FUTURE CHAMPIONS GOLF MAGAZINE

Dear Junior Golf Community,

It’s hard to believe this is already our 20th year operating Future Champions Golf programs and the start of our 16th full year hosting multi day golf tournaments. Thank you all for your support of the Tour and the programs that we offer. 2023 looks to be an exciting year of growth on all levels of the Tour. We are expanding Tournament Operations in other regions of the United States. We have partnered with more than 30 other tours around the world for qualifying events to bring the best players in the world to the 15th Annual FCG Callaway World Junior Golf Championship that will be played July 17-19, 2023. We are excited to announce this year’s event will feature 850 junior golfers ages 7-18 from over 50 countries and will be played on 12 Championship Golf Courses. We will also have a new host hotel for this year’s event.

Other exciting things to note is the return of all of our FCG World Series Events with several new events including an event at the #1 course in Arkansas. We have established the FCG Iconic Ocean Series that will feature our best world series events held at courses along the ocean. Stay tuned for more about that exciting event.

Also this year we are starting the FCG International Team Championship that will be played a few days prior to the start of the FCG International Championship. Did you know the FCG international is the largest annual OPEN event in junior golf? This means you can just sign up and play in one of the world’s largest and most exciting world events in junior golf. You do however need to meet the scoring requirements listed on the website.

There is so much more to talk about but we will announce more in future emails and on our blog and social media. Stay connected with us on the blog, here in our monthly magazine, and our new podcast which kicks off later this month again for 2023! If you have any questions or comments please contact us anytime. We want to be your favorite junior golf and college golf program.

All the best!

NATIONAL TOUR OREGON SPRING CLASSIC

April 22-23, 2023 // Register Here >

The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club - ALOHA,

Come April 22 & 23, The Reserve Vineyard and Golf Club will once again be the host of the FCG National Tour. The region’s premiere golf destination has had its fairways graced by some of the greatest golf icons of all time. Nicklaus, Palmer, Watson, Trevino, Couples and Mickelson are just a few names who have left their mark here. Since its opening in 1997, the course has hosted the Peter Jacobsen Fred Meyer Challenge, the JELD-WEN Tradition and the Umpqua Bank Challenge.

The facility boasts two distinctly different championship courses, The North Course and The South Course. Designed by Bob Cupp, The North Course plays like it should be amongst the dunes of the Oregon Coast. The par 72 6,840-yard link-styled layout features undulating grass mounds on the fairways with challenging greens. Bunkers throughout are strategically placed to make you stop and think your way around the course.

OR

The South Course, which was designed by former PGA Tour player John Fought is just one of the many gems he has built in the Pacific Northwest. It is a traditional course with tree-lined holes, 60 bunkers and naturally rolling fairways that requires a strategy to always be on your toes to navigate your way around the course. The par 72 plays longer than The North that measures up to 7,172 yards which includes a 605-yard par 5.

Both courses, like many in the Pacific Northwest, is lushly green and distractedly beautiful. It’s really easy to forget that you’re playing golf because of the relaxing views which add to the challenge for golfers of all levels. The Reserve Vineyard and Golf Club is definitely a stop to make if you’re looking to golf in the Portland area.

Smeal’s Coaching Tips

HOW’S YOUR SHORT GAME STACK UP AGAINST YOUR COMPETITION?

First off, who is your competition? If you want to be the best I would recommend first studying the players you want to compete against in the future, like PGA and LPGA Tour players. Their short games are amazing, some much better than others, but all are pretty good to be playing at that level. Well how did they get there?

WORK ETHIC - At some point you have to realize if you want to be great at something you have to put in the work. I used to drive 35 minutes from Poway to Singing Hills GC to work on my short game. Those sessions would usually start at 7am and would go til after 1pm on weekends. That was strictly working on pitching and chipping. I recommend adding as much short game practice to your schedule as you can fit in each week. After some time you will see a huge change in your game. Practice the technique of all the shots you will face in competition and end each session with some kind of competition either with yourself or other players. You have to test what you have been working on to see if it is ready for competition. Then you have to take it onto the course and succeed out there, outside of a competition. Then you take it to the competition. When you start to hit the shots you like and see some success that will lead to a higher level of confidence and trust in your abilities. You can do it!

KNOWLEDGE - Work with your coach or short game specialist on improving all areas of your short game. It is also great to watch PGA and LPGA Tour events and watch the shots the players hit and how they do it. You can also view short game shots on You Tube and study their technique. You need all the shots. You need to know how to chip with every club in your bag. I tell all my students to spend some time (especially youth) to learn how to chip with every club in your bag. You want to know how they all work so you are ready for whatever challenge faces you. I have chipped with a 4 iron in competition!

UNDERSTAND SHORT GAME STAT

TRACKING - There are a ton of different apps you can use or you can chart your own results. You want to have a detailed picture of your short game in competition for yourself and to also share with your coach. Here is a link to all the stats the PGA Tour tracks for players: https://www.pgatour.com/stats/ around-green

Create your own stats and elevate your game this spring!

