Bienvenido B
arranquilla no es una ciudad convencional. Comenzando con su historia. Los estudiosos aún no se ponen de acuerdo sobre los detalles de su fundación. Antes se creía que el ‘Sitio de las Barrancas de San Nicolás’ fue poblado en sus inicios por ganaderos de las vecinas poblaciones de Baranoa y Galapa, quienes habrían hallado el lugar ideal en la intersección geográfica del mar Caribe con el río Magdalena. Otras teorías históricas han surgido con igual credibilidad, al punto de que, hoy por hoy, es imposible determinar a ciencia cierta el origen de esta ciudad que en el siglo XXI es habitada por más de dos millones de personas. Los barranquilleros han optado más bien por conmemorar la fecha en que la Puerta de Oro de Colombia fue “erigida en villa”, el 7 de abril de 1813. Barranquilla alberga 14 hitos históricos de la nación colombiana, entre ellos cuna de la aviación, del fútbol, del correo y de la radiodifusión. Se dice que por el muelle de Puerto Colombia, a 20 kilómetros de Barranquilla, ingresó la civilización al país. Dicho muelle, que aún permanece en pie como un gran atractivo turístico, fue reemplazado por el canal navegable que penetra tierra adentro por el río Magdalena. 6 BARRANQUILLA
Barranquilla es hoy una ciudad cosmopolita que ofrece los más modernos servicios públicos y de telecomunicaciones, pero que simultáneamente conserva algunos vestigios de los tiempos en que fue un pequeño pueblo del Caribe. El tradicional barrio El Prado exhibe intactas todavía algunas de las mansiones de diversos estilos arquitectónicos, que representan los tiempos en que se forjó la ciudad. A su pujanza ancestral se suma la alegría y la creatividad innatas de sus gentes, que canalizan esas virtudes a través del Carnaval de Barranquilla, única festividad colombiana declarada Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad. Dichas características se advierten en algunos de los barranquilleros más representativos de su talante: la compositora Estercita Forero, llamada ‘La novia de Barranquilla’; las diseñadoras Amalín de Hazbún y Silvia Tcherassi; las actrices Angie Cepeda y Sofía Vergara; y la gran cantante internacional Shakira. Barranquilla es también epicentro de uno de los más representativos movimientos literarios del siglo XX, el denominado ‘Grupo Barranquilla’, del cual hicieron parte artistas de la talla del Premio Nobel de Literatura Gabriel García Márquez y el pintor Alejandro Obregón.

arranquilla is not a conventional city. Start by its history. Academics still do not agree on the details of the city’s founding. It was tradition to think initially that cattle growers of the nearby towns of Baranoa and Galapa, whose cattle instinctively sounded out a place to quench their thirst, populated the “Site of the Saint Nicholas Ravines”. They would have found the ideal place at the geographical intersection of the Caribbean Sea with the Magdalena River. Other equally credible theories have arisen, to the point that today it is impossible to truthfully determine the origin of this city, whose population, in the 21st century, exceeds two million. The Barranquilleros have opted better for commemorating the date the city was “elevated into a town” on 7 April 1813. Even so, and in spite of the historic gap that seems to exist in its basic origins, Barranquilla has been at the forefront, considered “Colombia’s Golden Gate”. This city holds 14 historic Colombian national landmarks, among them the birth of aviation, soccer, postal service and radio broadcasting. They say that near the Puerto Colombia dock, 12 miles from Barranquilla, civilization entered the country. This dock, still standing –like a great tourist attraction–, was replaced by a navigable channel that penetrates inland deeply by the Magdalena River.
Barranquilla today is an industrial, commercial and port capital, a cosmopolitan city offering the most modern public and telecommunication services, all the while conserving some vestige of the time it was a town on the Caribbean, abounding in ambition. The traditional El Prado neighborhood exhibits intact some of the mansions of diverse architectural styles that are a reflection of the years the thriving city was forged on the banks of sea and river. Its ancestral boost teams up to the innate joy and creativity of its people, channeling these virtues throughout the Barranquilla Carnival, sole Colombian festival proclaimed Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. These traits are evident in some of the most representative Barranquilleros: composer Esthercita Forero, considered “Barranquilla’s bride”; designers Amalín de Hazbún and Silvia Tcherassi; actresses Angie Cepeda and Sofía Vergara; and renowned international singer-songwriter Shakira. Barranquilla is also the center of one of the most representative literary movements in the 20th century: the “Barranquilla Group”. Part of this were artists of the stature of Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García-Márquez and painter Alejandro Obregón. BARRANQUILLA 9

