Foreword

O

ne of the things I value most about art and culture is that it brings people together, fostering understanding of social issues and advocating for change. Although I first encountered Friends Without a Border (Friends) through a commercial gallery 10 years ago, its annual Friends of Friends Photography Auction has always served as a respite from the market-driven realities of the contemporary art world, providing a reminder of art’s capacity to affect change. How amazing is the story of Friends’ creation – a photographer, Kenro Izu, was so moved by the scenes of poverty he encountered while photographing Angkor Wat that he founded a children’s hospital. An artist! The value and need for the auction’s support became much more of a reality this year for me when my husband and I visited Siem Reap, Cambodia, over four incredible days. Although international tourists visiting the Angkor Wat temple complex overwhelm the city of Siem Reap, we were able to get a sense of the challenges of residents in the region when we visited Kampong Phluk, a village along the floodplain of the Tonle Sap Lake, one of the most important resources for the country. While the lake itself was a breathtaking site, we were extraordinarily moved by the heartbreaking poverty in the village. Shacks stand on stilts up to 30 feet high, acting as a backdrop for the life on the water where men and women fish in boats and children play. I have read that these types of communities use the same water for all their needs: bathing, personal waste, and drinking. Indeed, while the children in this area have the usual ailments such as upper respiratory infection and viral infection, they also have an increased frequency of diarrhea and chronic malnutrition. This small community on the Tonle Sap demonstrated more clearly who might visit Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC), and the living conditions that create curable ailments that without AHC and its partners could mean the loss of life. Against this backdrop, our visit to the hospital took on new meaning. It is easy to assume that its Intensive Care unit, the new Neonatal unit, and other specialized departments that offer state of the art equipment, facilities, and expertise are commonplace in Cambodia; they are not. Angkor Hospital for Children delivers a level of care that is simply not available in other hospitals, for free, saving lives and offering a healthy future for so many children. With the current development of Lao Friends Hospital for Children, the impact of the auction’s support will continue to grow. As you make your bids this year, please remember that you are doing so much more than buying an outstanding piece of art. This is an opportunity to take a stand for children’s health, and to borrow an expression from Kenro, demonstrate that “art can make a difference.”

“Photography is a small voice, at best, but sometimes one photograph, or a group of them, can lure our sense of awareness.”– W. Eugene Smith (1918 – 1978) It’s six in the morning in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The gate to Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) opens with a squeak and a large group of parents shuffle through, carrying their hurt and sick children in their arms. Finding an open spot in the waiting area, the parents settle in. They are tired from the long journey to the hospital, some traveling as far as over 100 miles away. They are weary, but they are happy. They have reached AHC and they have hope for their sick children. It was not long ago when a journey of this kind would end in heartache rather than hope. A dysfunctional health care system kept parents from seeking medical care for their children. Experience had taught them to try waiting out the sickness and hope their child would get better. Not until the sickness turned critical would they finally bring them to see the doctor, only to find that, unless they could come up with the money required for medical care – money they did not have – their children would be left to suffer and, often, die. Fifteen years later, AHC is a flurry of activity as doctors and nurses work long hours to ensure each and every child that comes through the hospital doors (over 450 a day) is treated with the best possible care. Over 1.2 million children have been treated at AHC since its opening in 1999, and not one child has been turned away for lack of funds. It’s been almost two years since management of AHC was transitioned from Friends Without A Border (Friends) to a new, international NGO comprised of the board and staff of AHC. Since that time, AHC has opened a new Neonatal Unit, expanded and updated their Outpatient Department, and started treating eye cancer patients. Each day the staff explores and plans for ways to enhance patient care at AHC, upholding their reputation as the best pediatric care facility in the country. It’s because of the success of AHC that Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) will open in Laos in early 2015. AHC’s reputation preceded itself, and the community of Laos welcomed partnering with Friends to bring the same quality of care to their children. The model of Treatment + Education + Prevention has been the key to steadily improving overall health in the Cambodian community, and it’s what helped propel AHC to international prominence. Replicating this same model, LFHC will be a center for high-quality and compassionate pediatric care; a teaching hospital for all doctors and nurses on staff; and an outpost for community outreach to teach health promotion and disease prevention practices to both the children and their parents. The Baseline Medical Survey, being conducted in 2014 and 2015 in the Luang Prabang Province, will help the doctors and nurses better understand the health needs of the community. The biological and survey data collected will aid the staff in prioritizing patient care, and will be a key indicator in evaluating and measuring health status changes to gauge LFHC’s long-term impact. The recently opened Friends Visitor Center in downtown Luang Prabang is a place for the public to learn more about the work of Friends and LFHC. Photography, art and textiles from Southeast Asia will also be featured and available for donation.

“In photography there are no shadows that cannot be illuminated.”– August Sander (1876 – 1964) It was the art community that first answered the call to action when Kenro Izu announced his plan of building a children’s hospital in Cambodia. Our work simply would not be possible without the dedication and passion of the photographers, auction committee, volunteers and auction attendees…all of you. You have shed light where before there were only shadows. So many children have been, and will be, saved and cared for because of your support. Thank you.

NEW!

