Networking Building Business Relationships Through

A Recap of May and June Events in Devon and Cornwall

In today’s fast-paced business world, building strong relationships with clients, partners, and other professionals is more important than ever. One of the most effective ways to do this is through networking events, which provide opportunities to meet new people, exchange ideas, and establish connections that can lead to long-term success.

Over the past few months, our team at Funky Media has been attending a variety of networking events across Devon and Cornwall, and we’ve been blown away by the positive impact they’ve had on our business. From a vineyard tour and wine tasting to business lunches and gatherings, we’ve found that each event has its own unique benefits and opportunities.

One of the key benefits of networking events is the chance to meet new people and expand your professional network. By attending events in your industry or related fields, you can connect with like-minded individuals who share your interests and goals. This can lead to new business opportunities, partnerships, and collaborations that can help you grow your business and achieve your goals

Each event has been a great opportunity to connect with other professionals, learn about new trends and technologies, and showcase our own services and expertise.

One of the highlights of our recent networking events has been the photo studio set up by our very own Hannah, who has been capturing some fantastic shots of attendees throughout the events. If you attended any of the events we’ve been to recently, be sure to check out the photos on our website and social media channels – you might just spot yourself!

We’ve found that attending networking events is an essential part of building strong business relationships and staying ahead in today’s competitive market. Vineyard Nature Trail Sandridge Barton’s free that’s fun for kids and great for adults too

Some of the greatest childhood memories are made when exploring outside, which is why Sandridge Barton’s free Vineyard Nature Trail looks sure to be top of parents’ bucket lists this year.

The trail starts from Sandridge Barton’s Visitor Centre at Lower Well Farm and is great fun for kids, and informative for adults too. It’s set in the countryside on the edge of the River Dart close to Stoke Gabriel in south Devon where an idyllic landscape of wildlife, trees, hedgerows, and woodland is also home to 32 acres of vineyards which produce grapes for Sandridge Barton Wines and the wellknown Sharpham Wine.

As children scurry about searching for wildlife, parents can learn why this rolling countryside is perfect for growing grapes. Fascinating interpretation boards offer insightful information on grapevines, while children are encouraged to see if they can spot any creepy crawlies and to try the half dozen brass rubbings, including grapes, fossils and cows, which are set in the vineyard.

“Perfect for families and dogs are welcome too”

Stonyfield is a unique site as it boasts South Devon’s only raised limestone bed, a key feature in some of the world’s best wine regions such as Burgundy, St-Émilion and parts of the Southern Rhone. It was planted in May 2021 and the first harvest of grapes is expected to take place in 2024.

The trail is 1.3  miles long and takes about 40 minutes to complete, and after there are refreshments to be enjoyed at Sandridge Barton, where a gorgeous outdoor area has plenty of space to sit and soak up this beautiful place.

Created with funding from South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the  trail starts at Sandridge Barton (Lower Well Farm, Waddeton Road, Stoke Gabriel, Devon, TQ9 6RL) where parking is free. Well-behaved dogs are welcomed.

If you’d like to try the brass rubbings, head to the visitor centre before starting your walk to collect paper and crayons.

Brittany Ferries Campaign

We have engaged with Brittany Ferries this year and partnered their campaign - The ‘England’s South Coast by Sea’. This project is a partnership led by Brittany Ferries working with 11 Destination Management Organisations (DMO’s) located along the south coast of England from Portsmouth in the east to Cornwall in the west. The aim is to rebuild awareness and drive consideration for travel to these regions of the Great Britain from France. In 2019, passenger traffic booked in Brittany Ferries’ French market for travel to Great Britain accounted for 16% of the overall group passenger numbers. By 2022 this figure had dropped to 6% partly due mainly to the requirement to have a passport in order to enter to the UK. France has one of the lowest proportions of passport per population head in Europe. Using paid media in the French market, this campaign is aimed at promoting the ports Brittany Ferries serves in the UK (Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth) to aid a recovery in passenger numbers in 2023 and beyond.

The Lupton Trust

Lupton is a charity that offers a place of hope for the individuals and communities it serves

Run by the community, for the community

34

BACKGROUND/HISTORY

The Lupton Trust was formed in 2009 by an enthusiastic and dedicated group of local people who had a natural desire to “make a difference” and breathe life back into rundown Lupton House and grounds and its surrounding community.

Lupton House is set in the heart of magnificent woodland. It is a Grade 2* listed building in need of huge TLC and a massive, extensive upgrade of basic services. Work has already become a key focus in the community for groups, colleges and the voluntary sector.

Initially with no paid staff and very little funds, over half of the rooms are now in use. Broken windows have been replaced, decades of mould have been cleaned from walls; ceilings and doors, elegant forgotten rooms have been lovingly restored.

The Lupton Community project is going from strength to strength. This old abandoned school has been brought back to life by the community for the local community.

The Lupton Trust now hosts a comprehensive selection of activities such as dance, art groups, complementary therapies, a forest school, community gardening and historical talks. This beautiful location is becoming a much sought-after venue for charity events/fundraising for good causes, conferences and seminars, as well as celebrations and weddings.

