Obituary
John 0' Farrell, Midleton, Co. Cork
6th August 1929 - 10th February 2013
J
ohn 0' Farrell was a very popular figure in the community and a well respected funeral director for over 50 years. A member of I.A.F.D., John regularly attended I.A.F.D meetings. He carried out funerals to a very high standard and always with great dignity and respect. John was an auctioneer for 57 years and a member of the I.A.V.I. He thoroughly enjoyed the challenges and rewards of the auctioneering business. John enjoyed his interaction with the public
on the street on a daily basis, sharing anecdotes and somehow always extracting little snippets of information which were of interest to him. His family would like to thank the I.A.F.D for their vote of sympathy on his recent passing. To our many colleagues in the funeral business who attended in such large numbers, sent mass cards and letters of sympathy or telephoned, a sincere word of thanks to you all. We greatly appreciate the high esteem in which you hold his memory. May He Rest In Peace
Your Local Undertaker A tribute to John O’Farrell
By local historian Dick Cashman His face is sad and tells the tale of sorrow and regret. His suit and hat are coloured black, his business deals in death. His hands are joined, showing knuckles white, his rosary in his fist. A comfort to the family- for one who's sadly missed. He's present in the funeral home, as mourners sympathise. When friends and family bid farewell, with heart felt tears and sighs. A watchful eye keeps on the door, the approaching priest to see, who'll say the final Requiem after the Rosary. It's a job that must be done, and he's frequently asked to do. For death it is no stranger, when life ebbs it is true. "The Great Call" cannot be ignored, when summoned by the maker. And some day at the pearly gates, you'll see your Local Undertaker. FuneralTimes | 5

The FROM50 funeral plan, a better pre paid proposition for you and your families? We believe so...
I
am sure that every funeral director that reads this article will be acutely aware of the concept of Funeral Planning, precisely why it is as important for not only future business growth but also for the benefit of the families served by that business. So why should you waste your time reading about this all new pre paid product? The FROM50 funeral plan is so different to ANY other plan available to the general public because it provides a range of benefits, both to the Funeral Director and the plan holder that are not available from any other pre paid product in the United Kingdom. It is unique, groundbreaking and this is why you should take the time to look at this product with a fresh pair of eyes and make your own informed decision. The FROM50 funeral plan was devised by Golden Leaves to be the first of its kind! It was designed to allow an individual who wanted a funeral plan to select one and pay for it like a life insurance. With zero deposit upfront and low monthly payments that will never increase during their lifetime, ever. But unlike all funeral insurances, it allows the purchaser to specify the funeral service required and to concrete the costs relevant to today’s prices. It is cheaper than other over50’s products on the marketplace too with regards to the monthly premiums, which makes it massively better value for the same services and covers the purchaser on average 1.5 years faster than the competition. It sounds almost good to
be true doesn’t it! Well, add to that the fact that if you pay more in to the plan than the plan pays out and your next of kin or estate will be eligible for a rebate to some if not all of the overpayment amount and you will see what all the fuss is about. For your Funeral Director business, unlike all insurances – you can actually offer this product to your families for a healthy commission that doesn’t affect the final payout to you at need. The plan is indexed to rise at 3.25% every year and the disbursement contribution of £1000, is precisely that, a contribution – so any risk with regards to third party expenses is mitigated. It is cheaper than other 50+ plans, yet the Funeral director will receive a higher payout on maturity than we believe is provided by anyone else. If you would like to talk to us about offering this groundbreaking plan to the families and communities you serve – call us on freephone 800 85 44 48 and ask for details - or enquire online on www.from50funeralplans.com

Glyn brings specialist skills to European School of Embalming J
uly 2013 launched “The European School of Embalming Skills” in Namur University, Belgium. A group of 12 students attended a 5 day intensive study programme, which encompassed theoretical and practical tuition on fundamental embalming skills and specialised reconstructive skills when dealing with extensive trauma and focused primarily on the ethos of “open-casket viewing”. The founders of the European School of Embalming are Mr Phillipe Dubresson and Mr Alain Koninckx, both qualified Embalmers who have a steadfast commitment to the death care profession. Students were also given the opportunity to participate with “hands-on” tuition on a medical cadavar with simulated injuries similar to those sustained in a road traffic accident and other traumatic injuries. The specialist reconstructive skills tuition within the course was delivered by Mr Glyn Tallon (Tallon Mortuary Specialists, Navan, Co. Meath). The programme of learning proved to be a great success, witnessing outstanding professional development amongst students
Glyn Tallon demonstrating injuries on a prosthetic skull and a determination to deliver one hundred percent commitment and dedication to the families they are called upon to serve within the field of specialist embalming practice.