Barranquilla es Carnaval Entre comparsas, marimondas, reinas y disfraces por doquier, el Carnaval de Barranquilla es quizá la fiesta más querida por los colombianos. Un derroche de color que hoy es Patrimonio Oral e Inmaterial de la Humanidad.
S
i no fuera obligatorio precisar la fecha exacta en que se inicia el Carnaval, podría decirse que éste palpita de tal manera en el corazón de la gente de Barranquilla que no comienza ni termina nunca. No obstante, aquí se trata de precisar. Por eso, hay que decir que el Carnaval de Barranquilla comienza el sábado inmediatamente anterior al ritual católico del Miércoles de Ceniza. En ese sábado de Carnaval, primer día de la fiesta, Barranquilla amanece invadida de una energía arrolladora. Resulta imposible describirla, como quiera que es un intangible que sólo podría procesarse en el ámbito de las emociones, pero definitivamente está allí, descomunal y expansiva, entre olores a ron de alambique, a la parafina quemada de la cumbia, a los sudores de la multitud regocijada, al raso resplandeciente de los disfraces, a las fritangas humeantes de los andenes, 10 BARRANQUILLA
a la harina que empolvará cada instante de la fiesta, al río Magdalena que agoniza silencioso junto a la algarabía de los desfiles, a la fragancia fina de las reinas que saludan desde sus carrozas. Porque el Carnaval ha sido siempre —por paradójico que parezca— escenario de las más encendidas polémicas: que si los desfiles deben celebrarse en la Vía 40 —a lo largo del río— o en la Carrera 44, en medio de la ciudad; que si las danzas modernas, que hacen alusión a otros carnavales como el de Río de Janeiro, son un burdo extranjerismo o una evidencia del exuberante talento local; que si a un francés se le debe permitir encabezar la comparsa más tradicional del Carnaval; que si la reina de turno baila como debe bailar una Reina del Carnaval; que si ron o aguardiente; que si salsa, vallenato o cumbia… Son discusiones eternas, que suelen trasladarse a los titulares de los periódicos,

CU LT U R A pero que se conservan siempre dentro de la buena tinaja de la polémica sana. De tantas interminables polémicas, ninguna aloja tantos misterios como la del origen del Carnaval de Barranquilla. Definitivamente, las Fiestas de Carnaval son de origen europeo y fueron introducidas a América por españoles y portugueses, en una herencia que se remonta al mismo Dionisos, hijo travieso de Zeus, proclive a
embriagarse con su corte de sátiros y ninfas en la Grecia del Olimpo. El antecedente más próximo del Carnaval de Barranquilla es una fiesta de esclavos que se efectuaba en la Cartagena de la Colonia. En las fechas anteriores al Miércoles de Ceniza aparecían los negros con instrumentos africanos y disfraces, bailando y cantando en la calle. La historia del Carnaval de Barranquilla en sí, está relacionada con el desarrollo
vertiginoso que vivió la ciudad en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. No obstante, y por más indagaciones que han hecho investigadores como Nina Friedmann y Mirta Vuelvas, ha sido simplemente imposible ubicar la fecha exacta en que nació el Carnaval de Barranquilla, aunque con toda certeza sus primeras manifestaciones tuvieron lugar en el último cuarto del XIX, mientras que se ha confirmado que el primer Rey Momo —símbolo de la máscara— surgió en 1888. Desde allí, hasta los tiempos presentes, el Carnaval de Barranquilla ha sido una manifestación artística que porta, en el código genético de cada danza, comparsa, disfraz, cumbiamba, comedia o letanía, una realidad asociada a la vida misma. Realidades hay muchas: la fauna regional ha inspirado expresiones como la ‘Danza del Caimán’, originada en Ciénaga, y que no es otra cosa que la evocación trágica de los hechos acaecidos en un 20 de enero, día de San Sebastián, cuando un gigantesco reptil se devoró a una niña que lavaba ropa en el caño; o la ‘Danza de los Coyongos’, en referencia a esta ave del río, con su estribillo legendario:
“Quiera Dios que la cansada después de tantos placeres no se antojen las mujeres de usar mi pluma rosada” Pero más allá de las evocaciones a la fauna y a las tradiciones del campo, el Carnaval es prolífico en alusiones a los más recónditos temores del ser humano. Es el caso de la ‘Danza de los Diablos’, que nació en 1930 con Marcial Lavalle. Según Apolinar Polo, actual director de 12 BARRANQUILLA

