ew England is known for its lengthy coastline of white sand beaches, picturesque lighthouses, breathtaking fall foliage, pristine lakes, scenic mountains, delicious fresh seafood and quaint historic villages. Comprised of six states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island, New England has countless attractions and many sizeable cities to explore. Featured in this FunMap are the popular gay and lesbian travel destinations of Provincetown, MA, Boston, MA, Providence, RI and Ogunquit, ME. Provincetown, located at the extreme tip of Cape Cod, is like no other place in North America. Quaint, narrow streets and long wharfs remind visitors of the town’s origins as a fishing and whaling village. Only three miles wide at its center, much of Provincetown is a National Seashore with beautiful beaches and magnificent sand dunes. A mecca for artists and writers since the turn of the century, Provincetown’s appeal lies in the relaxed and isolated nature of its location and the sense of individuality of its residents. Visitors soak in the stark beauty of the ocean, bay and dunes while also enjoying the cozy cafes, restaurants, shops, nightclubs and cabarets that are all conveniently located within the town’s friendly, walk-able confines. Many love Provincetown for the fun and sun of its summers and the especially popular gay and lesbian events, which include Carnival and much more. It is also a great place to visit in the off-season. In the fall, winter and spring, the town’s life is serene and peaceful. Food, lodging and shopping are available year round. 2

Welcome...

Greetings...

to Provincetown! Provincetown, Massachusetts, really is a special place in so many ways. Tucked away at the end of Cape Cod, Provincetown has long been a welcoming society since the Pilgrims first landed on our shores nearly four centuries ago. Provincetown is not just a gay-friendly destination but more of a “gay everyday” place where people live, work & play. Where couples can hold hands, show affection in public and be themselves. Provincetown’s openness, is why this little seaside town is a favorite worldwide. Named “The #1 Gay Community in America” by Gay.com and “Best Resort Town” by GayCities.com. On any given day you could see a drag queen walking the street barking her latest show times, leather men holding hands on the bench outside of town hall, lesbians frolicking at a foam party, bears gathering at tea dance and hundreds of others dressed up in the craziest outfits imaginable because it’s a day that ends in “Y”. Provincetown is known for its beautiful landscapes, amazing beaches, fabulous food, amazing art and unique shops. Roughly only 3.5 miles long Provincetown it is easy to navigate on foot, bike or watercraft. It is no wonder that Provincetown is one of the top gay travel destinations in the country, as well as a popular second home market for the gay community. I hope you enjoy your time here in Provincetown and that the memories you make encourage you to return year after year like so many do. And who knows maybe you’ll find your own reason to make Provincetown a place to call home.

Area Overview Map

Provincetown Art Association & Museum The Provincetown Art Association and Museum, (PAAM) was founded in 1914. Since its start, it has become a “nationally recognized, year-round cultural institution”. Its purpose is to exhibit art that would bring a connection among the neighborhood. That has happened. Last year, PAAM celebrated its first 100 years as the primeval on-going province of art in America. Its mission is to “operate strictly as a nonprofit, educational, artistic, and cultural organization”; to promote appreciation of all categories of Fine Art. The museum hosts a series of different workshops throughout the year & have special youth programs. Programming and exhibitions highlighted significant artists, artwork, and events that contributed to PAAM becoming the vital cultural institution it is today. Under the brilliant leadership of Christine McCarthy, the Museum’s Executive Director, PAAM continues to thrive and grow. I attended an art auction at PAAM and there was lively bidding on local art of all types. Provincetown continues to draw artists, who come for the wonderful colors, seascapes, and shear beauty of the seaport and unique character of the community. Check out FunMaps.com, to learn more information about the museum and other fun places to experience in Provincetown.

Attractions Art's Dune Tours

Provincetown Repertory Theatre

4 Standish St, Provincetown 508-487-1950 Take a tour of the historic sand dunes on the Provincetown Cape Cod National Seashore protected lands. We offer a wide variety of tours to suit everyone's needs. Our tours are perfect for people of all ages. Tours depart daily from the center of town.

Cape Cod National Seashore Spanning over 40 miles down Cape Cod, the National Seashore is composed of 6 beaches as well as marshes, ponds and glacial uplands. Explore this vast stretch and catch a glimpse of Cape Cod's past. Visit lighthouses, photograph fantastic landscapes and stumble upon wild cranberry bogs. Ranger-guided activities are available throughout the year.

Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch of Provincetown 307 Commercial St, Provincetown 800-826-9300 Each Dolphin Fleet vessel is specifically designed for whale watching and comfort. There is a sundeck on the second level and a walk out platform for viewing on the bow. The interior cabin has seating for over 100 passengers and the cabin is centrally heated and air-cooled. We limit the number of passengers we carry in an earnest attempt to make each trip satisfying and comfortable.

Herring Cove For a bit more adventure head over to Herring Cove and say goodbye to tan lines. The “nude” (not quite legal but commonly practiced, so be careful) beach of Provincetown lies on the opposite side of the cape from Race Point affording visitors warmer waters and less winds, there's even a high tide lake. Traditionally the right hand side of the beach is considered more family oriented, while the left is more gay-friendly.

Pilgrim Monument High Pole Hill Road, Provincetown Completed in 1910, the Pilgrim Monument was erected in commemoration of the Mayflower’s first landing in the New World. The largest of all the granite structures in America, the Pilgrim Monument rewards visitors brave enough to make the climb to the top with unbeatable views of sand & sea.

238 Bradford Street, Provincetown 508-487-9793 The company’s goal is to produce works historically linked to Provincetown - new plays and contemporary classics to entertain and engage Cape Cod audiences. From presenting the plays of contemporary playwrights Joe Pintauro, Edward Albee and Terrence McNally, to engaging the award-winning director Jose Quintero to direct the plays of Eugene O’Neill, The REP is a shining example of regional theater.

