Ahaana Back with a bang The doe eyed beauty is all set to hit the screens with her new movie Njandukalude Naatil Oridavela Devika V Menon
Rex, Sushmita Agarwal
A
haana Krishna the mesmerising female lead from Njan Steve Lopez has been absent in films for a while now, Wkochi catches up with this Trivandrum born, Chennai student to know more about what is being happening when off the radar. From the lates movie with Nivin Pauly directed by debutant director Althaf Salim to ad shoot with Jyothika directed by directed by Babu Shankar, she has lots to tell us. Where have you been since 2014? I was in M.O.P Vaishnav college in Chennai when I did Njan Steve Lopez during my first year. I did not join college just because I wanted some bachelor’s degree. I was extremely interested and saw a career in advertising and marketing. Just because I did a film, I did not want to compromise on my education. I decided that if a project that’s as good as Njandukalde Nattil Oru Idavela came to me in 2015, I wouldn't say no. If I was to do a film, I would miss out on a lot of classes, and if I did decide to miss out on my classes, the movie should be worth it. I did get a few offers, but I did not think they were worth missing my classes for. Njandugalde came to me in December 2015. I met them officially in January 2016, and shoot started in September. Nothing good came my way during college, which was why there were no movies of mine from 2014-2017. And anyway, as you would know, time just flies when you’re in college! In the movie 'Njandukalde Naatil Oru Idavela', you play th erole of Nivin Pauly's sister. What made you sign up for the movie? Njandukalde is basically a family drama, where Lal sir plays the role of our father and the mother is played by Shanti Krishna ma’am, who’s returning to films after 22 years with this movie. We are three children. Nivin and Srinda are twins and i’m the younger one. It revolves around this family. It’s about
12
WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY
something that happens in the family and events that take place post it. Initially, when they told me I had to play the sister, I was quite apprehensive, but they made me listen to the script and then I wanted to do this movie. Every character in the family has equal importance because the movie revolves around this particular family. It’s great working with all our leading actors. I did not have an issue being the sister and not the heroine. I’m here to act, I want to do roles with substance. What made me sign up for this was that, as a project, it was interesting. And the fact that I would be working with the ‘Premam’ team, and that my character in the film was interesting are the main reasons I chose to sign up for this movie. You've worked with Jyothika for an advertisement. How was your experience? I worked with Jyotika for a Tamil ad. It was a beautiful experience because it was my first ad, and I loved it so much that when someone asks me for my portfolio, I send them pictures of me from the ad, as it was directed by Babu Shankar, who is one of the leading ad directors in South India. When I received the offer for this ad, and that too with a star like Jyotika, I had my doubts what if I end up being someone on the side, because Jyotika is a huge deal. But they kept reassuring me otherwise. Once the ad was complete, I saw that it looked like nothing how I thought it would be. Jyotika, despite being an established actor, didn't treat me like a new-
comer. She was very friendly and we got along well. We had a chat and she asked me what my projects were in Kerala. She’s a warm hearted person and we’re still in touch with each other. It was a really nice experience and something I’ll cherish for a lifetime. Njan Steve Lopez was an offbeat movie, while Njandukal can be termed as a commercial movie. How would you describe your experience in both? Njan Steve Lopez and Njandukal are two different films in every aspect. Njan was different in the subject and in the making. It wasn’t the quintessential entertaining commercial. It had an offbeat feel to it. It was screened at many film festivals. It’s not a film that a commercial movie watcher would enjoy. But coming to Njandukalde, this movie is a 100 per cent entertainer with lots to laugh about. It will be a very fun experience to watch it in theatres. Coming to the making, Lopez was sync-sound, so there wasn’t a lot of noise on the set, with a lot of people. Hardly 20 people at a time, unless there was a major scene happening. But Njnandukalde was a huge set with lots of people. Noise, people and caravans defined Njandukalde, while Lopez was just a close bunch of people shooting. Both are different experiences and I loved them both. Generally, most actors make Kochi their base after their first movie. Yet, you're still based out of Trivandrum. Does that mean you've had to miss out on certain events because of the location? I really believe if a film is supposed to come to
you, and if you’re meant to attend an event, no matter where you are, it will happen. Having said that, I don’t think there is a need for me to shift from Trivandrum to Kochi just for films. If they want me in the film, even if I’m in America, they’ll come to me. Trivandrum is home, but that doesn’t mean I have anything against moving to Kochi. I would love to buy a place in Kochi, in case I have some work, so I’ll have a place to stay. But as far as I know, I haven’t missed out on anything because I stay in Trivandrum. For Njan Steve Lopez, we had a couple of promotions in Kochi, for which I stayed at a hotel, and then there were promotions in Trivandrum, too. While shooting for Njandukalde, I had to shuttle between Trivandrum and Kochi, since the shoot was in Kochi and Thrissur. I agree a lot of people shift to Kochi, but I believe it’s basically for convenience. For me, I have three younger sisters, the youngest of whom is in 7th STD. So, as a family, we can’t move, at least not for the next five years. I don’t have any immediate plans of shifting base from Thiruvananthapuram as Trivandrum is always going to be home, but yes, I would love to own a few places here and there, including Chennai and Hyderabad.

