hroughout all four seasons, Montréal hosts many festivals showcasing the city’s vibrant cultural offerings, several of which are gay and lesbian themed. BBCM is host to many gay and lesbian parties. Check out the FunMaps event listings on pages 29-30 of this guide for dates and more information about Red Weekend, Hot & Dry Weekend, Black & Blue, Twist and Bal des Boys. Montréal’s pride celebration, Divers/Cité, takes place at the end of July each year. In addition, the Montréal International Jazz Festival, Just for Laughs Festival (comedy and entertainment) and FrancoFolies (French music festival) are big annual draws. The World Film Festival, Festival du Nouveau cinema and Image+Nation (The LGBT film festival) constitute a dynamic film scene in Montréal. Festival International Montréal en Arts, takes place every summer and is a celebration of over 250 visual artists, painters, illustrators, photographers, sculptors and craftsmen. Their works are displayed along Ste-Catherine Street. Every summer the street is closed to traffic (Aires Libres) and becomes a huge pedestrian walkway. Considered the main thoroughfare of the gay village, Ste-Catherine Street is the address of many gay and lesbian establishments.

he Village is one of the largest gay neighborhoods in the world. Beaudry métro station, bearing the colors of the gay community, is located at the core of the Village, which stretches east to west along Sainte-Catherine Street, the main business thoroughfare, from Saint-Hubert to Papineau Streets. In the neighborhood you will find cafés, bistros, boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and exotic eateries. To really get a feel for the place, stroll along the north-south side streets between Sherbrooke and René-Lévesque and admire the carefully restored brick homes. The Art Deco architecture of the impressive Saint-Jacques market building and the Écomusée du fier monde across the way on Amherst Street are worth a stop.

e Village, appellation reconnue du quartier gai, est l'un des plus importants au monde. Avec la station de métro Beaudry aux couleurs de la communauté, le Village est délimité à l'ouest par la rue Saint-Hubert et à l'est par la rue Papineau, avec la rue commerciale Sainte-Catherine, comme espace central. Pour vraiment sentir l'âme de ce quartier, empruntez les rues transversales jusqu'à la rue Sherbrooke au nord et René-Lévesque au sud pour y découvrir des maisons de briques restaurées avec goût. L'imposant édifice du marché Saint-Jacques et le Musée du fier monde qui lui fait face, sur la rue Amherst, méritent qu'on s'attarde à leur architecture d'inspiration Art déco.

In fact, the Museum and its site are inextricably linked. Rising above evidence of more than 1,000 years of human activity, it houses remarkable architectural remains, displayed in situ with absolute respect for their integrity. Pointe-à-Callière is the only sizeable archaeology museum in Canada. Le Musée doit notamment sa réalisation aux importantes découvertes archéologiques effectuées sur les lieux dès les années 1980. The exhibit shines a light on a period of great social change. Until 1967, homosexuality was illegal in the UK and gay men were often persecuted and prosecuted. Many chose a life as stewards aboard ocean liners where there was greater tolerance of camp and gay men. The Maritime Museum of the Atlantic is honoured to be the North American debut for this exhibition which will additionally include Nova Scotian and Canadian content.
