red velvet building with the deep chocolate interiors, nestled in a green alcove in Kakkanad. The aroma of freshly ground coffee arises as the waiters move helter skelter to fulfill orders. Tonico Cafe opened up a couple of months ago and already has a dedicated patronage. The professors from the nearby college could probably come and teach here as Tonico is a popular hangout for students. For the techies from Infopark, it is a great place to recharge. As the day moves into noon, the cafe gets busier with people seated on the comfortable chairs with a view of the green through the full height glass facade. The outdoor seating is getting occupied too, as the clientele is sheltered from the Kochi heat under a huge tamarind tree. My friends have told me to not miss out on the Hungry Joe burger. Their other popular items like steak, pizza and sandwiches move quickly from kitchen to table, plated with care. As we debate over which of the crisp white

plates and cups to use in the shoot, the chef whips up two juicy burgers with my favorite side of good old potato chips. I watch as the the ice floats up like an iceberg when the soda is poured into a refreshing cooler called the Titanic. It is fascinating to watch the ordered chaos in the kitchen. The staff are extremely courteous and rather excited about the shoot. They let their creative juices flow with the coffee and even lets me have a go on their chalk board announcing the day’s specials. If you are having a great time here, you can share the news with your freinds immediately as there is free wifi in Tonico. The cafe is open late into the night and is always buzzing with upbeat music. Tonico is a great place to unwind with good food and good company. One more joint to add to the growing list of Kochi’s exciting hangouts!

Magnetic Masai Mara Into the wild cat hunt and stories that spread to the vast grasslands, here’s a safari story in Kenya.
S
Laila George
omeone called me a ‘wander woman’. I feel we only need confidence and courage to travel. I took it as a compliment, because in the roots of my genes is an insatiable desire to travel. Years ago, I was working for this travel agency as an executive. Then later went on to start a tour company called Travelogic, I never thought I would travel to the same country Kenya, where I was born. I had just returned from Istanbul and was still in that hangover. A few of my friends wanted me to join them for a wildlife tour and that too in Kenya… my native land. I didn’t have to think twice. Our team of 10 eventually were off to our budget safari of Kenya. Within few minutes after coming out of the airport, we whizzed off to the camp that was pre-booked and paid, by a friendly driver come guide, Sean. Wild Cat Hunt Told by many of our friends, I was asked to keep our fingers crossed to see exclusive breeds of animals including lions. It was just my luck that day; we were slap bang in front of a frisky male lion biting his partner’s neck in the peak of frenzied passion. Shortly afterward, and in-between a herd of Zebras, we spotted one of the rarest breeds of all wild cats. Sean pulled up close and turned off the engine, and we just watched as the gorgeous creature played in the long grass. As we were moving forward, we could see the petite and categorically cuddly looking Cervil with its ballooned shaped ears. That was some start, before even reaching our tents. The ten of us were greeted by the camp people who made us settle down comfortably with a four-course
08
feast. In our short time, we were treated with a veritable smorgasbord of wildlife. Tall Tales The early morning drives were the most rewarding ones as we parked a few meters away from four cheetahs (just one year old or so) waiting for their mom to return with a kill. We were lucky to watch the tall giraffes so close to our vehicle and the herds of buffaloes and elephants crossing the lakes. The third day evening was a day of dancing with the Masais, around a camp fire. It was fascinating to see them jump up in the air with the spears in their hands. Their feet movements were fast, and brisk. They were wearing dark red colored outfits draped in a particular way and head gears along with the broad beaded ornamental earrings and necklaces. The men are warriors and they too adorn themselves with beads of all colors. It was the last night in the wilderness. I never felt homesick as there was never a dull moment. We enjoyed every second we spent there and the next year called out for another visit. Getting There The nearest airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi (280 km away from the Masai Mara National Reserve). To reach Masai Mara from the airport, you need to
take connecting flights- Air Kenya or Safarilink to the reserve’s landing strips. You’ll have to board from the Wilson Airport located 12.5 Km away from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. Via road, you need to take the services of a number of safaris from Nairobi that ends at Sekenani entry point of the Masai Mara National Reserve. You can also hire a chauffeur driven car or a taxi. The ride is six hours. For getting around Masai Mara, you have the option of modified mini-buses or you can hire 4WD vehicles. Safari ya salama!