esa danza, su antepasado Lavalle “bailaba al compás rítmico de la flauta de millo y la caja, mientras saltaba por encima de botellas con gráciles movimientos acrobáticos, llevando en sus zapatos filosos cuchillos como espuelas, al tiempo que lanzaba lenguas de fuego por la boca”. Así se originó una de las más vistosas manifestaciones artísticas del Carnaval de Barranquilla, la ‘Danza de los Diablos’ que desfilan en la llamada ‘Batalla de Flores’ y ‘Gran Parada’, al mando de Polo, quien encarna la tercera generación de este patrimonio familiar, con sede en la población de Sabanalarga.
Y hay múltiples maneras de gozarlo: a través del precarnaval, que se inicia a finales de diciembre y que sólo termina el sábado, cuando se inicia la fiesta grande; o a través de los dos primeros desfiles en la Vía 40, que se pueden presenciar desde cómodas graderías; o través de las famosas casetas, inmensas y multitudinarias, y en las que se presentan las orquestas internacionales del momento; o del Festival de Orquestas, una maratón de constelaciones de la música que tiene lugar lunes y martes en uno de los estadios de la ciudad; o las fiestas diurnas de los barrios; o el entierro de ‘Joselito Carnaval’, el pelele que simboliza las fiestas.

Barranquilla is Carnival Amidst dance troupes, queens and costumes all around, the Carnival of Barranquilla is perhaps the most beloved party of all for Colombians. Color overflows in what today is a World Heritage.
I
t weren’t mandatory to single out the exact date that the Carnival begins, you could say it starts beating in Barranquilleros’ hearts in such a way that it really does not start or end at all. However, since we are trying to pinpoint the day, we must say that the Barranquilla Carnival starts the Saturday immediately before the catholic ritual of Ash Wednesday. That Carnival Saturday, the first day of festivities, Barranquilla awakens invaded by overwhelming energy. It is impossible to describe it –if you will– since it’s an intangible that can only be processed in the realm of emotions. But it’s definitely there, massive and sprawling, amidst smells of distilled rum, the spent cumbia candle, the sweat of the exhilarated multitude, the shiny satin of the costumes, the steaming hot sidewalk fries, the flour that will dust BARRANQUILLA 15
each instant of the partying, the Magdalena River silently agonizing alongside the commotion of the parades, the fine fragrance of the beauty queens greeting the multitude from their coaches. Because the Carnival has always been –no matter the paradox– scenario of the most heated debates: whether the parades ought to take place on Route 40, skirting the river, or on 44th St, in the middle of the city; whether modern dance –evoking other 16 BARRANQUILLA
Carnivals like Rio’s– are gross imports or evidence of exuberant local talent; whether a Frenchman should be allowed to head the most traditional Carnival dance group; whether the queen of that year dances as a Carnival Queen ought; whether rum or aguardiente (licorice liquor); salsa, cumbia or vallenato (3 local rhythms). These ageold questions find their way into the newspaper headlines yet still remain brewing in the local pot of polemic.
Of all the incessant contention, none is as mysterious as that of its origins. Definitely, the Carnival festivities are European in origin. Spaniards and Portuguese introduced them into America, inherited directly from Dionysus. This misbehaving son of Zeus was inclined toward drunkenness, all the while hailed by his court of satyrs and nymphs in Olympus’s Greece. A closer antecedent to the Barranquilla Carnival is a slave party that was put together in Cartagena during Colonial times. In the dates prior to Ash Wednesday, the black population hit the scene with their African instruments and costumes, dancing and singing in the streets. The history of the Barranquilla Carnival is related to the city’s accelerated development in the second half of the 19th century However, and regardless of the studies researchers like Nina Friedman and Mirta Vuelvas have undergone, it has been absolutely impossible to pin point the exact date the Barranquilla Carnival began. Yet, in all certainty, its first manifestations took place the end of the 19th century, while it has been confirmed that the first King Momo –symbol of the mask– arose in 1888. From then on, the Barranquilla Carnival has been the artistic manifestation that carries within it, a reality consistent with life itself, in the genetic code of each dancer, dance group, costume, cumbia party, comedy or invocation. Many realities are apparent: the regional fauna has inspired expressions like the Alligator Dance, inspired in the city of Cienaga and which is none other than the tragic association of the events that took place on 20 January, Saint Sebastian Day,

