here’s no place like home, and this past year I have realized that there’s no place like your hometown. Having lived in Trivandrum for 17 years, I did not realize how much the place grows on you, till I left. And now I have even more reason to add to my determination to return to good old Trivandrum. Finally, people are beginning to realize that Trivandrum is a great place to be! Wtzup promises to keep everyone on their toes and track where all the action is, and I am really happy and proud to say that my collegemate Prathap Nair is really helping to change the ‘scene’ of our city. So while everyone is focusing on learning to live their life to the fullest, let me share a little information that I promise will take you a long way. Remember to chill. We all hear it, but do we really know how to be relaxed? Do you know that if you practice relaxation, it becomes a state of mind that your body automatically puts you in when you get stressed. Meditation has been around for a long time, but in the past decade scientists have been really discovering that a
simple thing like relaxing at for a few minutes a day, can give you multiple health benefits, and add quality and quantity to your life span.
Studies have shown that stress reduction through relaxation, aka meditation can reduce BP, heart disease, faster and better post operative recovery and build immunity. This is primarily because when you meditate, your body releases hormones that help your cells to renew themselves, and help in your gene repair. In fact, the health benefits of meditation have become so overwhelmingly obvious that many hospitals in

western countries have started making it mandatory for inpatients. Even when it’s done for as little as fifteen minutes a day, it is extremely effective. No, you don’t need to chant or sing or even follow any guru for simple meditation to become a part of your life. All you are doing is taking a few minutes to calm your body and listen to your own inner voice. In turn you handle your daily affairs and your office workload with a better perspective, and will be the owner of a more calm and peaceful life. As a bonus, you would get to enjoy better health and also enjoy a party or any event Wtzup alerts you to for as long as you please! Start with a simple practice of sitting in a quiet place at any time that is convenient to you, and focus on your breath going in and out of your body. As you keep doing this, you will notice that your mind is bubbling over with thoughts constantly. But after a couple of days, you will experience those thoughts becoming quieter and quieter in a short time. Or check online for any aids or techniques that are appealing. Whichever method you choose, the effects will be the same. So go ahead and enjoy every moment!

riends, being a movie buff since my childhood days, I read and watched all I could get about the world of cinema. Through this column I would like to share my experiences and good times I had with the who’s who of Indian Cinema. To begin with I would like to choose my all-time inspiration, the one whom I closely watched and followed on television from my school days in Circus and Fauji till Chennai Express; the Global Phenomenon, Iconic Super Star of Indian Cinema Sharukh Khan; who has more than lived up to the literal meaning of his name – “Face of a King”. I met King Khan for the first time at IPL Kochi, second time when I hosted a show where he was the chief guest, at the Asianet Film Awards last year held at Dubai and there again at Dubai for the film awards last month. In my words, exclusive and elusive, yet charming and charismatic are just some of the ways to describe Sharukh Khan. Never failing to charm and please, the truly brash and self-effacing SRK will whizz you with his smile. Though this was my fourth meeting with the King I am as excited as much as the first time and bit more special, because I was doing South India’s very first exclusive Interview with Indian Cinema’s reigning royalty SRK. I was delighted to pick him up from a brand new Rolls Royce and take him through the Red Carpet for Asianet Film Awards at Dubai. Also not to forget the courtesy shown by his security chief who was very much ensuring safety. King Khan looked dapper in his black outfit (he did say that Black & White shirts/trousers and Blue Denim jeans has always been his personal pick) with a Rayban Aviator & and a Tag Heur on hand, but the brand which glued everyone’s attention was ‘SRK’ himself. The entry by SRK to the Red Carpet was so grand and voguish that I felt his off-screen presence standing out more than his on-screen presence. When I started the interview saying “Don ka intezaar gyaraah mulkom ki police kar rahe hain, lekin ‘DON’ mere saat hain…”, he responded with an impish
smile saying “DON ko sirf Kerala ke log hi pakad sakte hain.” During the few hours that I shared with him, I realized that the unassuming Khan is keen on making others comfortable. These days when even one-film-wonder-actors struggle to manage their fame, for someone who has experienced stardom for two decades; SRK is a an epitome of humility. When asked about his connection with Malayalam Cinema, actors and technicians he was super thrilled to talk about our legendary artists namely Mammootty, Mohanlal and technicians Priyadarshan, Santosh Sivan, Resul Pookutty, Sabu Cyril etc. He also commented that Indian Cinemas biggest technicians are from Gods Own Country and he stays connected to Malayalam movies through his close friends from Kerala. When I mentioned that SRK is the only Bollywood star who has a registered fan club in Kerala, his witty response was “Keralites always have a very good taste in choosing their stars “. Well, it is startling just how much of a walking dichotomy India’s biggest movie star is. He has more than cemented his place in the Bollywood pantheon and there would appear to be very few frontiers left to conquer. And yet the man remains as hungry and enthusiastic as if he were a new-fangled debutant just about to make his first bid in tinsel town. In short, I would say he is a fascinating case study.. When I mentioned to him off record, that I had read one of his earlier interviews during the DDLJ days where he was asked about his ambition & he replied, “I want to be a bigger star than MJ, Michael Jackson”; now he is living the international fame with billions of fans across the globe, he just smiled at me and asked “ Tell me, what do you want to be in life”, the movie bug in me responded swiftly, “I want to be a bigger star than SRK”. He simply hugged and replied “ Inshallah, God Bless U..” To delve deeper into my interesting moments with SRK, please wait for the launch of my book titled ‘The Legends I met’..