Genelyn - a breakthrough in modern embalming technology
G
enelyn products are simple to use. The difference between them and other embalming fluids is that Genelyn products are not volatile, fumes are greatly reduced hence exposure levels are lower, making the operator’s working environment safer and much more pleasant. As in all other embalming fluids there are inbuilt pH stabilising compounds as well as chelating agents, and anticoagulant properties that ease the flow of fluids throughout the body. The penetrating agents assure thoroughness of tissue saturation and aid in the removal of post mortem discolouration giving a good embalming result. However, due to a new breakthrough in technology Genelyn fluids do not turn bodies grey. One thing that will not be achieved from Genelyn is rigidity of the tissues so the embalmer will find that the remains stay quite
pliable but will be preserved. To an embalmer this will take time to accept. In tuition we have always been taught that when a body is embalmed we not only see the change in colour but a hardening of the tissue. With Genelyn the colour will become stronger over the following 24 hours after injection and in fact the body will look better with time. The direct route to worldwide repatriation
epatriation is becoming increasingly common for funeral directors in Ireland. Once seen as a rare occurrence and only an issue for Dublin firms, the world is now a different place with every town in the country having people who originate from overseas. While some foreign born families will be happy for their loved ones to be buried in Ireland, among first generation immigrants at least, many wish to be laid to rest in their native soil. Repatriation can be a complex and expensive business and most funeral directors find it cost effective to use the services of a specialist company who have developed an expertise and found the most efficient means of shipping bodies around the world. Aerly Bird Trans Global, a Dublin based firm, have built a reputation for reliability which gives funeral directors confidence in offering the service to their clients. Pat Dillon and Dan Moriarity provide a worldwide repatriation service of human remains
and ashes on scheduled airlines. “We always focus on providing a respectful and caring service”, says Pat, “It is important to find the most direct route with the least number of transit points. We always choose the direct flight option when it is available”. The firm have built contacts and relationships throughout the industry and can offer significant savings on IATA/TACT rates. “Many airlines have specific requirements and we are able to ensure that funeral directors get the best possible prices and don’t run into any problems”, says Pat. Funeral directors will get the chance to see what Aerly Bird have to offer at the Funeral Times Trade Show at Citywest on 1st and 2nd October when everyone is invited to visit their stand. Letter to the editor
I
read David Burn’s article on the NFE and would like to address some of the points he made. Firstly, any review has to be subjective, but from the feedback we’ve had the vast majority of comments have been very positive. Our marketing campaign was raised significantly for 2013. We’ve had a lot of success with our internet newspage, but we also advertised in Funeral Times and all the major trade magazines. Our own FDM, which caters for the vast majority of funeral directors in the UK, has show news articles every month and other magazines do extensive previews. Every pre-registered visitor and every one who attended the show in 2011 was sent information with an entrance badge before the exhibition. I doubt we could have done much more to get the message across. Heading the article “Where were the Italian coffins?” seemed rather strange as David readily admits that the Italian style is not one of the biggest interests in the UK. I certainly saw quite a few dotted around the show on various stands, but we didn’t have an Italian delegation this year. I totally accept his comment about stone, but I don’t think that has much to do with the Nuremberg exhibition. We would very much like to see more stone suppliers and I know that those who do attend get very good
results. Its an issue we are working on and we are talking to a number of parties to improve things for 2015. Historically, the British show has tended to be unfairly typecast as the Coffin and Cars exhibition, and some people might rate its success on the number of limousines and hearses displayed. A couple of the manufacturers decided this year to reduce the size of their stands but all the majors were present and had good results. As for coffins, some companies prefer to show every four years rather than every two. It’s a commercial decision for them and it’s their choice. I don’t think the question of price can be seen as an issue. Of course there are some companies who can’t afford to attend, but NFE stand costs are relatively low compared to many major trade exhibitions. Exhibitors can chose a small area but they still get all the same benefits as the larger companies. The continued increase in exhibitor numbers, show on show, would seem to prove we’ve got things about right. I’ll make one last point, which is a little tongue in cheek. David questions the involvement of funeral directors with pet memorials, but his own company sells a very nice range of pet coffins. David Hyde, Show Organiser, NFE

Fanagan’s acquire invoice for Parnell’s funeral expenses
A
lan Fanagan, a director of Fanagan’s funeral directors in Aungier Street, has acquired the invoice and receipt, issued by the company, for the funeral of Charles Stewart Parnell in 1891. The undertakers organised the funeral of Parnell – the Home Rule campaigner and “Uncrowned King of Ireland” – one of the biggest funerals ever held in Ireland. An invoice and a receipt issued by Fanagan’s Funeral Establishment, which appear to show that Parnell’s Irish Parliamentary Party
haggled over his funeral expenses, were among the lots at an auction held at Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers’ sale in Dublin in July. Alan Fanagan said afterwards he was “very pleased” and that the documents would now be framed and hung in the company boardroom. Fanagans has been operating for almost 200 years. The family-run business, founded in 1819, is still going strong with the fifth, sixth and seventh generations of Fanagans now involved. FuneralTimes | 25

NAFD News Green Willow Funerals backs NAFD’s Gift Aid 25 campaign T
he funeral business may be one of the oldest professions in the world but new technology means the industry can still evolve in order to deliver an even better service to clients at a time when they are dealing with loss. Families of the bereaved often ask for charitable donations instead of flowers as a way of giving back to a specific community or charity. Asking for donations is a very personal choice and a way for people to thank charities which may have played an important part in their loved one’s life, or support an organisation to find a cure for the illness which took their life. But it also creates challenges for funeral firms as handling donations can be time consuming and leave them open to liability if donations are lost. The cost of processing cash and cheque donations to funeral businesses can also be huge. Research undertaken by the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) shows that collecting charitable donations currently costs the average funeral firm around £2,000 a year in overheads. In addition, charities often lose out as cash donations are usually not eligible for Gift Aid, a 25% Government tax incentive on donations. Now the NAFD has come together with JustGiving, Memory Giving, Friends and Relations and EMS Internet to launch GiftAid 25 a campaign to capture the estimated £25 million in uncollected Gift Aid, by helping funeral directors to move their donations process online. One of the first to back the campaign is Liz Bettles of Green Willow Funerals based in Wales. Liz believes moving funeral donations
online helps her to offer her clients a better service than before. She commented: “We are completely behind GiftAid25. Moving donations online has been hugely effective for us. It saves a huge amount of administration time spent counting the money and working out which funeral it relates to. For a small team like ours this is invaluable. At Green Willow Funerals we’ve seen an increasing number of clients who want to give donations in lieu of flowers.” The success of the adoption to online donations is reflected in the value of the donations since changing the way in which donations were processed by Green Willow Funerals. By making the process of claiming Gift Aid donations much simpler, the local community has benefitted. So far, by using online donations, Green Willow Funerals has raised over £20,000 for local and national charities, including a local hospice. Nearly £5,000 of this was added-in Gift Aid, at no extra cost. As part of the service, a personalised JustGiving page can be set up for each funeral and a link provided to the page on the funeral director’s website for a month after the event. Liz Bettles continued: “Moving donations online means our clients have peace of mind that more money is going to their chosen charity, and they can easily share the page with family and friends. Nobody has to worry about collecting or handling large sums of cash donations and the page can stay active for as long as our client wishes.” To find out more about how your business can offer an online donation service as part of the funeral package and GiftAid 25, visit www.giftaid25.com.

