KOCHI GETS HIGH ON ONFLEA.K 2 Kochi witnessed yet another grand edition of Kochi’s own flea market OnFlea.K 2 at Toc H Public School, Vytilla. The flea market was held from September 9 and 10. With a huge variety of stalls, OnFlea.K 2 proved to be a platform for people who needed a podium to showcase their business and talent in various areas. Live performances by bands were one of the main highlights of the event. The Flea market had about 100 stalls. From jewellery, dresses, food products, plant saplings, face painting, indoor sports equipment and much more, OnFlea.K 2 was a success on its own. The flea market also became a stage for people of same interest to meet up and help each other out. It was the floor where new bonds were made. The huge number of customers proved that Kochi will be waiting for the next edition of the city's own first flea market OnFlea.K. Bhavya Babu Mathew and Leah Rachel Abraham, the brains behind OnFlea.K have plans to host OnFlea.K twice a year or more. Venue: Toc H Public School, Vytilla Photos: Anand A N

breaking records Acclaimed music director Shaan Rahman finds himself up on cloud nine on the back of his song Jimmikki Kammal that has sent music aficionados into a tizzy Suhas K.M, Charishma Thankappan
Shaan Rahman
H
is smile is as charming as the mellifluous music that he churns out. Shaan Rahman is now an established name in the Malayalam music industry, known for gifting some of the most memorable melodious songs such as Thiruvavani Raavu, Aaro Nenjil, and even songs from entire films such as Thattathin Marayathu, Om Shanthi Oshana, Oru Vadakan Selfie.
Known generally for creating honeyed, romantic tunes with the hit team of Vineeth Srinivasan; Shaan surprised many with his latest number that has created a frenzy not just in the local circles, but internationally as well. It would surprise many to know that the creator of the wildly applauded Jimmikki Kammal from the film Velipadinte Pusthakam was Shaan. Tell us about the story behind the song that’s become a worldwide sensation – Jimmikki Kammal? When I was working for the movie Godha, Vinod Shornur, the producer of Oru Vadakan Selfie asked me if I could do this project. I was thrilled about it because this was a much awaited movie which would see the coming together of Lal Jose and Mohanlal for the first time in the Malayalam movie industry. Benny P Nayarambalam, the scriptwriter of the film, was the first one to sing the song during our meeting. He conveyed the way in which he wanted the music. The first four lines of Jimmikki Kammal are from an unknown song that was sung long time ago, the
10
WtzupCity.com/COVERSTORY
origin of which remains unknown. I felt that the lyrics were catchy, and so Anil Panachooran wrote the rest of it to make it into a full- fledged song. That’s how this song appeared! And I am so blessed that this song has reached another level of fame. After the song Kolaveri, Jimmikki Kammal steals the show on Youtube. Did you ever anticipate this kind of a reach for Jimmikki Kammal? I always want my songs to reach as many people as possible. I never think about anyone other than Malayalis when I make songs. I want my songs to be a hit in Kerala and as a music director, my concern was whether the director accepts this song or not. My next concern was whether this song met the situation. Thankfully, everything was perfect here. But I never imagined that Jimmikki Kammal would attain this level of fame! After this song released, who was the first person to call you and appreciate you saying it would be a great hit? Before the song was out, cinematographer Joemon told me that this song would be a big hit. While the song was being mixed in Chennai, Vineeth Srinivasan heard this song later and he was so charged about it, he said that the song was enough for ten years. When the song was finally out, music directors Sooraj S kurup, Deepak Dev, and Arun Kumar Aravind called me and complimented me. Everyone was so fired up. I have been receiving several calls after that. You have worked with a completely different team in Velipadinte Pusthakam. So how was the experience with this crew? It was a fabulous experience. I have worked a lot with young directors and actors but this was an entirely different experience. I have wanted to work with Madhu Balakrishnan since a long time so took this opportunity. Also, it would be incomplete if there was no combination of M G Sreekumar and Mohanlal! Jimmikki Kammal was sung by Vineeth and Renjith
Unni, who is a newcomer. Another new singer whom I introduced is Vrinda Shammek who sang the song Neeyum along with Madhu Balakrishnan. It is Lalettan’s favourite in the film.
Godha was one of the huge hit movies of this year. Its songs and background music stand out from what you have been doing so far. Can you tell us about it? I happened to hear the story of Godha in 2015. Director Basil told me that this movie would have a lot of songs and that it’s a different genre as it is based on the sport of wrestling. So I began to think differently. The song Aaro Nenjil was initially planned as a fast number. Basil was okay with it, but in the last minute he wanted to try a reprised or an unplugged version of the song. Once he listened to the unplugged account, he asked us to cancel the other one as he loved the slower adaptation. And that’s how this song happened. The success of the background music of the film can be attributed to the editor Abhinav. Looking at your career I think you are very selective about the movies you choose. You do only a few movies in a year. Why so? I work alone for my projects; I have no assistants or managers. So if I take up a movie, I put in great effort and I work alone for the songs. In most of the films, the directors always give me the freedom to work alone. A cinema has six reels, and if I want, I can handover the six reels to six different people for assisting me; but for me that doesn’t sound well. For all my songs, I have to do them alone, or else I won’t be satisfied. You are known to give a lot of opportunity to new singers. Why do you always choose new singers over those who have already rooted their career in the music industry? I give opportunities to new singers not because I want to give them a break in their career but because I know most of them are very talented. I just give them a small platform where they can show their talent,
that’s all. I know how difficult it is to get a chance like this. After doing Thattathin Marayathu, I got tremendous appreciation and fame with just that one movie. But it took another eight months before I got another film. How did you start your career in Music? Earlier I used to live in Ras-al-Khaima, where we used to get only two channels on TV – English and Arabic. Naturally, we watched the English channel, which mostly played English songs. It was the time of boybands and Backstreet Boys was the biggest. I was inspired and joined a music class to learn the keyboard. Soon, my friends and I created a band of our own and used to create music videos. At that time, a lot of programmes were held in the Gulf where performers were brought in from India. On one such occasion, a friend’s brother showed our music video to the organisers of an event. They liked it and called us to perform at the show. That’s when I met Vineeth Srinivasan for the first time. The two of us hit it off from there and used to collaborate for music. Later on, he once asked me if I could do the music for his album Coffee at MG Road. On the back of its popularity, I got the call from Johnny Antony to do the music for the trailer of the film Cycle. And post this; I got the break in my career as music director for the film Pattanathil Bhootham. Your songs have a Hindustani touch? I love Hindustani music since my childhood as my father listens to a lot of it. It has a good flow. It will make you listen to it more and more. That’s how I have Hindustani influence in my songs too. What are your future projects? I am currently working on a project called My Story, which is the directorial debut of Roshni Dinakar, in which Parvathy and Prithviraj are the main leads. It’s a movie in which I can do a lot of experiments with music. I am highly juiced up about it! Other projects are Aana Alaralodalaral, Aadu 2, Adi Naasham, Vellapokkam.

