A Christmas Dilemma! When it comes to Christmas hampers, does homemade work better?
Rheanna Mathews
C
gourmetbasket.com
hristmas gifts are a tradition and hampers filled to the brim with goodies have a special charm all their own. I mean, who doesn’t like to open a gift and find a dozen more tiny pretty things inside? There’s absolutely no doubt. Christmas hampers rank way up there when it’s time to think of gifts for your near and dear.
hampers need to be. Let’s be honest, festive seasons are hell on our pockets and for those of us with mouths to feed (including our own), saving wherever possible seems a very commendable pursuit. And third, building your own set of gift hampers is so much fun, especially if you enjoy all things crafty and DIY..
But the question remains, what kind of hamper do you give them? Do you get them the really expensive kind filled to the brim with luxurious sweetmeats and delicious wines and is store-bought? Or do you go for the more personalized option, tailoring each hamper to the tastes of the recipient? One has to confess, in this writer's case, the second idea holds more sway.
Moving on, what do homemade hampers have in common with adorable supervillains? Presentation! This is key if you want to make an impression. Use traditional woven baskets for that touch of local charm and yards of ribbon to give it that festive air.
First of all, a personalised gift hamper means you put thought into it, and whoever the gift is meant for shall definitely realize this. Which also means, extra warm tinglies and fuzzy feelings at Christmas time. Secondly, and perhaps slightly more enticingly, you get to choose how expensive your homemade
cdn2.bigcommerce.com
When it comes to a filling your hamper, your imagination’s the limit. Go homemade all the way and make all the edible goodies yourself, which means cakes, chocolates and giant, chunky cookies apart from the wine (made with your grandmother’s recipe, maybe?). Throw in some bright fruit and you’re halfway there. Add a personalised coffee mug for that coffee lover you know. “We can create mugs suited to the customers’ tastes.” Rafeek, Floweringo Candles, especially scented ones, are almost always a treat. “ We make Christmas themed candles with christmas quotes sometimes, and we also do candle arrangements.” Ann Alice, Petal Touch
A dry fruit mix, and some spices for that homebaking enthusiast. “We have quality ingredients at Bakers, and if you need advice regarding what makes the best mixes we’re here to help.” Reghu, Bakers Traders Handmade soap for the unashamed hedonist. “I’m designing a soap for Christmas with special ingredients” Sarah Jane John, The FIG And a couple of santa stockings and hats, fluffy socks and a homemade Christmas wreath to complete it. “ We’ve made products with toda embroidery for Christmas, and wreaths made out of green and red bangles. We also have the usual Christmas colour themed cushion covers, runners and tree ornaments.” Lisa, Handmade Handmade A Christmas wreath to elevate your hamper to the next level. “ We have Christmas wreaths and a number of other products. Come take a look.” Leena, Wudapple The list is potentially endless. Artfully place a few painted pine cones, if you can get them (painted gold or in glitter, if you can manage it), and some shiny baubles here and there.. Add a card with the season’s greetings and you’re done. Your personalised homemade Christmas hamper is sure to be a hit!

Kochi Dances Its Way to Fitness And these five women are the vanguard of the dance fitness mania that has gripped the city
Z
Rheanna Mathews

umba, a dance fitness program with Colombian roots, has been a fixture in Kochi for years now, all thanks to some phenomenal women whose dance fitness classes have been drawing people in droves. WtzupKochi spoke to these women who have proven that though they juggle various roles in life, they manage to keep their enthusiasm for this fitness form alive with their drive and passion.
Anju Antony “I’ve noticed that once they become mothers, women just tend to give up on their fitness. Coming here seems to have given them renewed confidence in themselves. When you’re fit, you just feel good about yourself and your body.” Passion The Fitness Studio
Shweta Singh “When people come to class, they’re very hesitant, they don’t think they can dance, they think they have two left feet and dancing with so many people, when there are so many others watching you, a lot of them are very conscious about that. But once they start classes, they start to grow into it.They have much more stamina. I find them to be more energetic and confident as well.” Freelance Zumba Instructor
Shiny Justine “After sustaining a injury that should’ve been the lowest point in my life, I made up my mind to reclaim my lost energy and health.I did yoga for nearly 8 months and then moved on to doing aerobics and strength training as I started getting fitter. As a result,I lost 29 kg in a year.” JuztShine Family Fitness Studio
Arunima Gupta “With Zumba, you can’t help but lose weight. That’s like a mantra. So that’s something that affects people positively. They come out at the end of the class charged and with a lot of positivity” The Floor
Ritu Paul “A unique thing about Bollyfit is that it is essentially “onesize-fits-all”. It is suitable for all ages and all fitness levels. The only prerequisite for Bollyfit classes is a love for Bollywood music” Bollyfit