NAFD Parliamentary Update Below is a snapshot of the parliamentary liaison work undertaken by The NAFD on behalf of its’ members.
Coroner Reform I
n July The National Association of Funeral Directors welcomed the Government’s response to the consultation ‘Implementing the Coroner Reforms in Part 1 of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009’. The paper had sought views on the plans for implementation of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, including new Coroner rules and regulations and new statutory guidance for bereaved families. After consideration of the consultation responses it received, the Government has made a number of minor changes to its approach. With regards to the draft regulation which states that a body should normally be released within 30 days, the regulation has been amended slightly to put the emphasis on release of the body “as soon as reasonably practicable”. Furthermore, the Coroner is required to notify the deceased’s next of kin or personal representative if the body cannot be released within 28 days. Whilst the NAFD welcomes this amended approach, it believes the Government should have reduced the 30 day limit. The priority must always be the bereaved and, without a reason and explanation from the Coroner, routine retention of a body beyond seven days would be deemed unacceptable by the families involved. This was an issue which the NAFD highlighted in its consultation response. Alan Slater, Chief Executive Officer of the National Association of Funeral Directors, stated: “The topic of Coroner reforms has received a great deal of attention over the last few years from Parliamentarians and interest groups alike. The NAFD has been vocal on the subject, particularly on the role of Chief Coroner, at both Ministerial meetings and through engagement with UK Parliamentarians and Welsh Assembly Members. We will monitor the reforms when they come
into effect and raise any issues that NAFD members encounter.” The Government plans to review the impact of implementation 18 months after the Coroner reform provisions come into effect, which was expected to be 25 July. The Government’s response document can be accessed via the Ministry of Justice website.
Social Fund Report
T
he Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) published its annual Social Fund Report for 2012-2013 at the end of June. The report provided statistics on the number of applications received and number of awards for the Social Fund funeral payment. These figures showed that funeral payments awarded were worth a total of £43 million in 20122013. Out of the 66,000 applications that the DWP received, only 35,000 were successful. The full report can be downloaded from the DWP website.
Scotland update T
he Scottish Cross Party Parliamentary Group for the Funeral and Bereavement Service in the Scottish Parliament met on 26 June. Bob Doris MSP attended along with Raymond Pratt, one of his constituents, who gave a short presentation on the work of the charity Death Abroad - You're Not Alone (DAYNA), whose aim is to offer help and support to those who have lost loved ones abroad. The funeral directors present at the meeting answered a number of questions that Mr Pratt raised and welcomed ongoing contact if future questions arose. Mr Doris is an SNP regional MSP for Glasgow, and Deputy Convenor of the Health and Sport Committee. The Group also discussed issues relating to death certification, the work of the Infant Cremation Commission, funeral poverty and the Social Fund funeral payment. FuneralTimes | 27

NAFD News Hot wheels! The National Association of Funeral Directors and Lorely Burt mp welcome sweltering cyclists on 1,000 mile charity ride
T
he National Association of Funeral Directors and Solihull MP Lorely Burt are pictured giving a warm welcome – plus a £250 cheque and plenty of ice cold water – on a baking hot day to three sweltering cyclists from national insurance brokers SEIB. The trio arrived at the NAFD’s National Office in Solihull mid-way through a ten day, 1,000 mile ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End in aid of CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity. The cyclists are Andy Davies, Steve Elsey and new bike convert Jon Leland. They visited the NAFD on Day 6 of their quest, having covered almost 700 miles in the hottest weather the UK has seen for seven years. To date they have raised more than £4,500 for CLIC Sargent. Their fundraising tally was boosted by the £250 donation by the NAFD on behalf of its members which was given to the cyclists by Solihull MP, Lorely Burt, who is also chair of the All Party Group for Funerals and Bereavement in Westminster. Simon Fisher, President of the NAFD, was pleased to be able to offer the team respite from the saddle for such a worthy cause. “SEIB are close colleagues of the NAFD and we’re delighted to support them with this contribution to such an important fundraising campaign, not to mention buckets of ice cold water and fresh fruit to keep
their stamina up for the onward journey to Cornwall.” Lorely Burt MP added: “Cycling the length of the country is a tough challenge, but doing it in such hot weather is above and beyond. I would like to congratulate the three guys in what they are doing to raise funds for children with cancer.” Andy Davies, whose 6 year old son, Aston, was diagnosed with suspected leukaemia and spent some time at the Royal Marsden hospital undergoing tests, said: “We were looking to do something special to mark SEIB’s 50th anniversary in business and this seemed the perfect challenge. When we were being looked after by the Royal Marsden two years ago we met some fantastic families and staff and I wanted to give something back to them.” The team spent the night in the borough before continuing their journey first thing the following morning, bound for Bristol. They are aiming to raise a total of £10,000.

The Cillin By Mattie Lennon
P
art of the ritual, going home from Lacken School, had been, for generations of children, to run down the top of the ditch at “Rid’s Green” or the “Clorenáán” as the old people called it. We learned, in later years, that it was, in fact, a “Cillin” where unbaptised babies were buried, usually under cover of darkness. According to the National Monuments Trust there are about 1,400 such burial-places in the country, some dating back to 700 AD. My friend the poet P.J. Kennedy wrote a poem titled, ”Buried Unknownst” about such places; I stared at a crowd of stones In the corner of a hilly field. Like children away from home The stones seemed put about. Some grouped, some alone, Some leaned, some low with the damp. All dressed in moss With a trim of grass.` The ones in the ring of rushes, like a set dance. Brown heads at the back, noisy. Black heads jostled at the far side. The blonde near the buachalán bui. The stone with a crown of fossils, I saw his curly hair. Brothers holding hands,
They were the eldest and the youngest, So the neighbours said. Twins shared their scarcities, A granny said,”There’s nothing to be ashamed of. They were laid out in silk The size of a handkerchief. The lone stone, shy, Minded the child that came unknownst. Unknown stones with dimples That could hold a thimbleful of tears. Wisps of cocksfoot grass shelter them all, A bandage of briars against the hill Keeps livestock away. OILEÁN NA Marbh (the island of the dead) off the coast of County Donegal is one such Cillen where, there are a reputed 500 unbaptised children buried. The island is accessible by foot twice a day at low tide. In a radio interview local man Seamus Peter Doyle said, “ . . . Ye’ll find the wee heights and hollows in it.” Seamus went on to say that some people didn’t want to know about it, ” . . . want to forget about it more or less.” As one writer put it, “Even the coldest heart will feel for women around Ireland who were enjoined to grieve silently as their babies were taken away at night for burial beside a

concern for the past two thousand years but did anybody stop to think about the worry caused by the belief in the other Limbo? It is hard to imagine the distress of the parents and family of an infant who died without Baptism who believed that the soul of their loved one was in such a place. Church authorities eventually copped on and the concept was dropped from the official catechism in 1992. In 2004 Pope John Paul II appointed a commission to study limbo, and in 2007 it issued its findings. Signed by Pope Benedict XVI, the report stated that it reflected a "restrictive view of salvation" and that it is reasonable to hope that the souls of unbaptised infants are admitted to heaven by a merciful God. So, the Cillin in your area is a reminder of our unenlightened past, of what Brendan Graham author of that haunting song, Crucán na bPáiste, called “other darker days.” But it is also a monument to centuries of heartbreak. Thank God we live in an age of more progressive thought.

