Through our own personal experience we received the inspiration to set up Treasured Keepsakes, to give people a wide variety of options upon a loved one’s passing should they choose to keep a lock of hair, cremated remains, a piece of jewellery, a photograph or anything that is a personal reminder of their loved one in a small keepsake, keepsake pendant or urn. Funeral directors we are currently working with have tailored our service to suit their needs. We have two options of how our service can work for you. If you wish you can buy our products from us at a wholesale price and sell them directly to your clients. Alternatively we can offer this service to your clients directly. We would hope that by recommending our service we will enhance and add value to your business at no extra cost to you.

Funeral Times is organising its first Trade Show to be held at Citywest Hotel & Conference Centre, Saggart, Co. Dublin on 1st and 2nd October 2013. This is the latest step in the publishing company’s drive to expand its services to the funeral trade in Ireland. The objective is to organise an event that brings the industry together at a time of continuing and accelerating change. As the industry in Ireland is facing unprecedented regulatory issues both at home and at European level including health & safety, repatriation, coroners removals and taxi regulations it is important that funeral directors and related service providers participate in the discussion and organise themselves to address the issues in the best and most efficient way possible. The professional bodies IAFD, NAFD, BIE, SAIF and PEAI are doing a magnificent job in bringing the industry and its members through the maze of legislation and regulation coming down the tracks. They make representation to the various authorities on behalf of members and they inform them through their education and service excellence programmes. We hope that the Trade Show will play its part in these times of change. Our aim is to make it the showcase for the industry on the island. We want to create the best environment where suppliers and their customers - present and future meet to do business. During the Show we will be organising guest speakers and seminars - many of an educational nature - which we believe will attract a large and wide audience. The Citywest venue is very accessible with excellent facilities and great offers for an overnight stay. So put the date in your diary now and we hope to see you at the Show!

Bereavement Pins By: Mourningcross
B
Not just a pin, an outward expression of Grief and Mourning.
ecause people didn’t identify with the name Mourningcross, we have now changed to Bereavement pin. Feedback from our directors has confirmed that when presenting them to families, there is a better understanding of what they are, and why they are needed. We have now updated our website to reflect this change. Thank you to our Directors who now present them to families as Bereavement pins. We have also learned that people like to wear the pins as an outward expression of their mourning after the wake and funeral until the month’s mind and at the anniversary mass. Some people choose to wear them all the time in remembrance of their loved one. The Difference between Grieving and Mourning Dr Don Eisenhauer an American Pastor and Counselor to families suffering bereavement in his book, Coaching at End of Life explains the difference between Grief and Mourning as follows: “Grief is what one feels on the inside after a
loved one has died. It is the composite of thoughts and feelings about the loss that is experienced internally with an individual. Mourning is the outward expression of that grief. It is the external and visible expression of what is experienced on the inside.”
Dr Eisenhauer believes Mourningcross Bereavement pins are important: “Bereavement Pins are a powerful tool for families. They are an outward symbol of the family member’s grief. They let visitors know that they are immediate family who are mourning, they connect people, and when worn after the funeral they serve that same purpose of expressing that they have lost a loved one. They say, “I hurt, and I could use some support.” What a wonderful way to make others aware of their need! By offering bereavement pins to families, funeral directors are providing added value to the service they provide in helping families on the journey through the mourning process.

IAFD News
A letter from the President Dear Colleagues,
I sincerely hope everyone is coping well with the ever changing weather conditions, let’s hope we are rewarded with a hot summer so that we can finally hang up our heavy overcoats and discard the black gloves! The first few months of my presidency have been very busy, I have received many phonecalls and emails from members and other organizations, for this I am thankful, as it confirms to me how the IAFD is relied upon as an association. I would like to comment on some of the enquiries the Board and I are dealing with on a day to day basis. Coroner’s Removals: Our position paper has been compiled and is currently being reviewed by our legal advisor. We plan to meet with Coroners Service of Ireland by the end of May, after which the Board intends to enter into discussions with City and County Councils. This will be a long and arduous task, I ask you to be patient during this period, you have my assurance that I will keep you updated regarding developments. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my colleague Seamas Griffin for his hard work and dedication in respect of this very important project. Education: The 2013 course began on February 14th. I would like to wish the following candidates every success in their studies: l Stuart Collier, Wicklow. l John Kennedy, Dublin. l Paula Townley-Crosbie, Louth. l Andrew MaGuire, Dublin. l Peter MaGuire, Dublin. l Anthony McCarthy, Cork.

Michael Smith, Bangor. Maureen Clarke, Dublin. l Donal Tierney, Tipperary. l Pat Keller, Nenagh. l Dermot Toolan, Meath. l Colm Kieran, Cavan. The CFP course would not be the success it is without the hard work of the education committee and the support they have received from past candidates, tutors, members and other stakeholder groups. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the generous and continuing financial support we receive from Glasnevin Trust enabling the education committee to further develop and enhance the CFP course. We plan to start another course in September, due to the large volume of interest anyone who wishes to start in September should complete an application form and forward to me before the end of June. - Application forms are available for download on our website: www.iafd.ie l l
Corporate Plan: We held our first Regional Meeting in Sligo; I would like to thank the membership for the warm welcome the Board and I received and their active participation during the meeting. A concise version of the Corporate Plan and Scorecard was distributed and I was pleased with the positive response. We will continue to present this document at forthcoming regional meetings and I would encourage feedback regarding this significant development. The document is also available for download from the members section of our website. Regulation Development Committee: Following establishment of the committee at
the Annual General Meeting in November 2012, the first full meeting took place on 10 January 2013. During the meeting it became obvious that there are various issues around regulation. In the coming weeks members will receive a survey from the RDC seeking your opinions, I ask you to take five minutes to complete this survey; it is your opportunity to have your opinion heard. You will be informed of the outcome after all results have been collaborated. Taxi Regulator: In January you would have received communication from us to adhere to the new regulations introduced by the taxi regulator. The Board and I are fully aware of your concerns and I would like to reaffirm our promise to you that your concerns are being portrayed to the taxi regulator and we are in regular contact with them. The following communication was received from Hugh Creegan:
Seamus, Thanks for your email. Over compliance in the taxi sector with the driver notification is about 83% and growing daily. Given that not all vehicles are being operated at any time, and therefore doesn’t need a notification while inactive, the actual percentage of notified taxis actively operating is somewhat higher than this. In the limousine section, the level of compliance is lower and we do want to see that improved. On the issues that people were having about
using our registration portal and smartphone apps, I think many of the remaining issues are down to older versions of software where our portal link doesn’t work correctly. For instance some people using early ipads who hadn’t downloaded subsequent Apple upgrades had problems and, indeed, would have had similar problems using other newer applications. These issues were resolved by just updating their software to the current version of Apple or whatever system they were using. Overall, the number of people raising issues with us in operating the systems is very low. Hope that information is of assistance. Regards,
Hugh
Hugh Creegan - Director of Transport Investment and Taxi Regulation In conclusion, I want to remind you all to regularly check the members section of our website, www.iafd.ie, as well as our classified section, there are new projects in the pipeline that will be available to you all. I have no doubt these will prove beneficial to you and your business. I look forward to meeting as many members as possible at forthcoming regional meetings. Kind Regards,
Joanne

