UNEARTH in 2015 the United Nations will celebrate its 70th anniversary. To mark this momentous and auspicious occasion, we propose a public presentation of some of the organization’s rarely-seen and wide-encompassing collection of films and videos, campaign posters and photographs in galleries in New york and elsewhere. this exhibitiob, coorganized by the Gabarron Foundation and the United Nations through its Department of Public Information, will celebrate the UN through its vast iconographic archieves and will travel the world until 2015 being exhibited at different museums and art centers. UNEARTH is the most revealing and bradest exhibition ever assembled about the UN’s own perspective in key moments of recent history, encompassing the organization’s seven decades life span. it will show reflect and comment on the UN’s journey as the world and humankind changed dramatically during he past 68 yers and it will emphasize some of the most important aspects of its main activities (Human Rights, Development, Humanitarian Assistance, Peace and Security).

UNEARTH consists of an exclusive photography exhibition of 40 photographers, made by celebrate photographers as John Isaac, Peter Magubane, or Eskinder Debebe, also some others are anonymous; includes a wide range film and video selection. the affiches exhibition show the work of iconic artist like Victor Vasarely, Robert Rauschenberg, Joan Miro, Jean-Micheal Folon, Hans Erni, Marc Chagall, Keith Haring, Oswaldo Guayasamin or Cristobal Gabarron, whose art helped to promote UN endeavors. its included as well a selection of campaign posters designed by creatives of the Graphic Design Outreach Division of the UN like Milton Glaser, Jan Anessen, Maxim Zhukov, Rocco Callari, Allan Markman, Matias Delfino, Martin Samman, Ziad alkadri or Mackenxie Crone

CRISTOBAL GABARRON Deeply aware of the human body and animal instict, Gabarron’s art is humane as well as powerful” -Donald Kuspit Cristobal Gabarron was born in 1945 in Mula (Murcia). Perhaps his childhood, which was marked by moving to Valladolid, where he did his first training, or his travels to France and Italy, or his current work which he carries out between Spain and the USA have caused him to have an open and discursive mentality. Far from aesthetic conventionalisms focusing on isthmuses or the avant-garde, which he has participated in one way or another at a fixed moment, his work only understands life. We could say that his vision of art is clearly anthropocentric; the individual, life, coexistence and development of human values are pillars that not only his artistic work but also his personal beliefs are based on. The mural for the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games and the mural “Encuentro 92”, for the Seville World Expo (1992), the great sculpture project “Atlanta Star”(1996), the realization of the piece of work “Hope for peace” (1986) which was the official poster for the Summit, or the “Millennium Chapel” (2000-2001), represents important milestones in his career, whilst commencing a fruitful creative period, which is ongoing today, marked by the collaboration with international organizations such as the IOC or the UN.

In later years he has equally maintained his traditional link with other artistic disciplines, as demonstrated by the recent creation of two sets, one for the show “Nuevo Amanecer” by the flamenco singer Jose Merce and the other for Edward Liang’s “Noche latina!” show for the Washington Ballet, in exactly the same city where the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center has exhibited some of his most recent pieces of work. Critics and historians as renowned as Donald Kuspit, commissioner and professor at the University of New York, Kosme de Baranano, professor of Fine Arts at the Miguel Hernandez University, or Julian Zugazagoitia, director of the nelson-Atkins Museum of Art at the Kansas City, have studied of his career, gathered together in the plentiful bibliography that has appeared over the last years. Eager to put something back into the society he recieved from since 1992 he has supported the progressive creation of three foundations, in Valladolid, New York, and Mula (Murcia), where his main desire is to give something back to society, by means of artistic and cultural activities, creating awareness through the arts. CARLOS AGANZO Carlos Aganzo (Madrid 1963) is a Spanish writer and journalist with an extensive literary career, recognized in 2012 with the National Award for Lyrics Teresa of Avila, award obtained previously by the likes of Juan Gelman, José Luis Alonso de Santos and Francisco Arrabal. As a poet, his the author of the poems Ese lado de las cosas (Huerga & Fierro. Madrid, 1998), Manantiales ( Foundation Jorge Guillen. Valladolid, 2002), Como si yo existiera (LF Editions. Béjar, 2004), La hora de los juncos (Senén, Ávila, 2006), Caídos Ángeles (Algaida, Sevilla, 2008), Las voces encendidas (Visor, Madrid, 2010), Las flautas de los bárbaros (Everest, León, 2012) and Técnica Mixta (Agosto Clandestino, Logroño, 2012), for which he has won major awards, including the International Poetry Prize Jaime Gil de Biedma or the University of León. He is also the author of several books of travel of the prestigious collection ‘Ciudades con Encanto’ from El País-Aguilar, with titles like Ávila (2004), Toledo (2006), Segovia (2007), Tarragona (2008),