cemetery wall, or for the disconsolate father who had to walk across to Oileán na Marbh at low tide to lay his child to rest.” A Cork man, Pat O ‘Neill, recalled how as an eight-year old he had witnessed four men burying a baby in a Cillin and how it affected him, adding, “Can you imagine what that mother went through?” According to Roman Catholic theology, Limbo was an afterlife realm between heaven and hell where there is no punishment but where souls are denied the presence of God. As far as I know it wasn’t An Article of Faith (It wasn’t a Mortal sin not to believe in it) but it was taught in the Catechism. It wasn’t mentioned in the Bible but in the Middle Ages, one or more Theologians came up with the idea that there were, more or less, two Limbos. One held souls of Old Testament patriarchs who were liberated by Jesus after the Resurrection; the other contained the souls of babies who never were baptised and freed from original sin. The concept of the first caused little or no

80th Anniversary
offin & Casket manufacturer and funeral goods supply company Finlay celebrates three anniversaries this year when it marks its eightieth year in business and also the 30th anniversaries of Dermot Sharpe and Martin Carroll joining the company. The company which was founded in 1933 by Jack Finlay originally traded under the Ardee Coffin Works name and then in later years as Finlays of Ardee and more recently as Finlay. In 1958 Jack was joined in the business by his son Colman Snr and they were subsequently joined by Colman in 1989 and John in 1990. When spoken to recently Colman said; “We are very fortunate to be able to celebrate these milestones in our company’s history and I would like to pay tribute and say thank you to our customers, our staff and to our suppliers for their support over the years. When I joined the business I served time under and learned a great deal from both my Grandfather and my Father on all tasks from our sawmill through to customer deliveries, but I also learned and still continue to learn from other members of our team including Martin and Dermot, to whom I would like to pay a special tribute and to thank them for their superb contribution to our business. Today our directors are just one part of a dynamic team of employees who work hard to further develop our all island customer service in Coffin, Casket, Monumental, and non-coffin Funeral Products which is at the heart of what Finlay stands for”.

Seen here performing on stage in Sweden, Shay wowed the audience with his performance in the lead role of Mack Sennett in Gerry Herman's Mack & Mabel. The veteran stage performer who has appeared with many groups around Dublin was in Sweden with Rush Musical Society which was invited to Landskroner, near Malmo, as part of the town's 600th Anniversary celebrations in March.

Zooperman wasn’t ‘lion’ when he said he could do it! Superhero ‘Zooperman’ said goodbye to his fellow animals as he left Belfast Zoo. The superhero completed his challenge to spend five days in an enclosure, all in aid of Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. T
here was great excitement in Belfast Zoo as they received a new arrival. Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice superhero ‘Zooperman’ moved into an enclosure for five days in a bid to raise vital funds for the charity. Disguised as Finaghy Funeral Director David Capper, Zooperman is rarely seen in public despite being a strong supporter of Children’s Hospice. Prior to the superhero’s arrival, zoo staff prepared the enclosure with Zoo Curator, Julie Mansell explaining, “Belfast Zoo is home to 150 species of endangered and exotic animals but this is the first time that we have had a superhero staying with us! We wanted to recreate his natural habitat as much as possible in the enclosure so we added in his home comforts including blankets and chairs.
As with all of our animals, we ensure that their enclosures provide enrichment to keep them busy and entertained. We therefore provided some enrichment for Zooperman, including an arts easel and swing ball set!” Speaking about Zooperman’s challenge, Joanna Pawson, Fundraising Manager at Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice adds, “Zooperman moved into the zoo to raise as much money as possible for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. I’m appealing for the public to give him some support. As all donations go to Children’s Hospice, every pound will make a real difference.” Zooperman left Belfast Zoo on Sunday 11th August but is still seeking donations for Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice. To donate, text ‘GIVE £5’ to 70444 or visit www. justgiving.com/zoopermanchallenge. FuneralTimes | 45

