Obituary Bert Shepherd Lisameen, Ballinalee, Longford 28th June 2015
Family man who built a business
F
riends and colleagues throughout the funeral industry in Ireland and beyond were saddened to learn of the death of Bert Shepherd in late June. Bert was widely known and respected through his work in Shepherd’s Mortuary and Funeral Supplies which he founded in 2001. Bert was born in Stratford, London in 1945 and moved to Longford in 1988 to work as a paramedic. His wife Ann is well known as an embalmer and is a former president of the BIE. Through her work in Shepherd’s Embalming Services, Ann was regularly asked where chemicals and equipment could be sourced and the two recognized an opportunity to set up a firm specialising in the supply of embalming, funeral and mortuary equipment. Shepherd’s Mortuary and Funeral Supplies is a family business with Bert and son Andrew working side by side to build a company which now represents leading international suppliers such as Dodge, Auden, Leec, A.R. Twigg and Lyn Oakes. Bert will be remembered as a man who put his family first. Working closely alongside Ann, Bert was proud of his children Andrew, Matthew and Dawn and was a dearly loved grandfather of Daniel, Laura, Ciaran, Ava, Nicole, Luke, William and Oliver and his daughters-in-law Tracey and Erin and son-in-law Ted. Bert is survived by his brother Steve. It is a sign of a remarkable life that a man born in London should earn the respect of friends and colleagues from around the world who, if not in person, were there in spirit with him and his family in his adopted home of Longford when Bert Shepherd was laid to rest.

It’s Show Time Again!
Preparations are well under way for the biennial Funeral Times Trade Show Ireland® 2015 which takes place at Citywest Hotel & Conference Centre, Saggart, Co. Dublin on Tuesday 29th and Wednesday 30th September.
I
nterest from exhibitors for this year’s event has exceeded the 2013 level - itself a huge success - and extra space has had to be acquired to accommodate all the stands, with many exhibiting for the first time. An impressive line-up of speakers has been assembled for the Seminar Pavilion to give talks and presentations on topics of specific interest to the funeral industry in Ireland. The representative bodies are getting behind the Show and have scheduled meetings and membership programmes to coincide with the event. Apart from the important commercial aspect, the organisers aim to create a family atmosphere and social occasion where members of the wider industry can meet in a
relaxed environment to share views and exchange opinion. On both days free breakfast and refreshments will be provided to visitors who arrive before 10.45am. For those (partners) who want to make a day of it free vouchers are available for the nearby Kildare Village and Newbridge Silverware outlets. “We are delighted with the level of interest”, says Ruth McQuillan, Show Director. “We are expecting a record attendance and we are confident there will be something for everyone at this year’s event”, she added. Funeral Times Trade Show Ireland® 2015 at Citywest, Co. Dublin on Tuesday and Wednesday 29th / 30th September from 9.30am - 5.00pm daily. Admission free, trade only. FuneralTimes | 5

Photo: Adrian Donohoe “After a lifetime in the trade we understand the flexibility and service levels which are demanded by families and funeral directors and will always strive to work with funeral directors to ensure that the families are given the most trouble-free and professional service possible. While the shorter travelling distance will appeal to many, there are a number of other reasons why funeral directors will choose Lakelands Crematorium. We will work hard to keep our standards high right from the initial phone call, through to the very end and will be available to offer help and advice with all aspects of the funeral and cremation process.”
Lakelands Crematorium is situated on a superb site on the Dublin Road close to the N3 and N55 providing great transport links to all parts of the country. It overlooks beautiful remembrance gardens including a memorial wall and a relaxing water feature. “We have worked very hard to create a peaceful and tranquil setting in order to provide a sense of comfort to grieving families and friends. We tried to achieve this both inside and outside with the remembrance gardens and the beautiful forest scene shown on the wall of our main chapel.” Declan would welcome a conversation with any funeral director. “I want to speak to as many colleagues from the industry as possible and demonstrate to them that Lakelands Crematorium is ready to provide their clients with a first rate, professional service and that the team here will cooperate fully with the funeral director and assist in any way we can.” Lakelands Crematorium is open 7 days a week and there is no surcharge for weekends or bank holidays. Celebrating 10 years service to Funeral Directors in Ireland G
M Canopies is pleased to be celebrating 10 years of service to Funeral Directors and Monumental Sculptors in Ireland. One of the first Funeral Directors to purchase a Vitabri Professional Funeral Canopy in June 2005 was Charles Lynch, Funeral Director, Castlederg, Co Tyrone. He recently commented on how much the canopy had been used throughout the years and yet, ten years on, it is still in perfect condition and used on a regular basis. He, like many Funeral Directors, uses it outside his funeral home, for removals, at ‘wake houses’ and at graveside interments. Vitabri ‘professional’ canopies are manufactured in France to a very high standard, sourcing quality materials and fabrics from Italy, France and Germany. All Vitabri canopies have a two year
warranty, are available in fourteen sizes and thirty three colours. Bespoke printing, as requested by each Funeral Director, is completed at the Vitabri Manufacturing Plant in France to ensure that work is carried out to the highest standard using specialised printing techniques with experienced graphic designers in this field. To celebrate our 10thAnniversary GM Canopies is offering FREE ‘PERSONALISED’ PRINTING on all ‘Vitabri ‘professional’ canopies purchased during the 2015 Funeral Times Trade Show. Celebrating the first 500 with Fearghas Quinn O
n 25th August, the finishing touches were made to a new Insignia 5 Door hearse. The vehicle was being prepared to be collected by Nicky Doran of Kilkeel, a long-term customer of Fearghas Quinn. In fact, the longest term, as Nicky bought the first ever Fearghas Quinn hearse. Over the years, customers like Nicky have been impressed with the high build quality, longevity and practicality of vehicles coupled with a desire to facilitate and accommodate the Nicky and Fearghas reminisce over vehicle no.1 customer’s need for extras and special requests. Indeed, Nicky’s new vehicle is also the latest landmark, hearse number 500. The first 500 have seen a continual evolution of technology. Inspired by German engineering and European styles, each aspect of coachbuilding is continually enhanced and