The Other Side of the Table: The Value of the Viewing
By Travis L. Carrico
I
n August of 2008, I lost my 9-year-old son, Jace, to a brain tumor. The pain and the physical heartache were, and continue to be, indescribable. After 14 years of serving families and guiding them through the funeralization process, this moment in my life brought me to the “other side” of the arrangements table. I entrusted my son’s arrangements to Brent Ouellette, a good friend and trusted colleague with whom I had served my internship and, for a few fleeting moments, I was able to step outside of my situation and see with great clarity the benefits of this process from a completely different perspective. Even on “the other side of the table,” I, as a funeral director, took the grim opportunity of writing my own son’s obituary, a task that I found to be surprisingly therapeutic and even somewhat cathartic. Brent’s calm and guiding presence (reminiscent of my own style) took me through the other aspects of funeral arrangements such as the casket selection, service participants and procedures, and the myriad of little details that we as funeral service professionals know are critical to the success of a funeral. Through this entire time of planning, however, I feared one particular part of the funeralization process that lay ahead: the first viewing. All too often, I had seen families walk up to the casket that contained the body of their loved one who had passed away suddenly or much too soon. I had seen firsthand the weakness in their legs as they tried to confront the reality of their loss and heard the uninhibited cries of anguish as they were
Your customers your profits 20 | FuneralTimes
unable to keep their emotions in check. In the back of my mind, I knew this fate awaited my family and me. On the day of the viewing, my mind continued to return to those images of families I had served. How would I hold up under these circumstances? Would I be of comfort to my wife or would I myself be the one in need? As we drove up to the church, I felt certain that I was going to be sick. The feeling intensified with each step we took inside the building. Brent instructed us to wait just a moment as he made a few final preparations, just as I had done hundreds of times myself. It was during these few minutes,
I entrusted my son’s arrangements to Brent Ouellette, a good friend and trusted colleague which seemed an eternity, that I caught a glimpse of my son’s casket. The anxiety and nervousness were absolutely unbearable. As my wife and I walked in, I prepared myself for a complete physical and mental breakdown. Then the strangest thing happened… nothing. I saw my son lying in his casket, dressed in his yellow “Wiggles” shirt with his favourite blanket,
and, as closely as I can remember, I smiled. Jace looked absolutely perfect and, as I’d heard so many times in my career, looked like he was sleeping. The colour of his skin and freckles, his hair, and his expression were all so natural and flawless that I could do nothing but smile at his beautiful face. I felt a strange calm and peace come over me and distinctly remember thinking, “I really should be bawling my eyes out,” but the tears did not come at that time. Was I confronted with the reality of my son’s death? Absolutely. But his perfect appearance most certainly softened this blow. For a few moments, I was confused at my reaction to seeing my son in his casket, but my experience with families who had felt that similar peace soon told me that I, too, was benefiting from a very positive viewing experience. As funeral directors, we have all read about and seen firsthand the value that viewing the deceased holds for family and friends. We have been taught that it is a critical step in the grieving and healing process. It wasn’t until my experience on “the other side of the table,” however, that I truly understood the tremendous value of what we as funeral service professionals do on a daily basis and the powerful impact it has on those families we serve. I owe an
irredeemable debt of gratitude to my friend and colleague, Brent. Through his skill, caring, and commitment to his work, he showed me the undeniable value of what we do in an extraordinary and enduring way. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my funeral service colleagues for the work you do. I hope my experience may encourage you in some way as you continue to powerfully impact the lives of those you serve

T
he SAIF AGM and Banquet weekend held over the weekend of 22nd to 24th March at the Forest of Arden, was a great success with a full programme of business and entertainment. On Friday the Associate and Past President Lunch started the weekend off well, giving everyone the opportunity to catch-up as the weather started to decline and the snow slowly fell, stopping the golfers of the weekend enjoying the fabulous Forest of Arden Golf Course. This was followed by the inspiring and entertaining presentation from Laurence Winmill. Saturday evening Banquet was clearly enjoyed by all as the dance floor remained full all evening and, despite the lead singer of the band having a broken foot and tonsillitis, nothing deterred him from entertaining the happy crowd.

P
lans are advancing nicely for the 2013 National Funeral Exhibition, Stoneleigh on 7th, 8th and 9th June. This years traditional circus theme ensures that there will be plenty of fun and entertainment to go along with the serious business in what promises to be the ‘greatest show on earth’. As always, the NFE will be a weekend of fantastic products, information and entertainment! After the 2011 show, which has been hailed as the most successful funeral exhibition ever held in the UK, plans are now well advanced for the 2013 Exhibition. This year the organisers are theming the show around the traditional Circus,
providing exhibitors with an excellent opportunity to develop some exciting ideas for stand design. The NFE Big Top Bar will incorporate circus style entertainment, which will have extra attractions on Family Day. A funeral is of course, a very solemn occasion, but the industry exhibition is where you can meet friends, see all that is new and above all enjoy yourself. The 2011 exhibition had over 200 exhibitors, up 14% on 2009 and an increased visitor attendance of 10%. The NFE is the funeral industry's showcase for products and services from both home and overseas and includes an incredible variety of funeral related companies from hearse manufacturers to floral suppliers.