CITY THEATRES ALL SET FOR
THE MULTIPLEX ROAR B
eing a city to hold the maximum number of cinema theatres in Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram is now all set to get more glorified with the multiplex culture. There was a time when moviegoers cared only for the movie they had to watch and were least bothered about the comfort of the theatre. Now the time has changed, people expect high quality services for the money they spend. They prefer comfy cushion seats to the old torn ruptured wooden ones, latest projection technology and Dolby sound system to the age-old film presentation system to have a complete movie experience. The new wave of multiplex culture has already hit the city and to start with, seven theatres have geared up with their renovation works. However, the start of the multiplex culture was introduced to the city by Mr. Girish Chandran, the proud owner of Sree Padmanabha Theatre. Narrating the history of the now ultra modernized theatre, Sree Padmanabha: 1936 – Padmanabha Picture Palace, a Tent Cinema with a single projector
1972 – Renovated to an air conditioned cinema hall with a seating capacity of 1200 1997 - Dolby Stereo and DTS sound system were introduced 2011 – Marked the changing era of the theatres in the city with Sree Padmanabha bringing in the quality viewing experience to movie watchers. With an expenditure of around 1.5Cr, the theatre had a major face lift to a spacious modernized theatre. Though the seating capacity reduced to 900, the theatre became spacious with the comfy cushion seats, latest technology in projection and sound, ultimately a place where you would love to watch movies. Pests and rodents were the non-invited residents of most of the theatres. To resolve this, Sree Padmanabha collaborated with an international pest control and services company to provide a clean and hygienic theatre experience. 2013 – Renovated to a multiplex with two movie screens, Sree Padmanabha and Devi Priya. The seating capacity was bifuricated between the two; Sree Padmanabha with 517 and Devi Priya with 197.
Sree Padmanabha won the best theatre award in the 15th, 16th and 18th IFFK. It was the only theatre selected in the state for conducting the Oscar Film Festival 2012, the first of its kind hosted by the State Government. This is all thanks to Mr. Girish Chandran who belongs to the Merryland family, one of the pioneers of film production in Kerala. Mr. Gireesh has taken on his love for movie halls from his grandfather P. Subrahmaniam and father P Chandran. He makes it a point to watch movies at the best theatres in the city wherever he goes; not just to watch the movie but to imbibe what makes the viewing experience so special. The perceptions were well thought out to be then implemented. Speaking to Wtzup TVM, Mr. Girish Chandran told us, “The change is remarkable. We are awarded Platinum Grade by the Govt. of Kerala, first among 15 theatres identified from 399 cinemas across the state. Now we have a significant downfall in the number of complaints we receive. We even have
our presence in the social media, the facebook page where we receive numerous feedbacks from the public. Any sort of grievances notified are taken up for immediate action and are rectified within 48hrs.” That’s quality and efficient customer service! With the advent of state-of-art technology home theatre systems, it is challenging to get the public out from the comfort of their homes to the cinema theatres. The only way out is to provide them with similar experience even in theatres. The top quality services, friendly and professional approach from staff members, new and improved facili-
ties and all the more, ample parking space are the new features of the upcoming multiplexes in the city. Here’s is a handy list of the upcoming multiplexes in the city with the number of screens Dhanya Remya Theatre – 4 New Theatre – 3 Kripa Theatre – 2 KSRTC Terminal Complex – 2 The upcoming projects to have the multiplex boom will be the Lulu Hyper Mall at Pattom, Artech Property Complex at Pattoor and Technopark Phase 3, Kulathur Now that’s a huge number for, Trivandrum!!! Get ready for a hi-tech movie experience....

