FOREWORD

A

s a photographer with an outrageous dream to build a children’s hospital in the war-torn country of Cambodia, I turned to my colleagues in the art world for help.

Our first “charity auction,” which took place at Howard Greenberg Gallery’s old location in Soho, offered artworks of various forms. Then, a group of professionals in the field of photography gathered to dedicate their time and helped improve the Friends of Friends Photography Auction. I never imagined that our project would be supported by so many artists and art lovers for so many years. Many developments took place during those twenty years. It was not unusual to stand in front of a fax machine for days just to send one page of a document or message to Cambodia because of a poor telephone connection before the age of emails. Young doctors and nurses, hired before the opening of Angkor Hospital for Children, have become mothers and fathers, or even grandparents, as well as well-trained and experienced mentors for the next generation of medical professionals. Friends Without A Border, born in a corner of my studio, has become a full-fledged nonprofit organization with supporters around the globe. Over the years, you have helped more than a million children receive treatment and saved thousands of lives at Angkor Hospital for Children and now at Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Laos. I am so grateful to everybody who made this happen. The 20th anniversary of this event is a great testament to how “Art Can Make a Difference.”

nquestionably, Irving Penn (1917-2009) was one of the most prolific, respected, and influential photographers of the 20th century. Over the course of a nearly seventy-year career, Penn pioneered new styles in fashion, advertising, and editorial photography, all with his elegant aesthetic simplicity. While invariably seeking to distill the essence of his subject, striking compositions of fashion models set against neutral backdrops and portraits taken in a tightly-angled corner became his signature. Born to Russian émigrés in New Jersey, Penn studied design with Alexey Brodovitch, an influential teacher and a visionary art director at Harper’s Bazaar. He bought his first camera, a Rolleiflex, with the earnings from drawings published in the magazine. In 1943, Penn was hired as a graphic designer at Vogue by another legendary art director, Alexander Liberman, who encouraged him to begin taking photographs. After volunteering with the American Field Service during the last years of WWII, he quickly developed a reputation for his striking style in still life and portraiture. At a time when photography was primarily understood as a means of communication, Penn approached it with an artist’s eye and expanded the creative potential of the medium. Known for both his meticulous attention to detail and a rigorous work ethic, Penn initiated a revival of platinum-palladium printing. With a relative downturn in the glossy magazine market during the 1960s, Penn concentrated on his personal work and experimented with platinum-palladium printing. His large scale pictures of cigarette butts from 1972 were the first series he conceived specifically for this printing process. Curator John Szarkowski selected fourteen of these photographs to mount Penn’s first solo exhibition at MoMA in 1975. This single exhibition overcame a strong prejudice against commercial photographers being welcomed into the museum, back when photography had yet to become one of the main pillars of contemporary art. Penn regularly donated his work to the Friends Photography Auction from the early days, helping to heighten the event’s reputation. For a small charity organization, receiving a donation print from such a preeminent artist was truly a humbling experience. With our deep appreciation for his generosity and encouragement, we are honored to present the Artist of the Year Award to Mr. Irving Penn.

t might be said that Friends Without A Border was developed in the darkroom of a photographer’s imagination. The photographer, Kenro Izu, founded the organization soon after capturing images of the Angkor monuments in Cambodia – a photo shoot that forever changed his life, as well as the lives of countless children in Southeast Asia. The illness and death of children that Kenro witnessed roughly 25 years ago in Cambodia compelled him to take action. He summoned friends, fellow photographers and donors and persuaded them to help him organize a nonprofit organization to build pediatric hospitals in regions where modern medicine was not readily available. Since then, Friends has built two pediatric facilities, Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Cambodia and Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) in Lao PDR. Operation of AHC was handed over to local management in 2013, as planned. The focus of Friends is currently on LFHC, which opened in 2015. Situated in the UNESCO World Heritage site of Luang Prabang, LFHC has already earned a reputation in the region for providing top-quality, compassionate pediatric care and has become a source of pride for the local community. A growing caseload testifies to the important role LFHC plays in the region. And our caseload has grown dramatically. Our doctors and nurses treated nearly 18,500 children in the Outpatient Department and Emergency Room last year – 25 percent more than they did in 2016. Nearly 2,100 children were hospitalized as inpatients, a 56-percent increase from 2016. Doctors and nurses from around the world volunteer at LFHC and not only treat children, but also train and mentor Lao doctors and nurses. Together, they are transforming LFHC into a medically sophisticated facility. Our staff is now tackling several complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. The facility has opened clinics to treat children with thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder, and children with developmental disabilities – services which were not previously available in the region. Additionally, an expanded Neonatal Unit is scheduled to open later this year. Our hospital, which will be conveyed to the Luang Prabang Provincial Hospital in 2025, is clearly helping to shape the future of health care in Lao PDR. Thank you to the artists, contributors, committee members, sponsors, supporters, and volunteers of the 2018 Friends of Friends Photography Auction and of all the past years. Each of you has helped inherit the spirit and compassion of Friends Without A Border – proof that among friends, there truly are no borders!