The NAFD’s “Green Form” campaign continues
T
he National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) continues to receive correspondence from members identifying NHS hospitals that are demanding sight of the “Green Form” before allowing a funeral director to collect a deceased person from their mortuary. NAFD Chief Executive Alan Slater and Nigel Lymn Rose, the NAFD’s representative on legislative matters, met the new Public Health Minister, Anna Soubry MP, on 7 March to update the minister on the “Green Form” issue and the distress the delays were having on the bereaved at an already difficult time. Ms Soubry offered to seek guidance from officials in the Department of Health as to the legality of hospitals demanding sight of the “Green Form”. This issue was also raised at the meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Funerals and Bereavement Group in the UK Parliament on 11 March, when the NAFD provided a list of NHS hospitals (identified by NAFD members) that were demanding sight of the “Green Form”. The Group was concerned to hear that problems
were still continuing, particularly as the Chair - together with Alan Slater and Nigel Lymn Rose - had met with the then Health Minister, Anne Milton MP, in July 2012 to discuss this very issue. As a result of that meeting an article was published in The Week in November 2012 - a communication from the Department of Health to NHS hospital Chief Executives - to remind them that the “Green Form” was not a legal requirement for the release of bodies. Alan Slater stated: “The NAFD is now seeking confirmation from the Department of Health that demanding sight of the “Green Form” is unlawful. If this is the case, we will ask the Department of Health to make NHS hospitals aware of this. Hopefully, this will then bring an end to this issue.” The Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Funerals and Bereavement Group, Lorely Burt MP, also agreed to write to Anna Soubry MP on behalf of the Group to reiterate the need to resolve this issue and end the distress caused to the bereaved.
NAFD Qualifications: quality in context
T
he National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) qualifications programme is growing from strength to strength; with a new online Funeral Awareness Course added at the end of last year to the National Certificate in Funeral Arranging and Administration and NAFD Diploma in Funeral Directing. To ensure that the qualifications support NAFD members in achieving outstanding levels of professional and personal development, the courses are regularly monitored and reviewed, with the work of students, approved tutors and examiners assessed independently for quality assurance and quality control at the request of the association’s external partners including North Warwickshire and Hinckley College

(NWHC), East Midlands Centre for Excellence in Teacher Training (EMCETT) and Birmingham City University. Underpinning each of the NAFD qualifications is a secure documented management system which consists of relevant policies - defined, specific and measurable criteria for learning and a set of guiding principles and handbooks. The NAFD education team prides itself on being able to demonstrate management and accountability, designated responsibilities and an implementation and monitoring plan for tracking of each part of the process for student registrations, tutor delivery, student progress and ongoing assessment. They are able to determine the level of
competence, experience and training necessary starting from students who register on the courses, through to approved NAFD tutors involved in delivery of the qualifications and assessment of student coursework, including the team of examiners responsible for conducting final assessments. Their aim is to ensure all are technically knowledgeable, with appropriate skills to fulfil and excel in each of their roles. To register for NAFD qualifications please visit www.nafdqualifications.org.uk. For anyone who has previously achieved the