Fearghas Quinn staff with vehicle 500 improved upon. Quinn innovation led to the first hearse in Ireland to pass the optional type approval testing in 2001, the first slideout underdeck drawer and has resulted in award-winning research and development. And the evolution continues. Fearghas’ son Paddy leads the way in specialist refinishing, bringing vehicle paintwork to the next level, sharing his father’s passion for quality coachbuilding.
The 15 long term staff of Fearghas Quinn Hearse and Limousine are already looking to the future, getting ready to unveil two exciting new designs for the Funeral Times Trade Show 2015, with more to come. “I’m delighted to supply Nicky with the 500th vehicle we have built,” said Fearghas. “The last 20 years have passed by so quickly, and I look forward to producing the next 500.”

Caring for your loved ones Linda Keady explains what it means for her to be a Civil Celebrant
L
istening to what my clients have to say is very important so that I can really hear what they want. When I meet people who have lost loved ones, or indeed, people wishing to leave instructions for the arrangements of their own funerals, I go with no agenda, completely open minded. It is a humbling experience dealing with people in their time of ultimate grief, so my job is to work as closely as possible with them, to ensure that their wishes are carried out in the way that they want. They can rest assured that my abilities to arrange the most fitting tribute to their loved ones will be carried out with respect, dignity, professionalism and empathy for what they are going through at this time. My website www.civilfuneralcelebrants. com will explain some of the finer details and I welcome enquiries from anyone needing my services.
When I receive a call from a person wishing to have a non-religious service, arrangements will be made to visit and find out everything about the person who has passed on. After that meeting, which will be done without delay, a fitting eulogy will be prepared and shown to the client for changes and their final approval. Â We will work together to decide where they would like the service to be held and ensure that everything is done just right. My mission is to give every assistance to the family during this time and I always keep in touch afterwards to see if there is anything that can be done to help them in their grieving process. Grieving has no time limits and everyone deals with these situations differently. To finish, everyone will be offered care, dignity and respect and a lot more, and together we will get it right.

Mrs McAlinden for the honour. “I will be accepting the award for all at the South Lough Neagh Regeneration Association in recognition of all their work. “I am so proud to be part of this group,” said Mary. Mary will be heading to Hillsborough in September to accept her award and next year goes to London to attend the Queen’s Garden Party. South Lough Neagh Regeneration Association is a cross community organisation. It was established in November 1993 by community representatives as a response to the social isolation and economic stagnation of the area.

Write to be heard! before thin calm your k t h oughts picture plan calm tful e c a e p spring those
hy not
hoever I’m working with on the design of a Funeral, you’ll hear me explain at some point about how the draft script is likely to look. I prepare clients for a piece of writing that will be sent to them, which at times looks odd. At various points, it will feel awkward to read. And I can guarantee that it would fail any academic, English language or grammar test! The reason is simple. My ceremonies are written to be ‘heard’ and not to be simply ‘read’ and I write them hearing myself saying the very words I put together. When I’m delivering a ceremony, the language, pace, tone, punctuation and overall presentation carries just as much weight, if not more sometimes, than the actual written content. Writing to be ‘heard’ is very different from writing pieces of work that are to be read and digested. When you’re writing to be heard, you’re
writing for immediate impact! It’s about thinking through every single word you use. It’s a different skill set and not everyone understands it. In my design work, I make use of language patterns. I systematically hit all of the senses. I speak in colour as well as in ‘black and white’. I draw from the past as well as walk people into the future. I talk ‘big picture’ alongside the detail … and lots, lots more. It all helps to create a ceremony that’s engaging, captivating and unforgettable and any celebrant worth their weight in gold should be able to explain how they do this too! Your ceremonies are a one off experience. You won’t get a second chance to run them again. So if you’ve got a celebrant in mind for your celebration, then do ask them how they approach their writing and presenting. You owe it to yourselves to have the best.