For embalmers only! Every embalmer has his or her own way of doing things - from the preparation of the remains of the deceased up to the disinfection and tidying up of instruments and the mortuary. Just like any worker in any other industry, we have to adhere to general standards but we usually try to adapt our own styles and preferences. Embalmers can make or break the funeral. Padraic once told me about his conversation with his funeral director when they were building the funeral home, ‘You can do anything you want with your funeral home but the mortuary is mine and you’re not going to touch it. End of story.’ Most funeral directors rely greatly on their embalmers to do the job for them. So what do embalmers rely on? Embalmers have the knowledge. Most embalmers now have some form of formal instruction relating to the practice of modern embalming or hygienic treatment of the deceased. Embalmers study anatomy and physiology of the human body. It is also important for embalmers to know the decomposition process. Other important things that embalmers need to know are the common disease conditions that cause death, infectious diseases, chemicals and work safety and protective clothing and equipment to name a few. Embalmers have practical skills. Some embalmers in Ireland are self-taught or were trained in-house by a senior embalmer and some may have gained some form of formal skills training. But it is safe to say that all embalmers have the basic skills to perform the procedure. A few of the embalmers working in the funeral service sector are ‘naturally gifted’ and most of them have learned, polished and to some degree perfected their skills through personal experience and constant practice. Up-skilling and specialised courses are also available and helpful in refreshing existing knowledge and skills and in learning new developments or advancements in the funeral sector, especially the embalming practice. A common denominator for embalmers. Every embalmer has to work with embalming chemicals in order to carry out his or her task which is the sanitation and temporary preservation of human remains for the purpose of funeralisation. Two
of the most essential embalming products being used in the procedure are the arterial injection fluid and the cavity fluid. Choosing your arterial fluid. There are a good number of options available for embalmers at the moment. There are several factors that may contribute to how one determines his or her own fluid to be used - price, accessibility or availability of the products, resulting colour after injection, effectiveness, strength of fluid, or maybe just the brand name. Some big companies may dazzle you with over 100 products while there are small companies offering a slim line but widely versatile products. Embalmers are no doubt spoilt for choice! What you MUST know. The EU Biocides Regulation (BPR) will come into force on the 1st of September 2013. This regulation covers all member countries of the European Union. In Ireland, the National Competent Authority is the Pesticides Registration and Control Division (PRCD). PRCD is in charge of implementing the BPR. PRCD will be able to give anyone official informations regarding the BPR more than any private companies or institutions. So what is it to us embalmers? The issue of formaldehyde being unavailable in the market after September is completely false. Formaldehyde is still in review and until such review is complete, it is still available in the market. Important note: PRCD requires all chemicals to be registered with the agency before it can be made available in the market. In Ireland no other company has complied with this legal obligation except for DMG Chemicals. The unique PCS Numbers assigned to Arterial Bond 24 and Cavity Bond are printed at the bottom of the labels. When you need help overseas W
hen tragedies occur away from home, families instinctively turn to their local funeral director for help. Did you know that more than 50 countries maintain diplomatic missions in Dublin? Or that Ireland has more than 70 diplomatic missions of its own across the world? Yet when families receive tragic news about a death abroad, they are just as likely to call you, their local funeral director, for advice. We all hope that travel insurance will take care of the financial issues, but sadly this is not always the case. We know how desperate families can feel when they find either there is no travel insurance, or that cover has been declined. Now they need information about costs and alternatives, so they can make important decisions. They may need help with the local language, or translations of local documents, all of which we can provide. It’s all part of our international funeral & repatriation service. There is always a sense of urgency when bad news arrives, but we urge families to be thoughtful, as a hasty overseas appointment can be an expensive decision. Rowland Brothers International builds relationships with reliable agents and carriers around the
world so we can predict costs, and avoid financial surprises. Our experienced team will guide grieving families through unfamiliar local requirements, updating everyone as arrangements progress. We cannot change what has happened but we always hope to simplify the repatriation process as much as possible. We are open and honest, which occasionally means sharing unwelcome news about the condition of the deceased, or flight delays. Our commitment is to keep you informed about the repatriation, so you can focus on the family’s questions about the funeral. Trust, loyalty, and confidence are all good reasons for families to develop a bond with a particular funeral director over the years. As family funeral directors ourselves, we have developed such a bond with many families, as well as many funeral directors around the world. It is our privilege to develop such a bond with the community of Irish funeral directors. Please visit us to sign up for our 1873 Club, an email newsletter designed to share news and information with funeral directors nationwide. Whether we have worked together in the past, or if this is our first meeting, we look forward to seeing you at the Funeral Times Trade Show. FuneralTimes | 55

We look forward to meeting clients, both old and new, at the FUNERAL TIMES TRADE SHOW, DUBLIN 1-2 October 2013
Through our own personal experience we received the inspiration to set up Treasured Keepsakes, to give people a wide variety of options upon a loved one’s passing should they choose to keep a lock of hair, cremated remains, a piece of jewellery, a photograph or anything that is a personal reminder of their loved one in a small keepsake, keepsake pendant or urn. Funeral directors we are currently working with have tailored our service to suit their needs. We have two options of how our service can work for you. If you wish you can buy our products from us at a wholesale price and sell them directly to your clients. Alternatively we can offer this service to your clients directly. We would hope that by recommending our service we will enhance and add value to your business at no extra cost to you. Building treasured relationships T
reasured Keepsakes have just celebrated their fourth year in business. “Once again we have had a very fulfilling and successful year. The Treasured Keepsakes name has become very popular and widely used throughout the funeral industry. We have received very positive feedback from funeral directors and from families whom we have dealt with on their behalf. More and more of our business is coming from referrals from families we have dealt with. This is very pleasing for us as it is recognition of the quality of service we are providing” said Liza. Treasured Keepsakes is a small family company run by brother and sister Edward & Liza. They provide funeral directors and clients with keepsake pendants, various urns and small keepsakes. Liza explains how the service can work for you “Using Treasured Keepsakes means you never have to buy urns or keepsakes for stock but they are still readily available from a local Irish company. We will sell our products to you at a wholesale price for you to sell on to your clients. Alternatively we can meet your clients on your behalf and let them view a selection of our products, filling the items that they have chosen. You can refer your client to us safe in
the knowledge that they will be looked after in a professional and compassionate manner. Using our service will enhance your business by giving the choice of a wide selection of products to your clients but at no extra cost to you.” If you would like to view any of their products or would like to discuss how Treasured Keepsakes can deal directly with bereaved families on your behalf, please do not hesitate to contact them and they will be happy to discuss the options with you. Treasured Keepsakes will be taking a stand at the upcoming Funeral Times Trade Show in October to showcase all their products. They hope to meet funeral directors who have not already had the opportunity to view their products or discuss the services that they provide. They are also looking forward to meeting their existing clients who have supported them in their first four years of business. For more information on any of our products or on how Treasured Keepsakes can work along side your company contact Liza Webster or Edward Foley on Tel: 01 8254579. The dying art of stone masonry Gus Nichols comments on the funeral industry With a heavy heart I made the call to our client who had complained about a number of errors on her husband's headstone. This was not the first call of this type I have had to make recently. Very reasonably, she allowed us time to correct the mistake, at significant cost to ourselves, and with luck, the respect and trust the client has for our company has been retained. As someone said – “hey, at least it is not written in stone!” Oh. The madness in the final years of excess of the ‘Celtic Tiger’ led to strange happenings in the world of the Irish headstone business. I remember taking a call from a man who proudly told me that he had bought a container-load of Chinese headstones which were now sitting in a shed at Dublin Port and he wanted to know how to set up in the ‘headstone business’. He asked me if we were interested in buying the stock and I politely declined. I asked him what market research he had done before setting off to the East to make his fortune. “Not a lot really,” he replied “sure everyone knows there’s a killing to be made in this game…” Hmmm. I tried telling him that the market for new headstones was finite and restricted, with less than a 1,000 headstones required each year in the Dublin area, and that there were a number of very well established and reputable companies already competing for this market. This story, I am sure, was not an isolated one. From my position in this sector of funeral service (and I include masons, embalmers, coffin manufacturers, florists, suppliers and funeral directors as making up ‘funeral service’) the latter years have proved more and more
difficult to acquire the services of really capable stone-masons. They certainly exist, but they seem to becoming a bit like the Corncrake – occasional and unexpected sightings at certain times of the year. I’ll be writing letters into The Irish Times next. In this company we are asked to arrange renovations and repairs on numerous styles of older headstone types, with lead-filled lettering a common requirement. It seemed to me that for a time, the headstone business was more interested in selling pre-made imported headstones, using the computer to inscribe the lettering, erect it and move on to the next job, and that additional inscriptions, repairs and cleaning was nuisance. No-one was interested in it. It was not worth the hassle. It is probably related to the demise of Irish quarries. We are often asked to supply good quality Wicklow Granite and it is a frustration that it is increasingly hard to source natural, Irish sourced materials. Even the most ardent venture capitalist must have a hard time explaining why large rocks must be shipped around the planet. I am reminded of a story I was told by Mr Marc Poirier of the Magnus Poirier funeral company in Montreal. As well as being the