35 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

In 2013 Lupton Trust won “The Big Society” award The Prime Minister said:

“I am incredibly impressed by what this group has achieved. The Lupton Trust has inspired and empowered people, providing work experience for people suffering from mental illness, for disabled people, and for those looking for employment. It has built people’s confidence in their abilities and helped them to forge new social and business partnerships. The project has brought together a community that will leave a powerful and lasting legacy for future generations - it is an excellent example of the Big Society in action.”

The continued success is due to the dedicated volunteers who tirelessly do what needs to be done to keep this project in the community;

Special thanks go to 4 Seasons, the disabled gardeners who keep the paths clear, tend to the rose garden and grow plants to sell by the cafe.

The “muscle” came from the community service who attend at the weekend as part of their community payback hours; they pay back to the community by decorating, digging, building, and clearing up after events.

The traditional skills needed come from the retired volunteers who continually impart their wisdom, patience and enthusiasm whilst unconsciously, by example, teaching the younger generation about hard work.

The welcoming ethos of Lupton transforms people’s lives. It inspires creativity and purpose, friendship and hope, kindness and compassion, creating partnerships that will grow and are developing into very solid foundations.

In its short existence since 2008, Lupton Charitable Trust has truly brought together a community for today’s Torbay area that will leave a lasting legacy for future generations.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

Lupton is now a valued community asset built by the people for the people.

Lupton is located in the heart of Torbay which is primarily a tourist destination, Lupton remains the place where local people find peace and solace especially in the summer.

With ample free parking and wonderful woodland walks Lupton is favourable for dog walkers and people wanting to spend time in nature. The Coach House café is especially popular with carers and the elderly some who use the outdoor space to reflect on loved ones who are no longer with us.

Lupton is a growing Health and Wellbeing centre as people seek help and support whilst waiting for NHS treatments. More and more people are looking to spend time in nature and look after their health and wellbeing.

PILOT PROJECT

We have run three Pilot groups in the past twelve months.

One Adult group with a mix of self-referred and referred members focused on increasing physical activity and reducing social isolation.

One Adult group for members referred by social prescribers with issues around anxiety, loss, depression and social isolation

One Inter-Generational group mixing adults and pre-school children and helping them to work together developing social interaction and sharing skills and experience – and watching them design, build and test a see-saw together from reclaimed timber and logs was quite an experience!

Adults from all of these groups have become volunteers with Lupton trust after their groups finished.

FUNDING NEEDED

In order to continue to support and care for volunteers we need funds to employ a volunteer coordinator, this is especially for the older generation who have valuable skills to share and or special health requirements.

Lupton has an ancient orchard the older generation who volunteer on Wednesdays would like to make into a sensory happy remembrance garden. Many people have lost loved ones over the last few years, they would like to create a space where positive remembrance of loved ones can take place. We will need tools, plants, signs, and benches.

The outdoor seating in the café is unsuitable for the older generation who have trouble accessing the benches and prefer seats with back supports.

The existing outdoor furniture is reaching the end of its life, we need to purchase age appropriate outdoor furniture.

The increase in energy prices will put a strain on our current resources; we need funds to continue keep users warm.

100g Trewithen Dairy unsalted butter

110ml Trewithen Dairy whole milk

2tbsp Caster sugar

50ml Pen Sans Summer Cup

Garnish

Fresh strawberries

Mint leaves

Cucumber, sliced

Trewithen Dairy Cornish clotted cream

42 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

METHOD

Start with the scones. Preheat the oven to 190c. Grease and line two baking trays.

Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour to create fine breadcrumbs. Stream the milk in slowly, using a cold knife to gently mix until it just forms a dough. Wrap in cling film and chill for 20 minutes while you make the strawberry topping.

Place the frozen strawberries and a splash of water in a saucepan over a medium heat, allowing them to break down. At this point, add a measure of summer cup and caster sugar. Continue to stir for a couple of minutes until it has reduced down slightly. Remove from the heat and chill.

Back to the scones. On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to a thickness of 2cm and cut into rounds with a cutter. Don’t twist them out of the cutter, otherwise they will warp in the oven.

Place on the baking trays, before brushing the tops with the beaten egg. Bake for 12 minutes until slightly golden. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack.

To serve, smother with strawberry sauce, a generous spoonful of Cornish clotted cream and garnish with strawberries, cucumber and mint. Enjoy with a large jug of summer cup filled with summery botanicals. Heaven!

The epitome of summer flavours, Pen Sans Summer Cup is bursting with red berry aromas and pairs perfectly with our rich Cornish clotted cream. Make this easy no-churn ice-cream in advance so you have it ready to pull out of the freezer for hot days and al fresco dessert.

250ml Trewithen Dairy whole milk

200g Strawberries - frozen (defrosted) or fresh

1 tbsp Icing sugar

50ml Pen Sans Summer Cup

Garnish

Mint leaves

Strawberries

Orange slices

44 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

METHOD

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs until light and fluffy. While still whisking, add the caster sugar, one spoonful at a time and continue mixing for a few minutes. Add both creams and pour in the milk, while continuing to whisk.