when a gigantic reptile devoured a girl washing clothes in the creek; or the Dance of the Coyongos, referring to this river bird, with its legendary refrain:
I hope to God that the weary Following such pleasure and bliss Women reckon and be amiss Of my pink plume make use dearly. But beyond evocation of fauna and the tradition of the land, the Carnival is prolific in touching on human’s most hidden fears. Take, for example, the Devils’ Dance, started in 1930 with Marcial Lavalle. According to Apolinar Polo, current dance director, his predecessor Lavalle “…danced to the rhythm of the reed flute and caja drum while leaping over bottles with graceful acrobatic movements, carrying in his shoes sharp spur-like knives while expelling tongues of fire from his mouth”. This is how one of the most artistic manifestations of the Barranquilla Carnival began: the Devils’ Dance. They participate in the Battle of the Flowers procession and in the Great Parade, headed by Polo, who incarnates the third generation of this family heritage, based in Sabanalarga. And there are plenty of ways of relishing it: during the pre Carnival, starting the end of December with a great variety of events and only ending on that Saturday when the great party starts; or on the first two parades on Route 40 witnessed from comfortable stands; or by famous native dance halls, enormous and populous, and in which international orchestras of the moment perform; or the tropical orchestra festival, a mara-
thon of music stars which takes place on Mondays and Tuesdays in one of the city stadiums; or the day parties in the neighborhoods –barrios-; or Carnival Joey’s funeral (the Carnival dummy – symbol of the festivities). So, an entire city emerges as a vibrant compendium of the Caribbean, with its folkloric exuberance, its pulsing stories, and its mythic reality, arms open wide to the visitor.

Barranquilla es Turismo Mar, río, tierra y la gran ciudad. Una atractiva travesía turística que incluye museos, jardín botánico, un hermoso barrio de antaño, y escenarios naturales a los alrededores de la que fuera la Puerta de Oro de Colombia.
A
lguna vez un periodista norteamericano, que cubría un evento en Barranquilla, definía a la ciudad como “rarely charming”, es decir, “extrañamente encantadora”. “Raramente encantadora” significa que la capital del Atlántico —además capital no oficial del Caribe colombiano—, posee particularidades que van surgiendo en cada bocacalle, en cada esquina, en cada rincón y que tienen en su nativo tradicional a su principal exponente. Aparte de eso, Barranquilla ofrece múltiples atractivos.
Jardín Zoológico Su Jardín Zoológico es el más original de Colombia, con más de 500 habitantes y 140 especies, entre ellos elefantes, chimpancés, fieras, aves y un sinnúmero de curiosos ejemplares, todo en medio de un ambiente de frescura y exuberante vegetación.

En lo que ha sido hoy epicentro del despertar arquitectónico de Barranquilla, ya se abrieron las puertas de la primera etapa del Parque Cultural del Caribe, proyecto que incluye en el futuro una gigantesca plaza de diez mil metros cuadrados. Ya está en funcionamiento parte del edificio–museo, una torre vanguardista que alberga lo más representativo de la historia y el presente de la región caribe.

