Urban Soul Souk - The People’s Entry to the World of Fashion The Urban Soul Souk organized at Rotary Bala Bhavan in Panampilly Nagar, Kochi on 8 July was quite a blast with a wide range of clothing, handmade jewelry, paintings, and handicrafts on display. What made it stand out from such art fairs that happen here is the fact that most of the stalls set up were of brands or products that were either homegrown or online, with the emphasis on fashion and lifestyle. The curator behind the project, Ms. Lakshmi, a student of archeology and a designer in her own right, embarked on this journey when some accessories she had made then, as a hobby, turned out to be quite a fare among her close friends and family. Since then she had been actively engaged in design projects and twice a year, holds the Urban Soul Souk, in hopes of getting together like-minded artists and bringing about more awareness among the general public. With a promise to return, Urban Soul Souk closed on 9 July after what had been undoubtedly a very engaging weekend into the world of design and accessories. Ramp of Change Kerala had its first-ever transgender beauty pageant when kochi hosted the Queen of Dhwayah Aghil Menon

t was an evening unlike any other. It seemed like one small step for a Malayali, but a giant step for transgenders in the society. Celebrities and the public came together at this unique event at CIAL Convention Centre in Nedumbassery to celebrate beauty and progress. The Queen of Dhwayah was Kerala’s first beauty pageant for transgenders and it was inaugurated by CPI(M) State Secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. With a spectacular ramp and designs that took over the runway, The Queen of Dhwayah 2017, though it had the all the elements that made a glittering pageant, was an event that would create a milestone in the state. Marking the beginning The beauty pageant which was announced earlier this year, saw auditions across Kochi,

Kollam and Kozhikode in the month of May. Fifteen beauties were selected from forty applicants by a panel consisting of Fashion Choreographer Sunil Menon, Femina Miss India 2016 Elizabeth Thadikaran and Celebrity Makeup Artist Renju Renjimar. The event had garnered much attention by then, in the light of all the gender based news that was putting Kerala in the limelight. After the sports event and the employment scheme for transgenders in the Kochi Metro, this was indeed a another milestone for the section of society that was accepted as the other gender in 2013. Walk of fame On the day of the finale, the event venue was filled with people of all gender and ages who were there to support the participants and the cause. It set a positive note towards

acceptance of transgenders into mainstream society. The pageant consisted of three rounds – Kerala ethnic, designer sari and the gown. As the fifteen participants walked the ramp, making the state proud, they were judged by an eminent panel of judges which included Parvathy Omanakuttan Miss India 2008 and actress, Ranjini Haridas actress and anchor, Dr Paul Mani and Dr Sam of AIDS Health Care Foundation (AHF) India. The participants shone through each stage and six were selected for the final round. Shyama, a 25-year-old Malayalam graduate was crowned as the Queen of Dhwayah 2017 and she became the first person to receive the state government scholarship for transgender persons. The first runner-up was Jaz D’Souza, model and professional dancer from Mumbai and the second runner-up was Harini Chandana, a stage actress by profession. Celebrities in attendance The Queen of Dhwayah 2017 was made even more glamorous by the attendance of State Health Minister, K K Shailaja and celebrities
Madhoo, Ramya Nambeeshan, Sadhika, Mukta, Krishna Prabha, Shamna Kasim, Rimi Tomy, and several others, cheering for the participants. When asked about the star crowd that the pageant witnessed, Renju Renjimar, celebrity makeup artist and organiser of the pageant, said, “celebrities from the Indian film industry has always accepted us the way we are and they have always felt comfortable and safe with us. It was heart-warming to see the huge crowd of celebrities cheering for the contestants.” The beauty pageant for transgenders continued to mark Kerala as a pioneer in working towards gender rights in the country. In conversation with Renju Renjimar she remarked on the importance of the event. “This beauty pageant has literally been a dream come true for me. I have been associated with the film
industry for 22 years now as a makeup artist and when I saw my fellow sisters walking the ramp, I felt content. A platform like this is exhilarating. And, if I have to say anything to the society, it is to accept us the way we are and to allow us to work with dignity.” The organizers are already planning more shows in the future that are avenues to bring awareness and ignite people to open their minds towards an inclusive society.