Has participated in more that hundreds of books, and is member founder of Critics Award of Castile and León and coordinator of international literary awards for poetry San Juan de la Cruz and José Zorrilla, besides belonging to the Academy of Poetry Fontiveros. Chronicler of jazz for twenty years, is also author of the Jorge Pardo biographical essay. Improvisations (City of Rivas Vaciamadrid, 2000). He has collaborated with his lyrics with musicians such as Jorge Pardo and Amancio Prada, and in 2010 premiered at the Zorrilla Theatre Valladolid Ode to Miguel Delibes, with music by Ernesto Monsalve and performed by actress Lola Herrera and Chorus and Orchestra Madrid Philharmonic. As a journalist he started his career in the daily "Ya" in Madrid in 1982, where he worked as a literary critic and deputy head of Culture. He has been director of the film magazine "Inter films" and rotating "La Voz de Huelva" and "Journal of Avila." He is currently director of "El Norte de Castilla", dean of the Spanish press, who were directors Miguel Delibes or José Jiménez Lozano.

After the Screening a panel will be open with Andrew Gilmour, Political Director (Political, Peace-keeping, Humanitarian, Human Rights) of Executive Office of the Secretary-General in New York and moderated by Stephane Dujarric, Director of News and Media in the UN’s Department of Public Information. About the panelist: Andrew Gilmour is UK citizen, born March 1964, and has 4 children. Home in Scotland. Fluent French. Stéphane Dujarric is the Director of News and Media for the United Nations Department of Public Information. In this role, he oversees the UN’s television, radio and photo operations. He coordinates the work of the main United Nations news sites, operating in eight languages, media liaison and accreditation as well as coverage of official United Nations meetings, producing written coverage for the media, delegations and the general public. Prior to this assignment, Dujarric was Director of Communications for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Previously, he was Chief Spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and then Deputy Communications Director for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. During his time as Spokesman, he conducted daily briefings for the UN press corps and faced questions on a number of crises, notably the Oil-for-Food scandal and the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Prior to joining the United Nations, Dujarric worked for ABC News television for close to ten years in various capacities in the network’s New York, London and Paris news bureaux. He traveled extensively on assignment to cover major stories throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Born in France, Dujarric has been living in the United States for the most part of the last 30 years. He is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.

HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE As the United Nations prepares to celebrate its 70th anniversary, The Gabarron Foundation and the Department of Public Information, have come together to organize a major exhibition of UN photos, posters, videos, films, and panel discussions. For this event we will have a unique selection of United Nations Films since UN inception to the most contemporary documentaries regarding HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE. After the Screening a panel will be open with Bettina Luescher, the Chief Spokesperson for North America of the World Food Programme and moderated by Stephane Dujarric, Director of News and Media in the UN’s Department of Public Information.

About the Moderator: Stéphane Dujarric is the Director of News and Media for the United Nations Department of Public Information. In this role, he oversees the UN’s television, radio and photo operations. He coordinates the work of the main United Nations news sites, operating in eight languages, media liaison and accreditation as well as coverage of official United Nations meetings, producing written coverage for the media, delegations and the general public. Prior to this assignment, Dujarric was Director of Communications for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Previously, he was Chief Spokesman for United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan and then Deputy Communications Director for Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. During his time as Spokesman, he conducted daily briefings for the UN press corps and faced questions on a number of crises, notably the Oil-for-Food scandal and the Israel-Lebanon conflict. Prior to joining the United Nations, Dujarric worked for ABC News television for close to ten years in various capacities in the network’s New York, London and Paris news bureaux. He traveled extensively on assignment to cover major stories throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Born in France, Dujarric has been living in the United States for the most part of the last 30 years. He is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.

About the panelist: Bettina Luescher is the Chief Spokesperson for North America of the World Food Programme. Since joining WFP in 2004 she has worked in crisis areas like Darfur, Afghanistan, Gaza, Guatemala, Haiti and the Tsunami region of Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Before joining the UN, Luescher worked for 15 years as an anchor, reporter and field producer for CNN International… based in Atlanta, Frankfurt and Berlin. In 2002 she won a “National Headliner Award – First Place” as member of CNN’s Investigative Team for the coverage of “Attack on America – 9/11”. Before CNN she worked for three years as an anchor for German ARD television. She started her career in radio and at a local newspaper. Luescher studied in Muenster/Germany and at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She has a Master's degree in Political Science, and has won two Fulbright Scholarships. She was born in Hamm/Germany and grew up in Munich.