NAFD and All-Party Group act to squash proposed mortuary charges
T
he NAFD and the All-Party Parliamentary Funerals and Bereavement Group (APPG) in the UK Parliament have successfully halted an attempt by Birmingham City Council to introduce a charge for the release of bodies from Birmingham Central Mortuary. The NAFD made representations about the charges to Birmingham City Council and Helen Grant MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice at the end of last year. Following these representations, the Council put the implementation of the charge on hold. The Chair of the APPG, Lorely Burt MP, also raised concerns about the charges Lorely Burt MP, Chair of the All Party Group with Ministry of Justice Minister Helen charges with Birmingham City Council and they Grant MP. NAFD launches PR Support Pack and secures Public Relations resource for members
T
he reputation of the funeral profession is being tested as, perhaps, never before and 2012 was a particularly challenging year. As the Voice of the Profession and the largest trade association for the funeral sector, the NAFD is committed to supporting members in growing their businesses and responding to key challenges such as these. The NAFD is in the process of selecting a PR agency to support the Association in redressing the balance of debate about the funeral industry and ensure that the many positive stories and aspects of the sector are covered. It will also be tasked with addressing unwarranted negative coverage. In a unique move for the industry, the NAFD has also commissioned a PR Support Pack, to be launched in April, that is designed to support NAFD members in communicating effectively with their important audiences, delivering the profile they need and helping to promote and protect the industry’s collective reputation at this challenging time. The pack covers aspects of PR, ranging from how to write press releases that the media will want to cover, how to communicate in a crisis and how to set up and manage a presence on social media. Said Alan Slater, NAFD Chief Executive Officer: “As the Voice of the Profession the NAFD has a commitment to promoting and protecting the
reputation of the industry and we have made significant inroads with the support of our National Public Relations Officer, Dominic Maguire, to whom we are extremely grateful for his time and commitment. “The time has come to put some additional support in place. The newly appointed agency will have a remit to ensure there is a balanced debate about the funeral services sector, to address issues and seek positive, proactive opportunities, and I look forward to sharing its work with members. “However, every member can also develop their own reputation for the benefit of their business and the new PR Support Pack provides a straightforward toolkit for them to do just that. “The pack is aimed principally at the NAFD’s smaller, independent members who are less likely to have either in-house PR resources or external PR agencies to draw support from. However, there may be ideas and opportunities in this guide that all members can potentially benefit from, or adapt, and so we hope all NAFD members will find it useful.” Copies of the support pack will be available from the NAFD in April in both hard copy and CD format.
The NAFD’s social media presence growing in strength
T
he recently-launched NAFD Social Media Channels are quickly growing in strength with both members and non-members of the association, observers of the funeral service sector and members of the public adding themselves on a daily basis to the list of NAFD followers on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Questions for the Modern Embalmer 1) WHY DO WE EMBALM? Embalming is primarily done to disinfect and preserve the remains and every embalmer is expected to know that. Disinfection is important for all who will be in contact with the remains, and also for the public safety in cases where the remains will be repatriated. Secondly, it has been a tradition in Ireland to have a period of visitation of the remains. At a wake friends and family gather to view the remains and pay tribute to the deceased. We gather to console the family on their loss, and to express sympathy to them. Without embalming, most remains become unfit for viewing within a short time. Progressive chemical and physical changes take place within the remains rendering looks and other qualities that people are accustomed to seeing. Embalming works as a temporary hindrance to this, thereby giving us the time needed to pay respect and express our sympathies. 2) HAVE YOU RECENTLY ASSESSED YOUR SKILLS IN EMBALMING? Embalmers are one of busiest workers in any given industry. Embalmers usually work unsociable hours. The work is unpredictable- one can be idle for days and weeks and the same can be working 24/7. But have you stopped and asked yourself, honestly, if you’re a good enough embalmer? You may say yes, but would you be able to tell yourself that you are a better embalmer than the guy across the road? So checking your skills against another can be a way of telling how good you are. But do you find yourself struggling during the procedure sometimes? Or do you end up just saying “Ah she should be alright, we’ll put lots of make-up and dim the lights and hope for the best” or “We’ll chance this one, we can always do a retouch”. If so, maybe it’s time for you to up-skill yourself. 3) IS YOUR FLUID DOING THE JOB? Generally all fluids are good in preserving and fixing the tissues, since this is what they are made for. But does your fluid give the results you want to get? Presentation is optimum when it comes to funerals. Expensive fleets of Mercedes, glass chandeliers and tall ceilings in the foyer, expensive suits and all the grandeur a funeral home can
give but what is the state of the remains in the coffin? Is it in the best state for presentation? We are now offered a lot of options when it comes to embalming fluids. DMG Chemicals offers a very versatile formulation of arterial fluid. Arterial Bond 24 has been used in over 1500 bodies since its initial formulation in the middle of last year and it has proven to be more effective than any other formaldehyde-based products out there in the market. Our customers say, ‘It does miracles!’ Arterial Bond 24 is tested to give brilliant preservative effects with medium fixation which gives the body a more natural appearance. It also effectively clears the ears from discolourations in any normal case. The same fluid, with a small change in the fluid proportions, has been tested to surpass the effects of most jaundice fluids available in the market. 4) WHAT ARE YOUR PRINCIPLES? Passion in what one does is vital for success and happiness in a chosen career. Understanding the value of your role as an embalmer can make a difference in how you approach and perform a procedure. The value of viewing the remains of the deceased is something that is not normally thought about by the general public. But again, its value is so important where anyone going through the process of grieving does not even have to speak about it. It is very important that we have full appreciation of the complex processes behind grieving and separation. It is these psychological processes on which the ethic of reverence for the dead is based and in turn demands for the necessity of funeral or embalming services. Without human attachments, the need for our funeral services would be of very little importance or may not even exist at all. This value can be felt by those whose lives are touched by such grief and so it can be explained. Being a professional you have to carry on the task of putting the value into the practice and making information available to whoever requires it. For support in embalming procedures, courses/ training, supplies and recent developments within the industry, you may contact the friendly staff of DJ MacNeice & Co. Ltd. at 01-8828731.

I informed the members of correspondences which had been received and reported that Funeral Times magazine are holding their first Trade Show at the Citywest Hotel, Saggart, Co. Dublin on 1 -2 October 2013. I am happy to give our support to the show and look forward to seeing our members at the event. As the Irish Division BIE had intended to hold a meeting in October and it was decided to move our meeting to Citywest Hotel in Dublin, supporting the event and the funeral profession and taking the opportunity to promote the BIE and its members. It is hoped that companies will showcase their embalming products, which will be informative and educational. I encourage all members to attend and offer our support to this event. On behalf of the members we thank Graham Brown, editor of Funeral Times and his team and wish them every success in producing this trade show for funeral professionals. During the meeting, and on behalf of the members, sympathy was expressed to Ernest Gibson on the passing of his wife Joyce, mother of Ivan Gibson and Gillian McFadden MBIE, motherin-law to Irene Gibson and James McFadden MBIE. In turn Ernest Gibson and all present members thanked the Irish Division for holding the meeting in Co. Donegal. Other news was that Ian Granger is retiring from his role as secretary of Anubis house this year and the committee and members of the Irish Division would like to thank him for his hard work and support over the years. We wish him every health and happiness in the future.

And as with all meetings, many topics were raised and this led to wide ranging discussions which I hope were enjoyed by all at the meeting. I would like to thank all who attended the meeting, in particular to our Acting Secretary Barbara Fowley who did an excellent job on the day. Before the meeting began I met with Thomas Mcginty MBIE and Frank Bradley Snr, funeral director and member of the IAFD who gave me an insight into the practices in Letterkenny which was very informative and interesting. Thanks to both gentlemen for their time. Congratulations to Anita Nugent who was presented with a certificate by National President Phil Hoggarth at our previous meeting in Shannon. We wish Anita every success in the future in her career. The Irish Division has also set up an email address irishdivisionbie@gmail.com which can by used to contact representatives of the Division. It is hoped that the next meeting will be held with the Northern Ireland Division, the venue will be confirmed to members later. It is hoped that this will facilitate members in the northern region once again. The Irish Division would like to remind members that National Conference takes place in the Radisson blu hotel Durham on the 19- 21 April. If there are any members who have any topics that they wish to cover for our next meeting, they can e-mail me on aidanwalsh05@eircom.net If members have any difficulty, do not hesitate to contact me. I would be delighted help out in any way.

