Based on accounts coming from Government, a new phase of growth is about to take root on the KZN South Coast. Over the past few years the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal has enjoyed a dramatic rise in infrastructure spend, mainly concentrated within the North Coast area. This growth can be directly attributed to the building of the King Shaka International airport, in preparation for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, and the resulting influx of business around this facility; indeed the entire Dube Trade Port area. The South Coast is about to experience a similar boom. Historically, stagnant growth in the real estate sector, coupled with challenges resulting from insufficient air-travel facilities, contributed towards investors forming a negative perception of the South Coast area. The good news is that this is about to change! An enormous amount of work is being done behind the scenes, with a range of exciting projects currently in the Governmental pipeline.

Clearly the resurgence of the Margate Airport, a working base that g OR Tambo currently sees daily CemAir flights to and from Johannesburg derway to lengthen the runway, airport, is a massive leader. Plans are underway thus facilitating the influx of larger planes and more flights to and from other destinations. The South Coast’s world-class tourism offering ffering is set to draw even more hes lend themselves to family tourists than it currently does. Our beaches fun and with a variety of top class golf courses ourses to choose from, it will continue to attract. Not many are aware that an extremely attractive tractive base has developed for international film-making. Just outside e the Wild Coast Sun Golf Course, a massive tent-town was recently ly erected for the filming of a Hollywood movie starring A-listers sters such as CharlizeTheron, Sean Penn and Penelope lope Cruz. Whilst off set, these big screen stars have e been spotted shopping in our local shopping centres. Other productions that were filmed on the e South Coast include Blood Diamond, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and the sequel to Blue Crush. It’s no secret to the locals that SA’s majorr sugar companies, which have large land investments ments on the South Coast, are now looking to convert some of their land into residentiall and commercial space. Unlocking this land nd will provide impetus for job-creation and further secondary investment. All of this adds up to one clear message: The KZN South Coast is open for business ss and the next period will bring opportunityy to many, with the Tourism and Real Estate te industries remaining key drivers.

Camelot Spa Charlize Theron

Javier Bardem

Camelot Spa San Lameer was lucky enough to capture the attention of a number of movie stars recently while they were filming a movie on the South Coast. Here are the treatments they chose:

Penelope Cruz She visited the Spa a number of times during her stay and before she left she said:

One of the best Spas I have been to in the World, and I have been to many, all over!

Charlize was here with Sean Penn, her mom Gerda and her son Jackson. She enjoyed the Deep Tissue full body massage and loved the Deluxe Mani and Pedi treatments but opted out of a paint – we are happy to adapt our treatments to suit our guest’s needs! Gerda had a Deluxe Mani and Pedi, as well as a Gelish add on to keep her nails looking good for longer while playing on the beach with her grandson.

He couldn’t get enough of the Camelot Universal Signature 90 min massage. He preferred the 90 minute treatment because it gave him enough time to really relax!

Penelope loved the Floatation Pool and the Rasul chamber with mud application and the cold pool. She also raved about the Thalgo Anti-Age Silicium facial. Penelope liked the idea of Gelish paint on her nails as it lasts longer than normal varnish. She had an Indian Head Massage and a Pressure Point Foot Massage as well as a CSpa Gary Rom hair mask to improve the gloss in her hair.

@ the Burry Stander Bike Park Thirty five mountain bicycles were donated to the Burry Stander Foundation, during the opening of the MTB Park named in his honour, by Sport & Recreation South Africa (SRSA) and the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport & Recreation. Represented by its Director-General, Mr Alec Moemi, SRSA called upon all stakeholders to work together towards ensuring that more previously disadvantaged youth participate in cycling, and to ensure that the legacy of Burry Stander, South Africa’s mountain bike champion and Olympian lives on.