"I remain positive that headstone and memorial services will return to a more even keel – the skills of good masonry will always be needed" largest and most reputable funeral company in Quebec, they operate a number of very high quality cemeteries in the state. One of which is the Jewish Cemetery of Montreal. The Jewish community elders approached Marc as they wanted to upgrade much of the outdoor stone architecture around the cemetery such as gates, railings, flower planters, memorial plaques, etc. The new design was to have a common theme and would require a large and significant quantity of stone of a single type – I forget which. Marc contacted his local quarry, which happened to extract the exact stone type required and asked for a price. The figure was astronomical, so Marc contacted his Chinese suppliers seeking a price from them. The price, including delivery from China and taxes was
exactly half that of the local quarry 10 miles up the road. Marc telephoned his local quarry to see if they do any better, and they told him, “Marc, the only way we could beat that would be to ring up our guy in China as well!” I remain positive that headstone and memorial services will return to a more even keel – the skills of good masonry will always be needed – there is an ongoing demand out there. That said, one of the obvious impacts on our business from the recession is the cutting back of what people are prepared to spend on headstones – indeed many are postponing the decision to erect a memorial indefinitely. Perhaps Ireland is just becoming a bit like its old self, where erecting a headstone was seen as a luxury that could not be afforded by all. FuneralTimes | 61

Professional Embalmers Association of Ireland
NEWS A
fter the successful meeting in University College Cork, the Professional Embalmers Association of Ireland is going swiftly towards leading standards in the funeral service sector. The PEAI started with only four members in 2004. Less than 10 years since birth, we now have almost 100 members actively involved in raising standards of embalming in Ireland and even in parts of Europe. This is a remarkable growth that no other embalming association in Ireland has yet achieved. We have been engaging with government bodies regarding implementation of standards in the funeral service and the practice of embalming. The PEAI will be taking part in the The National Council for End of Life Care in Ireland Forum 2013 which will take place on 24th October 2013. Our contact details and direct link to the PEAI website may also be downloaded in the Citizens Information website under the useful contacts directory
(www.citizensinformation.ie). The PEAI will be supporting the first ever Funeral Trade Show by Funeral Times which will take place on October 1-2. We will be taking a unit through the courtesy of the Funeral Times. The educational session held every meeting for the members of the PEAI will this time be extended to all visitors and guests coming to the Funeral Times Trade Show. The PEAI will be sponsoring an hour of exciting and informative talks from a couple of government agencies that play relevant and crucial roles in the funeral practice. Also the DCA of Ireland will be giving an educational talk regarding ‘Caring for Grieving Families- Your Work and Your Health’. The PEAI Annual General Meeting will also be held in Citywest Dublin on October 2, 2013. We will be presenting certificates to new members who have recently qualified in professional embalming. Woodall Nicholson Group attracts new Investors
W
oodall Nicholson Group – one of the UK’s longest established coachbuilding businesses – has been acquired by new investors. Mosaic Private Equity, RooGreen Ventures LLP and Enterprise Ventures have each made a significant investment in the business, which has a turnover of £24m and employs 180 people at factories in Westhoughton and Rochdale. Woodall Nicholson, which incorporates Coleman Milne, Mellor Coachcraft and Mellor Vancraft manufactures and sells funeral vehicles, buses and specialist vehicles for the emergency services. Its history dates back to the 1820’s when its major activity was building horse-drawn hansom cabs and carriages. The deal brings with it a re-union of ‘old friends’, given that the principals and investors - Brian Davidson, Paul Newton, Mike Rogan, Jonathan Diggines and Warwick Ley all worked together on the very successful acquisition of Scarborough based Plaxton Coachbuilders in 2004. As part of the deal, Geoff Hudson, who has
been with the business for over 30 years and is currently Group Sales Director, becomes Managing Director, while his two colleagues and co-shareholders will retire from the business. Paul Newton, who along with Mike Rogan led the deal on behalf of Mosaic Private Equity said of the investment: “We have been tracking this business for some time now and as soon as the opportunity opened up we contacted Brian, given our friendship and positive experience with him in the sector. We are delighted to have brought together an innovative funding model and a high calibre team of managers and investors to complete the deal. This speaks volumes for the quality of the Woodall Nicholson business and reinforces our mantra that it’s not just the money, but the people that make the difference”. Brian Davidson of RooGreen Ventures LLP will become Chairman of the group, while Paul Newton and Mike Rogan of Mosaic Private Equity and Warwick Ley of RooGreen Ventures will join the Board as Non-Executive Directors. When asked to comment on the deal Brian said: FuneralTimes | 65

“This is a bit of a departure from my normal transactions in that we have invested in a business which is already performing extremely well and has been well managed. I am hopeful that we can make the business even better and use it as a launch pad to grow a larger scale automotive business”. Investment Director Wayne Thomas led the deal on behalf of Enterprise Ventures. Jonathan Diggines, Managing Director of Enterprise Ventures, said: “Enterprise Ventures is all about supporting business growth. We are delighted to be financing such an important North West manufacturing business, with a heritage dating back for almost two centuries and strong growth potential”. Also joining the management team, as Group Finance Director, is Dan Jackson, formerly Corporate Finance Partner at Langtons Chartered Accountants. The deal was supported by a finance package including senior debt and working capital facilities arranged by Paul Thomas and Steve Alcock at the company’s incumbent bankers, NatWest.