Castillo de Salgar
La capital industrial, cultural y comercial del Caribe colombiano ofrece un amplio abanico de posibilidades turísticas que abarcan desde historia hasta balnearios populares.
Su color ladrillo encendido contrasta con el pastel del mar en Salgar. La imponente edificación está situada sobre un barranco, bajo el cual nace y muere el Caribe impetuoso, avistable desde allí en una panorámica de casi 180 grados. El castillo nació como un cuartelillo militar en el punto estratégico del Puerto de Sabanilla, donde solían fondear los barcos contrabandistas que buscaban la entrada del río Magdalena, para así ingresar al país. A finales de los años 70, la edificación quedó abandonada y así estuvo durante varios años. Hoy es un centro social.

culturales, eran habituales contertulios, además de García Márquez, Cepeda Samudio y Obregón, los escritores Germán Vargas y Alfonso Fuenmayor, el pintor Orlando Rivera, conocido como ‘Figurita’, y el mentor de esta generación, el llamado ‘Sabio catalán’, Ramón Vinyes. Aunque La Cueva mantiene intacta la mayor parte de su estructura, incluyendo el calado de diagonales de madera que marca su fachada y ambienta la terraza de la barra, sus constructores emprendieron una gran obra de adecuación y restauración. La barra, que en los tiempos de la tertulia era de madera ordinaria, ha sido reconstruida en grande. Allí mismo, junto a la barra, para deleite de niños, un antiguo baúl abierto muestra un humeante bloque de hielo de color azul. A un lado de la barra, los visitantes pueden conocer, tal cual
fue pintado, el mural de Alejandro Obregón, con los dos balazos que recibió en medio del agitado devenir de la tertulia. En ambiente cerrado con aire acondicionado, funciona un restaurante y una pequeña tienda de mercancías alusivas a todo lo que allí se aloja.
el oriental, constituyen obras inmensas de la ingeniería. Tras recorrer el tajamar entre piedras, llega a la inmensa boca, donde el mar y el río chocan convulsionadamente. También en esa zona de la ciudad queda Las Flores, lugar de múltiples restaurantes autóctonos a la orilla del río.
Museo Romántico
LOS TRES CORREDORES
Localizado en una de las legendarias casa–quintas de El Prado, señorial y tradicional barrio de arquitectura republicana. El museo alberga la historia de los 14 hitos de la ciudad, e incluye piezas de los más representativos personajes de la Barranquilla antigua y moderna.
Los alrededores de Barranquilla también están llenos de encantos. El departamento del Atlántico ha sido dividido en tres corredores que merecen ser recorridos. El Corredor del Mar tiene como punto central al municipio de Puerto Colombia, a orillas del mar Caribe. Allí está el muelle, el más largo del mundo en su género, con cerca de un kilómetro de longitud. El turista puede caminar por la sólida estructura de concreto, con las aguas impetuosas del Caribe a lado y lado, hasta la misma punta, donde atracaban los barcos hace más de un siglo.
Bocas de Ceniza Un tren turístico llega hasta el punto vital de la nación donde se encuentran el río Magdalena y el mar Caribe, denominado Bocas de Ceniza. El tren circula diez kilómetros a través del tajamar occidental que, junto con

Su privilegiada posición de puerto marítimo y fluvial le regala a propios y extraños múltiples posibilidades de diversión, ya en tierra, ya en agua.