The bicycles handed over to the Foundation are part of the government’s Cycle for Life programme that intends to promote cycling and ensure that all South Africans learn to see a bicycle as more than simply a mode of transport, and to promote awareness about the many associated benefits of its use, for example to the environment, one’s health, and to the economy in general. Go travel and enjoy, make memories, be a responsible traveller and make a difference in someone’s life...

being a

with or without kids

BY TESSA BUHRMANN - FOUNDER AND EDITOR OF RESPONSIBLE TRAVELLER

Travel is fun, especially when travelling with w your significant other or your kids… either way, memories are made m and family bonds are strengthene strengthened. My kids are grown up now and we often look back at the places we’ve been b to and the fun stuff we have done with fondness – my eldest got mar married recently and has begun making special memories of his own… this is what makes travel so very special. Now on to the subject of travelling ‘green’ or being bein a responsible traveller – a phrase I pre prefer as it encompasses all aspects of sust sustainable and responsible ttourism. i IIn a nutshell t h ll responsible ibl ttourism i iis h having i a positive impact on local economies, local communities, conservation and the environment. Some would argue that all travel negatively impacts the environment, and yes, it probably does to a certain extent. But this is what makes your decisions in the planning stages and while travelling so important. When planning your holiday, don’t just look for establishments that fit your price range, are the perfect romantic getaway or have great holiday activities for the kids, but check their websites for their environmental and community initiatives. Ask questions if these seem vague and unsubstantiated as there is nothing worse that an establishment that gains your trust by ‘green washing’ – a term used to describe the practice of saying what actually isn’t thereby setting out to deceive. If nothing is listed, then ask… if they don’t have anything in place then ask ‘why not’ and keep looking. From an environmental point of view, this encompasses recycling (not all establishments have facilities for in-room sorting, but one would hope that they sort and recycle their garbage), reducing the use of energy (switching off lights & aircons when leaving the room) and not using an excessive amount of water (I know you’re on holiday, but most regions in South Africa suffer from water shortages from time to time, and it is the local communities that suffer most). When you’re out on excursions, keep your garbage in a packet until you can dispose of it in an urban environment – outlying areas find the logistics of recycling rather difficult and garbage is often burned or buried, neither of which is ideal for the environment or the wildlife that calls it home. And definitely no littering!

programme, one that highlights conservation. The advantage of this is that they have a great fun time learning and mom and dad have some special alone time too. And if not, consider some conservation input of your own, we spent many hours in game reserves with our kids and they loved it. Armed with their own binoculars, bird and mammal books – we identified (or at least tried to) animal poop and spoor, and imagined various scenarios and told great stories. So if planned activities aren’t available, prepare in advance and your kids will have a memorable bush experience and make many fun family memories. Everyone loves to buy stuff when on holiday. Consider buying local… choose hand made items from local speciality shops, craft stalls and markets instead of imported items at regular retail outlets – these will not only have memories attached, but brings valued income to local communities. Just watch out for products made from endangered species, hard woods and even special shells from beach traders – if in doubt, don’t buy. If bargaining for an item, bear in mind a small amount for you could be extremely important for the seller – this is a great way to reinforce the principal of honouring others less fortunate. Take the opportunity of asking questions when interacting with local people, discover the pleasure of seeing things through their eyes and the delight they take in telling their stories. Support local retailers and coffee shops in preference to chain stores as this boosts the local economy – many areas depend on tourist spend for their survival. Try and include a cultural aspect to your holiday. Look out for authentic cultural experiences that provide an opportunity for meaningful interaction and an insight into the dances, songs and traditions of the community these are way better than the touristy ‘cultural village’ experiences that are sometimes on offer. Where possible look for establishments and businesses that support local entrepreneurs, like hand made cookies in the rooms, locally grown coffee and fruit and vegetable sourced from street markets. Opportunities for contributing and ‘giving back’ are often available. Ask if your establishment supports a local charity or community project, then stock up on goodies, like crayons and books, toothpaste and band-aids or whatever else they may require. This is a great opportunity to get the kids involved, and help to nurture a heart of giving.

Should you have kids in tow, add adventure and activity into the itinerary… should this be a bush destination choose one that has an exciting kids Visit www.responsibletraveller.co.za for more info on responsible travel.