Deepti Sati makes a mark with her bold and beautiful performance in her debut movie, Neena. Atheena Wilson LJ Productions
R
eading the name on the poster, in the curved typography it was inscribed, Neena. The movie has its rave reviews for depicting mirrored personalities of unconventional versus conventional. While we watched the movie, it instigated an introspection about discovering your freedom but more importantly questioning what’s freedom. But more than interpreting the movie, Deepti Sati personified bravado. Taking a bold leap from modeling and her Miss Kerala title, she made her debut in Neena. Keeping it real on the reel, Deepti shares her experiences in each place shot in the movie: Russia, Mumbai; and Kochi. Keeping things short in St.Petersburg There’s been a bumbling conversation about the haircut
Reji Bhaskar 10
on tabloids and news. Every girl has got the urge to cut their hair now. I remember meeting Deepti Sati a year ago at a shoot. Donning a golden lehenga and soft, luscious hair, she looked striking with distinct red. When I asked her about the haircut, she mentioned. “ It was difficult to cut my hair, especially because I was in beauty pageants and hair was an important criteria. When it comes to acting, it involves shedding inhibitions. That included facing a pair of scissors.” Deepti went to a styling parlor in Moscow. Gently playing with the bounce of hair, the hairstylist marveled at the volume of her hair. She winced each time she had to get it shorter. While it’s in his field of expertise to direct, Lal Jose gave a shot at describing the haircut to the stylist. At one point she said it became comical because it was a language of gesticulating and hands flying in the air that lead to the swivel of scissor and finally the bob. “It’s funny,” Deepti exclaimed, “ I did not know what bob to call it.” We’re sure hers will always be the Neena Bob. Role Play in Mumbai With her jetting off in bikes, wearing loose shirts that blinds the effeminate poise, clinking glasses and casually drinking her vodkas, her role comes to life in Mumbai. As someone who works in the creative section of an advertising agency, does she stay
unconventional and learn to embrace conventional or eventually realize that conventional is a subjective word? She laughed by saying that looking into her real life; things are very conventional and at one point the borders just blur naturally. Looking at her wardrobe transformation in real life to the reel life, we asked if there were any keepers from Neena’s wardrobe. She mentioned that the clothes were certainly very comfortable, and she wouldn’t mind being cozy in those shirts again. Of course, there were some uncomfortable parts. She mentioned, “ Gaining weight was a challenge, I had to regularly take in yogurt smoothies and eat more frequently to gain six kgs for the role.” But her most iconic shot was the opening shot, a close shot she said. Where she takes a wild gulp of vodka straight
wtzup.in/COVER
from the bottle. She mentioned in a very cute accent, “ It was pachavellom not vodka,” she joked. the evolution from still photography to motion pictures was an indelible experience. On and Off Screen in Kochi She’s quite a daredevil indeed. She shared some of her most funny experiences especially being a novice rider. Deepti had to actually race on the bike. There wasn’t enough of time to practice on the narrow roads, and yes the experimentation was on the highway. The qualms of shifting gears was still something she has a laugh at as she looks back. “Vijay Babu’s reaction was priceless! He kept on saying, Deepti slow down, you know I have a wife and a kid right!” Deepti shows her spirit in her willingness to go beyond herself and experiment, giving shape to an unforgettable character through whom she is conquering a brave new world.
5 Things You Need to Know About Deepti Sati Lyrical Touch Apart from being a professional Karnatic and Bharatanatyam dancer, she’s quite adept with a guitar. Valentino Valentine She loves Valentino and would not mind peeking into this designer’s wardrobe to wear a few of his dresses. Comic Punch She think the cartoons, Tom and Jerry and Popeye are still classics. That’s so 40’s She has celebrity crushes on actors like George Clooney and of course the charming Richard Gere. Back to Black While everyone loves kung fu fighting you would be surprised to know, she’s got a black belt in Karate. Kudos to her father who pushed her to try something adventurous.

Chilling with Villains 4 movie villains you would want to travel with.
Firdouz Hameed
“Mogambo kush hua”-Amrish Puri in Mr.India. Neuschwanstein is situated on a rugged hill near Füssen in southwest Bavaria, Germany. It is the most photographed building in Germany. If ever I am going to visit the land of Hitler, I’m bringing along with me some kickass back-up. “Hail Mogambo,” is how his subordinates salute him. Mogambo is THE most powerful villain of Indian films and Neuschwanstein will make him feel at home. This fairy tale like monument has the power to mesmerize even the baddest villain on the face of the earth!
“ Jo dar gaya, samjo margaya” -Amjad Khan in Sholay. Jog falls in Karnataka is the largest waterfall in India. A man like me has poor directional skills. Now if I have to find my way through a beautiful primeval forest then who better than to have beside other than a dacoit who has spent an eternity in verdant landscapes. I’ll be safe no matter how thick the forest gets. And maybe this will cheer Gabbar too.
“Allah re jism-e-yaar ki khoobi ke khud-ba-khud ”-Danny Danzongpa in Andhaa Kaanoon. Enticed by the alluring snow peaks of Kanchenjunga overlooking the hill town, the beautiful tea gardens , the charming Himalayan toy train negotiating its way through the mountains - Darjeeling is a wonderful place to visit. Who else other than the most stylish villain of Bollywood, Danny Denzongpa to go with? Danny is also the local boy there as he did his education from here. Perhaps he can show me some undiscovered gems of Darjeeling.
“Hello Mr Pereira”-Jose Prakash, in Love in SIngapore. The man might be bad but, he’s as classy and sophisticated as they come. If I’m to suit up for Milan—Jose Prakash is my man. This antagonist of Malayalam films can maybe teach me a thing or two about a glamorous nightlife and how to impress the ladies. The guy is not to be fiddled with as he is deadly. Milan better watch out for us or he will feed you to the crocodiles.

