FWD LIFE ANNIVERSARY ISSUE LAUNCH FWD Media hosted its monthly cover launch at Holiday Inn, Kochi on November 20 to unveil the November Anniversary issue of FWD life magazine. This time, the FWD cover launch was presented by Holiday Inn, in association with Red FM, WtzupKochi, ASDA, and PVR cinemas. On the cover was the lucky duo of cinema actor Jayasurya and director RanjithSankar. Actor Sijoy Varghese, Rajeev Menon, CEO Rajasree Motors, and the members of the Kerala Blasters football club Manjappada Fan club were the other guests on the occasion. The programme started with Jayasurya and Ranjith’s much awaited movie trailer of Punyalan Private Limited. They unveiled the cover with Group Editor and CEO of FWD Media Pvt Ltd, Abraham Tharakan. Heartfelt speeches were given by Jayasurya and Ranjith, to the applause of those assembled. FWD then honoured the Manjappada Fan club with a trophy for winning the prestigious India’s Best Fan Club Award 2017 by Indian Sports Honour. Ranjith handed over the tickets of the film Punyalan Private Limited, sponsored by PVR Cinemas Kochi, to the club. Eldhos Scaria and Ali Salman from the fan club gifted Jayasurya and Ranjith a Kerala Blasters Football Club scarf. Amalgamating Art and Food at Ember restaurant in Le Meridien

Ember restaurant in Le Meridien, Kochi introduces diners to North West Frontier Cuisine with a perfect blend of food, art, and music Charishma Thankappan

mber restaurant at Le Meridien, Kochi has made a comeback in a revitalised avatar. Known earlier as the museum restaurant in its erstwhile form, Ember now has a revamped style and menu. Executive chef Pawan Pal Singh Maini has done his homework well in heading the team and bringing out the revived menu, which is authentic North West Frontier cuisine. “The focus now is on going back to the basics. We have done fusion and modern Indian meals before and now we are coming back to the lost recipes of India. It is the present trend in the culinary world, so we decided to recreate the same in Ember,” says chef Pawan. Armed with research North West Frontier cuisine is relative-

ly unheard of in the South, particularly in Kerala. So what is it all about? The executive chef explains, “The recipes vary from Pakistan, Balochistan, Kashmir, Delhi, Punjab, and Lucknow. We did a market study regarding that, for which we had held a Punjabi food festival, a Persian festival, and a Kashmiri festival – and all the three were very successful. We found that the cuisine is popular in Kochi. It’s not unknown here. So we realised that our thought process is on the right track.” Most of the ingredients are locally sourced, except some that are intrinsic to the North, such as some of the spices, which are brought in from Punjab. Promoting local art Stepping into Ember, one cannot help but notice the first sights that catch the eye –

which are the ornate decorations upon the wall, comprising rich artworks and paintings. It’s all about art and culture, says chef Pawan. The artworks are from local artists and there are a few paintings which are for sale. The classical and Hindustani music perfectly complemented the artistic ambiance of the restaurant. A luscious feast It has been just about a month since Ember has had its kitchen wafting with the mouthwatering aromas. “We have tried to be as authentic as possible,” says the chef. Among the popular dishes is the DhaniyaMurgh which is favoured over Butter Chicken as it is “something different”. Balti Gosht – mutton that is cooked with pepper, Palak Paneer Kofta, Turra Chicken Kebabs are some of their signature dishes.