The Wild Coast/Pondoland Centre of Plant diversity runs from Oribi Gorge to Port St John’s – a spectacularly beautiful part of the country with very high levels of endemic species ie plants found there and nowhere else in the world. From Oribi Gorge to Durban one finds some excellent dune and coastal forest, grassland and estuaries. The varied landscapes, from rolling grassland to rocky cliffs, forest and wetlands, provide habitats for a great range and variety of plants. The best places to look at plants are Umtamvuna Nature Reserve near Port Edward, Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve near Port Shepstone, Vernon Crookes Nature Reserve near Umzinto, Mdoni Park near Park Rynie and many smaller private and municipal parks and gardens. Here you need to take your time walking through the grasslands – always full of wild flowers. There are many treasures to be enjoyed. Then venture into the forests to explore the trees and shrubs. There is a guide to Umtamvuna Nature Reserve with plant lists to help you.

NUM-NUM OR AMATUNGULU Carissa macrocarpa In mid-summer, the Numnum or Amatungulu is conspicuous with its fragrant white flowers and dark green foliage. The scarlet fruits are delicious, eaten by people, animals and birds. The fruit can be used to make syrup or jelly.

The Forest Toad Tree is most common in the dune and coastal forest. You will find it in gardens where the seed has been spread by birds. It is a beautiful tropical looking tree with large leaves and bunches of fragrant white flowers. The twin fruits are warty and look like a toad in a related species from the Bushveld. These fruits split open to reveal bright red seeds which the birds enjoy.

BEACH MORNING GLORY Ipomoea pes-caprae

LAGOON HIBISCUS Hibiscus tiliaceus The Lagoon Hibiscus fringes the lagoons, stabilising the banks of the rivers and surviving waterlogged soil. The lovely large yellow flowers turn coppery red before dropping.

FLAME LILY Gloriosa superba This beautiful lily is found from the sea-facing dunes to the bushveld. It is always an exciting find, usually in bloom from December to March.

With everyone enjoying the beaches, take a little time to notice the beach wild flowers and the dune forest where you might be picnicking and parking. This is unique vegetation, adapted to growing in the shifting sands and to withstand the salt laden winds. Below are some of the plants most easily seen along the coastline.

FROM THE GREEN TO THE DEEP BLUE!

Mark McNulty What Wikipedia p doesn’t tell yyou about

Golfing legend, Mark McNulty spends at least two months of the year at his home in San Lameer on the South Coast. He was one of the leading players on the European Tour from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s, and cracked the top 10 of the Official World Golf Ranking for 83 weeks from 1987 to 1992. He is presently playing on the Champions Tour, but takes time out by swapping his drivers for dive gear. South Coast Style chats to Mark after one of his Protea Banks dives…

How long have you been diving and what got you started? I first started diving in 1982 and for a couple of years I didn’t really explode into it, because my golf actually just took over and playing in Europe, predominantly during 80’s, it wasn’t really conducive to actually getting in the water and diving. When I started playing in the Champions Tour in 2004, I decided to get recertified here, so I got myself back in the water in 2007 with the phenomenal dive operators of the South Coast. So whenever I have a free moment and I’m down at the coast - I dive as much as possible (down at the coast means coming back from America, and I spend two months of the year here… for the last ten years it’s been November and December). I’ve been diving rigorously since 2007 again, and I’ve incorporated that into my American

On protecting our marine environment: “Education is the crux of it all. If the kids can be taught that we are not on their (sharks’) menu, it will be a great win for the sharks!” Mark supports Project Aware and believes that we should all play our part in creating awareness concerning the plight of our oceans, caused by overfishing and other irresponsible practices. www.projectaware.org

schedule, so I dive a lot in the States as well, whether it be in Hawaii, Florida, Bahamas or Mexico. I guess I’m not really a recreational diver anymore, because I dive at least 100 times a year (which is a little more than recreational!) I’d like to dive more… I thoroughly enjoy the South Coast. We have a home at San Lameer and we’ve been there for about 18 years. This made perfect sense, as I was able to enjoy my three passions of golfing, diving and photography.

