Foreword

I

have admired Kenro Izu’s sublime photography of sacred places and his book, Passage to Angkor. During a trip to Cambodia, I had a chance to visit the Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) that Kenro and Friends Without A Border founded in Siem Reap. There, I saw very ill infants and children being given extensive care, by a wonderful staff, free of charge to their families. Being in that environment reminded me that the children I had encountered, while photographing in rural villages in Southeast Asia, had many things in common. They live in thatched huts not fully protected from the elements or disease-carrying insects and rodents. Their homes don’t have electricity, fresh water, or bathrooms. They don’t eat a varied and consistent diet. These conditions among others can lead to malnutrition, dehydration, and disease. When I spent time in villages surrounded by curious, rambunctious youngsters, the obvious outward signs of poor health in the children were chronic coughs, consistently runny noses, lethargy, and evidence of diarrhea in the bushes… all symptoms of much larger health concerns. The sick girls and boys, whose families are able to bring them to the AHC for treatment, often traveling great distances, are the lucky ones. Last year, I had the honor of finally meeting Kenro at the Friends Visitor Center of the new Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Luang Prabang, which opened in February 2015. There was great excitement and anticipation as the building was being completed, staff trained, and medical equipment donated and installed. Children in Lao are now receiving vital medical care that was never available to them before. As you consider these beautiful photographs, donated by the photographic community, to add to your collection or as a first-time buyer, remember that the proceeds from this auction directly benefit the children’s hospitals in Siem Reap and Luang Prabang. Be generous. Bid high and bid often!

Inaugural Artist of the Year Award: Elliott Erwitt

E

ven those who may not be familiar with the names of photographers must have come across images taken by Elliott Erwitt. Known for his wit, poetic style, and humanistic sensibilities, Erwitt has created many iconic images familiar to the public.

Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian émigrés, Erwitt spent his formative years in Milan before immigrating to the U.S. at the age of ten. While attending Hollywood High School, he worked in a commercial darkroom, processing “signed” prints for fans of movie stars. He continued studying photography and filmmaking in LA and NY. After being drafted into the Army in 1951, he undertook various photographic duties while being stationed in France and Germany until his discharge in 1953. He was then invited to Magnum Photos by its founder, and one of his mentors, Robert Capa, and began his freelance career during the golden period of illustrated magazines. While working prominently in the commercial field, Erwitt has been exhibiting his work widely and has published many books. During the ‘70s and ‘80s, he also worked in films, creating documentaries, comedies, and feature films. Friends Without A Border is grateful to have been able to include many of his wellknown images in our auction over the past decade. We are deeply honored to present the inaugural Artist of the Year Award to Mr. Elliott Erwitt.

Friends without a border The excitement and anticipation is palpable as the doctors and nurses watch a little boy walk with his mom into the newly opened outpatient department at Lao Friends Hospital for Children on February 12th, 2015. Being almost two years old, the little boy is completely unaware that he has just become LFHC’s first, and most famous, patient. His arrival marks the beginning of a new dawn of health care in Laos. As the day progresses, more children arrive with their parents. In all, 47 children were treated on opening day at LFHC. Each day since, an average of 55 children are treated for illnesses that include acute infections, nutritional diseases, congenital illnesses, and chronic noncommunicable diseases. Visiting the Lao People’s Democratic Republic for the first time, one would not guess that the health situation is so dire. Its lush landscape, generous people, rich culture, and calm atmosphere mask the struggles that lie beneath. According to WHO’s 2012 Lao PDR Health Service Delivery Profile, “…health-related outcomes remain among the poorest in South-East Asia and progress in expanding coverage of priority health interventions has been inconsistent. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) accounted for 48% of all deaths in Lao in 2008; communicable diseases, maternal and perinatal as well as nutritional conditions accounted for 41% of deaths. Malnutrition remains a challenge with 26.6% of children under 5 year of age being underweight, and 44% being stunted.” Widespread poverty, poor public infrastructure, and highly mountainous terrain are significant barriers to accessing health care. Every day is an exercise in survival, and none are more vulnerable than the children.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao-Tzu LFHC is just a first step to creating a healthier future for the children of Laos. As the hospital grows to become the first full-service hospital in northern Laos, our education and outreach programs are growing and expanding as well. Medical education classes started in 2014 and are being taught by medical professionals from all over the world; our outreach team is already delivering care to children with chronic conditions who cannot make the frequent trips to the hospital; the LFHC staff is reaching out to local health care centers to help expand their capacity and improve their referral system; and soon, community outreach teams will start making visits to villages all over the country to teach health promotion and disease prevention practices. Our journey is similar to the one we embarked on sixteen years ago in Cambodia with Angkor Hospital for Children. What started as just outpatient services quickly grew to a full-service pediatric hospital, teaching facility, and nationwide outreach program. Over 1.4 million children have received care by AHC’s outstanding team of doctors and nurses. We have another long road ahead but, with your help, we are committed to making lasting change and helping elevate the quality of pediatric care in Laos. Our journey was set in motion by people like you, people who believed in our mission and invested in our vision to establish LFHC. Thank you to the artists, committee members, sponsors, supporters, and volunteers of the 2015 Friends of Friends Photography Auction. Many of you have been with us from the very beginning, and we thank you for continuing with us down a second path of sustainable, high-quality and compassionate health care for children in Southeast Asia.