A

digital artist who loves football, Sanil Sani is a known name behind the scenes in the football circles not just locally, but internationally as well. He designed the poster of the Indian Super League this year, and has a boast worthy portfolio that includes having designed for the Federation Cup logo of All India Football Federation, Bengaluru FC, and Bundesliga. And what’s more, this Malayali from Aluva is also now a great chum of Kerala Blasters star Iain Hume. How did you get into this profession? I think what opened the door for me to get into this profession is based on two factors. One is my love for football and the other is the interest that I’ve always had in designing something whenever I had free time. When these two combined, I thought of getting into sports-based freelance designs. Initially, I doubted whether I would succeed in this because we live in an age where most people look for jobs which ensure financial stability rather than doing something that they love. I’ve always wanted to find work which gives me satisfaction. Of course, there will be stress even in the designing field but I love it. I can spend loads of hours without sleep to work on a particular design project. It gives me a lot of happiness once I see the final output and it’s a great moment when we look at the hours of hard work that we put in to develop such an output. I have never attended any design course; but learned it all on my own from Youtube tutorials and Google. Iain Hume and Sanil Sani

Which is your favourite team right now? My favourite team is Kerala Blasters FC. There’s no better feeling than supporting your home club. I also love Manchester United and have been supporting them for the last 17 years.

did your friendship develop? Humey has been a really good friend of mine for nearly four years. It was back in 2014 when I first met him. That meeting still remains fresh in my memory as it was the Indian super league season and some of the Kerala Blasters home games were over. After seeing Humey’s performance, like most of the fans, I knew that he would be our main player. So I designed a banner for him with “HUME” written on it along with the image of his face. I tweeted it to him and fortunately he ReTweeted it. Later, I asked him if I could get it autographed and he was more than happy to sign it for me. I shared my email and phone number with him and hoped that he would contact me. I know that a footballer wouldn’t contact a fan directly and never expected anything to happen. But that evening I got a call from Anthony, who is the main staff of KBFC. He spoke to me and arranged a meeting with Humey next day, when, to my surprise, I found that he had got the banner signed by the whole KBFC squad of that season! It was the first time that I had met a professional footballer. Humey has supported me a lot in progressing with my artworks and sometimes when I am not able to find new clients, he would say, ”Keep going and you will find them.” You had worked recently for the ISL

poster. How was it working for this task? It was a project which I really wanted to work on ever since the tournament started in 2014. But during that time I did not know how to contact them. Also, my design portfolio wasn’t big enough to be submitted to a client. I finally got that opportunity after three years and I am really delighted with this chance because it’s a football league which is gaining great momentum with each season. So, to design something for them is always a good feeling. Tell us about some of the clients you have worked for, and which one has been the most memorable? I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some good clients such as Bleacher Report Football (England), Bundesliga (Germany) where I’ve created social media graphics for them. Then, I’ve done some illustrations for Bengaluru FC, Federation Cup logo for All India Football Federation, social media graphics and illustrations for Football Paradise (they are winners of the Judges' Choice Best International Football Website Award). I’ve done match posters for some footballers who played in Europe. Among these, the most memorable client has to be Bundesliga because they are a big league and to get an opportunity to design for them is always a special thing.

How you do you prepare yourself before you start a project? There are two things which I give importance to once I start a project - a good state of mind and feeling motivated to do that specific art. Having a good state of mind is really important. If we are stressed or affected by something, then we won’t be able to work with 100 per cent concentration and dedication. I always love to work on a design by taking good amount of time. Sometimes we need to research a lot to develop ideas or look for reference images of footballers if we are creating an illustration. At the end when you look at the final output, there has to be a special feel to it. What is your biggest dream? My biggest dream is to be become a well-known sports designer, I would love to design for Manchester United and Kerala Blasters. Gaining more clients for freelance work is also a dream which I want to achieve. I’m working hard towards it; nothing comes to you easily unless you put in real hardwork and dedication.

hat exactly can one do in Rs 100? Sounds impossible? WKochi shows how you can take a tour around Kochi in a budget that most people find hard to believe. Location 1: Old Railway Station Road Cash in hand: Rs 100 I started my journey from home by taking a bus to High Court Junction. The journey cost me Rs 7. After getting off from the bus at the High Court junction bus stop, I walked my way

to the Old Railway Station road. On the way, I also had the chance to enter the High Court, but did not spend much time and could not take any photographs due to security issues. As I reached the Old Railway station road from walking under the hot sun, I was able to feel a sudden change in the temperature. The trees that surround the road gave the entire area a cool breeze and atmosphere. The Old Railway Station is one of the oldest buildings in Ernakulam. It was the first station in Kochi but now it's just an abandoned area where the only frequent visitors are wedding photographers and the couples.

