Your Games
1. Prepare:
2. Tinker:
• bottle caps (various colours) • stick (we used a stick found on the autumn walk) • magnetic tape • string • container (you can use a box or a bowl)
• glue a piece of magnetic tape to each bottle cap • tie the string to the stick • glue the magnetic tape to the end of the stick • put the caps into the container
3. Play: It's time to start fishing. In this game, just like in the fairy tale, the gold fish makes your wishes come true – you just need to catch it! Success? Now say your wish, and the next player will have to fulfil it. You can modify this game by attaching cards with tasks to each cap. You'll have some extra fun while fishing.
1. Prepare: -
plastic bottle balloon / rubber glove finger soft ball cups
2. Tinker:
3. Play:
- cut off the upper part of the bottle
Put the cups on the floor and shoot. Try to hit as many as possible in one go.
- put the rubber tip on the bottle mouth
1. Prepare:
2. Tinker:
3. Play:
• skewer sticks • paints (various colours)
• paint the sticks • dry them
You'll have to be patient. Practice strong will, dexterity and focus. Spread the jack-straws on the table. Gather as many of them as possible so as not to touch the others. Be careful – little lack of attention may cost you losing your turn. The winner is the one to collect the most jack-straws.
1. Prepare: • a few foam sheets (or plain colour papers) • wallpaper knife / children: scissors
2. Tinker: • create a template – cut the patterns you have imagined out of each sheet
3. Play: Put one sheet over another and watch how the picture changes. You can create fantastic pictures. See how many different pictures you can create using a few templates.
1. Prepare: • cork table • push-pins • colour rubber bands
2. Tinker: • put the push-pins onto the cork table
3. Play: Create spatial pictures – letters, mathematical figures, flowers, houses and other designs. Play with shape and colour. Take the rubbers bands and put them over the pins horizontally, vertically or diagonally, thus creating spatial images There are no limits in this game.
1. Prepare:
2. Tinker:
• • •
•
lego playing board lego blocks small ball
3. Play: Balance the ball, moving it from start to finish. Each time you can rebuild the labyrinth and play once again – going up the level.
attach the blocks to the board, arranging them in a labyrinth
3. Play: Combine traditional draughts with learning. Put the bottle caps on the board, move like inn traditional draughts - diagonally. When you get to the field with text, draw a yellow, red or blue card and answer the question. A wrong answer makes you lose your turn and stay on the same field. The right answer lets you continue the game. On the pieces of paper you can write questions within the subject your kid is interested in.
1. Prepare: • • • • • •
colour bristol board colour sticky paper colour paper (2 sheets of red, blue and green) 16 bottle caps (8 of each colour) felt-pen -ruler
2. Tinker: • draw a chess board on the bristol (64 squares) • glue colour paper to the half of the squares (so as to make a chess board) • divide the colour paper into smaller pieces • assign a subject to each colour, e.g. red – maths, green – English, yellow – Polish • write orders on the chess board fields of your choice – “draw a red card.” “draw a blue card,” “draw a yellow card”
1. Prepare:
2. Tinker:
• paper towel tube • 4 rectangular cardboards (here cardboard cover of the colour paper block) • a pen / felt-pen • washi tape / colour paper
• glue washi tape or colour paper over the towel tube • glue the arrow that will show where to put the answers • glue colour paper to the cardboard rectangles • attach the cardboards, thus making rings a little bigger than the paper tower tube's diameter (so as it is possible to twist them, but they couldn't move) • find the topic of the puzzles, e.g. animals, plants, mathematical operations, geography etc. Write the puzzles on the rings.
3. Play: The first ring sets the topic, the other rings finish the topic, e.g. the category of animals, the first ring: brown bear. The other answers must be related to the main topic: IÂ eat fish and honey, IÂ live in the forest, IÂ hibernate in winter. If all the rings are turned in the right way, the player wins.
1. Prepare:
2. Tinker:

thin drinking straws plasticine
make a number of colour balls from plasticine – they will make bonds of our construction
3. Play: Combine straws using the colour balls. Create spatial constructions. You can learn what atoms are and make a few models.
1. Prepare: •
• • • • • •
3 containers of different sizes (we used empty paint containers) colour papers for packing presents glue string colour tapes 2 wooden sticks scissors
2. Tinker: • • •
•
wash and dry the containers cover each container with colour paper (glue it) put the paper on the cover, bend and tie the string or colour tap around it cut off the excess of paper alongside
3. Play: Playing drums is a real shot of energy and a good opportunity to relieve emotions in a creative way. It develops the sense of rhythm, opens to music and relaxes. Make a real orchestra