This range comes under JC Atkinson’s Guardian Casket brand and is supplied in partnership with America's ‘Aurora Casket Company’, one of the largest and most respected casket manufacturers in the United States of America. This new range encompasses a wide variety of both solid wood and metal American Caskets, including many with special features such as memory tubes and velvet interiors. It is what they call ‘The Aurora Difference’ and this fitted perfectly with the way JC Atkinson operates in the UK. Bill Jones, Aurora’s Director of Distributer Sales said “We are delighted to have come together with JC Atkinson to offer Aurora Caskets to the United Kingdom. The machine comes in two models, with the standard giving a blast area of 1200 mm x 1200 mm and the deluxe extending to 1200 mm x 1600 mm. The Tornado has been designed to be as user friendly as possible with multistage blasting, allowing different areas to be engraved to different depths, all programmable via a simple Windows interface. The machine operates on singlephase electrics and is extremely flexible, with operation designed for a level trolley or forklift-mounted headstone.

Alan has demonstrated an inclusive attitude and real commitment to the profession and his contribution is, by any stretch of the imagination, outstanding.” Alan Slater added: “This is our second high profile award in three months for the newlook Funeral Director Monthly and is an award we particularly value. We work hard to make sure that it is the leading business publication for the funeral sector, but it is also great to know that the magazine can hold its own against the best in class across all trade associations in the UK. “On a personal note, it was very flattering and humbling to receive the Outstanding Contribution award, particularly as it is in recognition of a job I have loved doing. I am grateful to Linda for her comments and it is rewarding to feel both that I have helped to make a difference and that this has been valued.”

Formaldehyde hits the headlines Last month the NAFD responded swiftly to calm fears raised by US-based research of a possible link between the use of formaldehyde in embalming by funeral directors and the risk of developing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as motor neurone disease (MND).
I
n a statement published by national media in the UK, NAFD Chief Executive Officer, Alan Slater, said: “With bereaved families increasingly requesting to view their loved ones in chapels of rest, together with a lengthening time period between death and the funeral, embalming is in common use by funeral firms as the only effective method of delaying decomposition and preserving the appearance of a deceased person. “As the main trade association for the profession, the National Association of Funeral Directors requires its 3,800 funeral home members to abide by a Code of Professional Standards which includes strict guidelines on the safe use and storage
of all chemicals used in the care of bodies, including formaldehyde. These guidelines include the use of appropriate protective clothing and equipment, ensuring all HSE and COSHH health and safety standards are met and a strict adherence to manufacturers’ instructions. In addition, many NAFD funeral directors study for the professional qualifications offered by the British Institute of Embalmers. “As a result of the sensible approach of our members in abiding by these various requirements the NAFD has not, to date, been made aware of any health-related issues amongst member firms as a result of proximity to embalming fluid.” FuneralTimes | 43

DJ Mac Neice show their wares T
his was DJ Mac Neice’s fourth year exhibiting at the National Funeral Exhibition in Stoneleigh and it was by far our most successful thus far. Situated in hall 2, in the same pitch as the last show, we were perfectly positioned alongside two large hearse companies. Our stand was ideally placed and saw high levels of foot fall over the course of the three day event, with attendance up 6% on the previous year to 3226 visitors over the three days, its highest ever. We had a completely redesigned stand this year, which was complimented on many times. It was designed so as to give maximum exposure to all the products displayed. As well as demonstrating the Print-A-Plate system to our UK customers, we had a full range of DJ Mac Neice products on display. Over the course of the four shows we’ve attended, the interest in our products from customers in the UK has continued to gather pace. The quality of the items in conjunction with competitive pricing have combined to great effect in enticing growing numbers of UK customers over the years. Our main item attracting attention was our coffin positioner which generated much interest and discussion from funeral directors and cemetery committees alike. We built a replica grave so people could really get a feel for the device, how it works, and its benefits. Positioned on top of it was our ever

In a market moving more and more towards cremation as the funeral of choice, our range of urns received a very warm welcome, in particular our range of handcrafted Aston oak urns. There was also a great interest in our plastic handles, a budget-friendly option for both cremations and burials. As always, our umbrellas and traffic cones were big sellers, especially now we offer the option of having your name printed on the cones. Overall it was a very successful show with lots of new customers on board. It’s always nice to meet our existing UK customers for a catch up and put faces to the names of those we have not met yet. It was also great to see such a strong contingent of Irish funeral directors and embalmers in attendance and to get to catch up with them as well. Michael Collins and Arthu in annual commemoratio Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation, Richard Bruton TD, Minister of State at the Departments of Finance and Public Expenditure & Reform, Simon Harris TD, and Chairman of the Glasnevin Trust, John Green led proceedings at the 93rd annual Collins Griffith commemoration at Glasnevin Cemetery.
T
he event was marked by the laying of wreaths at the grave of General Michael Collins by Minister Richard Bruton, and the grave of Arthur Griffith by Minister Simon Harris. Throughout the ceremony there was music from the ‘Invincibles’ band, prose from Seamus Scally and prayers from Geraldine Dalton. The annual oration at the graveside of Michael Collins was given by former editor of the Irish Times, Conor Brady. As part of the Defence Force’s participation, the Sliabh na mBan armoured car was also in attendance. The Sliabh na mBan formed part of Michael Collins’ convoy which was ambushed on 22nd August 1922 at Béal na mBláth in West Cork, resulting in the tragic death of General Collins. Following the wreath laying ceremony, a new portrait of Michael Collins, by Belfast artist Noel Murphy, was unveiled in the Glasnevin Cemetery Museum gallery. The painting’s contemporary style and poignant historic reference will sit in harmony within Glasnevin Museum’s new building, beside the grave of General Collins. The Collins Griffith commemoration was followed by the Roger Casement commemoration, the highlight of which was the annual Casement lecture delivered by resident Glasnevin Cemetery Historian, Conor Dodd. Entitled “Execution? The final year of Roger Casement”, the lecture marked the upcoming centenary of his execution, and discussed the final year of the

