Foreword

F

or years, Friends Without A Border (Friends) has held annual auctions to help fund Angkor Hospital for Children in Siem Reap, Cambodia and I have happily donated prints to this worthy cause. After all, Kenro Izu asked me to, so how could I refuse? Last year, Kenro asked me to photograph in Luang Prabang, Laos, as part of a book project to help raise more funds for a new Friends children’s hospital there. I am exceedingly glad that I again accepted his invitation. Laos is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a population of almost seven million people of which over half are under twenty. As a first time visitor, last December, I found a beautiful sense of calm and quietness about this place. In my eyes, both the people and landscape seem to have serenity, equilibrium and contentment. The children, who seemed to be everywhere, smiled, played and laughed. However, the sad fact is that widespread and unnecessary suffering is rampant in Laos and a high mortality rate continues to ravage the population. Doctors are few and far between, and most local people cannot afford to pay for them anyway. Lao Friends Hospital for Children in Luang Prabang, which just opened and offers free medical services for children, is nothing short of a miracle. It offers hope for a whole new generation of Laotians. I had the great privilege to visit the hospital and it was truly a humbling experience for me. I witnessed some of the critically important work that was being done there. A particularly moving moment was when my guide, Nouvanh, quietly related to Jennifer Brown, the Deputy Director of the hospital, how his daughter was suffering from a chronic and painful ear issue. I saw the enormous relief on Nouvanh’s face when Jennifer advised him that he could take his daughter to the hospital anytime, free of charge, and have her examined by a qualified doctor. Recently, I found out that Nouvanh did take his daughter to the hospital. She was examined, her condition was diagnosed and she is now being treated. I write these few words to encourage us all to contribute to this truly remarkable cause. The more we give, the more we share - it is an axiom we have all heard. The artworks offered in this auction are donations from the heart. They are given by artists who are sharing their creativity with the world. It would be wonderful for us all if there could be a 100% participation in this process of giving and sharing. Donating and bidding on these artworks demonstrates to the universe that we are all in this together. Bid high, bid often, have fun, and thank you, very, very much.

ikoh Hosoe is irrefutably one of the leading photographers in Japan, and one with a large international following. Born in 1933, Hosoe began photography at the age of 15 and adopted the name “Eikoh” to symbolize the new Japan which was emerging after WW II.

While he was a student at the Tokyo College of Photography in the early 1950s, Hosoe joined the experimental arts movement. Together with Shomei Tomatsu and other contemporaries, he founded the VIVO agency (1959-61), recognized for its provocative new approach to photography. Known for his psychologically-charged images, along with a strong narrative sense, Hosoe explores themes such as death, Eros, and mysticism. His collaborations with prominent artists from different fields have produced powerful works such as Barakei/Ordeal by Roses with the writer Yukio Mishima and Kamaitachi with the avant-garde Butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata. “To me photography can be simultaneously both a record and a mirror or window of self-expression.” Hosoe has been the director of the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts (K’MoPA) since its opening in 1995. When Friends Without A Border began fundraising for a pediatric hospital in Cambodia, it was K’MoPA which provided the seed money by acquiring the entire series of platinum-palladium prints of Angkor images by Kenro Izu. K’MoPA continues to host annual charity events for Friends, which is in keeping with its guiding philosophy that celebrates a boundless sympathy with all forms of life. Friends Without A Border is grateful for the generous support that Eikoh and K’MoPA have provided over the decades. It is our great honor to present the Artist of the Year Award to Mr. Eikoh Hosoe.

W

hat started as a simple dream of Friends has turned into a reality for the children of Laos. On February 12, 2015, Lao Friends Hospital for Children (LFHC) opened its doors as the staff anxiously awaited the first patient to arrive. A two-year-old boy and his mother entered the door, completely unaware that he has just become the hospital’s first and most famous patient.

Visiting Laos for the first time, one would not guess the health situation is so dire. The lush and beautiful landscape, the gentle and kind people, a vast history with the rich culture, and tranquil atmosphere mask the struggles that Lao children and families face on a day-to-day basis. Laos is one of the poorest and least developed countries. The widespread poverty, insufficient public infrastructure, and highly mountainous terrain are significant barriers to accessing health care. Every day is an exercise in survival, and none are more vulnerable than the children. Unfortunately, 74 out of every 1,000 children will not live to see their fifth birthday in Laos, often caused by preventable and treatable diseases.

© Watt Bryan

LFHC is just the first step to creating a healthy, happy, and hopeful future for children across Laos. As the hospital grows to become the first full-service pediatric hospital in northern Laos, the staff see an increasing number of children every day. The Lao team is quick to apply the lessons learned from medical volunteers from around the world; while the outreach team is already delivering care to children with chronic conditions who cannot make frequent trips to the hospital. Common diagnoses include acute respiratory infections, nutritional deficiencies, congenital illnesses, and chronic non-communicable diseases. Our journey is similar to the one we embarked on sixteen years ago in Cambodia with Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC). Recognized by the Ministry of Health as one of only three essential healthcare facilities in the country, AHC has treated over 1.6 million children. We have another long road ahead but, with your help, we are committed to making lasting change and helping elevate the quality of pediatric care in Laos. Thank you to the artists, contributors, committee members, sponsors, supporters, and volunteers of the 2016 Friends of Friends Photography Auction, for continuing with us as we expand our mission to provide compassionate care for children in Southeast Asia. Each of you has helped inherit the spirit and compassion of Friends Without A Border – proof that among friends, there truly are no borders.

© Kenro Izu

Over the next year and a half, more than 25,000 children would embark on the same path – each and every visit helping us create a new dawn of health care for all of Laos. Based on the philosophy of compassionate care, the staff treat each patient as if their own child. Children are seen free of charge, regardless of their socioeconomic or cultural background. The number of smiles welcomed, tears dried, and bubbles blown increases every single day.
