s an International center of business, finance and arts, Canada's largest city, Toronto, is an urban cultural mosaic and one of the world’s cleanest, safest and most diverse cities. Friendly faces, welcoming establishments, and a LGBT community of almost 350,000 creates an environment other big cities strive to achieve. Toronto is a great place to be gay, lesbian and trans. The Province of Ontario recently passed “Toby’s Bill”, including gender identity and gender expression into the Human Rights Code. Toronto recognizes same-sex marriage, inviting couples from around the world flock to Toronto to get married. Rather hook-up than get hitched? There are many choices for gay, lesbian and mixed nightclubs, queer theatre, fetish and circuit parties, festivals, popular patios, coffee shops, drag havens, leather bars, lodgings and saunas. These essentials are concentrated near the famed Church Street Village or in Queen Street West, featuring many LGBT-specific establishments: Its like an outdoor gay mall. The “Village” beat easily mixes with a straight vibe over to Yonge Street or down to the 'College West' & historic 'Cabbage Town' neighborhoods. You'll find various interpretations of urban cool. Toronto's Entertainment District offers endless activities including the Skyline-famous CN tower, St. Lawrence & Kensington Markets, or a ferry-ride to Toronto Islands for cycling and sun worshipping on numerous beaches. If you're not shy, hike to the far end of Hanlan's Point – for clothing optional tanning. Special events are celebrated year round. Toronto's worldrenowned Pride Week Weekend attracts an estimated one million attendees. Your choices of museums, attractions, shops, bars, restaurants and lodging in this authentic melting pot are neverending. If you’re the type who appreciates beauty, culture and diversity, you’ll be sure to fall in love with Toronto.

A Letter...

(Church Street Community Center)

Having experienced the wonders of Toronto for many years, mostly for business purposes, I’m just now beginning to appreciate the tourist side of the city and many of the secret delights that the area holds. The gay village is changing with the opening of new bars and restaurants. New Markers, are in place designating the entry to the “Gay Village”. A walk up or down Church Street often finds men holding hands. Queen West is booming with new lofts becoming available. The Gladstone Hotel holds a permanent art exhibit of gay artists on the upper floors. Downtown Toronto is filled with great hotels where luxury awaits you and affordable prices. Theatres are close by and restaurant and entertainment venues beckon. Many museums and college buildings dot the landscape. Newly discovered, by me, are the beaches east of the city, where you can frolic in the cool waters of Lake Ontario. No sharks and plenty of eye candy. Come to Toronto, have fun, you’ll want to return again. Check our new and improved website www.gayosphere.com for all your travel needs and dreams around the world.

On behalf of our members and the Church and Wellesley Village community, welcome to Toronto! The 519 has been the hub of Toronto’s diverse downtown LGBTQ community since 1975; over 50,000 people visit The Centre every year to meet, participate and celebrate together. Located in the heart of Toronto’s LGBTQ village, The 519 is part of a vibrant community of restaurants, shops and other businesses working together to build a welcoming, healthy neighbourhood community in the centre of our diverse City. As a public-private partnership of the City of Toronto, The 519 and its programs and services are a testament to what can happen when a city like Toronto works in partnership with the local community to effect change. From summer movie nights in the park and Pride in the Green Space on Church to programs for LGBTQ seniors, families or trans youth, The 519 has always worked with our members to develop programs that meet emerging community needs. We’re glad to welcome you to Toronto and hope you’ll spend some time in our Village. If you have any questions while you’re here, drop by The Centre and speak with one of our staff or volunteers, we’d love to meet you!

Getting Here

Toronto City Overview

s one of North America’s biggest cities, Toronto is easily accessible by air, rail and automobile. About five million Canadian residents live within an hours drive and 60 percent of the U.S. population is within a 90-minute flight. By Air: Located just west of the city, Pearson International Airport is one of the world’s busiest in terms of passenger traffic with over 65 different airlines serving it. Regional flights are also available from Toronto City Centre Airport which is located on an island in Toronto Harbour. Toronto is a hub for Air Canada with a wide variety of domestic, US and International connections. Porter Airlines is great for Regional Flights; WestJest and AirCanada are also great Canadian carriers. A flight from New York or Chicago is only about 1 hr, 30 min. By Rail: Toronto is served by the VIA Rail System with access to all rail service throughout Canada and connection to Amtrak in the United States through Niagara Falls, New York. GO Train is also a great alternative to get around some parts of Ontario. After arriving at Union Station in the heart of downtown Toronto visitors can connect to the subway (called TTC) by underground tunnel. By Road: Several highways, including Highways 2, 401, 407 and the Queen Elizabeth Way, link surrounding cities to Toronto. The nearest Canada-U.S. border crossings are at Niagara Falls, Fort Erie and Windsor.

Ottawa: Canada’s capital is close to culture and near to nature... ttawa is a bilingual, walkable city that offers an eclectic mix of cultural attractions and events, outdoor adventure and culinary hot spots. Near Parliament Hill, Canada’s seat of government, you’ll find the Supreme Court of Canada (where same-sex marriage was debated) as well as the best in Canadian culture including the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum and the National Arts Centre, a multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre—one of the largest in the world. Between culture stops, experience the Rideau Canal, Ontario’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. In spring, summer or fall, cruise or rent a bike along this iconic waterway. In winter, the Rideau Canal turns into the world’s largest outdoor skating rink, as designated by Guinness World Records, stretching 7.8 km (4.8 miles) through downtown Ottawa. Looking for more outdoor adventure? Head for the nearby Gatineau Hills for some hiking, cycling, canoeing, zip-lining, skiing or snow-shoeing– all just a 15-minute drive from downtown. The ByWard Market is one of the oldest and largest farmers’ markets in Canada. This four-block-by-four-block neighbourhood has two personalities. By day, with over 260 farmer and artisan stands and funky boutiques and shops, it’s bustling with visitors and locals alike. By night, it’s Ottawa’s entertainment district, filled with great restaurants, clubs, and bistros. For more information visit: www.ottawatourism.ca/lgbt