A Growing Business, A Growing Tradition
stablished in the early 1990s, DJ MacNeice & Company Limited has forged a reputation as the leading supplier and manufacturer in the funeral business in Ireland. The company is operating in the Dublin Industrial Estate since 2000 up to the present. Since its establishment, the funeral industry has grown much in demand and in technology. The growing population and the industrialisation of almost all corners of Ireland became a major factor in these changes. Here in DJ MacNeice, we always strive hard to being prompt in responding to these demands and changes within the industry. Our satisfied clients are living testimonies of the quality of service that we offer. In 2008 David McGowan became the Chief Executive Director of DJ MacNeice. With his passion and deep knowledge of the funeral and embalming trade and practice here in Ireland and abroad, he dedicated himself in developing innovations that cater to health and safety requirements and standards of the Health and Safety Authority and also a master formulation of embalming fluids that is registered and authorised by the European Competent Authority- PRCD Ireland. Among our latest products are the: The Grave Shoring System, The Coffin Positioner, Arterial Bond 24, Cavity Bond and the Post-Mortem Powder. 52 | FuneralTimes
The Post-Mortem Powder is a ‘green formulation’ which is made from 100% recycled materials and it does not contain any formaldehyde or glutaraldehyde. It is very effective, safer for the embalmers and friendlier to the environment. A growing business is a good measure of success of any company. In the funeral industry, our work directly or indirectly affects the lives of families and communities in their most vulnerable times. It is therefore essential that business growth reflects the value of tradition. It should complement the changes in the traditions. DJ MacNeice always keeps its growing business in line with this growing tradition. DJ MacNeice, being a tradition itself, is staying strong and devoted to the funeral and business traditions. Our company’s objectives are formed upon the belief that ‘Funerals have always played an important part in everyday life, offering families and the community a chance to celebrate the deceased and give him or her ‘a good send-off’. So we keep our commitments into providing our customers the best of quality materials and products to enable them to provide the best service to families and their clients.

THE 7 HABITS OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE GRIEVERS
I
t gave me a whole new insight on the concept of “making the best of it”. Kyle learned six weeks before her wedding that her fiancé was cheating on her. When she found out about it, she called off the 180-guest wedding and the four-year relationship. She and her mother cancelled the band, the photographer and the florist, but they learned they would not be reimbursed for the reception and block of rooms they had reserved. So Kyle decided to turn her wouldbe reception into a charity benefit for the Children’s Aid Society and CARE, an international relief organization that aims to combat poverty by empowering women. They sent out invitations to 125 women for drinks and a gourmet four-course dinner. In exchange, they invited the guests to make donations to the charities. “I’m really just trying to turn it around and make something positive out of the situation,” said Kyle. We can all admire the resilience of someone like Kyle after a betrayal that must have seemed like one of life’s harshest blows. The loss of our hopes and dreams and of our expectations about the way things were supposed to be can be a devastating loss, a “little death” if you like. Whether it is a death or a betrayal, the sense of bereavement (which means being ‘ripped apart’) that emerges from such an experience can generate loneliness, fear, guilt, regret, rage, depression

and even despair. Stephen Covey wrote a wonderful book based on the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People“ which is a must read for everyone. With great respect to Dr Covey, who died tragically last year, may I deferentially suggest “Seven Habits of Highly Effective Grievers. “ Habit 1: Take your time. We define so many things on a timeline. “How long is it going to take?” is the common cry. Like kids in the back seat of a car, we constantly enquire, “Are we there yet?” Sadly there are many people who get frustrated with grieving people when they are not “there yet” after just a few months. But grief is not on a timeline. An illness can be understood in the context of time. You get sick, you feel rotten and miserable, you take your medicine, and you gradually get better. You get over it. But grief doesn’t work like that. It comes and goes. We re-experience it on birthdays, anniversaries, special days, as well as at all the reminders of how our life and our world has changed … and there are lots of those. Grief always seems to take longer than people who haven’t been through it seem to think. Those who overcome loss never go it alone because they know that going it alone is going nowhere. Nor do they pretend they are doing fine and not in need of support. Those who heal allow friends to reach out and help.
Habit 2: Give Yourself Permission to Grieve. Effective grievers disregard completely the erroneous advice to “keep a stiff upper lip,” “be brave,” “don’t cry,” “move on,” and all the other “fix it” sentiments. They refuse to be stoic. They allow themselves to grieve even though it means experiencing unpleasant and unfamiliar emotions, such as shock, disbelief, depression, anger, guilt, fear, loneliness, regret, anxiety, frustration and confusion. Effective grievers understand the importance of paying close attention to “grief work,” and allow themselves to go through it. It is the necessary psychological and spiritual energy you must expend to integrate the loss into the story of your life. It focuses on a simple question, Now What? Or to restate, “What do I do with the life I have left to live?” Or again, “How do I live meaningfully without that person and the relationship I have lost.” Habit 3: Seek information. For most people, the death of a loved one throws them into completely new territory. Very few individuals know much, if anything, about the grief process before they experience a loss. There are lots of people who THINK they know how others feel, but when it happens to YOU, with one of your own, it is DIFFERENT. A healthy bereavement is usually grounded in good and helpful information from books, articles or videos. One father writes: “After my 15 year old son died from cancer, I had to know more about grief because it had completely taken over my life. All of these new and upsetting emotions seemed to overwhelm me at times. So, I spent a lot of time in our local library researching out books on bereavement and grief recovery. I learned so much. The information I gleaned made my grief far less frightening. Today, my advice to others who are grieving is: Read all about it. Information is empowering.”
years died, she wrote the book Widowed. In that book she advised grievers: “If you can possibly avoid it – do not sell your house, do not move, do not make a major purchase, do not make a major change in your way of life. Put everything on hold for a year.” Good advice! The reason professionals advise the bereaved to avoid making major changes is because grief clouds the mind. Grieving people are in danger of making decisions based on emotion rather than sense, and later may regret the action that was made in the heat of the moment. After one year, many emotions begin to settle down, freeing the mind to think more clearly and make wiser decisions. Of course, there are times when financial or other considerations can force the bereaved to make decisions shortly after a loss. In that case, on a major decision like selling a house, buying a condo, investing the life insurance money, selling stocks, and so on, it is always good to seek the best advice possible from professionals as well as trusted friends and family. Habit 5: Join a grief support group. Rabbi Earl Grollman, an author and highly respected counselor on death and grief issues, explains the power of grief support groups in his book What Helped Me When My Loved One Died. “At some point you may be disappointed in the reactions of your acquaintances, maybe even your close friends. You just don’t hear from them so often anymore. They seem awkward and uneasy in your presence. They may avoid your company… That’s why selfhelp groups have been successful in providing necessary emotional intervention through the crisis of death. People in these groups understand your fears and frustrations; they have been there before. Allow them to help you out of your isolation with a meaningful support network… They share with you the time of your grief and help you to walk on your sorrowing paths. You are no longer alone.”
“How long is it going to take?” is the common cry
Habit 4: Avoid hasty decisions. When Dr. Joyce Brothers’ husband of over 30

