEALTH CIRCLE
FOUNDERS PLEDGE
Following a successful pilot and support from The Blue Shield of California Foundation, we have expanded our grantmaking program to include a fourth Circle focused on Health. The Health Circle identifies and advances solutions to public health and healthcare issues. The Center for Care Innovations (CCI) was selected as our first Health Grant Partner, which serves as a vital source of ideas, best practices and funding for California’s healthcare safety net. Throughout the year, we explored the complexities of this new issue area by hosting panel discussions on healthcare and the safety net, The Affordable Care Act and how changes in the health sector impact many aspects of our cities and communities. Insights from these discussions further informed the approach Members took while partnering with CCI on strategies for their branding, network-building and relationship mapping.
In August 2014, Full Circle Fund launched Founders Pledge as a way for Bay Area startups to “Do Good from the Start.” Through this new program, early stage companies make a commitment to positive social change by pledging 1% of company equity to nonprofits. Pledge-makers gain access to a growing community of social-minded companies and their founders, in addition to resources for building a socially conscious company culture. Benefits include curated volunteer opportunities, educational events and direct engagement with nonprofit leaders. Ultimately, as pledge-making companies succeed, the impact of their pledges increases. Strategic Partner Cooley LLP, which has provided pro bono services to Full Circle Fund since 2004, advised the design and implementation of the Founders Pledge program. Obindo Co-Founder, Joe Kleinschmidt (Member since 2010), was the first pledge-maker in a community that has quickly grown to over 20 companies.
This extension of our model was made possible by a core group of passionate Members, including Anne Boyd Rabkin, Kevin Ann Jordan, Rob Joyce and Kristen Pedersen. We look forward to growing this Circle alongside the rapidly shifting health landscape and announcing our first full portfolio in 2015.
Our community of supporters and pledge-makers attended the inaugural celebration in September 2014 at Runway Incubator to hear from Joe and fellow pledge-maker Optimizely, alongside Founders Pledge Sponsor Salesforce.com Foundation. As the culture of philanthropy continues to grow within organizations of all sizes, our excitement and confidence around the potential impact of this program only grows stronger. + “My favorite part of Full Circle Fund’s approach is that it’s an active one: it’s not about writing a check and then walking away. It’s about learning, sharing, meeting others, and getting involved. Founders Pledge takes this one step further – it means that not only are you actively giving, you’re interweaving that into the DNA of your company as well. It takes that active approach to a whole new level.” Joe Kleinschmidt CEO and Co-Founder, Obindo

BUILDING COMMUNITY RE-CODING PHILANTHROPY BENEFIT
NEW PARTNERSHIPS
Full Circle Fund hosted our annual benefit, themed “Re-Coding Philanthropy” in November 2014, at Bimbo’s 365 Club. Over 350 supporters joined, along with Event Chair Mike Anders and our lead sponsors, Greylock Partners and ICONIQ. We celebrated our growth throughout the year and honored the achievements of Jeff Weiner (LinkedIn), Airbnb, and Jacquelline Fuller (Google.org). Speakers included Reid Hoffman, Nate Blecharczyk, Full Circle Fund Board Chair Josh Becker, Executive Director Tim Smith, Robin Joy (Member since 2003), and Catarina Schwab (Member since 2013). Ashanti Branch and Lorenzo Cooper of The Ever Forward Club (2014 Grant Partner) warmed the hearts of the crowd, bringing to life the direct impact that Grant Partners have on the lives of people in our community. In the end, we surpassed our goal by raising over $450,000, enabling us to advance our mission and help more nonprofits in our four core issue areas.
Full Circle Fund partners with companies, foundations and individuals to build awareness around our core issue areas and increase the philanthropic impact within our community. In 2014 we welcomed six new companies and foundations to our partner community.