Getting inked to tell your story WKochi chats with Jerish MJ , the owner of Body Art Estudio Nikhil Wilson
I
t was seven years ago, after he had completed his MBA in Retail Management, that Jerish MJ decided to start something of his own in Kochi. He decided to combine his passion for drawing and his desire to start a new venture in Kochi, which lead to Body Art Estudio. “There have been individuals in Kochi, who did tattoo work before I started this shop, but never in a professional way like we do at our studio”, says Jerish. The Body Art Estudio started in 2011 at Oberon Mall, and it now has a new branch at Edapally. “The new shop is mainly for

skin and hair treatment”, says Jerish. “The minimum age to get a tattoo is 18 years and we usually have customers belonging to the age group of 18-40. ”Talking about the equipment, Jerish said, “We import the equipment from the US and a new batch comes in every month. The safety and the quality of the treatment is something with which we do not compromise here at our studio. We also do all kinds of piercings. “There are some customers who come back to the parlour with their family or friends to get a tattoo and that shows how much our clients trust us and are satisfied
with our work." There are people who want to get a tattoo, but they are afraid of the needle. When asked how they manage such people, Jerish said, “We use a numb spray and that reduces the pain. The ink is getting filled at the same moment when the needle pierces. We also caution those who come to us to get a tattoo on their neck, face, or wrist, if they really want to get a tattoo there as these areas are exposed the most and don’t really get covered with clothing. There are some organisations that are against employees sporting exposed tattoos, so we check with customers on their decision.”