he Creative Rebel’s first chapter is a conference to bring together 200 young and dynamic brains from 45 colleges across the state. It’s the first-of-its-kind conference in Kerala to connect thinkers from Arts, Business, Technology, Politics and Literature. An innovative brainchild from a group of 20 students from College of Engineering, Trivandrum(CET), The Creative Rebel is essentially an invited-only event endorsed by the Government of Kerala and The People’s Company, which is slated for March 2nd at Technopark, Trivandrum. The event aims at formulating viable and feasible means to solve umpteen social, technological and ecological issues prevalent in our community through the collaborative exchange of thoughts between government representatives, seasoned bureaucrats and a noteworthy persona from the respective domain. The first edition of
the event throws in discussions on polluted media, long-forgotten agriculture and the marginalized Arts Sector. From paragons like M. S Swaminathan, Sasikumar and Sarah Joseph to new generation rebels like Riyaz Komu, Dhanya Ravi and Jeemon Jacob, we present an array of eminent visionaries to address the delegates. The discussion on Media emphasizes the need of an intrepid, independent and unbiased medium to spread a story that deserves to be told, spread news that should never go unheard, redress a problem that needs to be addressed. The interactive session on Arts is set to refurbish the once-marginalized sector of Artists through Art hubs and art exhibitions. This would give the art sector a new lease of life, through better career prospects, enhanced corporate support and intermix of artists from various stratums of life. On contrary to the popular belief, Green Revolution has not yet happened in India, but all that happened was Production Revolution. The discussion on this topic hopes to bring about a paradigm shift in the political, economical and cultural spheres of our state. The Creative Rebel inculcates a new conference culture wherein each edition is dished out with a preplanned agenda and feasible solution unlike TED or INK.

WHAT IS ETTEKAAL SECOND? According to research published in the Archives of Sexual Behaviour, it takes exactly 8.2 secs of holding a girl’s gaze for a guy to fall in love with her. Gentlemen, boys, are you listening? You better, for your love life may well depend on it. This amazing secret to finding the love of your life forms part of the new Malayalam film Ettekaal Second. Men, over the centuries have been clueless about what makes a girl flip. They’ve tried everything from showering her with expensive gifts and all the perfumes of Arabia but without much success. Well, all of that can change now. According to the study, the secret lies in holding the female gaze for ettekaal seconds. ‘It’s the duration threshold required’ says Tommy John, scriptwriter of the film. ‘Great. But what prompted you to read the Archives of Sexual Behaviour in the first place?’ we asked Tommy John, and this erudite Professor of English said ‘It was part of my research for workshops on media influences on human behavior.’ Snicker. We’re not convinced. Ettekaal Second is the first film produced by Fifth Element Film, a production house based out of Los Angeles and Mumbai. They have been a budget advisory for many Bollywood flicks. ‘We

found the concept absolutely fascinating’ says Doney Joseph, CEO of Fifth Element. ‘Besides, Tommy who is one of the partners of the company was insistent that the first film we make in Malayalam should be a good, heartwarming love story. For reasons known only to himself.’ Perhaps the fact that he is in constant interaction with the student community might have prodded Prof John to come to this decision. Govind Padmasoorya plays the part of Sandu, hero of the tale. He is a young man looking for a job when city girl Neetu (played by the gorgeous Miya) drops in right out of the sky. Circumstances bring the two together, one thing leads to another and, well, the two fall in love. But there is a villain in the piece: Mithun (played by handsome hunk Rohit Vijayan). Rich, flamboyant and a general pain in the posterior, Mithun is the gent who Neetu’s folks, based on some family obligation, have found for her. Therein hangs a tale. Ettekaal Second boasts of the longest song shot entirely underwater in the history of cinema. ‘Every shot was canned with special equipment’ says Vinod Vijay who directed all the three song sequences in the movie. Vinod was a post production supervisor for Mumbai based Cloud Nine Entertainment when he was pulled in to do the songs for the movie. ‘We had to get realistic shots and the challenge was to set up such scenes under water. Experts from the Annenberg Center in LA advised us on the technicalities and we did extensive tests for days. Sinu Siddharth, a specialist underwater camera man shot the song for us. I got exactly what I wanted and people who have sneak-peeked it tell me it is amazing.’ If what Vinod says is true,
Salaam kashmir ‘Salaam Kashmir’ is an upcoming Malayalam action drama film directed by Joshi and produced by Mahaa Subair for Varnachithra. Through this movie, Suresh Gopi has made his comeback after two years. The Malayalam action drama touts some impressive numbers composed by M. Jayachandran. The main plot of the military based thriller revolves around the lives of Tomy Eppen and Sreekumar. Sreekumar was leading a blissful life with his wife until the entry of Tomy Eppen, who has a mysterious past. The turn around of events forms the rest of the plot. we’ve indeed got something worthy of the 100th year of Indian cinema. There are three songs in the film and they’ve been composed by K. Santhosh and Colin Francis. The songs are variously, soulful, fun and romantic. Rafeeq Ahammed has penned the lyrics. Kanakaraghavan, director of Ettekaal Second says ‘We shot the whole film with multiple cameras. This means that the actors have to emote simultaneously in real time. We don’t stop shoot to change camera positions and lighting as is normal.’ ‘What’s the big deal?’ we asked. ‘Realism’ says Kanakaraghavan. ‘We get perfect continuity and realism.’ ‘The producers insisted on this’
the director adds. ‘That’s the way movies are made in Hollywood.’ Anyway, the film is ready for release this 21st. We’re waiting to catch it in theatres on the huge screens, if nothing else for the famous underwater song. A 21st Feb release for a 21st century film! Seems apt. ‘Is this a love story for the modern times?’ we asked Santosh Babusenan, producer of ES. ‘Yes’ he said. ‘But love stories are eternal.’ Watch it and decide for yourself!