THE VERNACULAR VIEW This year we are pleased to introduce The Vernacular View to our event. In bringing together a wonderful assemblage of vintage 19th and 20th century gems – funny, sweet, accidently brilliant “snapshots” and other small masterpieces – we hope to provide an extra opportunity for you to add a special photograph to your collection! Silent bids for The Vernacular View will be accepted up until five minutes after the live auction ends, but collectors may also take advantage of the “BUY NOW” price posted on the bid sheets to be an immediate winner. The field of vernacular photography in its many iterations has become a popular collecting arena in recent years. We hope you will enjoy our selection and take the plunge! I would like to extend my appreciation to Steven Kasher and Winter Works on Paper for their generous donations in support of this endeavor, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the auction! NOTICES AND INFORMATION All property is “as is” and all transactions are final. Neither Friends Without A Border (Friends) nor the artist makes any express or implied warranty or representation as to the condition of any lot offered in the auction. No statement made at any time, whether oral or written, shall constitute such a warranty or representation. Descriptions of condition are not warranties. If there is a report on the condition, it will be indicated for each lot on the online catalog and available at the auction. You can also contact Friends for a report on the condition of any prints. Friends staff, board members and volunteers may bid at the auction for themselves, or they may execute bids for absentees.

BIDDING PROCEDURES Live Auction The auctioneer will accept live auction bids from those present at the auction, in addition to absentee and phone bids. The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will obtain the item. If matching bids are entered by two or more parties, the first bid received will take precedence. In the event of any dispute between bidders, the auctioneer will have final discretion and his record shall be binding and conclusive. If the auctioneer decides that the bidding is below the minimum required for the article offered, he may reject the bid and withdraw the article from the auction. Absentee and Phone Bids for the Live Auction Absentee and phone bidders must fax or mail the “Absentee and Phone Bid Form” to Friends office by 3:00 pm EST on

December 9 with valid credit card information. Please indicate if the bid is an absentee or phone bid on the form. Potential bidders must completely fill out all fields on the form in order to be accepted. Successful absentee and phone bidders will be charged a tax-deductible donation of $25. Placing an absentee bid is considered authorization for charging of the credit card provided on the night of the auction, should you win the item. Phone bids can be placed only for live lots. Please note that volunteers helping with phone bids cannot also facilitate placing bids on silent lots. You must provide us with a phone number where you can be reached on the night of the auction, December 9, from 6:00 - 8:30 pm EST, as well as list of the lots that you are interested in bidding on. Please see the “Absentee and Phone Bid Form” for complete requirements. In case of any problem with phone lines, we advise you to provide emergency bids on the form. You will be contacted one hour before your first lot will be auctioned. You will be bidding live via telephone with other bidders during the live auction.

Shipping and Pickup Absentee and phone bid winners will be contacted within a couple of days after the event to arrange for shipping or pickup of the item(s) at the Friends office at a later date. Winners pay shipping and handling cost of $50. Auction donations are tax deductible above the guide value. No refund or exchange is accepted.

NEW!

Silent Auction In a change from past auctions, silent auction bidding will now be handled only electronically. You will be able to place bids online at www.ibidmobile.net/fwab prior to the auction starting Monday, November 24 at 12:00 am. Bidding will close at 8:30 pm EST on December 9. Please attend the live event or place phone or absentee bids if you would like to bid on live auction prints. These prints will be for viewing only online. Also new this year, all of the silent auction prints are available to be purchased with a BUY NOW option at 125% of the guide value (the amount above the guide value is tax deductible). There is only one print for each lot, and it is first come, first served. The lot will be closed once your BUY NOW bid is accepted. You have several options to place bids for the silent auction prints: 1. iPad, Smart Phone or Web Browser: Prior to the event, starting November 24, visit www. ibidmobile.net/fwab to browse lots or use the Search feature to search by key words. You need to sign up for a free account before making your first bid. Tap “Bid Now” and enter your maximum bid. Successful online bidders will be charged a tax-deductible donation of $25, unless they join the event on site with a full admission. 2. Texting (at the event site only): Send a text message to 99629 using the following format: Bid [Amount] lot [lot#]. For example, for $250 bid on lot 100, text message: “Bid 250 lot 100.” Use numbers to specify your bid amount and lot. No punctuation is necessary. When your bid is placed, you can choose to receive a text message on your cell phone if someone outbids you. Be sure to check your bid status with an iPad Valet if you do not receive text message updates. 3. iPad Valets (at the event site only): Guests at the event site will receive a bidder number at the check-in reception desk. Guests can place bids using their own devices or with any of the iPad Valets who are stationed in the silent auction area. Look for the staff holding iPads and wearing Cambodian Krama scarves around their shoulder! Each iPad Valet has an iPad programmed with the entire silent auction lots and bidding status of each lot, and is available to answer any technical questions. Simply tell the iPad Valet which item you are interested in and how much you would like to bid with your bidder number. When your bid is placed, you can choose to receive a text message on your cell phone if someone outbids you. Be sure to check your bid status with an iPad Valet if you do not receive text message updates.

Automatic Bids Option By placing an automatic bid, your minimum bid is made immediately and then raised automatically by increments to your maximum. If your maximum bid equals a previous bid, the previous bidder prevails. Bidding Errors In the event of a bidding error, please notify any of the iPad Valet staff. The auction manager has the sole discretion to discard erroneous or fraudulent bids. Winner Determination The winner of a silent auction lot is the highest bidder as registered by the auction system at the close of the silent auction (8:30 pm). The winning bid must be certified by the auction manager. If you provided your cell phone number, you will receive a text message indicating if you are the winning bidder once the auction has closed. Bidder numbers and final prices for both live and silent prints will be displayed on the screen in the silent auction area. Payment and Pickup Online winners pay at the checkout desk and are issued claim checks. Credit cards and checks are accepted. Present your claim check at the pickup desk to retrieve your items. However, you need not be present to win. Absentee winners may either arrange to pick up their item(s) at the Friends office at a later date, or to ship the item(s). Winners pay all shipping costs. Auction donations are tax deductible above the guide value. No refund or exchange is accepted.
