fund for Wales Newsletter Summer 2O13

Croeso Welcome to the Summer 2013 Fund for Wales newsletter. We’ve been very busy already this year and wanted to update you on the progress of our unique National endowment Fund. Our most exciting piece of news is that we now have a £1million match challenge thanks to the Big Lottery Fund. This special grant was awarded to the Foundation to encourage giving by match funding new donations to the Fund for Wales. What better time than now to give to support Welsh communities! Big News - Double your donation

(L-R Baroness Randerson, Parlimentary Under Secretary of State for Wales; John Rose, Big Lottery Fund; Liza Kellett, Community Foundation in Wales)

To announce the Big Lottery Fund £1million match challenge we held a special reception at Westminster Hall for our supporters in London. We were delighted to be joined by Baroness Randerson, Under Secretary of State for Wales who gave the campaign her support and acknowledged the importance of establishing this special Fund supporting Welsh communities now and into the future: Wales is the only country in the World with its own community endowment Fund! Janet Lewis-Jones, Chair of the Foundation announced the challenge and endorsed our key message: together we can make a difference. Lady Wigley - Fund for Wales Ambassador - chatted with guests about why she supports and promotes the Fund for Wales. Thank you to Andrew Tuggey at the Commonwealth Parlimentary Association for hosting our reception at the historic Westminster Hall.

Making your giving easier With the Fund for Wales your charitable giving is simple and effective. You can be confident that your donations will be professionally managed and high- impact grants will be diligently made. For those giving over £25,000 the Foundation sets up your own Named Fund, tailor made with our philanthropy advisor to best deliver your giving wishes. Remember, the next £1 million of donations trigger a matched sum into the BIG Fund for Wales grants programme - doubling the impact of your giving. Those giving £10,000 or more are invited to join our Patrons Circle, with benefits including project visits and personal invitations to special receptions, and donors who give £1,000 can ‘leave their mark on Wales’ with their gift being featured on our Hiraeth Map.

Merthyr Youth Celebrates its inspiring members We were thrilled to be invited to join the 120 members of Merthyr Youth for its evening of celebration in Dowlais back in March. Despite the snow-covered hills we were given a warm welcome by the choir and the volunteer committee, all of whom are under 25! It was truly inspiring to hear how some of the members had completely turned their lives around after joining this very special youth and drama club which nurtures ambition, talent and resilience. Director Jack Law commented: “Our evening celebrates the hard work of everyone involved in our club. It’s been fantastic to show the people who’ve supported us over the last couple of years the difference that their funding has made to the lives of young people in Merthyr and our community. Thank you to the Fund for Wales for your support.”

Tafwyl On the 15th June the Fund for Wales team hosted a stand at this year’s Tafwyl, a family friendly Welsh language festival in Cardiff Castle. We introduced our new ‘daffodil head’ and Hiraeth Map combo, where people could join our community of donors by texting RHOI05 and their donation to 70070. The board was a huge success and it filled up throughout the day with people leaving their mark on Wales and telling us why they love Wales. Congratulations to all at Tafwyl for a great event, attracting over 11,000 visitors and opened by the famous welsh actor Matthew Rhys. Llongyfarchiadau!

Lady Wigley inspires ladies in Clwyd At a special private lunch in Clwyd this May, Elinor Bennett, Fund for Wales Ambassador, and Abigail Tweed, Development Associate introduced the Fund for Wales to a group of budding female philanthropists. Speaking about the role the Fund for Wales has in promoting philanthropy, Abi emphasised the value of the Foundation’s philanthropy services, and the Fund for Wales’ specific interest in funding smaller community groups which achieve so much in strengthening communities yet often fall under the radar of mainstream funders. Thank you to our Ambassador, Elinor Bennett, for spreading the Fund for Wales story.

Apply for a grant from the Fund for Wales This summer we are pleased to announce that we have raised enough endowment to run a small grants programme. We welcome small volunteer driven community groups to apply through our website for grants of between £500 and £1000. We know these small grants can really make a difference to many groups across Wales. The Summer 2013 grants round will be open from the 19th July and will close on 5th August.