ith a blend of Blues, Rock and Funk music with Indian Classical and Folk Music, Kochi based band – The Free Fall has rendered many soothing songs that one would love to play on loop. For Vaisakh Somanath and Abhilash Choudhury, the singer-songwriter duo of the band, music has been a focus since they met each other at Infopark. Also exploring solo careers, Abhilash released his first single named ‘Guzarish’ from his acoustic Hindi album at ChaiCofi on June 29. With Vaisakh’s first single from his new travel based Tamil EP to be released in September, their excitement was more than tangible when they spoke to WTZUP Kochi.

I think it’s something everyone should do. It starts from within. This is something that I believe in.
It feels good! People are giving a lot of positive feedback, which is great!
How was your transition from a software engineer to musician? Though I have never received any formal education in music, I always had the passion. After my 10th, I moved to a hostel, which is where I met a few people from the North East who were into music. I noticed they had a different style, and they all had guitars. So, for my first birthday away from home, I asked my dad to send me money to buy a guitar.
Through Guzaarish, you’re telling people to love themselves more. Any specific reason?
And your musical journey? After I got my guitar, I spent around 14 hours a

day on my guitar. I got into NIT Calicut. We had a lot of cultural fests. A friend found out that I write my own songs. I agreed to participate and there started my first ever performance. That’s also where I met my band member Vaishakh. When you perform in front of a live audience, you get instant reviews. Is that better than recording at a studio? I guess so, since the studio has only a handful of people and they’re pretty much compelled to like my music. But when it’s in front of a live audience, the results can be pretty gruelling. You’ll know how your song is that very instant. What’s your most memorable performance? The launch of Guzaarish has to be my favourite. I expected only a handful of people to turn up, but it was a pleasant surprise to see the entire place housefull.

In Conversation With Shruti Ramachandran Actress Shruti Ramachandran makes her comeback after a hiatus in an all-out romantic genre in the film Sunday Holiday Devika V Menon
Waseem F Ahmad
When people recognize you, is it as the heroine of "Njan' or as the pretham from Pretham? Pretham from Pretham for sure. I have had children running away at the sight of me. ( or I don't know if that is my creep smile's doing) How did you find yourself to be a part of Njan, which was your debut? I am a Bharatanatyam dancer. Director Ranjith, who is a close relative of my dance teacher, Mrs. Narayani Anoop happened to see me at class one day and asked me if I would be interested in acting. The rest panned out. I started appreciating cinema because of Njan. It made me realise the amount of effort and energy that goes into making a movie. You're an architect by profession. Where do you currently work? How do you balance working and acting? I am currently freelancing. So work is flexible. Balancing both has not been nerve-wrecking yet.
F
rom playing the part of the wide-eyed love interest of Dulquer Salmaan in Njan to the role of a ghost in the movie Pretham with Jayasurya in the lead, Shruti Ramachandran, who is an architect by profession, is soon to be seen in her new movie Sunday Holiday with Asif Ali and Aparna Balamurali. Compared to your roles in 'Njan' and 'Pretham', how would you say your role in 'Sunday Holiday' is different? In Sunday Holiday I will be seen as Sithara, Amal's (Asif Ali) ex-girlfriend. This is the first time I've tried the conventional romantic
16
genre. I wasn't sure if I could carry it off. I still don't know if I did. I will let the audience be the judge of that. When we take a look at your career, there have been gaps between both movies, despite both of them being huge hits. Why so? I would love to say that it is because I did not get a script that excited me. But the truth is, post Njan, I went to Barcelona to do my Masters. Also, it was only after Pretham that I started looking at cinema in a more serious light. My first two films gave me a new perspective and I'm looking forward to do more films.
If there's an architectural structure that you'd have to call your favourite, which one would it be, and why? It's very difficult to pick one because architecture is constantly evolving so there is always something new that catches your fancy. I did my Masters in self-sufficient buildings so innovations in that field seem to be where my interest lies. What are your upcoming projects? I have just signed up for a project that will start rolling soon and I am super excited about. But I will have to wait for them to announce it before I can say anything more about it.