Channeling the Mahatma Artist Riyas Komu frames a revolutionary Gandhi in Fort Kochi.
O
Maria John
Arun Menon
n International Worker’s Day, Artist Riyas Komu has conceived a revolutionary figure in a different perspective. Frames of red with a ‘Che Guevera-esque’ Gandhi occupy the walls of Kashi Art Gallery. Gandhi from 1931 grins, looking ahead at the future and above him are verses which may seem far removed from his vision. Gandhi From Kochi is an oil on canvas artwork that asks you to reflect on what is important and find connections between seemingly unrelated things. Komu uproots Gandhi from the familiar and delivers him with the words, perception, violence, victim, fear and control. It is upto us to remember the premise that brought the Mahatma to
the forefront and not forget his true mission. In Stoned Goddesses, the artist addresses the various milestones in India’s history. Set in stone they are to be read with reflection, literally, as they directly or indirectly influence us as individuals or as a community.
Kochi Falls Prey to Rock-aholism M The show that had the city on its feet on Labor day.
Joseph Mathew
ay Day turned out to be one of Kochi’s unforgettable nights as some of the greatest names in Indian Rock music came together for “Kochi Rock On” at Gokulam Convention Centre. The fund-raiser organised by JT PAC saw the audience turn up well in advance, brimming with excitement since this was the first time that bands such as Avial and Motherjane were playing at the same arena in Kochi. Surprisingly, the crowd was a complete goulash of young and old, Malayalees and nonMalayalees. The show was kicked off by Aathma, a Bangalore based band with a couple of its members hailing right here from Kochi. They set the mood for the evening with a few of
14
JTPAC
their original compositions in Malayalam, Hindi and Kannada. The Indian funk music was just the right remedy to get the audience from a snooze onto their feet and ready for the next band. Though carnatic rock is not the easiest thing for most people to digest, Agam managed to shatter all preconceptions with a continuous barrage of mesmerizing, almost hypnotic tunes. There could not have been a more perfect stage set-up for the return from hibernation of the old boys of Kochi, Motherjane. The assemblage needed some time to recoup after this performance and happily, this was provided when the long line-up of Thaikkudam Bridge started their sound check. After this act, it seemed that Avial would have a hard time
matching up to it, not to mention surpassing it. However, once the lead singer and lungi aficionado Tony John got up to the microphone and said “Namaskaaram”, every single person was instantly aware that this was going to be in a different league altogether. Each of the founders of the alternative Malayali rock genre were musical virtuosos on their own but what was more impressive was how they collaborated together to make great music. This was indeed, a night to remember.

There is also a Kochi in Shikoku island, Japan. There are no similarities between the two cities other than maybe for the fact that both cities have a coastline and their famous dish is fish.

Frozen Fun Five reasons to head to the Sparky’s ice rink this month.
D
o you remember Princess Anna gliding through the ice and snow and just having a great time with Olaf in the Oscar winning movie Frozen? Such fantasies for us tropical dwellers may have seemed beyond reach. Not anymore, as you can skate away without fear of any blizzards at Sparky’s, Lulu Mall. Sparky’s had been really buzzing this summer and will continue to be through the next season. The holidays are almost over, but the fun continues at Sparky’s. The monsoon will hit the city soon and this is even more excuse for your playtime to move indoors. Stay out of the cold, but stay cool at the ice rink. Make friends and have a good time. Skating is a great way to meet people and laugh over a few tumbles and falls.

It’s a fun activity for the whole family as you can learn something new together and help each other out. You will definitely have some great memories to take back home. If the gym is too boring for you, then you should hit the ice rink. Skating is great to tone your legs. There are a lot of moves that you have to do to balance, break, turn, stay still and glide through the ice. It is a great cardio workout and doesn’t put stress your joints. Step up your balance and coordination with skating. Sparky’s ice rink is the only one in Kerala. Be a part of something exciting and different. Don’t worry if you don’t know how to skate, because Sparky’s has dedicated people to teach you and also offer classes.

If we haven’t mentioned this already, ice skating is so much fun! Lace up your skates, tighten your helmets and just hit the rink to have an amazing time. Once you get a hang of it, there is no going back. Glide, slide, flip and turn on frozen water. It is a great activity and enjoy it throughout the year at Sparky’s.