Pour into a freezer-proof container (a loaf or baking tin works well) and freeze for two hours. Remove from the freezer, whisk thoroughly and return to the freezer.

In the meantime, place the strawberries and a splash of water in a small saucepan over a medium heat and cook until the strawberries break down into a sauce. Add the icing sugar and Pen Sans Summer Cup. Allow to simmer for a few minutes until the mixture reduces slightly. Set aside too cool.

Stir the strawberry sauce through the semifrozen ice cream and, using a cocktail stick, pull it gently through to create a beautiful marbling effect. Add the remaining strawberries on top and return to the freezer until frozen - approximately one hour later. When you’re ready to serve, remove from the freezer and add fresh strawberries, mint and orange slices to garnish. Enjoy in cones or bowls.

We want to shine a spotlight on Cornwall Pride and all the amazing work they’ve been doing over the past 16 years. They’ve truly been a shining beacon of visibility and awareness for the LGBTQ+ and marginalised communities across Cornwall. But you know what? They’re not stopping there!

Cornwall Pride understands that while visibility is important, it’s going to take a whole lot more to make our duchy an even better place for LGBTQ+ and marginalised people to grow up, live, and work in. That’s why they’re launching Community Pride, a fantastic initiative that brings together communities in pride across 10 towns and the city of Cornwall. How awesome is that?

With the support of their amazing community, volunteers, partners, supporters, and funders, Cornwall Pride is all about sharing their values and making a positive impact. They’ve even launched a suicide prevention and mental wellbeing support group called Penguin Soup. How cool is that name? Through this exciting handover of care from Truro Rangers to Cornwall Pride, they’re now the official custodians of the Pride Tree. This means they can continue supporting creative workshops that connect our community to this sustainable awareness and support project.

47 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

If you’re interested in getting involved, you should definitely check out their website at www.cornwallpride.org/support/penguinsoup. They’ve got some amazing face-to-face community engagement events lined up, along with a mental health hub and community media to provide much-needed bespoke community peer-to-peer support. They also offer one-toone mental health support, crisis management, and signposting. Trust us, this work is absolutely vital for our community.

Did you know that half of LGBTQ+ people (that’s 52%!) experienced depression in the last year? And almost half of trans people have thought about taking their own life at some point in their lifetime. Penguin Soup is a project that

gently brings people together, aiming to reduce isolation and the impact of mental ill health in the queer community. It’s truly incredible what Cornwall Pride is doing to support and uplift our community.

So, come on and join the movement! Let’s support Cornwall Pride as they continue to make a difference in our beautiful Cornwall. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Stick ‘n’ Stitch Design is a Plymouth-based business that started with one small idea and has grown to a company that hits target month after month! We are family-run, with a strong priority on customer service in order to create long-lasting loyalty and repetitive sales with our customers. The friendships that we create with our customers are developed through strong ideals which include fast, efficient communication; friendly staff, high quality garments and quick problem-solving abilities, all to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.

We like to make certain that our orders are delivered, created and completed within a time frame of 7 working days or less. This ensures that customers can wear their orders as quickly as possible, promoting their businesses as well as our own! Each staff member has an important role within Stick ‘n’ Stitch Design, some of which include print presser, manager, embroiderer and of course, owner! Our specialised positions create harmony within the workplace that contribute to the smooth-running of the business and allow each of us to create high quality garments in our field. However, we enthusiastically offer a helping hand to each other when needed, to complete orders within the expected time frame.

To create high quality garments that require embroidery, we make stitched out samples in all colours and sizes to send to our customers to either be changed or approved. This same process is done for printing and ensures that customers are happy with their orders and can see what the clothing is going to look like once completed.

Customers are also encouraged to discuss with our staff about which durable garment type is best for their specific needs, as well as the price range that they are aiming for. Stick ‘n’ Stitch Design promotes monthly offers, such as 15% off for all new customers, as well as price matches to help keep prices low whilst simultaneously delivering quality products. All embroidered and printed work is checked over before being packaged and marked as complete in order to maintain our standards.

Although many of our customers are local, we offer timely postal delivery with proof of postage in order to accommodate to our customer’s needs and travel restrictions, whilst also getting our name out into the world!

SUCCESS Business blueprint for

86 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

When Anna Bartholomew was eighteen, she went to the cashpoint at her university but saw she had no more money. Little did she realise how this moment would change the whole trajectory of her life.

To make ends meet as a student she began working in a mortgage call centre in between her studies. Such was her aptitude with people, that her boss at the time suggested she should sit her mortgage advice exams, as she was studying anyway.

It meant she left university as a qualified mortgage adviser and by the time she was 28, she’d started her own mortgage and financial planning business, employing a team of fifty.

With an infectious zest for life, by her own admission she made every conceivable business mistake but did so with a smile on her face. Her business became like an extended family.

By 2013, Anna had merged her company with five others and was sitting on the board of a national business.

Whilst this experience may have terrified others, Anna loved and rose to the challenge until the business was eventually sold off in a multi-eightfigure deal in 2019.

Having been in financial services for 23 years, with little respite – Anna realised she was suffering from anxiety, overwhelm and burnout.