Cavan leads the way! ‘I’ve seen you in the Funeral Times’; I heard this greeting four times in the space of an hour at the opening of Lakelands Crematorium in Cavan, back in August. This was followed by one Funeral Director who commented ‘you don’t look anything like your photograph,’ which I found amusing. It just goes to prove that the Funeral Times is essential reading for Funeral Directors across the country. I first met Declan Finnegan of Lakelands Crematorium at the Funeral Times Trade Show in 2013 and, following a visit to Cavan, we very quickly realised that we could work together. Many people have said to me across the years that Civil Funerals would not catch on in the rural areas of Ireland, however the people of Cavan have proved that to be wrong. In the space of a year I have carried out seven funerals from Cavan, both burials and cremations, and the comments from those attending have been very positive. A lot of people remarked afterwards that they were nervous attending the funeral because they did not know what it was going to be like or were afraid that it was going to be a ‘show’ or in some way disrespectful. Needless to say, their fears were allayed and they were hugely impressed
and reassured with the highly personal and respectful nature of the services, also appreciating the fact that humour and laughter may be used as part of the service without taking away from the dignity of the occasion. What most surprised me at the open days in Lakelands in Cavan was the number of gentlemen and ladies of older generations who I spoke to who were in favour of, or at the very least open to, doing things differently, including one gentleman who asked could he have his favourite Larry Cunningham song played. I was pleased to advise him that he could and he left a happy man, humming away. Cavan is making serious strides in the funerary profession, bidding to lead the way in the rural counties, and I expect that this will continue with an increasing uptake and demand among all age groups for civil funerals. Civil funerals are available countrywide, not just in Cavan! Should you have any expressions of interest or simply wish to discuss the vast range of options, please do get in touch. Dr Bill Webster A beginner’s guide to endings W
ell, we’ve come a long way, baby, but we are finally there. I refer to the fact that the first baby boomers have a significant birthday this year and it begins with a 7! That’s right, the generation that refused to trust anyone over thirty is fast approaching seventy, many kicking and screaming. Mind you, just to illustrate the reality that “nothing changes”, I recently developed an “app” for students, parents and teachers on “Grief and Crisis Management”. I was recommended a bright young media guy in his mid-20’s whose impressive experience in video suggested he would make an excellent producer. But when he found out it was ME who would be the host of the programme, he bailed. “Young people only relate to people of their OWN generation,” was his sage suggestion to my proposal. “Doesn’t experience count for anything,” I protested, adding somewhat cynically, “Can you suggest someone of your generation who has the knowledge, insight and experience to …” And then I had to LAUGH! Good heavens! We baby boomers said exactly the same thing forty years ago! Maybe we haven’t come as far as we think, baby! But this talented guy, full of energy and vision, actually taught me a valuable lesson. I am NOT 25. I would like to think I still have much to offer, and that “I ain’t finished yet”, and all that good stuff, but he is RIGHT! It is getting close to the time when I, and people of my generation, should begin to fade from the picture. As Pablo Coelho wisely writes: “It is always important to know when something has 56 | FuneralTimes
reached its end. Closing circles, shutting doors, finishing chapters, it doesn’t matter what we call it; what matters is to leave in the past those moments in life that are over.” Actually I was doing OK with the impending shift into my seventies until I attended a funeral last week. The family had procured the services of the dourest minister ever, because the kindest word I can say about the service was that it was “gloomy.” He read from Psalm 90, “The years of our lives are threescore and ten, and even if by strength four score; yet their span is but toil and trouble.” It wouldn’t have been so bad but he seemed to be looking right at ME! Threescore and ten? Wait a minute. That’s 70. Is he talking to ME? It was like a doomsday warning. I felt depressed for days afterwards. While I feel confident (at least as confident that one can be in this uncertain world) that this is NOT my final article before slipping into my dotage, nonetheless, baby boomers are closing in on their mortality. Of course, mortality is not just an issue of the elderly, as we of all professions have observed, but there comes a time when we all have to face the fact that life, even at its longest, is brief and will inevitably come to an end. “I always had this idea that you should never give up a happy middle in the hopes of a happy ending, because there is no such thing as a happy ending. Do you know what I mean? There is always so much to lose.” (John Green) I remember my grandfather’s warning about this, telling a seven year old Bill that “life would go so quickly.” I also recall he gave me that advice on a Sunday. We weren’t allowed to go out to play on Sundays in those days and
I was more worried that MONDAY would never come. Somehow the message doesn’t seem important when you have the whole of life stretched out before you. “I am almost a hundred years old; waiting for the end, and thinking about the beginning. There are things I need to tell you, but would you listen if I told you how quickly time passes? I know you are unable to imagine this. Nevertheless, I can tell you that you will awake someday to find that your life has rushed by at a speed at once impossible and cruel. The most intense moments will seem to have occurred only yesterday.” (Meg Rosoff “What I was”) Flipping through the TV channels the other day, I noticed a movie with a title that made
me sit up. It was called “A Beginner’s Guide to Endings.” The plot involves three brothers. Upon learning that they only have a few days left to live due to a botched drug research experiment, the three set off to try to reverse a lifetime of mistakes. The coarse language was a bit too “salty” for us, so I confess I didn’t watch the whole thing. But the title was GREAT. We all need a “Beginner’s Guide to Endings” … hopefully with the resolve to take notice and act accordingly. But there’s a trick to the “graceful exit.” It begins with the ability and foresight to recognize when a job, a stage of life, or a relationship is over — and let it go. It means leaving what’s “over” without denying its validity or its past significance to our lives. It
I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live.
FuneralTimes | 57
involves a sense of future, a belief that every exit line is an indication that we are moving up, rather than moving out. Erik Erikson points out that all human development is rooted in our “sense of identity.” How we get along with others; how we interpret the success of the contribution we are making in our world; how we are able to accept the “inevitability of life”; everything is dependent on how we see ourselves. Unfortunately not everyone gains that important insight. That is why so many find retirement difficult, because they have interpreted “who they are” by “what they DO” and are unwilling to let that go. Many go to great lengths by plastic surgery or other means to create the illusion of youth. We all know someone who finds it difficult or impossible to recognize that it is time to surrender to the inevitable, whether in professional sport, in the workplace, or even in a situation where simply acknowledging that age or infirmity has created the need to be admitted to a nursing home or care facility. Their problem is rooted in an unwillingness to acknowledge what is painfully obvious to everyone else; namely that it’s not just the times that have changed, it is ME who has changed. And the only question is “Am I willing to accept that I and my circumstances have changed, and embrace that unavoidable truth; or will I stubbornly resist and pretend that everything is the same as it has always been. It is finding the security to accept that “This is who I am NOW” that gives us the confidence to move ahead; ultimately recognizing that while what we DO is important, who and what we ARE is of infinitely more importance. Mortality is not just about death. It is about
the fact that our life is drawing to a conclusion, and we worry that we have not lived it to the full. As Antoine St. Expurey once put it, “O to reach the point of death and realize that you have never really lived.” The ultimate tragedy is not death; it is a life that is unlived. And I think THAT is what we all fear and struggle with the most. Yet the biggest challenge is letting go the myth, which we all bought into, that a good life means “living happily ever after.” As Scott Westerfield put it, “What did a happy ending even mean in real life, anyway? In stories you simply said, ‘They lived happily ever after,’ and that was it. But in real life people had to keep on living, day after day, year after year.” So after the funeral, as you may have guessed, I was feeling pretty depressed about this whole issue. My son and his family were visiting last week and we had the opportunity to play golf. I was actually only 3 strokes behind him after 15 holes, which is a major achievement for me. The course marshal drove past and cheerfully asked, “How is your game going.” “Not too bad for an old guy” I said. He jumped out of his cart and asked “How old are you, sonny?” And before I could answer, he continued, “I’m 83 and I play 3 rounds of golf every week. You’re only as old as you feel.” I felt strangely encouraged by that encounter! So, a credo for aging baby boomers: “I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. Life is no ‘brief candle’ to me. It is sort of a splendid torch which I have a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it over to future generations.” (George Bernard Shaw)

Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) D uring this year, SAIF have supported the Virtual Dementia Training facility, (starting with SAIF becoming Dementia Friendly) supplied by Training2Care UK Ltd, based in Feering, Essex. Obviously to do this all the staff at SAIF Business Centre were required to do the training which they undertook earlier this year. Although much research has gone into this debilitating illness, statistics cannot be 100% accurate, and no one can really know exactly how a victim feels. But, having a small insight into their world can only be for the better for those afflicted as well as those around them, whether it be family, nursing staff or carers. SAIF members across the country have supported the Virtual Dementia Tour by sponsoring the tour for nursing staff, held training days, and enrolled their own staff, thus ensuring that their funeral home

Emaciation system and guidelines By Jack Adams CFSP, MBIE
F
amilies don’t know about embalming or what results can be achieved unless we communicate to them information about the condition of the body and that our staff tries hard to do their very best every time. I know some conscientious funeral directors who are very successful because they believe in the value of embalming. We live in a time when the economy is down and people want to see the value of every dollar they spend for every service rendered. How can some funeral directors be building their business while others are showing substantial decreases? In the case of the successful funeral directors that I know, it’s all about the body. A well-embalmed, recognisable remains sets the tone and complements all the other personalised, good service gestures of the funeral. If you care enough to do your best with the body, that philosophy carries over to all the rest of your custom made family services. A viewing of any kind will be a more pleasant experience for the family if their loved one is recognisable with a pleasant appearance. A severe emaciation case could be turned into an opportunity to show the family that you are not only communicating with them, but that your team tries very hard to do their best with such difficult cases. Emaciation or loss of weight can be moderate or extreme. Moderate weight loss can many times be treated by adding a humectant chemical to the solution to be injected and by doing some restorative feature building to important facial areas that are now flat or dehydrated in appearance. To me, extreme emaciation means an individual who has lost nearly half their body weight or, for example, 68 | FuneralTimes