What was the highlight of your dive at Protea Banks this morning? My son Matthew lives in Johannesburg and he’s down for a few days, so we had a great time together and enjoyed a wonderful 40 minute dive with Roland and Beulah Mauz from African Dive Adventures . We had about ten Guitar sharks on the bottom of one section, we had three fly-by’s of Hammerheads – about 300 or 400 in each school of them - and a couple of lone Black Tips... So we had great shark sightings today and visibility was about 25 meters (just a little bit above par for the course for Protea at this time of the year). It was fantastic! Great weather, glorious sunshine. We had some wonderful people with us!

Tell us what do you love about the South Coast... When I first came down to the South Coast I was a young boy. My parents used to come down on holiday. I can’t even remember the first year I came down here, but golf was my passion as a kid, when I was eight years old, even. From Umkomaas down to Southbroom, I used to love playing all these golf courses. We use to stay at Uvongo. My old man (stepfather) loved to play golf as well, and we played a lot of different golf courses. Some of them have gone by the wayside now, due to urbanisation and big developments. The South Coast has always been in my blood, so when I decided to buy property down here, I looked carefully and San Lameer turned out to be the place where I felt secure - world class golf course, great beach… and I was away from the maddening crowd. I spend nine months of the year playing golf, I play in big cities and you have a lot of people around you, so it’s always great to just get away from everybody. A typical day on the South Coast: “Well, you know, it’s actually nice to put your feet up and not do much. Waking up and looking at the big sea out there. We have a beautiful view. Open curtains at 5:30 and looking at the sea. I might go to the gym, I might ride my bike, I might go for a walk on the beach with my wife. But in general, for my two months off it is basically about relaxation. I do train a bit… I do a little bit of golf, but it’s about catching up on things that I don’t get to do in the States.

The African Dive Adventures team supports various organizations such as Shark Life and Shark Project. They organise Paddle out for Sharks, an internationally-recognised annual event. Proud Shark Angel Beulah Mauz and Dive Instructor Karen Tredger team up to present educational talks to the youth, highlighting the importance of protecting the ocean and its inhabitants, especially sharks.

Q What qualifications do you require to become a diving instructor? A You need to go through several qualifying steps to become an instructor: Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver, First Aid CPR, DIVE INSTRUCTOR Divemaster. Once you have 100 logged dives you can start with your Instructor’s course. Q How long have you been teaching? A About 17 years. I still find it exciting to introduce students to the wonderful world of scuba diving. Q How many students do you take at a time - in the pool and in the open water? A There are usually 4 to 5 in a group (max. 8). We also do one-on-one training. We provide weekend training for those who need to work during the week. Q What excites you about diving? A Everything! It is just totally amazing to be able to share the ocean with all its inhabitants. It is a fascinating world that we enter… so relaxing. Q What is your favourite dive spot and why? A Without a doubt Protea Banks. Beulah and myself have dived many famous reefs around the world, but Protea is just special. Where else in the world can you dive with 6 and often 7 different species of sharks on one dive? Protea has become a firm favourite with overseas divers and earned it’s place among the top 3 shark dive spots in the world.

Bryan Nhleko Q How llon lo long on o ng h have ave av ve yo ve y you ou b been een e en e nd di diving? ivi vin v ing g? ? A For 8 years. Q What excites you about diving? A I love being part of this different world. It is almost magical and like nothing else I have ever done. ADVANCED OPEN WATER DIVER Q What is your favourite dive spot and why? A I have dived on Aliwal Shoal, Protea Banks and I have been to Barra Lodge in Mozambique. I like them all for different reasons. I have done more dives on Protea, so I like this area more. Q Mention some of your highlights as a diver. A On my very first dive in the ocean on Aliwal shoal I saw a Ragged Tooth Shark. It was amazing and opened a whole new world for me. My many experiences with sharks on Protea have also been special. I will also never forget the amazing encounters I had with Mantas and Whale Sharks in Mozambique. Q How do you go about creating awareness about the preservation of our marine heritage? A Once you dive you understand more about all the creatures in the ocean and you respect them. I don’t like it when they are killed just for the fun of it and I try to explain this to the people of my community. I was interviewed by Monty Hall from the BBC Channel a few years ago and when the people from my community saw this they started asking me more questions about my work at African Dive Adventures and diving, so I try to explain it all to them.

