Welcom e!

If you find yourself asking what happened to the first half of this year, you’re not alone! It’s hard to believe 2014 is half way through. Upon reflection, we’ve had some fantastic competitions and events for our shoppers so far this year. Over the past six months Shelly Centre has given away a luxury weekend for two at a five star boutique lodge and spa, dazzled you with the excitement of the Africa Bike Week Mass Ride, hosted a Father’s Day Race Event on Centre Court where two lucky participants won tickets to Top Gear 2014 and if that wasn’t enough, we gave one ecstatic shopper and her daughter a Winter Wardrobe and exclusive makeover with exMiss SA Megan Coleman worth R30 000! From a store perspective we’ve had some incredibly exciting developments as well. In the very near future you won’t need to wonder where to take the kids for a meal,

as three of our restaurants, Georgia Spur, John Dory’s and Panarottis will all boast state of the art children’s play areas! We are also delighted to have new tenant Telkom Mobile as part of the Shelly Centre family. Much has happened and we still have plenty in store, so like us on Facebook and subscribe to our newsletter to stay in the know! Until next time, enjoy shopping at your mall of choice!

9 AUGUST 2014

Women’s Day t s a @ f k a ShellyCentre e r B Exciting news ladies, Shelly Centre’s Women’s Day Breakfast is back and you’re invited! Join us on Saturday the 9 August 2014 from 7am – 9am for a morning of inspirational food for thought and celebrating womanhood. Local leukaemia survivor Jamie-Lee Caple, will be joining us for a catch up along with an incredible key note speaker, not to be missed!

A light breakfast will be provided on the morning and each guest will go home with a fabulous goodie bag! The breakfast is in support of The Sunflower Fund. Tickets will be sold for R150 each with all proceeds going to this very worthy cause.

THE SUNFLOWER FUND

8

The Sunflower Fund was formed in 1999 in support of the SABMR and was inspired by Chris Corlett and Darren Serebro’s heroic struggle against leukaemia. It was formed by parents whose children had contracted leukaemia, and in some cases had lost their battle against it. Their aim was to secure financial support in order to increase the number of bone marrow stem cell donors in South Africa. The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit a viable source of wellinformed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders. It strives to maintain the associated donor records of the South African Bone Marrow Registry. www.sunflowerfund.org.za

Bag the look you want! Whatever the look you are aiming to create, be it arty, elegant, sporty or business-like‌you can achieve it quite simply by selecting the right accessories. You don’t need to rob a bank to look like a bank manager. Make sure your shoes and man-bag or folder match. Get wise about ties and savvy about socks! A little bit of colour peeking from under your trouser hems is regarded fashionable, as long as your trousers meet your shoes when you stand up.

As a rule of thumb, pick three! Stick to no more than three key pieces of jewellery at any time. Be it a cuff, ring, necklace or earring, more than 3 pieces will be way too busy. Take one last look in the mirror before you leave the house, and if necessary, remove the last bit of bling you put on. Less really is more!

Glamourize your gadgets! If you want to dress for success, invest in a stylish laptop bag or a designer cover for your smartphone, i-Pad, tablet or a laptop. Apart from looking uber-smart it will help seal that business deal!

Ultimate Foundation Anyone can fake perfect skin – it all comes down to choosing the right colour and type for your complexion, and then learning how to apply it. Even top models need a bit of assistance to achieve a flawless skin, and often it is an illusion created by us make-up artists. The secret weapon is the foundation: used skilfully it can mask tiredness, camouflage blotches and blemishes, and create a fresh, even look. With the right colour, formula and technique, noone will know that it’s there – except you! Today, foundations come in a variety of formulas to suit every skin type: from thick blemish-covering creams to light barely-there gels. Invest in a good quality foundation as it is the base for all great make-up.

Foundation 101… Ensure your face is cleansed, toned and moisturised. Place a little foundation in the palm of your hand and use it like a palette. This warms up the foundation to body temperature and means that it slides on smoothly. - Dot foundation onto the forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. This can be done by using fingertips, a sponge or a foundation brush. - Blend the foundation outwards across the cheeks, forehead and nose. Fade it out gradually down to the jaw and towards the hairline. - Use your ring finger (it has a lighter touch than the index finger) to dot concealer around your eyes and gently pat it in. Don’t put it on your lids as it can cause eye shadows and creams to crease. - For a better blended and more even finish – sweep the clean side of a sponge over your face, and then do a final check in natural daylight. If you look good in this, you should look great in any light.

Foundation Tips… - Build up foundation gradually; it is easier to add than to remove! - Blend, blend, blend! Foundation should never be visible. - Let your foundation settle before moving onto the next stage. - Don’t use foundation to add colour – rather use a bronzer.

Walking through winter with attitude takes fancy footwork!

Show off your swag in this winter’s boots, which range from thigh-high to flat ankle boots (and everything in between). The masculine-feminine trend comes out with flashes of metal, fur, feathers and charms. Shop for the perfect pair that expresses your personal style! And don’t shy away from eye catching colours.