Questio nnaire • EVERYTHING STARTED… during holidays in Gotland. I love Gotland – its simple quiet charm. It inspired me and gave me the strength to change my life. I wanted to make my own island here – a nice uncomplicated world. I thought I must start working in harmony with myself, doing what I can do and like doing. As soon as I returned, I quit my job and bought 20 skeins of cotton. • MY WORKS… they are not wacky at all. I like creating things that are nice in a simple way. Fluffy. • THE BIGGEST SATISFACTION... is when a kid grabs my toy and won't let it go. And then I get an email from the mother in which she is writing how she is happy with the kid's joy. • WHAT INSPIRES ME… is children's ideas. Especially my 6-year-old daughter gives me incredible ideas. And consequently demands their release. • I ADMIRE… my newly- met friend who half a year ago started to learn to sew, and today is successfully selling her masterpieces – simple and beautiful, creative and sewn with passion. • THE NEAREST PLANS… not so long ago I found a real treasure – a draft of a wooden toy from the childhood made by my grandpa. He could make real wonders. That toy is no longer around, but basing on the draft I will try to recreate it for my children. • WHAT I'M DREAMING ABOUT… is a house on Gotland with a workshop and a shop in the barn. • IN A FREE TIME… I grow up to the art of doing nothing. • IN MY CHILDHOOD… I used to hide under my mum's skirt and would fall asleep with the sewing machine in the background. • THE WORLD OF A CHILD… is much closer to the adults' world than it seems. phot. private archives

Questio nnaire • EVERYTHING STARTED… with our kids, Paulina's daughters to be more precise, who would take her clothes out of the wardrobe and didn't want to give them back – we made up our minds to design clothes that will be very similar, and which can be worn by the mum and the child. • OUR BRAND… lives parallelly with our private life – it is a small family company, which our men, children, friends and Coco the dog ;) help to run. We design and make clothes for women and children (aged 2 to 14). • OUR COLLECTION… is a continuation of our fascination with designs and drawings that can be transformed onto clothes – this time they are autumn raindrops and the familiar motif of the dog, and all that combined with the colours characteristic for our clothes – delicate pastels, deep greys, dull powder pink and black. • WHAT INSPIRES US… is our kids, our everyday talks, travels, films, photography. • BRANDS THAT WE VALUE / ADMIRE… children ones are too numerous to list; the adult ones - Stella McCartney, Victoria Beckham, WoodWood. • COMPETITION… motivates, in the positive meaning! We like to swap clothes with other brands :). • THE NEAREST PLANS… smoothing our workshop in beloved Powiśle, at 44 Rozbrat Street, from where we have a wonderful view onto the park. • WE ARE DREAMING ABOUT… long inspiring relaxing journey :). • IN OUR FREE TIME… we design interiors (Paulina), take photos (Judyta), look to our kids, husbands, friends and dog :). • IN THE CHILDHOOD… we climbed trees and fought with our brothers! • THE WORLD OF A CHILD… means unlimited imagination, brimming intelligence and extra sense of humour!

kwestionariusz • EVERYTHING STARTED…
in my childhood. I drew beautifully, I kept drawing animals. I even had a plan of selling posters with sketched teddies. The shop was to be situated on the ground floor balcony.
•

MY ILLUSTRATIONS…
are divided into two groups. In some I want to keep minimalism so that they were made of simple shapes and lines. The other group is called patterned. It's the one in which the form is lost because of numerous shapes and details. Sometimes it is hard for me to decide which form to use in a particular project. THE BIGGEST SATISFACTION...
is for me the moment when during workshops I am approached by a child with one of the books I illustrated and starts talking about themselves. If they come with “M.O.D.A.” they tell me how they choose clothes themselves, or they design them on a piece of paper and sew them along with their mums. If it's “Lala Lolka” it happens that a boy comes up and says he plays with dolls himself, adding, “...And anyway, it's great you've written such a book!”. WHAT INSPIRES ME…
are many things and phenomena, both from the past and surrounding me. The biggest fun for me is combining those elements in my illustrations. Sometimes my friends appear in them, beside them their favourite toys from their childhood, or those I have always wanted to have. I ADMIRE…
illustrators who do their work using traditional techniques, without the interference of the computer. Many of
them are using those techniques in a surprising modern way. • THE NEAREST PLANS…
I have too many plans. The most important is to manage to fulfil them. I have a few ideas for books I would like to release. Beside that, I am still thinking of using illustrations in new areas – interiors and textiles. Next to my desk there are two supports – they keep looking at me as if asking when I am planning to use them at last. For a long time I have wanted to come back to painting.
• I AM DREAMING ABOUT…
getting out of the urge that prevents me from careless release of my own projects. There are definitely not enough hours in a day.
• IN MY FREE TIME…
when I have to take a break from work, I walk. It's best to take a stroll in the woods, in the mushroom season, with a basket and a pocket knife. Mushroom picking is one of the favourite reminiscences from my childhood that I have managed to recreate in my mind day by day.
• IN MY CHILDHOOD…
beside mushroom picking I loved to go to the country. I wanted to become a farmer or a vet very much. I loved animals, and I expressed that love painting them.
• THE WORLD OF A CHILD…
from the time's perspective seems carefree for each adult, which is often mistaken for trivial, but small dramas are dramas after all. My experience shows that childhood determines many decisions of adults. I still draw, live in the country. I still accomplish my little plans – even those of the posters.