the individual who weighed 150 pounds and now weighs 80 to 100 pounds. People describe such individuals as being “skin and bones.” The face has lost all its identifying lines and markings, and bones are protruding that were never seen before. The eyes are so sunken that they are unable to close and a dried weather line is evident across the eye centre. The effects of the disease has distorted the appearance of the individual and rendered them unrecognisable. Photographs are helpful with all cases, especially for re-forming the mouth and identifiable features and lines of the face such as the nasolabial folds. Once you’ve established the expectations of the family regarding the emaciation case, you can follow a system. EMACIATION SYSTEM • Communicate with the family about the deceased’s overall condition, their weight loss, the time frame of the weight loss, and their expectations regarding viewing. Would they like to be able to view for identification or do they really want to say goodbye to the loved one that they remember, an older, perhaps, but a healthy looking grandma? If they would prefer to have grandma resemble that picture of a healthy grandma, you can at least say you will do your best to make that happen. You have just received a personal challenge that could be turned into a great opportunity. You accept the challenge without guarantees, but be sure to ask for photos. Just by trying, you’re telling your family that you really care and you’re showing them that they made a good choice of funeral homes because your team tries harder.
• Evaluate the body condition. Most likely, there have been drugs or drug therapy involved that will make preservation difficult to achieve. How severe is the emaciation? What is the condition of tissue? Is it spongy? If so, it could be difficult to adequately preserve. • Set the features. Take special care with the eyes, cheeks, nose, mouth, and nasolabial folds. Setting features while treating the emaciated case is difficult and even more care than usual should be taken. You can’t just close a mouth and begin embalming such a case because in the end you often need to fill out or raise a cheek over an inch, and injecting enough Feature Builder to accomplish this would just stretch the skin and expand it, creating a similar appearance to a Botox overload. Even if you were able to restore the size of the face back to near normal, all the natural lines would be lost due to the skin being stretched. It would be similar to blowing up a balloon, leaving you with a face that didn’t at all resemble the living person. • Form the upper lids. If the eyes are severely sunken, normal closure isn’t practical before embalming. The severely emaciated body will show a weather line on the eyelid because most likely the person was unable to close their eyes prior to death because they were so severely sunken. A temporary eye closure can be created by placing cotton covered with some Kalip Stay Cream under the upper eyelids. This gives a natural, raised form to the upper lid. The remaining eye restoration can be done following the arterial injection. • If the nose is flattened or distorted, cotton or Inr-Seel can be placed in the nostrils to fill out the wings to restore a more natural shape. • The mouth closure: Because of weight loss, I like to think of the mouth closure as also being temporary. This important mouth and cheek zone shouldn’t be embalmed in the “skin and bones” condition. If it is, it will probably be impossible to achieve a recognisable condition. The mouth and cheeks can
initially be overfilled in the cheek area or corners of the mouth using Poze. This overfill can be manually forced under the sunken protruding cheek bones, now making it possible to form some lines and create a foundation for a normal appearance. Without taking this step, one would need to use Feature Builder to raise the cheek area as much as 1 ½ inches. • The head embalming solution: Because we are dealing with a “skin and bones” appearance, it is important to naturally plump up the tissue during the arterial injection. I would recommend a ½ gallon solution consisting of 8oz. of Chromatech Pink, 8 oz. of Metaflow, 8oz. of Rectifiant, 20oz. of Restorative, and 20oz. of warm water. This ½ gallon solution would be appropriate for the extreme emaciation case. Usually injecting a quarter per each side of the head is adequate. Inject using pulsation starting with a rate of flow of 3 to 5 ounces per minute. • Once you see that the chemical is distributing well, slowly increase the rate of flow (8 to 10 ounces per minute) to maintain an even plumping effect. This procedure can sometimes plump or evenly swell facial tissues ¼ inch to ½ inch. The creation of this ‘buffer zone’ is very important for restoring a natural
FuneralTimes | 69
appearance to the “skin and bones” case where sometimes the eyes are sunken as much as two inches. With the use of this type of solution for the head, when feature building this case, you will be able to raise the tissue easily when injecting Feature Builder naturally without the unnatural stretched out look. The unnatural stretched out look is the reason that you hear some embalmers say, “You can only raise the tissue so much.” This is true if you inject these cases with a standard solution. The bulking up of the facial tissue allows us to use the Feature Builder to accurately restore the identity that has left through disease process. This is the most important procedure in order to establish a good foundation for a successful extreme emaciation restoration. • Following the injection, separate the connective tissue of the eyelids and raise the eye to proper levels using Inr-Seel or cotton covered with Kalip Stay Cream. All emaciated cases, especially the severe ones, demand good communication with the family.
What are their expectations? Sometimes we act on our own expectations or have little communication with the family because their wishes may force us out of our comfort zone. These severe cases are now common, but raising our skill levels and working a little out of the box are the sure ways to meet these challenges. If you follow the system, you will at least have given the family a chance to say goodbye to a loved one they recognise rather than having a closed casket. Beaumont Funeral Directors begin Eulogica implementation Lanigan Funeral Directors, of Beaumont and Cabra, have begun the implementation of a bespoke Eulogica funeral administration system.
A
fter a detailed evaluation of all the options available, they decided that Eulogica offers the package to suit their requirements. “Our instinct was that the Eulogica system was the right one for us,” explains Eddie Buckmaster of Lanigan’s, “but we needed to examine all of the available options to be sure of making the right decision. The Eulogica team patiently answered our questions, and took the time to make sure we were happy with our choice.” In July, Eddie and Corah attended a oneday Eulogica session at Citywest Hotel, which combined training with tailoring and customising the Eulogica system to their needs. Eulogica’s Client Support Manager Nick Stokes explains, “Eddie and Corah felt that the most efficient way to implement their Eulogica system would be for them to spend some time with me, going through the basics of using the system, and at the same time tailoring the software to meet their specific needs.” Eddie concludes, “The training day was very useful. To see the Eulogica system taking shape and really reflecting the way we work was quite remarkable. We’re looking forward to really getting into using the system, and with Nick’s help, fine tuning it to fit our business.” For more information from please contact Eulogica Ltd, Regus House, Harcourt Centre, Harcourt Road, Dublin 2 Tel: 01 431 9760 / Fax: 01 431 9761 / Email: nbs@eulogica.com 72 | FuneralTimes