Biennale On The Mind The third edition of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale is just around the river bend
Rheanna Mathews
What it is Taking its name from Italian and modelled after the original Venice Biennale, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale (KMB) is an international exhibition of contemporary art, held every other year with installations at various heritage buildings in Fort Kochi-Mattancherry and Ernakulam. This is the third edition of the KMB.
Theme Forming in the pupil of an eye This year’s theme was chosen to bring to focus the fluid notions of making and performance, of imagination, multiplicity and tradition; to make one ponder the process of creation and the forces that shape it, to search for a way to look at things. The mythic notion of the 'land of seven rivers' has lent the flowing imagery that underlies this year's theme. Tradition is the core focus of this biennale which explores the multiplicity of perspectives when it comes to tradition in a changing, yet
continuous society such as ours. Curator Sudarshan Shetty An artist of international renown, Shetty was born in Mangalore but is based in Chembur, Mumbai. He has held exhibitions, solo and otherwise, the world over, most notably at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, the Tate Modern and La Centre Pompidouand. This edition of the KMB shall be his first curatorial venture. Kerala’s Own At KMB 2016 There are 36 Indian artists from across the country participating in the Biennale, including works by master cartoonist E.P. Unny, native of Palakkad and eminent Malayalam litterateur Anand, originally from Trissur.

ith its penchant for rapid growth, Kochi has become a city no one wants to move out of. In fact it has become the current trend for ex-kochiites to move back. The effervescent food culture and thriving art and music scene are just a few of its great aspects. But for so many who have lived here their whole lives, they are yet to know the beauty of the city. Wtzupkochi City Awards started from this thought to bring to light all of the best things that Kochi has to offer. From the lushly manicured lawns of the in-city residential area in Panampilly Nagar to picturesque locations in Fort Kochi, Kochi is a mixture of many things. There are many who spend their weekends staying in, but

The seven new darlings of Malayalam cinema share the tale of Aanandam and beyond Rheanna Mathews

n the wake of the movie’s success, the seven actors in starring roles have found themselves in the spotlight and days into the release of Aanandam, one is curious to know how the success has altered their the lives. Thomas: There are times when we have gone to colleges and they were shouting and so full of energy. I thought it’d last for maybe ten minutes, but it went on full throttle the entire time we were there. I thought, “Wow, that’s for us”. It felt good. Vishak: The response has been overwhelming. I mean, we did give the movie our all, and we had the pleasure of visiting many colleges over the past few weeks, but not once did we expect this level of response. Siddhi: The response has been amazing. The target audience was actually collegegoing kids and those who’d just passed out, but the movie’s had a wider reach than that. I’ve had little kids, 4 and 5 year olds, coming up to me and saying that they enjoyed the movie. Roshan: I’ve been an actor for six years and I was never someone held up as an example in the family. this, a Vineeth Sreenivasan production, has definitely earned me a measure of respect. And a lot of people who had fallen out of life have reached out, and I’m really thankful about that. Anarkali: People who hardly spoke to me in school have been calling and trying to connect through facebook and other social media. Annu: Some people actually come up to me and call me Tattoo Mol. It makes me so happy that they’re responding this way. Arun: It’s unheard of in Malayalam cinema, a movie set with such a young cast and crew. Ganeshettan, Vineethettan and Anendettan were such great help throughout and every one stood for each other and that contributed a lot to the success of the movie.