In memory of Mary Ellen Mark On May 25 of this year, the photography world lost one of its leading lights when Mary Ellen Mark passed away at the age of 75. Mary Ellen played an important role in the early days of Friends Without A Border. She was one of the first artists we contacted after our founding. A socially conscious artist of great talent and integrity, Mary Ellen was drawn toward representing the marginalized and underprivileged. Having recently traveled to war-torn Cambodia, she immediately agreed to help and donated several of her prints. Considered by many to be one of the great documentary photographers, her enthusiastic commitment and participation gave us credibility and momentum, and helped spread awareness of our mission. It is with our deepest appreciation, and in loving memory on this occasion, that we present her series from the Angkor.

NOTICES AND INFORMATION All property is “as is” and all transactions are final. Neither Friends Without A Border (Friends) nor the artist makes any express or implied warranty or representation as to the condition of any lot offered in the auction. No statement made at any time, whether oral or written, shall constitute such a warranty or representation. Descriptions of condition are not warranties. If there is a report on the condition, it will be indicated for each lot on www.fwabphotoauction.org and available at the auction. You can also contact Friends for a report on the condition of any prints. Friends staff, board members and volunteers may bid at the auction for themselves, or they may execute bids for absentees. Auction donations are tax deductible above the guide value in the U.S. No refund or exchange is accepted.

BIDDING PROCEDURES ONLINE BIDS ON LIVE LOTS You can place online bids on the live auction prints at Paddle8 (Paddle8.com/auctions/friendswithoutaborder). Bidding opens on Tuesday, September 22 and ends at 12:00 pm EST on the day of the event on October 6. The highest bids at the end of the online bidding will be the starting bids during the live auction. You will be encouraged to place a maximum bid, which will be carried out by Paddle8 staff during the live auction. Winners will be contacted by Paddle8 after the event regarding payment and shipping method. ABSENTEE AND PHONE BIDS Absentee and phone bidders must fax the “Absentee and Phone Bid Form” with valid credit card information to the Friends office by 12:00 pm EST on October 6. Friends staff will contact you to acknowledge the receipt of your bids. Please indicate if the bid is an absentee or phone bid on the form. Potential bidders must completely fill out all fields on

the form in order to be accepted. Placing an absentee bid is considered authorization for charging the credit card, should you win the item. Phone bids can be placed only for live lots. Please note that volunteers helping with phone bids cannot facilitate placing bids on silent lots. You must provide us with a phone number where you can be reached on the night of the auction, as well as a list of the lots that you are interested in bidding on. In case of any problem with phone lines, we advise you to provide emergency bids on the form. You will be contacted one hour before your first lot will be auctioned and you will be bidding live via telephone with other bidders during the live auction. LIVE AUCTION The auctioneer will accept live auction bids from those present at the auction, in addition to absentee and phone bids. If an online bid is placed, the online bid amount will be the opening bid of the print. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will obtain the item. If matching bids are entered by two or more parties, the first bid received will take precedence. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have final discretion and his record shall be binding and conclusive. If the auctioneer decides that the bidding is below the minimum required for the article offered, he may reject the bid and withdraw the article from the auction.

Shipping and Pickup Winners will be contacted within a few days of the event to arrange for shipping or to schedule a pickup of the item(s) at the Friends office. Winners pay a shipping and handling fee of $50 within the U.S. For overseas shipping, Friends will contact winners with an estimated shipping cost. Successful online bidders will be contacted by Paddle8.