THE TRUSTED SHARK DIVING SPECIALISTS SINCE 1994... African Dive Adventures offers experienced divers direct access to the world-renowned Protea Banks. Popular for its rich diverisity of Sharks, Protea Banks is rated as one of the premier shark dive sites in the World. African Dive Adventures also offer trips to Mozambique. A spoonful of facts about sugar cane farming on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast: There are some sweet statistics pouring out from the South African sugar industry – an industry that not only generates an annual estimated average direct income of over R12 billion, but makes a valuable contribution to employment and socio-economic development. So when you sprinkle that sachet of sugary sweetness into your frothy cappuccino, ponder these interesting facts about the South Coast sugar industry: The Illovo Sugar Umzimkulu Mill, situated on the banks of the Umzimkulu River, currently processes just under one million tons of sugar cane, which is grown on 25,250 hectares of farmland stretching between Port Edward in the south, Umzumbe in the north and Harding in the west. The mill, which is supplied by 125 commercial and 209 small scale local farmers, is the hub of the Umzimkulu sugar cane industry - a key driver of the local economy, injecting an estimated R 432 million in gross cane revenue in the current season. The sugar industry as a whole creates approximately 79 000 direct jobs, which includes self-employment of farmers, employment on sugarcane farms, sugar millers and industry support organisations. Indirect or induced employed for the industry is estimated at 350 000 jobs.

The first commercial sugar cane on the South Coast was planted in 1872 by Mr Archibald Sinclair on the farm Ambleside, which is located at the back of Umtentweni. Sugar cane agriculture is a large part of the history on the South Coast and has been grown by many generations of farmers. An example of such a farm is the Peckham’s Outlook Farm in Southbroom, home to the Outlook Trading Post, a restaurant and old-world farm stall, which ironically stocks a decadent range of oldfashioned sugary treats.

Pumba Tours conducts 4x4 day tours, which incorporate a sugarcane farmland experience. Guests are treated to a piece of sugarcane and a sample of sugar, whilst enjoying an interesting talk, which takes place on a hill overlooking the Umzimkulu Mill. The following topics are covered: • How and why fields are burned before harvest • How sugarcane crops are harvested, collected, loaded and weighed • The process the sugarcane goes through after arriving at the mill • The history of the mill and its current operations. GET

SEASHELLS!

If you have been beach bound this summer, especially with little ones, I am sure a load of collected seashells have made their way back home with you. These little beachcomber treasures are packed with memories of sandy toes and carefree days – and are just too precious to toss aside. Seashells are such an inexpensive way to add color and texture to your life. Here are some fun ideas: Add a whimsical ‘60s-style beach theme to your doors and windows by making a bead curtain decorated with shells. Place a few large and interesting shells together in a large bowl to create an interesting centrepiece. Gather similar looking shells and glue them onto a flat wooden frame. Use shells, tile adhesive and grout to cover tired looking pot plants. Glue shells onto plain hair clips/slides to create personalised accessories.

Introducing our local Chefs du Jour...

M E N T I O N Y O U R P E R S O N A L S T Y L E O F C O O K I N G A N D H O W I T E V O LV E D My style of cooking has evolved over the years initially starting as predominantly French under Christina Martin, however as I moved on I experienced “new world cuisine” which is a blend of many nations styles and flavors. The reason for this in all honesty is that I am South African and much like our nation of many nations, so too is my style a heady mix of borrowed flavors. In short, world fusion using good old techniques.

At Casa Toscana we share the philosophy of classic Italian cooking that emphasises the importance of using the freshest locally sourced produce. We believe in slow food inspired by traditional family recipes, with a contemporary flair and authentic style...

I see myself as a new world chef, adopting “modernist” cooking techniques. While I trained in the classical French style, I have infused contemporary fusion techniques and influences, from Asian to Mediterranean styles for progression in the culinary arts. As one of the French food philosopher’s Jean Brillat-Savarin captured so eloquently, “The discovery of a new dish confers more happiness on humanity than the discovery of a new star.”