Habit 6: Take care of yourself physically. Effective grievers seem to understand instinctively that a grieving body’s immune system is suppressed by the stress of bereavement and therefore susceptible to illness. For that reason, they work to take care of themselves physically by exercising, which reduces stress, strengthens the body and improves their overall sense of well-being. It also means trying to eat balanced meals, even when (and maybe especially when) you don’t feel like it. Fight the tendency to consume junk foods. Eat healthy food which will provide the body with the nourishment and energy it needs. Try to get adequate rest, even when sleep is difficult. Grief taxes both body and emotions, while rest regenerates body and spirit. Effective grievers stay away from drugs and alcohol. Numbing the pain of grief only postpones it. Occasionally, a mild sedative or anti-anxiety medication prescribed by a physician can help, but effective grievers never use them as a way to bury the pain. There is no pill to take away grief.

Habit 7: Seek professional help when necessary. Most people who lose a loved one to death might not need the aid of a professional therapist. There are times, however, when bereavement is so intense and so unrelenting, that the assistance of a skilled counselor will be most helpful in managing grief. This may be particularly true when the death has been traumatic, the result of an accident or violence, or where something about the situation or the relationship has complicated the process. Effective grievers know there is nothing wrong with obtaining help from a psychologist, a mental health clinic, a psychiatrist or a member of the clergy, or even from a community support group. Seeking professional aid is not an admission of weakness but a demonstration of your determination to successfully complete the journey through grief. People can and do heal from the grief of their loss. “Although the world is full of suffering, it is full also of overcoming of it,” observed Helen Keller. Many have experienced the deep wound of grief but emerged from it to live satisfying, fulfilling lives. Follow Dr Bill Webster’s “Thought for the Day” on Twitter @drbillwebster.

Help for African orphans is just a click away
Discarding sliced bread for a moment, it could be argued that the internet is man’s greatest invention since the wheel. Gillian Clarke plans to bring the power of the world wide web to the funeral industry The funeral profession has been among the slowest to embrace the world wide web, yet with a generation coming of age for whom the internet impacts on every aspect of their lives, it is inevitable that the industry will have to find a way in which to combine the personal service associated with the profession with the impersonality and power of the web. Co. Down business woman Gillian Clarke has launched a website which addresses the issue, while at the same time helping those less fortunate than ourselves. “Imagine a localised, easily-navigable source of information, listing services from every sector in existence, and you have imagined an online directory. Online directories help to promote a business and its offering to the billions of internet users worldwide. By being listed on a directory, funeral directors can be found by anyone who needs them, in just a couple of clicks”, said Gillian. Obituaries-ni.co.uk lists current death notices and funeral arrangements across Northern Ireland. The site aims to work alongside funeral directors and newspapers to keep it constantly updated. There is also a directory of all funeral directors, memorial masons, florists and solicitors, with contact details and location maps for the convenience of users. “We would encourage funeral directors to email notices immediately, to keep the website
up to date and a ‘step-ahead’ of the papers. The convenience and use of this facility to funeral directors costs less than £1.00 per day! One of the site’s major benefits to funeral directors is its ‘all day, every day’ updates, ensuring that all weekend and holiday notices are not missed”. Obituaries-ni.co.uk offers a direct link to JustGiving, which allows online donations to nominated charities to be made in lieu of flowers, when requested by families. The site has been listing funeral arrangements since mid February with the details currently edited to the name of deceased, date and funeral arrangements. Should funeral directors decide to advertise and make use of this facility, when their notices are emailed through, the full content of the main notice will go on the website including; donations in lieu and the address of the funeral director, hence advertising on the individual obituary, as well as on the online directory. One of the main aims of Obituaries-ni.co.uk is to financially support the St Catherine orphanage, which is in one of the biggest slums in Africa. Twenty-five orphans, aged between five and seventeen, live at the orphanage, which also houses a school. “We hope that through our website we can give these children a better start to life and a better education, and let them know that they are not unloved or forgotten,” said Gillian. When someone dies overseas
Death is always traumatic event for the family of the deceased, but when a death occurs abroad it adds an extra dimension with paperwork and logistics on top of foreign language issues and procedures adding to the stress. Steve Rowland, partner at Rowland Brothers International explains some of the problems be taking care of arrangements in resort and how long the complete process may take. It can be difficult to absorb so much information at such an emotional time, so we send a letter and leaflet about this and other important matters such as embalming, the coffin, flights, and documents to both the family and their funeral director. A set of original documents will accompany the deceased, but they are unlikely to be in English. They may need translating for local authorities who need them at home. The final death certificate may be issued later, but the cause of death may be found in the medical

When families suffer a bereavement abroad, the distance adds another dimension to a tragic situation. At home, we have some idea what to expect. Family, friends and information are close at hand. Abroad, procedures will be different, documents will be unfamiliar. The emotional and financial impact can be overwhelming. Funeral directors may be familiar with local and international protocols, but most families have never been in this situation before. They are not sure what to expect. In our first conversation with relatives, we try to reassure them by explaining what we do, the information we need, who will