PAR 3 COURSES: We know you are elite! Well maybe, but please never quit playing short courses. I grew up at Oaks North, an executive course in Rancho Bernardo with a par of 60. Several great players grew up at this course over the years and many are on the PGA and LPGA Tour now, from Charley Hoffman to Becky Lucidi and tons of Division 1 players. Short courses give you a chance to really work on your short game and scoring.

I hope this helps get you inspired to work more on your short game this spring!

JIMMY’S MULLIGAN

Our lives are shaped by the adversity and challenges we face but our spirit is defined by how we handle adversity and challenges. The life of Jimmy McKeon is one of much adversity and challenge but the spirit of Jimmy McKeon is one of a champion and an example that we can all learn from. We hear many cliches as we go through life that are meant to help us overcome our own challenges and adversity. “It is not how many times you get knocked down, but how many times you get back up.” And while cliches such as that can help us in times of struggle, actually knowing and witnessing someone handle those challenges has an even greater impact.

Jimmy McKeon is the oldest of Nancy and Jim McKeon’s two sons. At an early age he took a liking to his father’s love and participation in sports. Early signs pointed to a promising athletic life, not atypical of boys who are sons of “sports guys.” Unfortunately, Jimmy’s path was dramatically altered when he was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma at age five. This was a very serious form of the beast we know as cancer that impacts the brain and consequently most of the body’s functions. The treatment is very complicated and risky. The combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation had a tremendous physical impact. After the initial surgery, Jimmy was virtually paralyzed and had to relearn even the most basic functions such as swallowing, rolling over and talking. One can not imagine how grueling the days, months and years that followed were.

It was during those years of uncertainty, filled with dozens of medical procedures, that would cause even the most optimistic among us to have doubts and frustration that Jimmy’s spirit shown through. Jimmy McKeon is not a complainer. What Jimmy McKeon is, however, is a champion armed with a spirit that is marked by incredible maturity, patience, and kindness. It is this spirit that has been so inspiration-

al to the literally hundreds of lives that Jimmy has touched. Beginning with his loving and supportive family and extending to his friends and those who have crossed his path often through his brother Ryan’s athletic teams, Jimmy’s spirit is an inspiration and an example for how to handle challenges and adversity.

From Jimmy - My journey started in 2004 when I was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma at 5 years of age. After the surgery, I couldn’t move and had to relearn the most basic functions such as, swallowing, rolling over and talking. Those days were grueling. I couldn’t communicate with my parents because I couldn’t speak. My family and friends were a great support team.

For the entire year after my surgery I was sequestered to a bed pretty much 24/7. After that first year my recovery was progressing and this meant I could go home. After I got reacquainted with life at home, I met Jaclyn and the Murphy family. I was also introduced to Friends of Jaclyn (FOJ) and I loved the cause. I have been working with Denis and FOJ to help kids find a collegiate or high school sports team to support them throughout their fight.

I’m now 24 years old and I ’d like to think I have contributed to changing the lives of those around me and hope I can help others that are going through the battle against the beast. I’ve tried to set an example of perseverance and having a mindset to overcoming obstacles while inspiring those around me.

I have always been inspired by a quote from the late, great Jim Valvano “Cancer can take away all of my physical abilities. It cannot touch my mind, it cannot touch my heart, and it cannot touch my soul.” It’s my mission that my story and my efforts can motivate and inspire others to Never Give Up. New definition of a MULLIGAN!

TOURNAMENT EXEMPTIONS NOW AVAILABLE FOR THE ELITE INVITATIONAL

The following events will have exemptions available for the winners into the Elite Invitational later in 2023 for the Boys and Girls 15-18 Divisions.

• FCG CABO WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP

• FCG GLOBAL CUP

• FCG CALLAWAY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

• ADDITIONALLY THE TOP 3 FINISHERS AT THE 2023 ELITE INVITATIONAL WILL EARN AN EXEMPTION INTO THE 2024 FCG CALLAWAY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

ABOUT THE ELITE INVITATIONAL

The Elite Invitational was founded in 2020 by Mason Carmel. A former standout junior golfer, Mason is now a teaching professional instructing junior, collegiate, and professional golfers worldwide. After injuries prevented Mason from pursuing a playing career of his own, he wanted to give back to the game he loves. Drawing on his own experiences, he created a high-level, invitational tournament. The event gives junior golfers the ability to showcase their skills in competitive conditions similar to those they will encounter as their careers progress. With a unique selection process based on a player’s graduating year instead of a player’s age, the tournament poses a different set of challenges than many other junior competitions. This highly ranked event will challenge the best around the world. By trying to emulate PGA/LPGA tour course set-ups, players will get a preview of the higher standard they will encounter as their careers develop and an opportunity to lay the foundation of their legacies. We look forward to hosting you and your family this November.