As she tried to navigate her way through what she was experiencing, she turned to hypnotherapy for help. It also enabled her to find joy in her life and business again and she was able to live with purpose and passion once more instead of being held back by being a perfectionist. Not surprisingly Anna knew she too wanted to train as a clinical hypnotherapist so she could help others.

Now, following the successful sale of her business and having left behind her hugely successful career in financial services, Anna is working as an entrepreneur, business strategist, and clinical hypnotherapist.

Anna now runs a program specifically for female entrepreneurs and business owners called the Kind & Powerful Business Blueprint.

Blending principles from the worlds of business and belief system coaching with kind and powerful strategies, to help women to create their own uniquely aligned business blueprint for success.

Trevi launch appeal

for safe, trauma-informed women-only accommodation in the city

In celebration of their 30th Anniversary, local women’s charity, Trevi, has launched their Blossom Appeal, which will focus on raising funds for a women-only accommodation service based in the centre of Plymouth for women affected by trauma and abuse.

Covid-19 has brought gender inequalities into shocking prominence. Women have been disproportionately affected - domestic abuse helpline calls soared by 80%, and murders of women have doubled. Chronic poverty has increased: women are affected most. This, layered against an increase in drug use, county lines activity and child sexual abuse, and the cycle of violence against women and girls continues.

Blossom Women’s House will be a trauma-informed house for women with complex and multiple needs. It has the capacity to accommodate nine women across three floors. It is a safe, contained, homely space with an enclosed back garden. Blossom Women’s House will be the place where women can find some peace and security and can take some positive steps in their journey of recovery from trauma and abuse.

88 MAGAZINE 2 EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

The accommodation is vital as there is a shortage of women-only accommodation in Plymouth. Countless projects, service interventions and commissioned research highlights how a lack of women-only accommodation is acting as a significant barrier to women moving forward in life. Women are entering a revolving door in and out of accommodation, restricting their ability even to get a chance to address their trauma and understand how it manifests so that they can move forward in life.

Without this safe space, women are trapped or sofa surfing in unsafe perpetrators’ homes, sometimes locked into a world of drugs and substance misuse and at continuous and high risk of domestic and sexual violence. Whilst there is already a lot of incredible work happening in Plymouth, Trevi wants to seize this opportunity to help to build capacity for women.

Trevi has now reached a critical time where vital funds are needed to ensure that women are given the best possible chance of exiting a life filled with trauma and abuse by allowing them to move into safe, 24/7 supported, women-only accommodation.

89 MAGAZINE 3 EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Hannah, Trevi CEO, says, ‘This is Trevi’s biggest appeal to date and will significantly impact the lives of women affected by domestic abuse and violence. As we celebrate our 30th milestone, we couldn’t ask for a better start to what will be an exciting year!

‘It’s important that Blossom feels homely and nurturing so that women are supported to heal, grow and thrive. For some women, Blossom will be the first place that they experience what a real home is like. With the help of our local community, we can ensure that Blossom is designed, decorated and furnished to be a warm, homely and welcoming space with thought put into all the finishing touches so that women feel valued and loved.’

90 MAGAZINE 4 EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Tammy has experienced being housed in a mixed accommodation after fleeing domestic abuse and says,

‘It took me years to leave a violent relationship, and the biggest factor in getting yourself out of a dangerous situation is having somewhere safe to heal from your trauma. They put me in a shared house with five other men, there were no locks on the doors, and I genuinely didn’t want to get a bath or a shower. Having a place like Blossom Women’s House as a women-only accommodation will truly saves lives.’

Trevi emphasises that the Time Is Now to end violence against women and girls and make a difference to vulnerable women across the city. The Blossom Appeal needs to raise £615,000 for Trevi to be able to purchase and refurb the property. So far, Trevi has raised £536,000 from caring trusts, foundations, pledges and donors, leaving £79,000 to raise by December 2023. Trevi want to work with community groups, corporates, funders and individuals to make this happen.

What is Endometriosis?

It is when some of the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus on other pelvic organs, such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes and occasionally the bladder, colon or abdominal wall, which is commonly linked with chronic pelvic pain and infertility.

According to recent data, endometriosis affects 10–15% of all women of reproductive age and 70% of women with chronic pelvic pain. Its exact cause is unknown, however, it is commonly seen in women between 30 and 40 who postpone pregnancy, yet pregnancy inhibits endometriosis.

What happens in the body?

During a woman’s regular menstrual cycle the endometrial tissue builds up and is shed if she does not become pregnant. Yet, women with endometriosis develop tissue that acts like the endometrial tissue and starts to break down, thicken and bleed with every cycle.

Endometriosis is stimulated by the levels of our sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone that engorge the tissue with blood as it becomes trapped and the blood has nowhere to escape and this can lead to swelling, inflammation and scarring of the normal tissue.

93 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Did you know endometriosis can be linked to:

• Your immunity as it produces inflammatory immune responses known as cytokines that can aggravate the endometrial lining and increase its growth.

• Exposure to toxins within the womb can be a factor and hormone disrupting chemicals may also play a part.

• Increasing evidence that gut health plays a part as findings have shown that the gut microbiota may be altered in women with endometriosis.