Some countries issue an International Death certificate, with details in English, but unfortunately this does not record the cause of death. Although embalming may meet UK standards in some countries, there are other parts of the world where it does not. We must emphasise to families and their funeral directors that the presence of an embalming certificate among the documents unfortunately does not guarantee their loved one is in viewable condition. It is essential that families seek advice from
their funeral director, who can help them to make the right choice about viewing.Emotions are often stretched to the limit when a death occurs away from home, but our multi-lingual team can help. Tallon Mortuary Specialists are pleased to announce that they have been appointed sole distributors for Newaire Ozone Generators in Ireland. Manufactured in America, the Newaire Ozone Generator utilizes the power of ozone which is referred to as ‘nature’s own purifier. It has been used over the last century to purify water and eliminate odours in a wide range of applications. Ozone totally destroys the offending gases that are the source of everything we smell. Unlike many other deodourising methods, ozone actually searches out and destroys the problem gases. It will react with contaminates in the air, water, fabrics and on the surface of walls and ceilings.
“We are delighted with the Newaire system”, says Glyn Tallon, “It is a natural solution but hugely effective. Many businesses in Ireland have a problem with bad odours and we are confident that Newaire Ozone Generators will address the issue”. Indeed Newaire are so confident in their system that they are offering a 30 day money back guarantee! Ozone generators create ozone (03) which is dispersed into the air to attack and destroy odours at their source. After ozonating, premises are left with clean, health, fresh air. Ozone generators are particularly effective in eliminating odours from mould and mildew, cigarettes, smoke, food, pet/animal, paint, decay and body odours. Forty years of family heritage connects Liveseys and Coleman Milne
L
ivesey Funeral Services of Horwich, near Bolton has recently invested in a preowned hearse from trusted local specialists Coleman Milne Ltd. Their new Mercedes E Class Hearse is the latest in a series of funeral vehicles supplied by Coleman Milne to the family business, fostering a relationship which extends over many years. Tradition lies at the very heart of Livesey Funeral Services, located in Horwich near Bolton. Founded in 1848, the family owned and managed business has been nurtured by six generations and has long been a well-respected establishment serving the local community. The decision to choose Coleman Milne as the supplier stems from the consistently high quality customer service experienced by Liveseys over many years. Martyn Finch, of Liveseys Funeral Services said, “We are proud of the long tradition
we share working with Coleman Milne. We choose their vehicles because we believe they are the very best and the fact that Coleman Milne are another, long-established company means we share the same values. We particularly like the way they look after us in the same way we look after our own customers. Long may this association continue. Martyn is pictured outside his premises taking delivery of the new hearse from Graham Clow, Area Sales Manager of Coleman Milne, echoing the scene forty years earlier when his fatherin-law, Mr. Eric Livesey was pictured accepting the keys for his new Ford Zephyr Zodiac hearse outside the same premises in 1972. It just goes to show that while fashions may fade and technology relentlessly marches on, traditions such as brand loyalty and customer service not only continue but, reassuringly, endure.
Coleman Milne delivers again to William Purves
W
illiam Purves established his business in 1888 and the company remains one of the few family owned companies in the Edinburgh area and have now come to the fifth generation of the Purves family to join the business. The photo shows Tim Purves, of William Purves Funeral Directors Edinburgh, receiving his Silver Coleman Milne Hearses, based on the new Mercedes Benz 212 E-class. Coleman Milne would like to thank William Purves Funeral Directors once again, for their support over the years of Coleman Milne products.

Coleman Milne take a stand at NFE 2013 - no cars on show!
I
n a move that some will find surprising, Coleman Milne have confidently announced that although they will attend the 2013 NFE show with their usual flair and customary sense of celebration, this year they will not be bringing any vehicles along to the event. The logic behind this bold move is best explained by Sales and Marketing Director Geoff Hudson, “quite simply, we wanted to use our presence at NFE to strengthen our relationships with our valued customers, to really enjoy talking with them rather than pushing them with an industry hard-sell. This year Coleman Milne celebrates sixty years of brand excellence and we want to embrace the sense of occasion that this milestone presents. Coleman Milne’s enduring brand values embrace continuity and consistency and for many years we have eagerly looked forward to NFE, viewing it as the perfect platform from which we can communicate informally with our friends. This event always offers a brilliant opportunity to reinforce our heritage of exceptional customer service whilst keeping everyone updated with our latest developments. Our customers constantly tell us that it is our people as much as our products that makes them select Coleman Milne to be their supplier of choice. By leaving the
T
vehicles at home this year, we are looking forward to even more opportunities to really connect with our customers. Here’s to the next sixty years!” Following the success of their presence at the last NFE show, Coleman Milne once again will host the Heritage Café, complete with stylish Baristas and superb refreshments. Geoff Hudson remembers, “it was incredibly successful, primarily because it gave us the opportunity to really take some time and talk to our customers, to discover what they want from Coleman Milne and to find better ways to deliver those things. This year we are proud to be hosting the Heritage Café again and we can’t wait to welcome our friends to join us and our Barista for a coffee and to have a chat about what the future holds for our colleagues in the funeral sector”.
Cornish Family Funeral Directors invest in Coleman Milne Mercedes Fleet
. C. Rogers & Son are a fourth generation independent family firm, which have been for over 100 years in Padstow, Cornwall. Terry & Martin Rogers are proud to announce the arrival of the latest editions to their immaculate fleet of vehicles to complement their purpose built chapel of rest. They have taken delivery of a matching pair of Coleman Milne Mercedes “ Elegance” Hearse & Limousine to meet the growing demand for their services throughout the North Cornwall area. Martin says “We pride ourselves on providing a first class service to everyone we
serve, and it is therefore only right that we continue to invest in high quality vehicles as a commitment to the families we care for and strive to provide maximum comfort and support on the day “. They believe that this is the first Coleman Milne model Mercedes hearse of its kind in Cornwall to be owned by an independent family firm. After much consideration & always owning Coleman Milne Ford Cardinals & Dorchesters, the decision was made to change to diesels. The Mercedes have been well received on their funerals and with the funeral directors to whom they also hire. FuneralTimes | 71