Highlights: The cool breeze and the visual ambience of the entire area that looks like a forest. It is one of the most preferred spots by photographers, due to the old rusty buildings and huge trees. Cash in hand: Rs 93 Location 2: Mangalavanam After spending some quality time exploring the roads inside the Old Railway Station, I walked my way to Kochi’s own bird sanctuary ‘Mangalavanam’. It is near the Old Railway Station and is only a 10-15 minutes’ walk away. The roads, surrounded by trees on both sides will make

your walk shorter and enjoyable. There is no entry fee to the bird sanctuary and you can always have a talk with the authorities regarding the types of birds and the inhabitants at Mangalavanam. The tree house built at Mangalavanam is the perfect break spot for you if you are tired and want to click some good pictures. Cash in hand: Rs 93 Location 3: Boat Jetty After enjoying a good rest at the top of the tree house at Mangalavanam, I started my journey again and this time I had two things on my mind, to reach the Ernakulam boat jetty and to have some lunch. I got onto a bus and I reached the Ernakulam boat jetty within ten minutes. As I was searching for a place to get some lunch, I saw a signboard that said ‘Kanji ready’. I went into that small shop and asked the cost of the kanji and what curry would come along with it. The lady at the shop told me it would cost me Rs 30 and they had Tapioca, pickle, and a pappad to go with it. After having my lunch, I left for the boat jetty to get my ferry tickets to go to Fort Kochi. Expense: Rs 7 (Bus Ticket) Rs 30 (Lunch) Tip: You can always get a water refill from the hotels Cash in hand: Rs 56 Location 4: Fort Kochi The boat journey, which started from Ernakulam, reached Fort Kochi in 10-15 minutes. The view was great and the journey was joyous and peaceful. Taking a ferry ride is the way to get around Kochi it seems, as the expense is less and you can get to Fort Kochi in just a few minutes. The ferry ride, which is opted by most of the Kochiites is also the mode of transport which is opted by foreigners who visit Kochi. It is also the place where a random stranger becomes a friend and gives us advice on the places we need to see. Expense: Rs 4 ( Boat ticket) Cash in hand: Rs 52 Location 5: Fort Kochi beachside Fort Kochi is a place steeped in history.

As I walked towards the Fort Kochi beach, which is about a 10-20 minute walk from the Fort Kochi boat jetty, I saw posters that said “Get cycles for rent” and it seemed like a great idea to explore Fort Kochi. The beach area is filled with street shops and more. I saw a fisherman going into the sea with a huge fishing net. I stayed on in the hopes of being able to click him netting a catch. Well, luck favoured the both of us as I got a picture of him throwing the net and he got a big Yellowfin trevally (vatta). Tips: The right time to catch some fish seems to be between 2pm and 4.30pm. You might not get to see or catch fish on your first attempt, but patience is key. Highlights: The street vendors and sometimes you will also get to witness some street performances and kite flying. Expense: Re 0 Cash in hand: Rs 52 Location 6: Vypin I headed to Vypin, next, for an evening walk on the long walkway that leads to the Vypin Beach. I took the Jankar boat from Fort Kochi to Vypin. It is the easiest way to reach Vypin from Fort Kochi in just ten minutes with just Rs 3 as your travel expense. After reaching Vypin, I took a tea break with a hot glass of tea and neyappam, after which I went for my walk. Expense: Rs 3 (Jankar) Rs 15 (Tea and Neyyappam) Cash in hand: Rs 34

Location 7: Queen’s Way It was time to head back home but before that, I thought of ending the day with a great sunset at the Queen's Way. I took a bus from Vypin and reached the Queen’s Way by 5.45pm. The sun was already down when I reached but the sunrays scattered pretty colours upon the clouds. I sat there enjoying the beautiful colours with some peanuts and listening to the music from the radio boxes installed at the Queen’s Way. Some of my favourite tracks were playing and it was the perfect ending to a beautiful day. Expense: Rs 7 (Bus Ticket) Rs 10 ( Roasted Peanuts) Cash in hand: Rs 17 If you can spend an entire day exploring a few parts of Kochi with just Rs 83, imagine what you can do if you have more to spare.