• Oestrogen can make endometriosis worse but does not cause it.

Signs and Symptoms of endometriosis?

These can vary from each woman and pain can be anything from a dull ache to being bedridden with pain. Common symptoms are:

• Painful periods

• Excessive bleeding

• Dull ache

• Cramping

• Bearing down pressure in the pelvic area

• Pain with intercourse

• Pain with emptying the bowel and bladder

• Potential Risk Factors (see below)

Studies show that the following may contribute to the development of endometriosis.

• Caffeine and alcohol intake

• Starting your period at an earlier age

• A shorter length of the menstrual cycle

94 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL
95 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

How can we support endometriosis naturally?

Addressing food and lifestyle can help to support this condition by:

• Avoiding foods that cause inflammation in the body

• Avoiding foods that can raise oestrogen production in the body

• Adding foods that can help to naturally block oestrogen receptors

• Increasing essential fatty acids

• Adopting an anti-inflammatory diet

• Adding in specific supplements, vitamins and minerals

• Addressing any toxic chemicals overload that may play a role in the development of endometriosis

Tips for endometriosis

• Introduce an anti-inflammatory diet

• Add turmeric to your diet - this is a powerful anti-inflammatory spice

• Omega 3s - oily fish - mackerel, salmon, sardines, trout - omega 3 is inflammatory

Also, recent studies show that endometriosis is consistently seen in women who have higher levels of oestrogen, which can cause an imbalance in other hormones.

96 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

If you would like to address any imbalances I highly recommend hormone testing to get clear results in terms of your hormone levels and also look at how you are detoxifying oestrogen safely from the body. Testing allows me to make better decisions to get quicker results for my clients and is a large part of my work, this helps me to clear results so we have a foundation to work from and from there we build your road map to success

It is important that diseases like this are explored with a fully qualified practitioner who can guide and support in a safe and ethical environment that is backed up by science so you can get the best results, this is something that I help my client’s with. As it is a multifactorial condition we need to address other factors like gut health and external factors as I listed above.

Knowing what foods that aggravate the condition and those to add in to support are extremely beneficial for your results. The same goes for supplements, when you are an experienced and fully qualified practitioner you know what needs to be added in to support this condition so you save time, energy and money.

Health conditions like this are not a quick fix and there is no silver bullet, time and commitment is required and the results can be life changing so yes, it is possible. It’s never one size fits all with nutrition and your symptoms are unique to you so I always tailored my clients needs to fit them, not their symptoms.

You deserve the time and attention to restore balance to your health, you are worth the investment in your health. I consider our health to be our greatest assets, let’s face it we cannot simply buy our health we have to take care of ourselves to reap what we sow.

If you would like to gain control of your hormones by getting to the root cause and no longer just “manage” your symptoms. It is possible to support this condition naturally once you have the right support. I have helped countless women get back into balance, covering a variety of different symptoms and helping women finally find success, empowering women to feel confident about themselves.

I want you to know that my help is personalised and not “one size fits all”, we are all individuals, so what works for your friend or sister may not work for you. When we work together you get a tailored plan that is as special as you are.

Managing the Menstrual Cycle

for Women Who Lift

Understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on training and nutrition is crucial for females who lift. The menstrual cycle is a complex series of hormonal changes that occur in the female body every month, and it can have a significant impact on a woman’s performance, recovery, and overall health.

98 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN
HOSPITALITY RETAIL
MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Research has shown that hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can affect a woman’s energy levels, strength, endurance, and recovery time. For example, during the follicular phase, women may experience increased energy levels and endurance when oestrogen levels are higher. On the other hand, during the luteal phase, when progesterone levels are higher, women may experience decreased energy levels and increased fatigue.

Furthermore, the menstrual cycle can also affect a woman’s nutritional needs. During different phases of the menstrual cycle, women may require different levels of macro and micronutrients to support their training and recovery needs. For example, during the luteal phase, women may require higher levels of carbohydrates and iron to keep energy levels and prevent fatigue.

By understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on training and nutrition, women can optimise their training and recovery, reduce the risk of injury, and enhance their overall performance. Therefore, women must educate themselves about the menstrual cycle and its impact on training and nutrition.

The menstrual cycle is a natural process in a woman’s body approximately every 28 days (though it can vary from person to person). It involves a series of hormonal changes that prepare the body for pregnancy. The menstrual cycle has four phases:

• MENSTRUAL PHASE

• FOLLICULAR PHASE

• OVULATION PHASE

• LUTEAL PHASE

100 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Menstrual Phase:

This phase occurs at the beginning of the cycle when the uterus sheds its lining in menstrual blood. It typically lasts between 3 to 7 days.

Follicular Phase:

This phase begins after the menstrual phase and lasts about 14 days. During this phase, the follicles in the ovaries mature and prepare to release an egg.

Ovulation Phase:

This phase occurs around day 14 of the menstrual cycle when the ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube. It is the most fertile phase of the menstrual cycle.

Luteal Phase:

This phase begins after ovulation and lasts approximately 14 days. During this phase, the uterus prepares for a possible pregnancy. If the egg is not fertilised, the uterus will shed its lining in the next menstrual phase.