offinsie Eco Density Fibreboard is an environmentally friendly way of using timber. It is produced from quick growing pine woodlands which are regularly replenished and take between fifteen and forty years to mature. Coffinsie Eco DF uses “leftovers” and waste from wood processing. It is economical and environmentally friendly. A piece of EDF is produced with high modern construction standards. It is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood or softwood waste residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a natural resin binder, and forming panels by applying high temperature and pressure. Driven by the spiralling costs of hardwoods and Eco needs, manufacturers have been engineering new and better ways to achieve a high quality finishing wrap covering over Eco DF board. The most common type of veneered Eco DF is achieved by using oak. This is a highly complex procedure which involves taking an extremely thin slice of hardwood (approx. 1-2mm thick) and then, through high pressure and stretching methods, they are wrapped around the profiled Eco DF boards. This is only possible with very Unpollished oak fibre board coffin with hand simple profiles because otherwise when the thin made wooden handles wood layer has dried out, it will break at the point previously believed, according to a leaked UN of bends and angle sheer study. Ireland – a funeral home on every corner Gus Nichols comments on the funeral industry
I
t cannot have escaped your notice that new funeral homes and offices are opening at every turn throughout Ireland. It is not as if we are poorly served by funeral directors in this country. Just look at the numbers – there are approximately 600 firms, sole traders and partnerships providing funeral services in the Republic of Ireland. Our death rate is currently 28,000 per year, with a marginal increase expected in the coming decade. Mathematics will tell you that the cake is very finely cut. In Dublin, with a death rate of approximately 7,400 in the city and county in the most recent years, there are over 35 companies in active competition and now well over 60 funeral homes and offices for the public to choose from. Very recently, in a Dublin suburb, a new firm commenced operation and conducted a funeral service from its premises, contravening planning laws on more than one occasion. As a funeral operator that has been directed by planners to provide a minimum number of car-park spaces, wheelchair car-parking spaces and comply with a myriad of logical and sensible planning restrictions, then it is galling to see other companies try it the old fashioned ‘back-door / retention” route. This is Ireland of old and such behaviour should not be rewarded. Please, please Mr. and Mrs. Legislator, if you are not prepared to regulate and licence funeral service, then at least see that our planning laws are obeyed and that there is a level playing pitch for all. Let us acknowledge the huge capital expenditure that compliant firms have invested

in providing the facilities that meet planning regulations. One hazards’ a guess that all this market activity is a function of the mistaken believe that funeral service is a high profit-margin activity. We all know it is not. We all have stories, anecdotal or otherwise of soaring bad-debts, ineffective banking assistance and a reduced spend on funerals across the board. Add in the significant increase in the number of families who wish to have the person reposing at home – then one has to question the logic of yet more funeral homes opening. It is a kin to the quite numerous attempts from property developers to turn green-field sites into cemeteries around the periphery of Dublin. When one does the maths, it really does not stack up – even in the very long term. Out of the 7,400 deaths per year in Dublin, less than 1,000 of those funerals will require a new grave. There are approximately 10 burial grounds providing new grave space around Dublin – a high degree of competition. Factor in the current financial difficulties so many people are in, the choice of buying a new grave in Dublin is beyond them – it is simply too expensive. Speaking of new funeral homes, may I congratulate Robin, Michael and all at Cunninghams on the very recent opening of their new premises in Blanchardstown Village. I have been told that the building is of exceptional quality and I look forward to getting a chance to visit it soon. On a personal note, our own company, J & C
Nichols, Ltd, celebrates its 200th birthday next year and we have decided to produce a book on the history of the company. The firm was well known for having a variety of Rolls Royces, Daimlers and other prestigious marques, many of which were sold on to other firms throughout the country over the years. If you have any old photographs that you think
could be of any of our old fleet, I would be delighted to hear from you (01-6770665). We hope to have the book ready for the official birthday – 16th June, 2014 (Bloomsday) in Dublin. This date is significant as the company is mentioned in James Joyces’ Ulysses, at the beginning of the Lotus Eaters Chapter, as Leopold Bloom walks around Dublin.

A family tradition continues in the heart of Blanchardstown The Cunningham family have been funeral directors in Dublin, Kildare and Meath for over 100 years. Now in their fourth generation, this family business has expanded to include a beautiful new funeral home in the heart of Blanchardstown village. Situated in the old presbytery on Church Avenue, the Edwardian red-bricked cottage has been sympathetically restored by brothers Ian, Robin, Michael and Andrew Cunningham. An extension to the rear is flooded with natural light and includes beautiful stonework. A state of the art two-way web-cam facility in the chapel means that families can be connected, even when they are thousands of miles apart. Minister Joan Burton and Deputy Mayor of Fingal Cllr. Peggy Hamill were proud to officially open the building on behalf of the Cunningham family. The Cunninghams received acclaim from the Minister for the sensitive restoration of the building and the tranquil space they had created for families in mourning. Dep. Mayor Cllr Peggy Hamill was delighted to meet some of the fourth generation of Cunninghams coming into the family business. Eadaoin, Ashling and Zoe Cunningham have grown up as part of the business and already demonstrate the empathy and compassion of the generations that precede them. V. Rev. Fr. Cyril Mangan of St. Brigid’s Parish, Blanchardstown, later led a multidenominational blessing of the new funeral home with friends, neighbours and colleagues of the Cunningham family in attendance. The design team were highly praised for both their vision and skill in the beautiful restoration of

the period building. As with all Cunninghams Funeral Homes, Cunninghams Funeral Home in Blanchardstown will be available for use (subject to availability) by visiting Funeral Directors. Managing Director Robin Cunningham concluded the opening by saying “Our family have served the people of Dublin, Meath and Kildare for over 100 years. My grandfather started the business in the family home in Clonsilla. My father and his brother followed in his footsteps and Michael and I have continued the tradition. And we are delighted that our niece Eadaoin is the first in the next generation to join us. Gradual and careful expansion means that we are now present in Clonsilla, Lucan, Celbridge, Lexilip and Blanchardstown and we are proud to continue to serve our local communities.

Order of Service For the average client, an average Order of Service is fine. They won't notice the average layout, the average typography, the average printing or the average presentation.
But many funeral directors are taking the opportunity to offer a superior service - a service which some families are pleased to purchase. The Order of Service is a chance to create a lasting memorial of the funeral service. Something for families to treasure which will remind them in future years of the hymns and readings, of the celebrant and the funeral director who was so helpful and who went the extra mile to help. A superior Order of Service will not cost significantly more than producing a basic product in your own office. While there is a cost for design and delivery, our professional printing machine is significantly cheaper per copy than the typical office ink jet. Dozens of funeral directors all over Ireland find our service economical enough to keep using us over the years. They appreciate how important it is to have a quality Order of Service handed out to every person who attends the church. A quality product that positively enhances the brand - and wouldn't you prefer people to remember that your service is better than average?