It’s time to let the cat out of the bag! It’s no secret! From faux fur to Faberge-like embellishments, the buzz word for this season’s bags: ambiguity! Deep black bags with psychedelic accents, classic lines adorned with rebellious spikes, masculine/feminine contrasts… this season opposites definitely attract. The same applies to belts.

Stockists of alternative, homeopathic and natural health products

Elderberry Elderberry, also known as sambucus, has been used for centuries to treat respiratory illnesses such as colds and flu. In addition to its apparent antibacterial and antiviral properties, Elder is rich in antioxidants, helping the body to maintain healthy cells. Studies suggest that the flowers and berries may help reduce swelling of the mucous membranes, helping to alleviate nasal congestion. In a study published in the Journal of International Medical Research, researchers gave 60 flu sufferers a placebo or elderberry syrup four times a day. The elderberry group recovered an average of four days faster. There are a number of products on the market that include Elderberry extracts. Ask your pharmacist or natural health practitioner to recommend one.

Echinacea Echinacea is a flowering plant that grows throughout the U.S. and Canada, where it has been used for centuries to treat respiratory infections. Although there is no conclusive understanding of how it works, several studies indicate that echinacea can help you get over a cold faster and reduce symptoms. Popularised by recent media campaigns, A Vogel’s Echinaforce is probably the best known Echinacea product. There are, however, a number of treatments that are effective, such as Linctagon. The effervescent tablets have a delicious orange flavour, making them a favourite in many moms’ medicine cabinets.

Drink warm liquids There is truth in the old belief that chicken soup does wonders for a cold. While it won’t cure an upper respiratory infection, it will relieve some of the nasty symptoms. A mug of hot tea and lemon will also do the trick. Another natural favourite is a mug of tea steeped with fresh ginger. Ginger is a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, and will soothe a sore throat. Add a teaspoon of honey to double the impact. Honey is an effective (and delicious) way to treat coughs!

Get plenty of rest Your body needs time to heal, so grab your blankie and snuggle up with a book. If you are struggling to sleep due to congestion, use a humidifier or vaporizer all night to release moisture into the air. Steam can loosen congestion and moisturize your nasal passages. Apart from helping you to breathe easier, moist air can soothe irritated tissues in your nose and throat

Essential Oils Add a drop of peppermint, eucalyptus or lavender essential oil to your bath water (or sprinkle a few drops on the floor of your shower) and soak up the soothing, aromatic steam. If you are struggling with congestion, put a few drops of eucalyptus oil in a bowl of water, place a towel over your head, then lower it over the bowl to inhale the vapours. The steam will sooth your mucous membranes while the antibacterial oil goes to work.

Social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Blogger, LinkedIn and many others have become increasingly popular not only for social purposes, but also as tools to assist in job hunting and business networking. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware that, as useful as these social media sites may be, there also lurks hidden dangers for the online ‘socialite’.

The South African approach to the use of social media in employment situations is still developing, with limited guidance by our courts to use as reference. The growing trend for employers to keep tabs on their employees’ social media interactions will however in time grow the reference base for the use of social media and help clarify what can and cannot be used against an employee. In a recent South African decision the Judge relied on information posted on an ex-employee’s LinkedIn online account as evidence that this employee did indeed foster a relationship with his previous employer’s clients. It has also become a growing practice to utilise information on social media sites, including status updates or twitter feeds, as evidence in support of legal cases.

It is therefore more and more apparent that managing your online presence and filtering what you post on social media sites is crucially important, and that a casual approach to online ‘socializing’ could hold serious consequences for an employee. The following guidelines can help in identifying online posts that could pose a danger to you: • Negative, insulting, inaccurate or inappropriate statements pertaining to your boss, your colleagues, your company, your products, your suppliers or customers, or even your competitors may very well get you fired. • Posting or being tagged in inappropriate pictures or posting remarks that conflict with the company’s vision, mission and values, may have a negative influence on your company’s image and is also best avoided. • Posting status updates or photos whilst being on sick leave or posting pictures of attending non-work related social events during working hours may give your employer grounds for accusing you of misconduct. • Posting confidential or sensitive information that relates to your job or company or clients could jeopardize the company and its clients and should also be avoided at all times. These guidelines are not meant to discourage social engagement, but rather highlight the need to be cautious and sensitive to acceptable social media usage. With information available at a click of a button, special care needs to be taken to avoid misuse thereof. As an employee, the following tips should be kept in mind when managing your social profiles: • Know the company’s social media policy. Many companies have these in place and these policies generally govern the employees’ usage of social media platforms. Make sure that the content of this policy is understood by you and ensure that your profiles and postings comply with these policies. • Check your privacy settings. Most social media sites have ways to control who can view your profile and who is restricted. Take care in considering who you grant access to your profile and your content. • Monitor your profiles regularly, checking for photo’s or posts that are not in line with your company’s policies. This way tags or unwanted posts of any nature can be removed before causing problems for you in your workplace. Whether you are a junior employee or a member of management, the same rules apply – you represent the company and even your conduct on social media sites can hurt and impact the name and reputation of the company and in turn impact on your employment with the company. For employers, note should be taken of the dangers lurking on social media sites and the unregulated use thereof by employees. Obtain legal advice and assistance to help develop appropriate social media usage policies that regulate the acceptable use by your employees of social media.