These four phases are controlled by the hormones oestrogen, progesterone, luteinising hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which fluctuate throughout the cycle. Understanding these phases and hormonal changes is essential for women to optimise their training and nutrition during each menstrual cycle.

101 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Menstrual phase: also known as the menstruation or bleeding phase, is the first phase of the menstrual cycle. This phase occurs when the uterus sheds its lining in menstrual blood, which is then eliminated from the body through the vagina. The menstrual phase usually lasts 3 to 7 days but can vary from person to person.

Hormonal Changes during the Menstrual Phase:

During the menstrual phase, oestrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest. Because the previous cycle’s egg was not fertilised, the corpus luteum (a temporary endocrine gland) produces progesterone and disintegrates. As a result, the lining of the uterus breaks down and sheds, leading to menstruation.

Nutritional Recommendations for the Menstrual Phase:

It is essential to support the body’s nutrient needs during the menstrual phase to promote optimal health and recovery.

Here are some nutritional recommendations for the menstrual phase:

Iron-rich foods: During menstruation, the body loses blood, decreasing iron levels. Therefore, consuming iron-rich foods such as leafy greens, red meat, lentils, beans, and fortified cereals is crucial.

Vitamin C: Consuming foods high in vitamin C can help increase iron absorption. Some vitamin C-rich foods include citrus fruits, berries, tomatoes, and bell peppers.

Hydration: Drinking plenty of water and fluids can help reduce bloating, cramping, and other discomforts associated with menstruation.

Balanced meals: Eating balanced meals with carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats can help stabilise blood sugar levels, reduce cravings, and provide sustained energy.

MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Training Recommendations for the Menstrual Phase:

Many women may experience fatigue and reduced energy levels during the menstrual phase. Here are some training recommendations to help optimise performance during this phase:

Modify intensity: It may be beneficial to adjust the training intensity during the menstrual phase to accommodate reduced energy levels.

Recovery: Incorporating rest and recovery techniques such as stretching, foam rolling, or yoga can help promote relaxation and alleviate menstrual symptoms.

Hydration: Staying hydrated during training sessions is essential, especially during menstrual when the body loses fluids.

Listen to your body: It is essential to listen to your body during the menstrual phase and adjust the training plan accordingly. Taking a break or modifying the training schedule may be necessary to support the body’s needs.

In summary, the body undergoes hormonal changes during menstrual, affecting nutritional needs and training performance. By consuming nutrient-dense foods and modifying the training plan, women can support their health, recovery, and overall performance during this menstrual cycle.

The follicular phase is the second phase of the menstrual cycle and occurs after the menstrual phase. It lasts for approximately 14 days and is characterised by the development and maturation of follicles in the ovaries, which contain eggs. During this phase, hormonal changes occur, preparing the body for ovulation.

Hormonal Changes during the Follicular Phase:

During the follicular phase, oestrogen levels begin to rise, stimulating the growth of the follicles in the ovaries. As the follicles mature, they release oestrogen into the bloodstream, which enables the production of luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). These hormones trigger ovulation, which occurs at the end of the follicular phase.

Nutritional Recommendations for the Follicular Phase:

To support optimal health and hormone balance during this phase, consuming nutrient-dense foods that provide essential vitamins and minerals is vital. Here are some nutritional recommendations for the follicular phase:

High fibre foods: Eating high-fibre foods such as whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes can help regulate digestion and promote hormonal balance.

Antioxidants: Consuming foods rich in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy greens, and nuts, can help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.

Omega-3 fatty acids: Including foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, chia seeds, and walnuts, can help reduce inflammation and support hormonal balance.

Vitamin D: Enough vitamin D is essential for bone health and hormonal balance. Spending time outdoors and consuming fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods can help boost vitamin D levels.

103 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

Training Recommendations for the Follicular Phase:

During the follicular phase, oestrogen levels increase, enhancing energy and endurance. Here are some training recommendations to help optimise performance during this phase:

Strength Training: Incorporating strength training during the follicular phase can help promote muscle growth and improve strength.

High-Intensity Training: Increasing oestrogen levels during this phase can improve endurance, making it an ideal time for high-intensity training such as interval training or sprints.

Cardiovascular Training: Cardiovascular training such as running or cycling can also be beneficial during the follicular phase, as energy levels are typically higher.

Recovery: Incorporating recovery techniques such as foam rolling, stretching, or yoga can help promote relaxation and alleviate menstrual symptoms.

In summary, the follicular phase is characterised by hormonal changes that prepare the body for ovulation. By consuming nutrient-dense foods and adjusting their training plan, female athletes can support their health, recovery, and overall performance during this menstrual cycle.

104 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

The Ovulation phase is the menstrual cycle’s midpoint and lasts approximately 3-5 days. This phase is characterised by releasing a mature egg from the ovaries, which is then available for fertilisation. During this phase, hormonal changes occur, preparing the body for reproduction.