Residents of Inchicore volunteer to help clean up Goldenbridge after targeted vandalism O
ver one hundred local Inchicore residents took part in a clean-up day, organised by Glasnevin Trust, to repair some of the damage done to the recently vandalised Goldenbridge Cemetery. Members of the “We Love Inchicore” and “Keogh Square” community groups arrived to the Cemetery in their droves at 11am on Saturday 29th August to show their support for Glasnevin Trust and to lend a helping hand to repair some of the damage. Commenting on the attendance levels at the event and the plans to reopen the cemetery in 2016 was George McCullough, CEO of the Glasnevin Trust: “I am truly overwhelmed by the response we’ve had to our clean-up day appeal. The people of Inchicore and the surrounding areas have done a fabulous job and we are very grateful. Unfortunately the cemetery has been the target of destructive vandalism on a number of occasions in the past couple of years but the turnout for today’s event shows me there is still a passion for this cemetery and the history beyond its gates”. “The Glasnevin Trust and Richmond Barracks are currently working together to open these important national historical sites for May 2016. Having both these significant sites open to the public again will not only benefit the local people in Inchicore Sisters Maureen and Brid Hand from the Naas Road, lend a helping hand

The history of Goldenbridge Cemetery has gone untold for over a hundred years but from May 2016 the public will have the opportunity reacquaint themselves with its vast rich history”. Volunteers who attended the clean-up day were given a guided tour of the grounds and monuments by resident Glasnevin Trust historian Conor Dodd and an outline of the work that will be carried out by the Glasnevin Trust over the coming year. Goldenbridge is a 19th century ‘garden’ cemetery. After the passing of the ‘Act of Easement of Burial Bills’ in 1824, a committee was established to administer the proposed cemetery. The cemetery was purchased in 1828 and the first burial took place on the 15th October of that year. Golden Bridge Cemetery was the first Catholic cemetery built in Dublin after Catholic Emancipation and was purchased by Daniel O’Connell for £600. FuneralTimes | 73

Jim took advantage of our same day deck fitting service, offered on site at the factory in Westhoughton. The removal vehicle adds to the Coleman Milne Mk10 Cardinal Hearse and a Dorchester Limousine purchased in 2012.

New Coleman Milne vehicle for Jacksons Jacksons of Silsden (originally Jacksons Motor Services) was established in 1904 by Tom Jackson, the great grandfather of Susan Arthington and David Thornton who now own and operate the business along with their uncle John Baghurst. Jacksons carry out around a thousand funerals a year as carriage masters for a client base of eleven funeral directors, as well as arranging and conducting upwards of 150 funerals a year through their two funeral homes in Silsden and Cross Hills. Jacksons run an immaculate fleet of Mercedes hearses and limousines and recently purchased two used Mercedes E211, both aged five years old, from Coleman Milne before deciding to buy the new Mercedes E212 Hearse, as pictured. 74 | FuneralTimes

