ontréal, a metropolis of over 3.8 million people, has a gay and lesbian community that makes up a significant segment of its population. Through the years, this has resulted in the forging of a special spirit of openness and tolerance between the general public and Montréal's gay community. Such open-mindedness has made the city, particularly The Village (one of the largest gay neighborhoods in the world) a travel destination not to be missed. Here, more than anywhere else, gay men and women of all ages, from all backgrounds, can walk together in safe, comfortable surroundings. A magnet for world travelers and one of the world's most exciting urban getaways, few cities can compare with Montréal. Its unique character is a testament to history and Montrealers have made their city a warm, welcoming destination. It is a city known to celebrate life with a passion. Montreal is the largest French-speaking city in the world outside of Paris and FunMaps is pleased to present this edition in both French and English! 2

T

he Village is one of the largest gay neighborhoods in the world. Beaudry métro station, bearing the colors of the gay community, is located at the core of The Village, which stretches east to west along Sainte-Catherine Street, the main business thoroughfare, from Saint-Hubert to Papineau Streets. In the neighborhood you will find cafés, bistros, boutiques, antique shops, restaurants and exotic eateries. To really get a feel for the place, stroll along the north-south side streets between Sherbrooke and René-Lévesque and admire the carefully restored brick homes. The Art Deco architecture of the impressive Saint-Jacques market building and the Écomusée du fier monde across the way on Amherst Street are worth a stop.

L

ttawa is a bilingual, walkable city that offers an eclectic mix of cultural attractions and events, outdoor adventure and culinary hot spots. Near Parliament Hill, Canada’s seat of government, you’ll find the Supreme Court of Canada (where same-sex marriage was debated) as well as the best in Canadian culture including the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum and the National Arts Centre, a multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre—one of the largest in the world. Between culture stops, experience the Rideau Canal, Ontario’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. In spring, summer or fall, cruise or rent a bike along this iconic waterway. In winter, the Rideau Canal turns into the world’s largest outdoor skating rink, as designated by Guinness World Records, stretching 7.8 km (4.8 miles) through downtown Ottawa. Looking for more outdoor adventure? Head for the nearby Gatineau Hills for some hiking, cycling, canoeing, zip-lining, skiing or snow-shoeing– all just a 15-minute drive from downtown. The ByWard Market is one of the oldest and largest farmers’ markets in Canada. This four-block-by-four-block neighbourhood has two personalities. By day, with over 260 farmer and artisan stands and funky boutiques and shops, it’s bustling with visitors and locals alike. By night, it’s Ottawa’s entertainment district, filled with great restaurants, clubs, and bistros. For more information visit: www.ottawatourism.ca/lgbt 32

rince Edward Island – Add a Little Island to your next vacation Everything you're looking for in a holiday destination is right here in welcoming and safe Prince Edward Island. Whether you want to “chill out” or fill every moment, our little Island is the place to be in 2015! What’s your pleasure-golf, the outdoors, adventure tours, music, museums, cultural events? You will find it all here on our easy to access little Island. Plan your stay in the comfort of a gay-friendly modern hotel, a quaint little inn, a seaside cottage or a tent of your own. Tantalize your taste buds at one of our many culinary locations. For the romantic among you, our beach weddings and reception venues are among the most popular in the world! It’s so easy to get here! From Boston through Maine & New Brunswick, then across the Confederation Bridge, the distance is a mere 600 miles, a 10 hour drive. The Charlottetown Airport is serviced by Air Canada and Westjet, with connections via various US airlines. Cruise ships dock regularly in Charlottetown harbour to connect with Island tours and other amazing activities. PEI, often called “the gentle Island” because of the friendly, welcoming nature of its people is perhaps best known around the world as the home of the infamous Anne of Green Gables and its renowned author, Lucy Maud Montgomery. But, PEI is steeped in history far beyond our beloved red-headed Anne.

Memories last longer when you add a little island! 36

hether you set out to navigate Halifax with a plan in mind and a map in hand – or by spontaneously seeing where the wind takes you, enjoy the journey. Adventures can be found around every corner. As the cultural and historical capital of Atlantic Canada, Halifax has been delighting visitors for over 260 years. Halifax’s lively LGBT community throws the largest Pride festival in Atlantic Canada - held over ten days every July - which boasts an array of events including theatre, music, art exhibits and the Pride Parade. Halifax’s downtown and the trendy North End neighbourhood are also home to several gay-owned cafés, bars and specialty shops where patrons are always welcomed by the friendly nature of Haligonians. On the other side of the harbour, just a short ferry ride away, is Dartmouth. The downtown is compact, walkable, with a beautiful boardwalk and locally owned cafes, restaurants, galleries and bars. Browse Portland Street where you’ll find a collection of dedicated and inspiring shop owners providing a unique and local shopping experience. Access by air: the Halifax Stanfield International Airport offers direct flights from many Canadian, US, European, and Caribbean destinations, including year-round flights from New York City, Chicago, Boston, Washington, Detroit and Philadelphia. By sea: over 20 cruise lines include Halifax as a marquee port-of-call on their Canada-New England or Transatlantic itineraries. Nova Star Cruises offers daily sailing to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia from Portland, Maine. By rail: VIA Rail offers 3 trains a week from Montreal (leaving Sun/Wed/Fri, returning Sun/Tues/Fri) connecting in Montreal to other parts of Canada and the US. 40

Greetings... from Halifax Pride Halifax invites you to find yourself out east, in a vibrant, LGBTQ+ friendly city by the sea. Visit a place where residents and visitors alike are free to come as they are and discover a wealth of intimate experiences. Halifax Pride presents a truly new & unique experience for those familiar with LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in North America. Our compact geographic size and location combined with deep maritime history creates a Pride experience unlike any other. The strength of our community comes to a point each July to present a 10-day festival featuring something for everyone including huge outdoor dance parties at the Citadel Hill National Historic Park, boat cruises in the Halifax harbour, the Queer Acts Theatre Festival and a Community Heritage Street Fair. Everything culminates with a huge parade through historic downtown Halifax, where attendance consistently tops 100,000 spectators. At Halifax Pride, we encourage participants to showcase their own Pride. Because of our small and tightly-knit community, we rely on community members and organizations to influence programming; over the years, this has resulted in a festival with programming so diverse that anyone can find themselves reflected . Our community consistently strikes a balance between the celebratory aspects of Pride and an appreciation for our long and storied past. Each year, our festival continues to grow. We’ve climbed to the 4th largest in Canada, but maintain our spot as 1st loudest and proudest. Come visit us out east! You may come from away, but you’ll leave as a friend. Safe travels!
