Tsunami Memorial

Events, as spoken words, go with the wind. Writing words down fixes them in History; building them up turns them eternal as a part of the world, into spaces filled with life.

1000 m

Numbers are internationally recognized, letters not. Our built characters are composed by both of them: digits expressing the exact moment when the wave hit and Thai characters which read ‘never again’. 500 m

- Exact time fixed forever to remember those who died, from all nations. - Text to honor those alive, whose lives have been touched by this event: survivors and those who assisted them. All tied together in the common goal of avoiding another natural phenomenon to cause so much damage, “never again”. These built characters are the structure which withholds exhibition, relaxation, education, contemplation and observation spaces. All of them overlook Haad Lek, where 5395 lights are placed: buoys in the sea and light poles at land.

1000 m

Each light stands for a victim. The grid on which the lights are organized stretches from 1 km out sea to the 10 m height level at land, increasing its density at the beach, where most lives were taken.