Sleeping in coffins By Mattie Lennon
Coffin beds in a Salvation Army Shelter

T
he four penny coffin (also referred to as a coffin house) is a Victorian term that described one of the first homeless shelters to be created for the people of central London. It was operated by the Salvation Army during the late 19th and early 20th centuries to provide comfort and aid to its destitute clients. If you thought that an attic-flat in Ranelagh or the MRI scanner were claustrophobic or that the ‘geki-sema share houses’ in Tokyo, Japan, are so tiny that they don’t have room for anything except sleeping, think again. Have you ever slept in a coffin? Apart from vampires and goths, very few people have a desire to sleep in an actual coffin. When George Ryan was doing research for his book Vexed at his Own Funeral, he spent a night sleeping in a coffin in a Dublin funeral parlour. The funeral director claimed that he didn’t ask for permission but George assured me that he did. “... I was generously granted permission to lie for an hour and a half in a coffin, in Clonsilla, on my own, with the light off. I spent most of the time wondering who’d be the next to enter that coffin.” For the past 23 years, a Brazilian man named Zeli Ferreira Rossi, 61, has been 76 | FuneralTimes
going to sleep every Friday night, not in bed, but straight into a real coffin. This unusual exercise is in memory of a friend of his who died. One “coffin-sleeper” had this to say, “... if I ever met the right woman, we’d probably construct a two-person coffin shaped bed for ourselves. Complete with a removable lid.” I read the following in the Nigerian Tribune (I don’t confine my reading to the Wicklow People.); “Coffins are never intended to be just another item of relaxation like sofas or even beds. But some people do not see them like that. Coffins, to them, are just items of wood and it does not matter at all if the tired takes a nap in them. Whether they are called coffins (their original name) or caskets (originally a box for jewellery), these boxes for the dead, to those who make them, are cool means of livelihood, as well as for rest, while waiting for customers.” There are some provincial temples in Thailand, such as at Nakhon Nayok, that specialize in the coffin ceremony with Buddhist monks providing the blessings. For a fee of around 200 Baht (a merit-making donation to the temple) participants lay in the coffin holding
flowers. The lid is then shut as the monks chant death rites. Just over a minute later as the monks chant about new life, the coffin is opened and the participants are ‘reborn’ leaving behind their bad karma. If, in future years, the participant endures a spell of bad luck or misfortune, they may again opt for the coffin ceremony to bring about a reversal in their luck. I asked an undertaker in west Wicklow if he had ever slept in a coffin. He answered in the negative but eloquently shared the following story with me. “My funeral parlour is contiguous to a junior academy, where there appears to be reluctance among the moulders-of-theminds-of-the-young to have lessons on refinement and good behaviour included in the curriculum with the result that their charged believed that sneaking in and placing a cigarette between the lips of the dear departed came under the heading of “hilarity. They didn’t perceive their actions to be in any way repugnant
to the protocol of obsequies. Having, on several occasions, failed to catch the culprits I hatched a plan. I arranged for one of my staff to carry out the necessary cosmetic treatment on my visage. I lay down in a coffin and waited. Sure enough, when the scholars were let out from school, two of them visited me and placed a John Player Blue in my mouth. I elevated my torso and when it was parallel with the perpendicular I politely asked, “may I have a light please.’ When Mark Twain was living in London in 1909, his cousin Dr. Jim Clemens, who also lived in London, died. The media of the day took it to be Mark Twain and published, what it assumed to be, suitable obituaries. Mark Twain was amused and went to the morgue and declared afterwards, “The moment I saw the corpse I knew it wasn’t me... And while I have you, have you ever come across a shorter obituary than, “His brother was worse.

An unlikely link explored by Olde Ireland - FDR and the funeral trade
L
egislation around funeral practices is a hot topic, as heavily debated and scrutinized in Ireland as anywhere else. With governments becoming increasingly involved in the enforcement of the mediafavourite buzzwords ‘fair trade’ and ‘fair practice’, it is interesting to wonder; how long has this been the case? We have kindly been presented with some context into the fair funeral practices of the United States in the time of FDR and his ‘New Deal’ policy, thanks to pioneering work from Galway-based Olde Ireland. Following the financial turmoil at home over the last decade, local coachbuilders supplying the funeral trade during that time might wonder if similar legislation may have been considered in Ireland! As part of its digitizing work, Olde Ireland recently came across a number of historical publications relating to aspects of the funeral sector which we thought may be of interest to funeral directors. Olde Ireland came across an old book “Fair Trade Practices for the Funeral Vehicle and Ambulance” which was approved into law by executive order in November 1933 by the then US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Many of our readers may have an interest in the diverse funerary rights and customs occurring around the world, whether this be by ethnic, religious, geographic or alternative measures. However, while customs, traditions and practices continue to change - and our funeral sector is no different to other sectors of life in this regard - some issues relating to funerals in the USA have been regulated for many generations, and one in particular was even approved by the President of the United States himself! A sub-division of the then (US) Automobile

Manufacturing Industry, this booklet was issued by the National Recovery Administration (NRA) and at the time was a Supplement to the Code of Fair Competition for that Industry. Its publication followed a 4-year/40% drop in the sales of funeral vehicles and ambulances (following the 1929 ‘Wall Street’ crash) and these new fair trade codes, stated under six articles and agreed by c. 80% of the US automotive sector, were intended to assist the recovery and rehabilitation of this sub-division of the US Automobile Manufacturing sector. Article I, detailing the general purpose of the document outlines how ‘Pursuant to Article X of the Code of Fair Competition for the Automobile Manufacturing Industry, duly approved by the President on August 26, 1933, the following provisions relating to fair trade practices for the Funeral Vehicle and Ambulance Subdivision of the Automobile Manufacturing Industry’. Further, we find Article III, describing in detail the makeup of the Code Authority Organisation, ruling that, ‘Each Code Member of the Subdivision shall be entitled to participate in the Code activities of such committee as shall be designated by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce… Each Code Member of the Subdivision shall contribute his equitable and proportionate share toward defraying the expenses incurred in the administration of this Supplement. Such equitable and proportionate share shall be determined by the Subdivision Authority under the supervision of the Chamber and subject to the approval of the Administrator.’ Tel: +353 (0)91 523800/ Mobile: +353 (0)87 1303166 or email: enquiries@ oldeireland.ie