For a French Taste in Kochi
Pâtissière Swathy Prathap is dishing out authentic French delicacies through her venture âme Suhas KM
Swathy Prathap
through what they do. My husband Anend C Chandran and Gayathri Mohan, the artist from The Inkblot are the minds behind âme’s logo. What does âme offer? French gourmet desserts like entremets, macarons, palmiers, Madalienes, paris brests etc. I use classic, authentic French recipes and do not attempt to ‘Indianise’ them. I do make buttercream cakes occasionally.
I
t is a well-known fact that Malayalis have an enormous appetite for anything sweet. But while common flavours abound in Kochi, international tastes are far and few. Swathy Prathap breaks the monotony as she dishes out authentic French sweet dishes through her venture called âme. She speaks to Wtzup about her idea behind the enterprise and what makes it stand out among the patisseries jostling in the city. What inspired you to choose the name âme? What does it mean? Âme is a French word meaning ‘soul’. Initially, I was unsure of choosing it because of the possibility of mispronouncing it. But, it was always my deep desire to choose this name. I think one finds oneself
14
What made you to choose this career? I was always passionate about it. I completed UG in Visual Communication and PG in Public Relations from Chennai, and then moved to Paris for Diplôme de Pâtisserie at Le Cordon Bleu. It was a nine months’ course, and then I had the good fortune to do my internship under Pierre Hermé who is a renowned pastry chef. All thanks to my dad, mom, and sister who supported me throughout and believed in me and what I did. And my husband who kept pushing me beyond my limits. There are a few French patisseries in Kochi. Did you have any second thoughts in coming up with an idea like âme? I did have my doubts. I didn’t know how Kochiites would accept it. But I was confident about what I make. People are open to experiment and they have this urge to try out new tastes. I used On Flea.k as a platform to officially launch âme and the
response was overwhelming. I also had some repeat visitors on the second day and I am getting orders and enquiries. So right now I am happy about the feedback that I am getting. Since you prepare French desserts, from where do you source all the ingredients? Most of the ingredients are imported and I use only couverture chocolate. How is âme different from other french pâtisseries in kochi? I am not into any competition, I want to serve the real French flavours here. For that, as I mentioned earlier, I use the finest ingredients and take utmost care in making quality products and even packing them. Products from âme follow a minimalistic design. I am sure people will get to see the difference themselves. How much time do you take to prepare all these French items? It depends upon the particular dessert. In the case of entremets, it takes between one to two days because they have multi-layered mousses and sponges. The different components have to be made separately and then assembled. What’s your favourite flavour? I am a huge fan of citrus flavours, vanilla, and of course chocolate. But here, people are not really excited by citrus desserts. They expect desserts to be sweeter. I am sure they will change their mind as soon as they get their hands on some real citrus delicacies. What are your further plans? I am planning to take things slow. I have plans to set up a patisserie in a year’s time if everything goes well.

Joboy at your service 24/7
The new app JOBOY offers its customers spot delivery services from laundry pickups and delivery to midnight surprise cake deliveries Nikhil Wilson
K
ochiites are in for a relief from their daily drudgery of running errands or finding a trained expert for home repairs. JOBOY is a mobile application where you can get many services delivered at your doorstep, at the time you choose. From midnight surprise birthday cakes to emergency electrician services, JOBOY is the app you need to help you at any time of the day. Jees V Kariyil, co-founder of JOBOY says, “The idea of JOBOY came to us from our own experience - of the difficulty of finding home-related services. First of all, you need to find someone with the required skill you are looking for, wait for their availability, and then pay the price they ask. From our research, we found out that most people in urban areas faced such issues and they all want an easy
solution. We started with basic home services such as electrician, plumber, AC repairs, etc., and included services like laundry, cake delivery to online shopping as we progressed. What made uber and other such services so successful is that they come to the customer's location and that is the same concept we follow. We deliver the aid at the customer's location, at the time they choose, with transparent pricing, while ensuring safety of the customer. What makes JOBOY a great app is the availability of workers 24/7. These workers, or 'partners' as Jees calls them, are selected after various rounds of background verification processes, such as police verification, work history verification, and much more. Then they go through an induction process on customer service and sign a clear contract including service delivery agreements. JOBOY even provides
a warranty of up to 60 days on services, so customers are assured they are getting the right technician for their work. JOBOY currently provides more than 75 services in Kochi, and also has an online store providing local shopping. You can shop for cakes, flowers, home-made pickles and squashes, and apparels and accessories from famous local brands. The app is simple to use, stores your data so that you don't have to type in your address every time you need a service, at the same time, customer data security is ensured through certified data protection processes. The main highlight of the JOBOY app is that you can schedule the required services according to your convenience, and the rates for the services are lower than what is generally charged for these services, without any extra delivery charges.