Modern alternative to traditional headstone F
rom the beginning of time, people have wanted to mark the burial places of their loved ones. From the magnificence of the Pyramids and Newgrange, through the simple beauty of Poulnabrone, right down to modern times all memorials have been made of stone. There was simply no other natural material that was as durable or permanent as stone, and because it could be cut and engraved, it was possible to record a burial as a signpost to future generations. However, stone being a natural material, is prone to erosion by the elements, even the strongest castles, which were designed to withstand cannon and gunpowder, eventually succumbed to rain. Stone is porous, rain will eventually penetrate and weaken it, algae will penetrate into the softened stone and grow there. This happens to headstones as well, that is why there are so many shabby and discoloured memorials in our cemeteries. Its an expensive job, having these sandblasted and relettered to restore them to their former glory. Traditionally marble has been used to decorate the most beautiful churches and palaces, retaining its beauty and finish for hundreds of years. However, that was all indoors, outside, when exposed to the elements, it eventually goes the way of all stone. Well now there is a material that will do everything stone does, and more, without any of the drawbacks. Traditional materials are gradually being replaced by newer man made materials because they are cheaper to produce, more durable, are light but strong, and require less maintenance. Just as uPVC was found to be an excellent alternative to wood in windows, Fibreglass Composite is the ideal alternative to stone headstones. A composite is a product comprising two separate materials, usually a Fibreglass Matting and an Epoxy, which when combined, results in a material with a very high strength
See us at the
Funeral Times Trade Show Ireland 2013 速
to weight ratio. In other words, it is very light but extremely strong. Over the past 40 years, fibreglass has replaced wood in the building of boats, big and small. Sitting in water all year round, exposed to all kinds of weather and still as good as when bought new. Fibreglass headstones have many advantages over stone: As these headstones are hollow, they are ideal for use in cremations. The internal cavity is sealed and weatherproof, thus making it an extremely suitable and economical alternative to an urn. Such a headstone/cremation urn can be placed anywhere, not necessarily in a graveyard, as a reminder of the deceased. These fibreglass headstones were designed with the intention of keeping funeral costs down, they look the same and do the same job in a more economical way, without any of the disadvantages of traditional stone headstones. This is the future, the stone age is over. Ring 0879782890 or log on to www.Fibreglassheadstones.com for more information.

The logical way to run a funeral directing business I
t is very important for Funeral Directors to think about their internal systems for administration and handling accounts. With an efficient and streamlined system in place, a professional image will be presented to the public and more time can be spent where it is most important – helping families when they need it most. One of the core ideas behind the Eulogica software is that every funeral is unique and every funeral director is unique. We have found that all funeral directors do things in their own way, be it the letters that are sent out or the services included in the funeral. The software is designed to be as flexible as possible so that any eventuality can be catered for. This is especially important for independent funeral directors because the way they do business is vital to their continuing success. If the software is not capable of working for them then they will not be getting the benefits of such a system. The system covers all aspects of the funeral, from the first call to handling the invoices and accounts. When a new funeral is being organised, the information is entered into the database – details of the deceased person, the client, the next of kin, etc. The different parts of the funeral are then entered as details are
See us at the
Funeral Times Trade Show Ireland 2013 ®
arranged – coffin choices, vehicles, minister details, etc. With the data in the system a wide variety of letters, forms and reports can be printed out without having to enter any details a second time. Eulogica was originally developed in the 1990s, for funeral directors in Norway. A concept of continuous maintenance and support led to widespread acceptance of the system across the country and the majority of all funerals in Norway are administered through the Eulogica system. Eulogica was established in the UK in 2003, with the software being launched in 2005. In 2008 the business expanded into Sweden. 2012 saw the expansion into Ireland and the Netherlands. Members of the Eulogica team will be demonstrating the Eulogica software at the Funeral Times Trade Show 2013, at the Citywest Hotel, Dublin.