Hormonal Changes during the Ovulation Phase:

During the Ovulation phase, oestrogen levels peak, triggering a surge in luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This surge stimulates the release of a mature egg from the ovaries, which travels through the fallopian tube and into the uterus. Testosterone levels also increase during this phase, contributing to increased energy and sex drive.

Nutritional Recommendations for the Ovulation Phase:

To support optimal health and hormone balance during the Ovulation phase, consuming nutrient-dense foods that provide essential vitamins and minerals is vital. Here are some nutritional recommendations for the Ovulation phase:

Iron-rich foods: Iron-rich foods such as lean meats, dark leafy greens, and legumes can help support healthy blood flow and prevent anaemia.

Magnesium-rich foods: Magnesium-rich foods such as almonds, spinach, and avocado can help reduce menstrual symptoms and support hormonal balance.

Calcium-rich foods: Calcium-rich foods such as dairy, leafy greens, and fortified foods can help support bone health and hormonal balance.

Hydration: Drinking plenty of water and electrolyte-rich fluids can help support hydration levels and reduce bloating.

Training Recommendations for the Ovulation Phase:

During the Ovulation phase, energy levels are typically higher, making it an ideal time for high-intensity training. Here are some training recommendations to help optimise performance during this phase:

High-Intensity Training: The increase in energy levels during this phase can support high-intensity training such as sprints, interval training, or plyometrics.

Strength Training: Incorporating strength training can help promote muscle growth and improve overall strength.

Cardiovascular Training: Cardiovascular training such as running or cycling can also be beneficial during the Ovulation phase, as energy levels are typically higher.

Recovery: Incorporating recovery techniques such as foam rolling, stretching, or yoga can help promote relaxation and alleviate menstrual symptoms.

In summary, the Ovulation phase is characterised by hormonal changes that prepare the body for reproduction. By consuming nutrient-dense foods and adjusting their training plan, female athletes can support their health, recovery, and overall performance during this menstrual cycle.

105 MAGAZINE EMPOWERING WOMEN HOSPITALITY RETAIL

The luteal phase is the menstrual cycle’s final phase and lasts approximately 10-14 days. This phase is characterised by hormonal changes that prepare the uterus for the implantation of a fertilised egg and the onset of menstruation if conception does not occur.

Hormonal Changes during the Luteal Phase:

During the luteal phase, progesterone levels increase, triggering changes in the uterine lining to prepare for implantation. If fertilisation does not occur, progesterone levels decrease, causing the uterus lining to shed and resulting in menstruation. Additionally, oestrogen levels remain high during this phase but typically fall towards the end.

Nutritional Recommendations for the Luteal Phase:

To support optimal health and hormone balance during the luteal phase, consuming nutrientdense foods that provide essential vitamins and minerals is crucial. Here are some nutritional recommendations for the luteal stage:

Complex carbohydrates: Consuming whole grains, sweet potatoes, and beans can help support stable blood sugar levels and reduce cravings.

Healthy fats: Incorporating healthy fats such as avocado, nuts, and olive oil can help reduce inflammation and support hormonal balance.

Vitamin B6: Consuming foods rich in vitamin B6, such as salmon, chicken, and bananas, can help alleviate menstrual symptoms such as bloating and mood swings.

Iron-rich foods: Iron-rich foods such as lean meats, dark leafy greens, and legumes can help support healthy blood flow and prevent anaemia.

Training Recommendations for the Luteal Phase:

During the luteal phase, energy levels may fluctuate, making it essential to listen to the body and adjust the training plan accordingly. Here are some training recommendations to help optimise performance during this phase:

Low to moderate intensity training: Incorporating low to intermediate-intensity activity such as yoga, walking, or light resistance training can help support recovery and reduce stress.

Mind-body activities: Incorporating mind-body activities such as meditation or breathing exercises can help promote relaxation and reduce stress.

Recovery: Incorporating recovery techniques such as foam rolling, stretching, or massage can help alleviate menstrual symptoms and promote relaxation.

Hydration: Drinking plenty of water and electrolyte-rich fluids can help support hydration levels and reduce bloating.

In conclusion, understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on training and nutrition is crucial for women who exercise to optimise their performance, prevent injuries, and maintain overall health. The menstrual cycle is a complex process involving hormonal changes affecting energy levels, nutrient requirements, and recovery.

By understanding the menstrual cycle, women can tailor their nutrition and training plans to support their body’s needs during each phase. During the menstrual phase, women should focus on replenishing lost nutrients and incorporating light to moderate exercise to support recovery. During the follicular phase, women can increase carbohydrate intake and engage in high-intensity training. During the Ovulation phase, women can focus on increasing protein intake and incorporating plyometric or power-based exercises. Finally, during the luteal phase, women can focus on nutrient-dense foods and low to moderate intensity training to support recovery and reduce stress.

In summary, here are the key nutritional and training recommendations for each phase of the menstrual cycle:

Menstrual Phase: Increase iron and protein intake. Incorporate light to moderate exercises such as yoga or walking.

Focus on recovery and hydration.

Follicular Phase: Increase carbohydrate intake. Incorporate high-intensity training such as interval training or weightlifting.

Ovulation Phase: Increase protein intake. Incorporate plyometric or power-based exercises. Focus on hydration and recovery.