„
We look at picture-books for the second time. In the previous issue of FUNpik we started looking for connections that occur within those particular books that are not easy to assign to a certain literal genre and art convention. We started with a very important combination of the word and picture by their mutual completion, relation and equal role in conveying the author's thoughts. This time, let's look at another relation. That intangible one that forms between the author and the reader, when they meet on the pages of the picture-book. For a picture-book is an intelligent book. It can be said that through the way the author conjures up such a book, they create artificial intelligence. Paper, rectangular artificial intelligence. Such a book says what the reader reads in it, constantly transforms, becomes more shallow or deeper, grows and becomes smaller. The message is not said here straightforwardly, there is no moral. The story can stimulate, however, the continuation that is made in our heads. One may feel disappointed, '”but what is this book about in fact, what happened is good or bad? How is my child supposed to learn anything from it?” Someone else will say, “What a beautiful book about happiness!” Someone other will say, “It is the saddest book of the world”.
The answer to the second question of the first “someone” is worth giving. Picture-books are very often created with the meeting of the child and their parent in mind. Thanks to the fact that the book does not impose answers, the parent reading it along with the child, can do two things. Firstly, listen and observe the child's reactions, teach them independent thinking and interpretation. Ask, talk and check what and how the young reader understands. Secondly, they can share their perception, the view on what was described in the book, guide, underline what seems important to them. In this way, the book does not press into heads what the author imposes, and what can become the story of many meanings, which are decided by – a young or an adult – reader. Similarly like the last time, let's look into the examples from books. The favourite part. I reach for the shelf and choose books. It is such a funny coincidence that all of them are delicate and beige on the cover. Frugal inside and thought-over in their text layer, unusually neat and well made in graphics. Their authors are renown creators, masters of their field. It is not easy to create artificial intelligence in the form of books, it sometimes succeeds thoroughly, sometimes only symbolically. Yet the examples I have chosen are quintessential of what a picture-book is..
"Duck, Death and the Tulip" Wolfa Erlbrucha,
Hokus Pokus Publishing House, 2008 The beginning is the hardest. “Duck, Death and the Tulip” by Wolf Erlbruch. It can be referred to as a German picture-book classic. Death accompanies Duck since its birth. At some point Duck notices its presence, and Death tries to tame it slowly. “When she lost the sight of him, she almost became sad. But life takes care of that”. The book, without giving an answer, touches one of the most difficult topics. Not all parents will want to give it to their child and it's their right to do so. It has been classified for kids over 10 with a reason, when the reading requires an adult to participate. Those bald and confident will go through it with their kids. Some of us will buy it for ourselves, read carefully, get sad just like Duck seeing the empty pond and will never show it to their kid. Maybe when he or she grows up, they will reach for it themselves and appreciate, or maybe not. Anyway, it's gorgeous it was created. The humbleness with which it tells about death using words and pictures is necessary..
"Trouble"
Iwona Chmielewska, Wytwórnia Publishing House, 2012 The next book is “Kłopot” (Trouble) by Iwona Chmielewska, the author specializing in telling about usual and unusual things using ultimate “picture-words.” She has won many important prizes, is a picture book icon in Korea and a university teacher, and an appreciated author in Poland. “Trouble” is the first book about shapes published in this country from the Korean series by Iwona Chmielewska. The young heroine burns, by chance, a keepsake tablecloth with the iron. Everything she can see is an awful stain whose shape continues to tell the story of the worried girl. The book is based on imagination, on playing image interpretations, and at the same time empathy in perceiving daily pro-
blems from a child's perspective. Is it a book about burnt iron stain, or imagination? Or about care, or family tradition? Or how to deal with troubles? It depends on us, the readers. We can choose. It can be about it all at the same time. Each time it may be about one of those things and many more. It can be something else for the kid, and else for the parent, teach each of them in many ways. One thing is certain, this book teaches visual intelligence, trains creativity, inspires.
"Too Late"
Giovanny Zomboli, Camilli Engman, Entliczek Publishing House, 2011 “Too Late” - created by Italian writer Giovanna Zombola and with graphics by Swedish illustrator Camilla Engman, is the only book that is not one author's vision on the whole, but the result of cooperation. Despite all the problems resulting from it, the effect is wonderful. The illustrator has beautifully read the text and created around it a unique world that is living its own life so near. The slow, lethargic rhythm of the words and unusual atmosphere of softly coloured illustrations create a beautiful lullaby. A lullaby about someone who does not want to go to sleep yet. As usual, when we close the book we won't answer the question so easily – what did the book tell us. It may be a book about childhood and longing for incredible adventures. Or about magic of dreams that sometimes starts working just before falling asleep. Sometimes it is a good way to lull the kid reading the repeated lines slowly, or sometimes to trigger his or her imagination, a machine that creates beautiful dreams adults do not dream so often.
Three beautiful books. Millions of ways to read them. Billions of thoughts, connections, ideas while reading them. No explicit message. Each time a different talk between the author and the reader. Another possible talk is the one between the parent and the kid. What's more, after some time, basing on the same book, there is a possibility of a totally new talk between the very same parent and kid. It's only possible in picture books! The relation between the word and the picture and the “talk between the author and the reader already presented. In the last part that will appear in the next issue, I will tell you about another connection. About the relations of all the physical features of the book and its message.