Penning Dreams and Reality In conversation with Kiran VS, the writer of the movie, Sunday Holiday Devika V Menon
H
ow do you feel about the movie doing so well? The movie is doing well and I am happy about it. I feel the main reason for the movie to do well, to be accepted by the audience is because it has a nostalgic feel to it. No matter how advanced we are, we still enjoy our traditions and there is a sense of nostalgia in us. Another reason is that there’s only good that’s being spoken about throughout this movie. And it is something that everyone can accept and relate with. How was Jis Joy roped into the movie? This story was actually completed about two years ago. Like every newcomer to the industry, there was a bit of a struggle involved. We were in a dilemma over who to approach after we had finished working on the story. It was then that a friend of mine named Arun told me that Joy was his classmate, so it seemed like a good idea to approach him. It was when he’d just directed Bicycle Thieves and was a successful director. That was the time when he was receiving a lot of scripts and for him, at that time, our script was just one among the lot. Too much of anything can be harmful, they say, and
14 14
Kiran VS
I think that’s the same with movie stories also. Joy had told us he’d go through the script and get back to us. I knew he’s a very busy man. We waited for almost six months before I gave him a call and asked him if I could have it back if he wasn’t really into it. Though I expected him to say he’ll need a few more days and that he’d read the script by then, the words that came out of him were quite the opposite, and he asked me to come and collect it that evening. It was later in the same day that I got the life changing call from Joy when said he read the script and loved it and wanted to make a movie out of it. Experienced actors cum directors like Sreenivasan and Lal Jose have been a part of this movie. Did working with them help improve your story? I was humbled by the fact that these big names in the industry like Lal Jose, Sreenivasan and Asha Sharath told me the only reason they agreed to the movie is because they loved the story. It has a life, and the minute they heard the story, they committed to the film. It didn’t matter to them that I was new to the industry, all that mattered was that
the story had life to it and they were all glad to be a part of the movie. That meant a lot to me. It’s inspiration and a blessing to me because what I know of and what I can write is not something grand. It’s of things that I have seen around me while growing up and I grew up in a very humble environment. If the public doesn’t accept this, we would definitely think about writing another story, but with God’s grace the movie is doing well. I was quite insistent that the movie should be something that a family can go watch and have a good time. No vulgar scenes or language, nothing the ‘new generation’ is used to now. Thankfully Joy also wanted the same. What are your plans for the future? I am now working on two projects, which need a few tweaks here and there. I haven’t really approached anyone with the story, I am waiting for the right time. One story is quite different, where a writer faces a huge challenge in putting across the words to make sense. But it is something that is based right out of where we live. The other story is not this challenging, it is a complete family based script. To read more, visit www.wtzupcity.com

A Language for Love A charming Dutchman learns Malayalam for his lady love Devika V Menon
Tim
Once I started investing spare time learning the language, I fell in love with the actual language as well.
S
crolling through Instagram, I came across a lovely profile of a man who was learning Malayalam, as his profile claimed to say, "I fell in love with a girl and her language". I decided to investigate a bit further and saw that he was on his 21st day of learning Malayalam, according to his Instagram account 'malayalam.study' and for each day, he posts a picture of what he’s learnt that day. He’s giving himself 90 days to learn the language, because that’s how long it will take for his girlfriend to come back, as she’s currently back home in India for three months. Whoever said love has no language is so right. Read on to discover Aishwarya and Tim's love story! Was there a reason for you to pursue Malayalam? Tell us a bit about your love story - was it a plunge or a whirlwind romance? How does someone born and raised in the
Netherlands end up studying a beautiful and unique language spoken 8000km away from the place he calls home? Though I wouldn't want to describe our falling in love as whirlwind, it was definitely a very pleasant summer breeze, picking us up together as we instantly felt at ease side by side. When I fell in love with Aishwarya, it opened up a whole new world for the both of us. Even though we fluently communicate in English at all times, we quickly started teaching each other simple words the way we learnt them in our own languages. It didn't take long for words and phrases like 'thank you', 'please', and later 'I love you' in both Dutch and Malayalam to be randomly thrown into our conversations. Languages really do bring people together! Our love was the initial spark for me to discover Malayalam as a language.
How hard, or easy is it for you to grasp the language? The Malayalam alphabet looked unlike anything I had ever seen before! I was definitely intrigued. A few months later I knew every vowel and consonant by heart. I really enjoy the flow of writing certain letters, learning it has been a lot of fun and it really kept me motivated to learn more. When you search for 'the best way to learn Malayalam' you'll find that being in Kerala with people who speak the language is said to be the best method to learn the language fluently. For anyone wondering how hard it is to learn Malayalam or any other foreign language, the only way to find out is to give it a shot! Learning the alphabet and learning how to write required some repetition to get used to but it was fairly easy, the hardest part for me so far would be pronunciation. There's a lot of subtle differences in the sounds of letters and words.. I think you have to accept sometimes that you do not fully understand something you've learnt just yet, but it will have to come with time. To read more, visit www.wtzupcity.com