Provincetown Trolley Inc. 37 Court Street, Provincetown 508-487-9483 Provincetown Trolley will take you on a 40minute narrated tour of Provincetown. You will travel Commercial Street. You'll see the art district, hundreds of boutiques, and beautiful Cape Cod homes. The Narration covers the past to the present with over 20 points of interest, including the first visitor to Provincetown, the landing place of the pilgrims, the "graveyard of the Atlantic", the Pilgrim Memorial Monument and Museum, playwright Eugene O'Neill and the oldest home in Provincetown.

Race Point Beach You'll feel as if you've reached the end of the world here at Race Point Beach, where the Cape Cod Bay waters meet wild Atlantic Ocean waves to create a roiling surge called "The Race." The perfect spot for fun in the sun, this beach at the tip of the cape is often windy but full of breathtaking views. Sweeping over 8 miles, keep your eye on the sea and you just might spot a whale.

Providence

Welcome...

P

P

rovidence is a very small city in a very small state. Perhaps because of this, it has a distinct charm few other state capitals can claim. Much of the architecture is original eighteenth century and not many cities can boast so many sumptuous examples of Georgian grandeur. The neoclassical Rhode Island State House straddles downtown and Smith Hill and is one of the most prominent buildings in the city. Completed in 1904, it has one of the world’s largest self-supported marble domes. Constructed in the 1990s, Waterplace Park and the adjoining Riverwalk triggered considerable reinvestment in the city’s downtown. Now host to the city’s popular summer Waterfire event, Waterplace Park is a huge tourist draw. Branded as the “Creative Capital”, Providence is home to the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the nation’s finest art schools. Additionally, Providence is home to Brown University, Johnson & Wales University and Providence College. These universities, along with the State Government and several large hospitals and medical facilities comprise the leading sources of employment. Of political significance, former mayor David N. Cicilline was the first openly gay mayor of an American state capital. The city’s nightlife scene is lively with bars, pubs, dance clubs & restaurants sprinkled throughout the downtown core. Nearby Navy installations add sailors to a unique mix of patrons that also include students, artists and professionals. 36

from the PWCVB Greetings and welcome to Providence, Rhode Island. It is my hope you find the city accommodating, the nightlife enjoyable and the dining delicious. From its founding more than 375 years ago until today, our city has both preached and practiced a “come-as-you-are” kind of character. This kind of openmindedness has led to worldrenowned artistic creations such as the awe-inspiring WaterFire and scores of grant-winning geniuses at our internationally known academic institutions. Today, Providence is a great example of a reinvented American city – diverse, sophisticated, accessible and intelligent. And the national media is taking notice. The city recently placed first in the country in Travel + Leisure’s “America’s Favorite Cities” poll, while the New York Times recently described Providence as having “exceptional food, compelling art and architecture, and a thriving gay scene”, all while remaining “unpretentious and affordable.” The city is also praised for its sizzling culinary scene, recently being highlighted as one of the country’s most notable dining destinations in the pages of SAVEUR magazine. But each visit to Providence is unique. The city provides a great launch pad for visitors to create their own experience and make their own memories. I am confident you will enjoy crafting your memorable moments in the “Creative Capital.” Sincerely,

Martha J. Sheridan President & CEO, Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau

Welcome to Ogunquit

O

O

Greetings... from the Town of Ogunquit

ften misspelled & mispronounced, Ogunquit (Algonquit, Ogonquit) is the friendly little beach and artist colony that hovers on the southern coast of Maine. Ogunquit features one of the top rated beaches in the USA, and a picturesque walk called the Marginal Way. Ogunquit is only 4 square miles. There are two main sections: the village and Perkins Cove. Most gay nightlife, bed and breakfasts and inns are located in the village. Ogunquit is your vacation destination for every season! Spring: brings fresh flowers, Patriots Day celebrations, a challenging round of golf, fishing and hiking. In the evening, enjoy a specialty wine, dinner, or some musical entertainment at one of many fantastic area restaurants and then return to your room to soak in a hot tub or curl up by a crackling fire. Summer: walk on the pristine beach and see waves crashing into granite cliffs and evergreens rising above the birch trees along the Marginal Way. Ogunquit has long been a beautiful summer destination for visitors. Fall: brings the foliage, OgunquitFest, antiquing, and the opportunity for you and your pet to enjoy the beach and Marginal Way. Winter: brings Christmas By the Sea, Mardi Gras, ice skating, and the opportunity to pamper yourself with a spa treatment. Today, many travelers are finding that Ogunquit provides a wonderful year round vacation experience. Discover the charm of Ogunquit in all four seasons and see what you've been missing!

Whether it's a breathtaking view of the seascape, an image of a lobster boat passing through the hand-operated drawbridge in Perkins Cove, or one of Ogunquit's fragrant and meticulously manicured gardens... there's a potential postcard with every step. Ogunquit has everything for everyone. Lodging choices range from cozy B&B's and inns to fine hotels, resorts and spas. Theater lovers flock to the Ogunquit Playhouse for the summer stock performances. Shoppers rave about the assortment of galleries, boutiques and gift shops and discriminating diners have an abundant selection of fine restaurants to satisfy nearly every taste - including lobster! The night life is bustling here, with a famous Piano bar, live comedy, and dance floors second to none. Ogunquit is your vacation destination for every season. Open since 1972, the Yellow Monkey caters to a mixed gay/straight clientele and is prized chiefly for its stellar location. The 50-room compound, comprised of various buildings, is on U.S. 1, just north of the town center, a short walk to the beach and just steps to restaurants, nightlife and shopping. Its quaint rooms are decorated with somewhat frilly, Victorian-inspired, décor. Overall, this is an excellent option if you are aiming for convenience and a great location.