Luteal Phase:

Consume nutrient-dense foods such as complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and iron-rich foods. Incorporate low to moderate intensity training such as yoga or light resistance training.

Focus on recovery, hydration, and reducing stress.

In conclusion, understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on training and nutrition is essential for women to optimise their performance and maintain overall health. By tailoring their nutrition and exercise plans to each phase of the menstrual cycle, women can support their body’s needs and achieve their fitness goals.

How to Manage

Menopause Bloating as a Business Woman

The Business Woman’s Menopause

I hope you enjoyed reading my last article on “Muscle Loss”. Since writing the article I have competed in my ProDebut at The Pure Elite Bodybuilding British Championships and came second, held a photoshoot with some of the local members from My Menopause Resilience Club™ to show how we have been building our muscles! I have also been in training with eight of my Private Clients as we are climbing Snowdon on Saturday 24th in memory of one of my closest friends and Club Group Leader Helen. So I will let you know how we get on next time.

Back to this edition, I am going to share my personal experience of Bloating which is “Change Number 28” from the “40 Changes over 40” to expect as our hormones start to change.

To understand more about how menopausal changes could be impacting you as a Business Woman please use this link https://survey.zohopublic.com/zs/VyRQBN to complete my Menopause Resilience Assessment™.

HOW TO MANAGE MENOPAUSE BLOATING

As Business Women, suffering with the “bloated feeling” it can feel uncomfortable and frustrating when trying to squeeze into clothes that actually fitted last week. Yes, I can see you nodding in agreement with me!

Then our internal critic starts talking to us with “we need to lose weight again to get back into that dress”. When actually we are suffering from Bloating and not weight gain.

DID YOU KNOW

The impact of bloating, in addition to the other 39 changes can be particularly challenging. With 51% of Women taking time off from their business due to their symptoms. Then unnecessarily 32% of Women sell their business as the impact of their symptoms become too much to manage along with everything else.

This is why I created The Menopause Resilience System® to help Business Women “Stay in Business” and Be Smart, Sassy & Stronger through Menopause.

MY BLOATING STORY

How could the food I have always eaten suddenly make me feel bloated and heavy? Why when going out for a meal would I feel uncomfortable and “fat” for days? I even struggled at times having an upset stomach to add to the misery of bloating.

Then each morning I faced the tricky decision of what to wear at home, the gym and at work that would cover my bloated stomach and still make me feel good!

SO WHAT CAUSES OUR BLOATING?

Bloating usually occurs right at the start of our hormonal changes. It could even be one of the first symptoms we notice! It causes us to feel extreme fullness, tightness, or swelling in our abdomen. Looking back now with my knowledge of the “menopause transitions” this was definitely one of the first of “The 40 Changes Over 40” to impact me so personally.

Your body is a finely tuned machine and the finest system within it is the digestive system. This system is affected by hormonal decline and fluctuations. Therefore this leads to stomach upsets such as being bloated, indigestion, constipation and diarrhoea. It is only recently that we are becoming aware of how much our digestive system is impacted by the change in our oestrogen levels.

Oestrogen is responsible for many functions in our bodies including keeping our cortisol levels low. Cortisol is a hormone that is associated with stress and when oestrogen declines, cortisol levels rise.

This can slow down the digestive process. Therefore increasing the amount of time it takes for food to break down. This can then make it more difficult for us to manage our food in the digestive process.

Too little progesterone can cause the colon to slow down. The longer food waste remains in your colon, the dryer it gets. Stools also tend to be dryer when oestrogen and progesterone levels are low.

Constipation is also common in menopause. When you are constipated, it can be really difficult to completely void your bowels and you may be uncomfortable or have an overall sluggish feeling for days or even weeks.

MANAGE BLOATING WITH THE BUSINESS WOMAN’S COACHING BOOST

Bloating can start whilst you are peri-menopausal and continue beyond menopause. The complexity of managing Bloating as a Business Woman can be particularly challenging – so use The Menopause Resilience System ® solutions below to help you manage that “uncomfortable” bloating feeling::

MENO-FOOD

• Timing - Chew your food slowly. Do not leave more than 4 hours between meals to manage your blood sugar levels to limit the release of stress hormones. No less than 3 hours between meals to allow your digestive system time to absorb the nutrients.

• Food - Have a balanced meal plan including protein, healthy fats, vegetables, fruit and complex carbohydrates. Include sauerkraut, kimchi, chia seeds and kombucha. Keep a diary or consider an intolerance test to identify any triggers.

• Water - Keep hydrated and drink at least 2 litres a day. This will help the food pass through the digestive system smoothly.

• Probiotics & Prebiotics - To ensure that you have the right balance to keep your gut healthy as abnormal levels can lead to bloating.

• Fibre - To cleanse the colon, encourage regular bowel movements and help move food through the digestive system.

MENO-SELFCARE

• Calm - Manage your stress levels as the digestive system is very sensitive to the stress hormones which can trigger bloating.

• Move - Exercise using my infamous 4S’s Move Plan™ to get your “systems” moving including the digestive system which will help with bloating.