IMPACT SNAPSHOT
ENVIRONMENT & ENERGY CIRCLE
KITCHEN TABLE ADVISORS’ mission is to help sustainable farms become sustainable businesses. Research has shown that only 50% of small farms survive beyond five years and even fewer achieve long-term viability. Kitchen Table Advisors increases the business viability of small, sustainable farms in Northern California by equipping farmers with business and financial management coaching and support needed to get on the path to resiliency – with the end goal of strengthening the local foodshed.
THE CHALLENGE
THE APPROACH
Kitchen Table Advisors had amassed a large group of supporters from various backgrounds whose passion led them to join as a member on their Advisory Board, Leadership Council, or as a volunteer. While their knowledge and relationships were individually leveraged, Kitchen Table Advisors recognized the need for a group of leaders whose collective insights could support their long-term organizational development. Ultimately, Kitchen Table Advisors sought to better understand how they could restructure their supporters in a way that advanced growth and served their clients: small, sustainable farms.
Full Circle Fund Members designed and conducted stakeholder interviews with over two dozen supporters and staff. The insights gained through these interviews, along with a custom-designed relationship map, informed recommendations for restructuring the new advisory board around a common purpose. Over the course of the six-month project, our Members partnered with Kitchen Table Advisors to clarify the roles, responsibilities and commitments needed from this new advisory board to support the growth of the organization.
“The lasting relationships I built with Full Circle Fund Members and the practical tools I learned through Trium’s Leadership Circle workshop were totally unexpected and had as much of a positive impact on our organization as the project itself.” Anthony Chang, Founder and Executive Director
THE IMPACT In December 2014, Kitchen Table Advisors announced the re-launch of their advisory board as the “Kitchen Cabinet.” From creation to launch, Full Circle Fund Members provided in-depth guidance on the structure, purpose and marketing of the Kitchen Cabinet. Members of the Kitchen Cabinet now share leadership with staff through the commitment of their time, resources and social capital, which helps create a more resilient organization. In addition, Full Circle Fund and Kitchen Table Advisors developed a plan for rotating other supporters to roles where they could continue to contribute in meaningful ways. Kitchen Table Advisors’ grant partnership with Full Circle Fund provided several additional benefits beyond the Kitchen Cabinet creation. Anthony
Chang, Founder and Executive Director, took advantage of the highly valuable Trium Leadership Circle series, facilitated by our Strategic Partner The Trium Group. Several Full Circle Fund Members have also contributed additional time, resources and connections to help advance their mission, including volunteer photography, pro-bono legal advice and introductions to other foundations. In January 2015, Kitchen Table Advisors received Full Circle Fund’s inaugural $10,000 Impact Challenge award at the 2014 Wrap-Up hosted at Adobe, bringing their total Full Circle Fund grant to $25,000. Ultimately, the Full Circle Fund grant partnership provided Kitchen Table Advisors with a stronger platform and network to leverage as they grow and increase their impact in the Bay Area.

EDUCATION CIRCLE
THE EVER FORWARD CLUB (EFC) is a mentor-led, youth development and mentoring program for middle school and high school young men of color. EFC aims to address the underlying causes of dropouts, the growing achievement gap of inner city youth and youth violence in a preventive manner by providing students with a safe place to share their feelings and build character. They work with teens that have limited experience being a part of the school community; those that have become disengaged, disillusioned or disenfranchised; and those who have simply lost the energy to continue along in their studies. Leveraging a four-fold approach, The Ever Forward Club has seen 100% of club members graduate from high school and 93% of their graduates have continued on to become “first generation” college students.
THE CHALLENGE
THE APPROACH
In its 10 years, EFC has deeply impacted the lives of young men in Oakland, but their reach has remained limited due to inconsistent funding streams. These financial constraints impeded the expansion of EFC because they could not hire additional mentors to support their programs in more schools. EFC partnered with Full Circle Fund Members to create systems and a sustainable funding model to scale their model in the Oakland public school system.
Full Circle Fund supported EFC by creating a landscape analysis of 50 similar organizations, specifically assessing opportunities for partnership and collaboration with a smaller subset of the larger list, and created a formal structure for tracking future development opportunities. The team also led workshops for EFC leadership on the following topics: best practices for networking, structuring for growth, fundraising, and managing funds.
“The Ever Forward Club has benefited so much from its partnership with Full Circle Fund. This partnership has clarified what my work is really about, helped me create a vision for scaling our model and enabled me to take advantage of valuable growth opportunities along the way.” Ashanti Branch, Founder and Executive Director
THE IMPACT The research conducted by Full Circle Fund Members led EFC to explore crowdfunding as a new funding stream for expanding their programs. EFC learned about the components of a successful crowdfunding campaign and ultimately raised over $30,000 through an Indiegogo campaign, in addition to their Full Circle Fund grant. During this campaign, EFC built an active social media presence and acquired more than 350 new supporters. Awareness around EFC’s unique approach increased when the founder, Ashanti Branch, and Lorenzo Cooper (EFC Graduate and Mentor at
REACH Ashland Youth Center) spoke at Full Circle Fund’s 2014 Benefit. Over 350 people heard personal stories about the hardship experienced by EFC students and the positive role Ashanti and the program have in the lives of young men. Through our partnership with EFC, Ashanti now has a clear set of tools and resources to leverage for achieving his vision to develop more young men into connected community members who have truly come alive.