Varios balnearios se incluyen en este corredor: el mismo Puerto Colombia, lleno de casetas populares; Salgar, cuyos quioscos con techo de paja, a la orilla del mar, ofrecen la tradicional mojarra frita; Pradomar, y su centro social Kilimanjaro, punto de actividades de los surfistas de Barranquilla y además restaurante–bar y pista de baile, todo en medio del rugido de las olas; Puerto Velero, playa más retirada apta para el velerismo y otros deportes náuticos. También en ese corredor está Juan de Acosta, cuyo cementerio alberga, muy bien protegida, una de las más representativas obras del pintor Alejandro Obregón. Al final del corredor oceánico, por la autopista al mar, está la Ciénaga del Totumo,
con su volcán de aguas medicinales azufradas; y el Mirador del Cielo, un espléndido punto en lo alto de una loma, en el municipio de Tubará, centro de devoción mariana y desde el cual puede apreciarse una de las mejores vistas de Colombia. El Corredor de la Tierra incluye la visita a Usiacurí, población de fresco ambiente, emporio de las más creativas artesanías. Las tejedoras de Usiacurí procesan la palma de iraca y la convierten en utensilios y artículos, que bien pueden constituir un económico y significativo recuerdo de viaje. En la población de Baranoa se escenifica cada seis de enero la denominada ‘Loa’, vívida representación teatral de la visita de los Reyes Magos. También en esa población, en el centro, está ubicada la casa del pintor Orlando Rivera ‘Figurita’, con su valioso mural, una reflexión sobre el hombre, su pasado y su futuro. El tercero de los corredores es el del río Magdalena, cuyas poblaciones celebran varias de las festividades típicamente ribereñas, con la famosa Rueda de la Cumbia y otras expresiones de ese singular folclor. En Sabanagrande está ubicado el paradisiaco lugar conocido como ‘Lagos de Sabanagrande’ y allí muy cerca el Parque Cocodrilia, dedicado a mostrar la cría de estos reptiles. Barranquilla is Tourism Sea, river, land and the great city. An attractive tourist sojourn that includes museums, a botanical garden, a lovely neighborhood of yesteryear and natural sceneries surrounding what once was Colombia’s Golden Gate.
O
nce, an American journalist covering an event in Barranquilla defined the city as “rarely charming”. “Rarely charming” means that the capital of the Atlantico province –also unofficial capital of the Colombian Caribbean– has particularities that emerge in every intersection and corner, boosted primarily by their local natives. Besides, Barranquilla has multiple attractions. The zoo is the most original in Colombia with over 500 inhabitants and 140 species, with elephants, chimpanzees, wild animals, birds and an array of singular examples, all in the midst of fresh and exuberant vegetation.
Cultural Park of the Caribbean In what is now the epicenter of Barranquilla architecture, the doors to the first stage of Cultural Park of the Caribbean have
opened. This project features a gigantic 33,000 sq ft square in the future. Part of the building-museum is already at work: the vanguard tower is host to what is most representative in the history and in the present of the Caribbean region.
Salgar Another attraction is the Salgar Castle. Its flamboyant brick color contrasts with the pastel sea in Salgar. The imposing building overlooks a cliff, under which the impetuous Caribbean emerges and dies, all the while towering over an almost 180º breathtaking panoramic view. In truth, the “Castle” is not such. It originated as a small military barracks, a strategic point at Sabanilla Port where contraband ships used to anchor, awaiting access to the Magdalena River in order to sneak into Colombia. By the end of the 70’s, the old building was abandoned and it remained so for a
few more years. Today, the so-called castle is an important social center.
La Cueva Barranquilla also features the just restored “La Cueva” tavern, today transformed into a cultural events center. The habitual gatherers, García Márquez, Cepeda Samudio and Obregón, writers Germán Vargas and Alfonso Fuenmayor, painter Orlando Rivera, known as “Statuette”, and this generation’s mentor, Ramón Vinyes called the “Catalunia Wiseman”. Although for the main part, La Cueva’s structure is still intact, including the diagonal openwork wood that frames the façade and that heats up the bar terrace, its builders embarked upon a great adaptation and restoration project. The bar, which in times of the literary gatherings had been crafted in common wood, is now regally restored. And right there, next to the bar –to the children’s glee– an old trunk, open, features BARRANQUILLA 25
T0URISM a smoking block of blue ice. At one side of the bar, visitors can gaze upon Alejandro Obregon’s mural, just as it was painted, and with the two bullet holes it got in one effervescent literary gathering evening. In an air-conditioned environment we find a restaurant and a quaint shop with merchandise related to what is set there.
Romantic Museum Also open in Barranquilla is the Romantic Museum, established in one of the legendary manors in El Prado, stately and traditional neighborhood set in Republican style architecture. It accommodates the