Frozen bananas in chocolate coating! It's a fantastic dessert which is most pleasurable to make accompanied by youngster helpers. It's enough to get a few bananas, a few sticks, a handful of colour hundreds and thousands, and, it's a must, a lot of good chocolate. The rest is up to our imagination!
Ingredients: • 2-3 bananas • a few wooden sticks (e.g. skewers) • 1 bar of white chocolate + 1 spoonful oil • 1 bar of dark chocolate + 1 teaspoonful oil • a handful of colour hundreds and thousands And here how to make it: 1. Peel the bananas, cut in half and put them on the sticks. Place it in the freezer overnight. 2. On the other day, melt the chocolate over steam with oil. Take the frozen bananas out of the freezer and dip in the hot chocolate. Sprinkle with hundreds and thousands. Wait a moment till the chocolate gets harder, and then eat!

A traditional dish in a lighter opening – with addition of natural yoghurt instead of cream. Rabbit dish is a wonderful idea for a family dinner. It is delicate white meat with low cholesterol content and high protein content. It is recommended to allergic children. It tastes delicious in creamy sauce with your favourite pasta.

ROM HOME BAKERY Apple and Pear Mini tarts Ingredients (13 cm in diameter or for 1 big tart): Pastry: • 2 glasses flour, additionally flour to spread • 180 g cold butter finely chopped • 2 yolks • 2 spoonful sugar Stuffing: • 3 middle apples (in autumn it's best to use russet apple) • 2 middle pears (I recommend juicy type of Clapp's pear) • 3 spoonful sugar • ½ teaspoonful cinnamon
phot. Kuchnia Nastrojowa
„
Crunchy mini tarts with delicious with delicious golden brown crumble on top. In autumn they taste delicious with apple-pear topping. They will do really well with sourish russet apples and juicy Clapp's pears. Mini tarts are scrumptious when still hot, eaten straight from the baking pans. Young foodies will appreciate them sprinkled with powdered sugar.
„
phot. Kuchnia Nastrojowa
Place the ingredients for the pastry in a big bowl and quickly knead into a ball. Cover with food wrap and put into the fridge for at least half an hour. Preheat the oven to 180°C and prepare the topping for the tarts. Rinse the apples and pears , peel and remove seeds. Grate half the fruit, chop the other half into 1 cm cubes. Add sugar and cinnamon, stir. Take the pastry out of the fridge and divide into 4 parts. Roll each on a baking paper (spread flour if necessary). Coat the tart forms with it, make a ball of the remains and put aside. Prick the mini tarts with a fork – thanks to it the pastry won't bubble up while baking and put into the oven for 10 minutes. Take out the forms and fill them with topping. Grate the remains of the pastry over the forms – it will make crunchy crumbles. Bake for 30 minutes, after that take out of the oven. When cooled, you can put them on the plates. Enjoy!
DESSERT TIME Home-made raspberry kissel Ingredients (Dessert for 2-4 persons): • 2 big cups (250 ml) of raspberries (fresh or frozen) • 2 big cups water • 2 -3 spoonful sugar • 2 spoonful potato starch • a few raspberries and mint leaves to decorate

Pour into bowls, decorate with fresh raspberries and a mint leaf. Enjoy! phot. Kuchnia Nastrojowa

It's dessert everyone remembers from their childhood. It won't take much more time than preparing the commercial one from a bag, but it tastes much much better. Instead of raspberries you can use any fruit of your choice, seasonal or frozen. It is delicious both hot and cold.