t’s been 32 years since MG Sreekumar made his mark in the world of cinema as a playback singer. All these years he portrayed different and vivid roles of a singer, music director, film producer and even started a school for music and dance- ‘sarigama’. He dedicated the past few years for all those ailing musicians and senior artists around him who couldn’t even afford a meal per day. He recently launched the MG Sreekumar Charitable Society with the help of NIMS Heart Foundation at a function held at Thiruvanathapuram which was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Oommen Chandy himself. “There are many deserving musicians in the city and across the country, who had the talent but couldn’t reach anywhere owing to limited
scope. I want to celebrate my 32nd year in the music industry by doing something for them,” said MG Sreekumar. He added, “It will be a small pension scheme for retired musicians, artists and all those in immense distress.” In addition to that, the ailing artists will get a medical card that will allow them to avail treatment from NIMs upto Rs. 1 lakh annually and which will also include 15 bypass surgeries and medical camps all over Kerala. “I will conduct fundraising programs for the charitable society,” said Sreekumar. The launch was accompanied with a cultural night, ganamela by big names like Rimi Tomy, Madhu Balakrishnan, Najim Arshad and MG Sreekumar himself. This was followed by a dance show by Shamna Kasim.

ne of the most congested roads that lead to the city is the road from Parassala to Trivandrum city. This 30 km stretch is a horrid travelling experience due to the traffic blocks and condition of the roads. Road widening is a possible solution but reluctance of landowners to handover their space and not so attractive resettlement package is a hindrance. The most apt solution for the traffic snarls will be an underground expressway similar to those built elsewhere in the world. Right now, most of the readers will be dismissing this as an expensive utopian idea. Yes, the capital investment is high and tunnels are more often built only when there are no other option available for an essential road. On
Dolphin Bar ‘Dolphin Bar’ starring Suresh Gopi, Madhu, Anoop Menon, Suraj Venjaramoodu is a Malayalam drama film directed by Diphan. The action hero Suresh Gopi appears in the role of a bar owner, Panayamuttam Sura, in this movie. The film tells the story of asome regular visitors of his bar. The film revolves around a Thiruvananthapuram-based bar named Dolphin, owned by Panayamuttam Sura (Suresh Gopi). Suresh Gopi’s appearance and dialect is the USP of the film. Another highlight of the film is the remix of the evergreen hit song, O Mridule..... from a film of the 1980’s. Dolphin Bar is produced by Sudeep Karat and Arun M.C. M Jayachandran scores the music.
Underground Expressways Need of the Hour
the expense front all infrastructure projects are expensive, the efficiency of the executing agency will determine the control over the final cost. The Kochi Metro is a fine example for an essential project that has benefits beyond the cost of the project. All over the world there is a growing resistance to surface and elevated roads thus making it increasingly difficult to provide the additional road space that may be required. Tunnels reduce noise, air pollution, communal disharmony and are not visually unattractive as are surface roads. If only the capital costs of construction are used to compare alternative transportation routes, then tunneling would never become a viable option. However,
the intangible costs, such as effect on community health, air pollution and noise, make tunneling viable if they are assessed. Currently, the local community has to bear these costs as they are not recognized or accounted for in the normal evaluation of alternatives. The trade-off could be greater if the gain in surface space, health costs or visual aspects were included in the analysis. When these costs are assessed, tunneling can become a cheaper alternative to new or planned surface roads and has an environmental advantage over present roads in a place like Kerala that has high density of population.