A tourist train reaches the vital point where the Magdalena River and the Caribbean Sea meet, called Mouths of Ash. The train chugs some 6 miles through western breakwaters, which, together with the eastern ones, comprise colossal engineering feats. Once you cross the breakwaters among rocks, the train reaches the immense mouth where sea and river clash turbulently.
The Barranquilla outskirts are also charming. The Atlantico province has been divided in three corridors that warrant memory. The focal point of the “sea corridor” is the city of Puerto Colombia, on the Caribbean Sea side. The dock, today engaged almost only for tourism, is the longest in its genre: over half a mile long. ters on both sides toward the end of the construction, where ships used to dock until over a century ago. Various resorts spot this corridor: Puerto Colombia abounding in popular kiosks; Salgar whose thatched roof kiosks at the seaside feature the traditional fried mojarra (river fish); Pradomar and its Kilimanjaro social center –the place buzzing for Barranquilla surfers, and a restaurantbar with dance-floor, all in the midst of the roaring waves; Puerto Velero, a more secluded beach, apt for sailing and other water sports. Also in this corridor is Juan de Acosta, with the cemetery protecting one of the most representative works of artist Alejandro Obregon. At the end of the ocean corridor, on the sea highway, we find the Cienaga del Totumo (Gourd Lake) with its sulfurous medicinal water volcano. And Mirador del Cielo (Heaven’s Outlook), a splendid site topping a hill in the city of Tubara, center for Marian devotion and the best place for enjoying breathtaking views in Colombia.

The “land corridor” includes a visit to Usiacurí, a temperate climate town and emporium of the most creative handicrafts. The Usiacurí weavers process the iraca palm and fashion them into utensils and articles that easily become inexpensive and meaningful souvenirs. In the town of Baranoa, every 6th of January, a vivid theater enactment of the visit of the three kings, “Loa”, is performed. Also on this location, downtown, we find the house of artist Orlando Rivera “Statuette” and his treasured mural, a reflection on mankind, past and future. The third of the corridors is the Magdalena River, on which towns carry out several of the riverside festivals, showcas-
ing the cumbia (rhythm) wheel and other expressions of this singular folklore Sabanalarga is nestled within the paradisiacal location known as “Sabanalarga Lakes”. And very near is Crocodilia Park, dedicated to featuring the breeding of these reptiles. Nearby, in Santo Tomas, every Holy Friday, they put on the “flagellant procession”: pennants flogging themselves in view of the public coming in from Barranquilla and other cities. This custom has been questioned by the church and by the Santo Tomas professionals who view this as a barbaric tradition unworthy of being representative of the town’s values.

