What better welcome to visitors to Dubai that the city’s own name? The proposed D-shaped high tech ring structure can be seen as the capital letter ‘D’ from air and ground. It offers a welcoming hand to international culture as it opens up to its alphabet.

On the other hand the ‘shape’ also resembles a crescent moon (also from air and ground), as well as the overlooking hawk from Dubai´s Municipality Logo. The ‘shape’ establishes itself as a link between local and foreign cultures.

The shape is created from a very simple geometric principle: a 156 m in diameter sphere from which to cylinders are subtracted. One of them is a horizontal 126 m. in diameter cylinder to recreate the ‘D’ and crescent from the sides. Other is a 110 m in diameter cylinder slightly tilted from the vertical axis in order to recreate ‘D’ and crescent from above. The remaining solid is a multi-span ring structure approximately 150 m high.
How should an emblematic structure be? It should be large, be iconic, age well, have a limited program, and occupy a prominent location. Most of the world renounced iconic structures were built for a specific purpose, or were not made to last. Starting up from the will of creating a world emblem, the Zaabel Park is a great location as it provides the ‘shape’ with a prominent location, with the surrounding protection that the park offers.
Regarding the built structure it is composed out of a patterned skin of Dual-phase steel (high-strength steel) segments and interior rigidizing structure on the same material. This inner structural system also serves for the layout of the inner transport system. The high density of the skin pattern allows it to be quite thin, even considering seismic data. The geometry of the structural design resembles a traditional Islamic pattern.
Site plan and elevations. The structure is oriented following different principles: prevalent winds, solar orientation and maximizing the structure roof plan on the proposed plot without surpassing it. Besides resembling a Capital ‘D’, crescent or hawk, from the south the ‘shape’ frames the city´s present and future skyline.
The outer skin testes nowadays ecologic translucent and semitransparent films and materials. This skin is produced out of CNC milling (used in automotive industry) as well as thermo shaping, creating a double curvature double layer self cleaning glass, which a sandwiched layer of ‘E-ink©’ screens, which a allow for a change from total blindness, total transparency, total mirror or the in-between situations.

Inner structure and sphere cabling system: It is possible to see how a the cabling system is doubled on the bottom and body [permanently moving high speed cables] , and in the upper part it is reduced to a low speed disengaging tubular system [similar to those used on ski lifts]. Is is also appreciable the emergency stair system, which is doubled [one flight per ring side].

The main difference with mountain lift stribes on the 3d freedom of movement obtained trough the tripling of the cables and the use of the self leveling horizontal platform, trough a gravity and gyroscopic system mounted on the base.
A detachable sphere’ or high-speed sphere’ is a type of passenger aerial lift, which, like a fixed-grip chairlift, consists of numerous sphere’ attached to a constantly moving wire rope (called a haul rope) that is strung between two (or more) terminals over intermediate rings. The haul rope would be the dipicted in red on the side diagram. The blueline would be slow speed areas for loading/ unloading.

1. The ‘sphere’ rounds the station. 2. Black wheels provide the motion for the ‘sphere’ when it isn’t attached to the cables. [derailer in the down position] 3. The ‘sphere’ enters the derailer. [metal arms stabilize the ‘sphere’] 4. A metal strip derails the ‘sphere’ while the black wheels slow down the chair until the unloading speed is reached. 5. Sensors ensure that the grips are properly attached to the cables. 6. The ‘sphere’ in the base terminal is slowed down to the loading speed. 7. Here are brittle bars or sensors that would stop the related lift system in the event of a derailing.