Dr Bill Webster Busy bees stay smarter longer! A hive of research activity on bees has been creating a bit of a buzz lately. Professor Gro Amdam, a Norwegian researcher, has succeeded in reversing the aging process in the brains of bees, findings which she believes may bring hope to people with dementia. Her research discovered that the workings of bee’s brain cells are surprisingly similar to humans. So, hopefully, when she finds the secrets behind what makes a bee brain tick, that knowledge will apply to humans also. “No one really believes that the fountain of youth exists," says Professor Amdam. "We accept that as we age, our health and mental acuity will decline. But recent findings indicate that aging doesn't have to be synonymous with going downhill." In her research, Dr. Amdam studied the performance of older bees on learning and memory tests. Her subjects underwent a laboratory learning test in which they were challenged to combine an impression (a scent) with a reward, and to remember that relationship later. The results indicate that younger bees understood the relationship between “impression and reward” immediately, while older bees made the connection less quickly, and ones with symptoms similar to dementia either never understood the relationship or forget it immediately. "These bee problems are similar to what we see in older people, when both short-term memory and the ability to learn decline," said the professor.
Well, OK, I hear you say, but we all assume that aging causes us to become forgetful as the risk of dementia increases. What I find exciting is that further research on Amdam’s discoveries, if proven, will actually challenge that misconception. Scientists at Arizona State University have now discovered that by changing the social order of the bee community, new tasks have a positive effect on the bee’s behaviour. In a recent study published in Experimental Gerontology, a team of scientists showed that tricking older, foraging bees into doing social tasks INSIDE the nest caused changes in the molecular structure of their brains. It has been learned that when older honey bees take on nest responsibilities typically handled by much younger bees, that can effectively reverse brain aging. To elaborate, the division of labour among bees is that older bees collect food outside the hive, while younger bees tend to the larvae, or “baby bees”. The researchers noted that when the older bees were placed back in the nest to do the younger bees' tasks, half of them improved in their learning and memory abilities. Researchers already know that when bees stay in the nest and take care of larvae, they remain mentally competent for as long as they are there. However, after the bees flew out to gather food, they began aging very quickly. After just two weeks, foraging bees had worn wings, hairless bodies, and had lost brain function, basically measured as the ability to learn new things. Sound familiar??
76 | FuneralTimes
FT Issue 4 2013 Planned.indd 76
02/09/2013 15:17
The scientists wanted to see what would happen if the foraging bees returned to take care of larval babies again. They discovered that after 10 days, about 50 percent of the returning older bees caring for the nest and larvae had significantly improved their ability to learn new things. The team not only saw a recovery in the bees’ ability to learn, they discovered an actual change in their brains. When they analysed the brains of the bees that had improved versus those that did not improve, large differences were found in the levels of eight proteins involved in the growth, repair and maintenance of brain cells that can help protect against dementia. In the bees whose learning had improved, the levels of two of these proteins were twice as high as in the other bees. Bee brains with these high protein levels simply seemed better at repairing damage and ensuring that processes functioned as they should. What is of huge interest and excitement is that several of these proteins are also found in human brains. All of which leads researchers to claim that these findings suggest that social interventions like changing how people deal with their surroundings and situations are something that can help our brains stay younger and be used to slow or treat age-related dementia. "Research on older people shows that social stimulation can have positive effects on health and brain functioning," says Professor Amdam. "This is evidence of certain flexibility in the bee brain, and while more research into how to tap into this flexibility is required, it is conceivable that the brains of other animals and humans could have a similar potential. Now, some of you are wondering why a grief counsellor is writing at length about all this “Bee” nonsense. Actually I got quite excited when I first heard the report and read the findings. We all know how grief can affect us, physically, emotionally and mentally, and I have written extensively on these symptoms before. The question that most concerns counsellors and those who want to support grieving people is simple. What can we encourage the grieving person to DO that will help them make the grieving process a healthy, healing journey,
"how people deal with their surroundings and situations are something that can help our brains stay younger" rather than a destructive or debilitating deterioration. In the 1980’s, William Worden developed the “Tasks of Mourning.” While these are quite limited and general in their scope, in my opinion, they had several positive effects, the main one of which was to suggest that grief is an ACTIVE rather than a PASSIVE process. In other words, we have to DO something to effect the reorganization of our lives. Time doesn’t heal, it is what we DO with the time after the loss that determines our success or our getting stuck. So, while admitting that Bee research still needs to be developed before it can be applied to humans, it does lend credibility to something that I have felt for some time; namely that grief support cannot be simply emotional or psychological in nature. These aspects are important of course, especially in the early days after a loss, particularly where it has been traumatic in nature. But when we consider the ongoing journey, when the person has worked through the numbness, shock, and post-traumatic stress reactions, the question becomes NOW WHAT? Many people offer the reaction, “Well pull yourself together and get on with it. It’s been 3 months; you ought to be over it by now. Life must go on.” Such comments show a fundamental misunderstanding of what grieving people go through. To the comment, “Life must go on”, many respond “WHY?” Indeed until they have answered that question to their satisfaction, they can’t even think about the “HOW.” FuneralTimes | 77
FT Issue 4 2013 Planned.indd 77
02/09/2013 15:17
One of the initiatives the Grief Journey system advocates addresses the ongoing social needs of the grieving person. While counselling and support is important, as we have said, the person who is grieving struggles not just emotionally, but to discover how life can be meaningful after something that seems to make no sense, like the death of a loved one, occurs. Here is where local support programmes can play a crucial, yet sadly often overlooked role. Go back to Dr Amdam’s words: “By changing the social order of the bee community, new tasks had a positive effect on the bee’s behaviour.” Now read it again, changing the word BEE to GRIEVING PERSON. In other words, these findings suggest that social interventions like changing how people deal with their surroundings and encouraging social stimulation are something we can do today that will have positive effects on the recovery of grieving people. This doesn’t have to be rocket science, folks, or require professionally trained experts to facilitate. In my own programmes, a monthly
dinner for people to provide social interaction and friendship … a chance to talk to others of like mind, and yes even do something to look after someone else. A local group can form a committee to organize some social activities: a theatre night, a bus trip, a travel group, an evening of cards or games. Yes sir! There’s a whole HIVE of activity out there to get your brain cells buzzing again. Is this grief therapy? You bet your life it is! In fact it can sometimes be even more effective than professional interventions and therapy alone, especially when done in conjunction with a good community support programme. It is saying to grieving people, “Even though you have had an enormous loss, you still have a life. Here is both the HOW and the WHY you need to find ways to make the most of what you have left.” I would be more than happy to share the model I have developed in my own local support groups, and if you can effect such a programme in your community that alone would be the reward. As someone once wrote, “The true meaning of life is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to sit.”

f there is one thing that we have learned working in Mourningcross, it is the importance of supporting families who have laid to rest a deeply loved person. For everyone associated with the wake and funeral, it is time to go home to a familiar life. For the immediate family, it is the start of a new life without a very important person. We have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people who support grieving families through counseling, support groups and members of religious organisations. One lady who has herself experienced more loss than anyone should in such a short life, has used her understanding to help others who are going through that very dark tunnel. Her name is Angie Cartright and she is the founder of United States National Grief Awareness Day, which took place on the 30th August. Angie explains why she wants to help people. Any person who has had a loved one die often feels alone in their grief, like nobody understands

what they're going through. Experiencing a death can be overwhelming. People experiencing grief need support. And the first step in that support is for people to become more aware of what people are going through. We want to bring the myths, cliche, and stigma out of the dark and into the light. Grief Awareness Day is designed to help us all become more aware of the needs of grieving people and of the benefits that they obtain through the support of others. Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness of the painful impact of the death of a loved one. We will be providing new audios, videos and online training as part of Grief Awareness Day and be hosting a yearly conference as a community event. http://www. griefawarenessday.com/ We are delighted to support the first year of the National Grief Awareness day and very privileged that so many people find the bereavement pins a comfort on their journey through grief.
Bereavement Pins The easy way to help people identify all of the immediate family members with whom to sympathise and worn as an outward expression of grief after the wake and funeral.

Purveyors of Vintage Carriages V
intage Hearse Hire are based in Co. Armagh and offer a fully restored 1939 Austin 20 vintage hearse which can be used for any occasion. The car has been used for funerals, funeral home openings, trade exhibitions and has appeared in several TV programmes. The vehicle has been painstakingly restored to its former glory with a few modifications to accommodate today’s expectations. The coachworks are by Aurthur Mulliner of Northampton and are in the form of an enclosed funeral coach limousine, wellproportioned and trimmed out with oak and brass. The front interior is black leather embossed with a leaf motif bench seat, and the rear is a beautifully designed division in the form of two sliding glass panels effectively making the driver’s compartment somewhat unique. French oak is used on all surfaces including a complete ceiling lining and runner boards. The vehicle is regularly serviced and is valeted