Buenavista was the departure point for urban expansion to the north, initiating downtown. The so-called commercial boom in Barranquilla of the new millennia also includes the great shopping complex of Almacenes Exito, Carrefour and soon, the Panorana mall, proposing the greatest comfort at the south of the city. La gran migración árabe, que se ha evidenciado en tiempos recientes en Barranquilla, ha hecho que florezca también la cocina de países como Líbano y Siria. Si se trata de probar todos estos platos, o al menos la mayoría de ellos, los restaurantes árabes ofrecen sus denominados ‘mixtos’, que pueden ser solicitados en diferentes tamaños. En cuanto a la comida italiana, Barranquilla es sede de uno de los más reconocidos restaurantes del país. Se trata de Nena Lela, que ofrece una gran variedad de pastas y platos de todas las regiones de Italia, preparados bajo la supervisión de su fundadora Carmen Nicolella de Mendoza. ue to its privileged geographical location, the point where the river meets the sea, the city has had a leading role in a great international and national immigration. This cosmopolitan spirit of the city has allowed for a great diversity of restaurants to flourish, reflecting the multiplicity of cultures that have arrived from other countries and from within Colombia. Naturally, the coastal and river nature of the city gives precedence to the exquisite delicacies of the Caribbean Sea and the Magdalena River. The Varadero restaurant, in exclusive Alto Prado neighborhood features snook in tamarind sauce; sautéed tuna in coconut sauce, bay leaf and balsamic sauce; jumbo shrimp in grape leaves: sweet and sour shrimp; and other Thai-sea cuisine. The city also has more popular level seafood restaurants like “Seafood Corral” and also famous –and informal– oyster or
cocktail houses spread throughout the city. Of these, the Picasso oyster house is the sensation. A place equally packed with people looking for wonders of the sea are the city beaches, especially Salgar, that has basic restaurants on the beach with the famous mojarra platter which entails that delicious white meat fish, with coconut rice and fried plantain. The river is home to two fish that are the basis of the local riverfront cuisine: the spiny bocachico, preferably served stewed; and the lisa (acanthopterygii), great for lisa rice, main dish in Barranquilla gastronomy. Other restaurants with renowned quality have achieved creating fusion in dishes from international cuisine with local products. The great Middle Eastern migration, which has taken place recently in Barranquilla, has made the cuisine of other countries like Lebanon and Syria flourish. There are various restaurants with dishes like Kibbe, Tabbule, grape leaf rolls, rice with almonds, chick-pea tahine, falafel, Shawarma, Marmahon and many others from the exuberant cuisine from that region of the world. But if we want to try all these dishes –or at least the majority of them-, “Mideastern” restaurants offer their mixed platters that can be ordered in different sizes. When it comes to Italian food, Barranquilla is home to one of the most renowned restaurants in the country. This is Nena Lela, with a great variety of pasta and dishes from all regions in Italy, prepared under the supervision of founder Carmen Nicolella de Mendoza. There are also other Italian restaurants with a homey feel, preparing the pasta on site, with a taste of hearth and very characteristic. Grilled meat is another city specialty. Buffalo Grill has excellent cuts in their round steak, tenderloin, steaks, and pork chops, as well as Tex-Mex specialties like fajitas, burritos and enchiladas. Also in meat, renowned tradition in town, the exclusive Steak House restaurant is the must. Open-air places feature one of the deeply rooted Barranquilla traditions, as is El Merendero, with grilled meat in the flashy thatched-roof kiosks. In international food, Devis Cocina Internacional restaurant’s prestige is outstanding. In recent years, Barranquilla has witnessed the outpouring of street fast-food offers, with a touch of local originality.

Tradicionalmente la ciudad ha sido sede de sitios legendarios en todos los niveles, desde la llamada zona roja de La charanga, inmortalizada por Gabriel García Márquez en su última novela: Memorias de mis putas tristes. Hoy subsisten múltiples opciones de diversión nocturna. Algunos de los estaderos son estoicos sobrevivientes de otras épocas, haciendo sonar siempre sus estruendosos equipos de sonido con la salsa brava de Johnny Pacheco, Richie Ray y otros grandes exponentes de ese género antillano. Aunque si de bailar se trata, la capital del Caribe colombiano cuenta con una amplia gama de discotecas que enfatizan en diferentes géneros musicales, incluyendo crossover, electrónica, salsa, vallenato y reggaetón. Único en su género es Quiebracanto, establecimiento que ofrece además a sus clientes la opción de cantar, hacer show y entregarse a la pasión de la noche barranquillera, en un ambiente cómodo y al mismo tiempo elegante. Zonas como las calles 79 y 84 son hoy por hoy epicentros de bares que
ofrecen la opción de una buena conversación con amigos al calor de unos tragos o cervezas, aprovechando la delicia que ofrece Barranquilla al aire libre. Al mismo tiempo, Barranquilla es importante sede cultural y si el plan no es la fiesta, su Teatro Amira de la Rosa, regentado por el Banco de la República, ofrece conciertos, obras de teatro y una activa programación.
Además de su Estadio Metropolitano, orgullo de los barranquilleros y sede de la selección Colombia de fútbol, la ciudad cuenta con un segundo estadio, el Romelio Martínez. Traditionally, the city has been the headquarters of legendary places at all levels: ranging from the famed “La charanga” red light zone, immortalized by García-Marquez’s latest novel “Memories of my melancholy whores”. Today, many options for nighttime fun abound. Some of the stoic inns, survivors of other times, sounding their bustling stereos with gutsy salsa from Johnny Pacheco, Richie Ray and other great ones of this Antillean genre.