REEVALUATING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE “WELL-ROUNDED”

WHY STRIVING TO BE “WELL-ROUNDED” SHOULD NOT BE THE GOAL

“Well-Rounded” vs. “Pointy” Applicants:

In the spirit of college admissions decisions coming out, let’s discuss the concept of well-rounded applicants versus well-rounded classes. This is a topic that I address often with clients, and many families ask the question, “what kind of extracurricular activities and community service should my son or daughter prioritize?”

In a world where there is a ton of pressure from classmates, high school counselors, parents, other parents, and the internet telling you to DO MORE, I’m here to tell you to be more intentional about where you are spending your time. As junior golfers, you are already investing heavily in your time on the golf course and have multiple weekends per month earmarked for competition. If you are specializing in golf or another sport, you are likely a different kind of applicant than many of your high school friends who don’t intend to play college athletics. If you are being supported by a college coach through the admissions office, then you are already a “pointy” applicant because you have specialized in something in a way that will take up a spot in the admissions class. According to an article by College Express, “to be ‘pointy’ is to be truly invested in your passion, whether it’s a sport, activity, or idea. Pointy students go deep into their ‘spike,’ arrange all their other extracurriculars around this, and are able to articulate their narrative around it in their college application.”

Do colleges recruit different kinds of students to round out their classes?

College admissions offices are looking to create “well-rounded” classes, rather than fill their classes with students who have the exact same resume. They need a cellist for the school orchestra, a kicker for the football team, drama majors to field the casts for their plays, and even 2-3 college golfers who will make up the freshmen class for the golf team.

Think about the types of activities where you are spending your time. Are you passionate about them? Would you be excited to speak to an alumni interviewer about said activities? Are you just doing them for the sake of filling your resume? These are important considerations as you decide how to designate your time in 2023. If you are younger and still aren’t sure how you are going to be spending your time outside of school and golf, think about the things that make you happy, and the activities where you have genuine interest. Pursue your passions and listen to that inner voice. I encourage my younger students (2027s, 2026s, and 2025s) to stop and think about the subjects that bring them the most joy and dig deeper into the “why”.

There is a lot of pressure to be like everyone else and do all the things, but wouldn’t you rather be GOOD at a few things than mediocre at everything?

BOYS COLLEGE PREP Nick Fry

Class of 2024

Talking about starting the new year with a bang, Nick did just that! Despite the unsettling weather of January that plagued the west coast, He played his first event in 2023 at the FCG Collegiate Season Opener shooting a 2-day total 145. This was good enough to secure a solo 3rd place. Next stop was the rain shortened FCG National Tour Spring Series Opener where he posted a -2, 70 T2. The final stop for in January was the FCG National Tour San Marcos Open. Under tough conditions, his 2-daay total +5, 147 was enough to claim the championship. Three events with two Top 3 and Champion in one, earns Nick the January FCG Player of the Month.

GIRLS COLLEGE PREP Yeonju An

At the FCG National Tour San Marcos Open, Yeonju finished her first round sitting as the overnight leader with a 2-stroke lead after shooting an even par 72. On the second and final day, she went out and dropped 5 birdies and an eagle. Unfortunately the round wasn’t bogey free so some of the strokes were offset but managed to still post a -2, 70 for a 2-day total of 142. Good enough to take the championship by 7-strokes. Great play under the tough conditions gives Yeonju the right to claim the title of January FCG Player of the Month.

A DISTURBING TREND

Unsportsmanlike conduct is no longer a penalty you see in a football game. In fact, it has nothing to do with the player. In the past year we’ve heard and seen parents’ brawl or become unruly at junior high school sports games. Baseball, basketball and now even golf. To the point where we had to ask some spectators to leave the course. Security also had to be called at a couple of events recently as well, which is very unfortunate.

With pressures of college recruiting, parents are all trying to find that extra edge to get their golfer exposed to the coaches. For many, they worry about the results and especially the rankings of the player. Not to say that those aren’t important but, as the old saying goes, “Focus on the result, you forget the process. Focus on the process, you get the result.” We’ve seen an uptick of players withdrawing from tournaments when they score badly on the first day. Instead of learning how to persevere and battle through. The message learned is to quit when it doesn’t go your way.

Another example is that the course and weather conditions must be perfect. Instead of learning to compete in those adverse situations they more than likely

make their players withdraw. Following cues from baseball, hand signals are also prevalent on the course or just outright talking to players when they are playing. The rules no matter what tour the junior golfer plays, spectators are not to talk or walk with players. This unfortunately is not always the case and players are well aware of what spectators should do and not do. They don’t want to run the risk of being penalized.

As a parent myself, I know that we only want the best for our children. We try to nurture, teach and protect our children the best we can. But like anything else, there is a place and time for it. The best judgement must be made so that our children can observe and learn from our actions. Speaking of “observe”, a golf course is built on acres of land so it is generally hard to see everyone out there. So, one of the things to keep in mind as you’re out there spectating, always be aware that a college coach could be out there watching. Or even a potential player sponsor. Even though you may not see them, they may see you.

I am only speaking about a few parents but unfortunately they stand out. The majority of spectators are fantastic and follow the etiquette and protocols of the tours and we graciously thank you for that.