Tips to keep in mind • Carry a bottle of water from home and refill it for free from restaurants • Make sure you wear your best comfortable footwear because you will be covering a lot of ground on foot • Hitchhiking is also an easy and fast way to reach your destination without any expense.

he Kochi Muziris Biennale (KMB) is a massive event that brings in artists from different countries together who present their paintings, sculptures, installations, films and performing arts at 14 venues spread across Fort Kochi, Ernakulam and Mattancherry. The area easily changes into a carnival atmosphere as these artists bring in marvellous collections of both contemporary and traditional arts, and folk as well as classical arts from different parts of the world. There are various shows arranged in galleries and heritage buildings. Another impressive segment in this event is the performances and

folk arts in which the precious jewels of ancient theatre including Koodiyattom, Nangiarkoothu, Chavittunatakam along with Islamic music, Ghazals, and Kathakali are presented. The rhythm is boosted by Kerala's folk, ritualistic, and percussion arts. Anita Dube has been chosen as the curator for the fourth edition to be held in 2018. The announcement has already got art lovers looking up to her in anticipation as they wait to see what she has in store for next December. Anita is a contemporary artist, who completed her BA in History from the University of Delhi. She had her

training as an art historian in Baroda, and later shifted to Kerala. Well-known painter Nilima Sheikh, whose illustrious body of works is a mystical depiction of women-centric issues, has been declared the first artist to get the curator’s nod for next year’s KMBl. Curated by renowned artist Sudarshan Shetty, the previous edition of the cultural extravaganza titled ‘Forming in the Pupil of an Eye’ was a huge success in 2016. A total of 97 artists from 31 countries, including 36 Indians showcased their creative oeuvre at KMB 2016.

Tell us about the latest offering from your brand? Ribs and Chops is 'ready to eat' barbeque. We have a central kitchen, and with the orders that we receive, we make it there and deliver it to homes. It can be eaten hot and fresh. What made you decide to choose the frozen meat products industry? I have various businesses. I’m basically a computer engineer, educated in the US. I

have worked there, and I had a business there for about 20 years. I came back and I wanted to do a few businesses here in India. I got into pig breeding. And then we got into the next level, which was frozen meat, and there is a natural organic process behind it, which is much, much healthier than the roadside meat you get. What is the market like for your products in Kerala? There’s a very good market for it and it is very huge. People in Kerala are very quality conscious. They only want to use the high-end, or high-quality products. There is a moving away from what we call the “wet market”, or the butchers’ market. We are slowly drifting away from that. Did you face any challenges while setting up your business? Actually, no. The main farm is in Karnataka. Here we only have a corporate office from which we manage our other businesses. What makes your business different from the other businesses in the industry? We are the only professionally managed pig breeding company in India. There is no other company like ours which does pig breeding and which follows our format. We use software and we have integrated it into real-time processes. That itself is unique. Each animal and its meat is traceable. Whenever an animal is born, we tag it with an eight digit number which has all the information - who the father is, who the mother is. We can track it upto 30 or 40 years. All the animals are imported from Europe or the US. It is the only traceable meat in the country today. The biggest challenge the public is facing today is knowing whether the pork comes from a good source. How is the future looking for this industry? Meat is not meat unless it is chilled. When you buy from the road, it is not meat, it is live muscle. You have to chill it for eight or nine hours after the slaughter occurs. It is a very good business, very profitable, no doubt about it. But the only thing is that the market is growing very slowly. The roadside meat is very cheap, whereas this is a little expensive, but it has its own advantages. So it’s all good.