D E S C R I B E A D I S H T H AT YO U P R E PA R E T H AT B E S T D E S C R I B E S YO U R P E R S O N A L I T Y There can’t be just one dish, every dish has a bit of my personality in it. The common thread through the dishes has to be that all the ingredients should harmonize with one another.

Italian food is simple, we like to let the produce shine: ripe tomatoes, Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto, porcini mushrooms, ragù, and extra virgin olive oil filter into most of our dishes.

I would have to say my legendary avocado fries deep fried crumbed avocado strips drizzled with balsamic reduction and served with sweet chilli sauce, a truly unique dish!

L I S T T H R E E I N G R E D I E N T S T H A T Y O U S I M P LY C A N N O T D O W I T H O U T ! Salt, love and passion and cream, probably in that order. I do have a slight leaning toward chilli, what that says about my culinary palate... I don’t know, why don’t you come and find out!

42

We could not do without Parmigiano Reggiano, the best extra virgin olive oil that we can find and our imported Prosciutto di Parma. See you soon at Casa Toscana.

My all-time favorite is Knorr veggie seasoning! Chipotle Tobasco sauce, it’s smokey flavor adds to my buffalo wings sauce. Lastly no dish would be complete without sea salt & black pepper.

theplace2be Tasmee Hylkema welcomes you to her oasis of organic pampering and calm! Tasmee is passionate about incorporating environmentally sound ingredients and practices into the products she stocks to raise consciousness about protecting our ecosystem.

Purely Positive Pampering

What were some of your guiding principles when starting In Sense Organic Day Spa? The business is ultimately an extension of my own personal beliefs and ethos. Animal rights, environmental awareness and conservation is not merely a marketing tool, but a passion. Therefore any product that I endorse through the In Sense brand are products I am deeply passionate about. I wanted to raise awareness of the Eminence brand in the South African market, and make people aware that such potent and results driven skincare is available without being tested on animals and contain ingredients so pure it is good enough to eat! I needed a platform in which to educate consumers of associations such as PETA and the WWF, and that we could offer personalised and customer orientated treatments with professional advice in the knowledge that any Eminence product retailed to a consumer, is the best possible solution for their individual needs. Ethical skincare forms the basic guiding principle for In Sense Organic Spa. What is your vision for the future? We are the first official importers of Eminence Organic Skin Care in South Africa. This year we have

launched our online store, so we are able to reach a wider market. We aim to grow the brand through making it available in other top spas and salons throughout SA. Why do you feel that spa treatments are so important to incorporate into lives? Spa treatments are not just about pamper but also transforming ones psychological and physiological being. A spa is one of the few places one can go to escape the rigours of daily life. A perfect time and place in which to reflect, relax and rejuvenate mind, body and soul. Spas are devoted to enhancing overall wellbeing through a variety of professional services that encourage total renewal. In the hard fast pace of today’s world, it is not a luxury, but a necessity. Do you also cater for men with your treatments? It is encouraging to note the increase of men who visit the spa. They have adopted the benefits of massage and facials as easily as going to the gym. We offer a wide range of massage such as Swedish, hot stone and sport massage which is just as appealing to men as it is to the ladies. Men are be-

coming increasingly conscious of adopting a healthy skin care routine and book regular facials. What is your favourite product and why? The one product I would not be able to live without is the Eminence Rosehip Tonique. It is a gentle refreshing toner which is misted on to the skin to remove surface impurities and deliver high amounts of Vitamin A and C as well as bioflavanoids, to calm and create a matte finish on oily and sensitive skin. A spritz onto mineral makeup sets the minerals and the aromatic smells of fresh herbs and fruit with its aromatherapy benefits really does set the “tone” for my day! BE

WITH DR SINGH

Dr. B.A. Singh is currently the Trauma Director at Netcare Margate Hospital. His particular field of interest is the treatment of critically ill patients, venomous bites and disaster management. He has been involved in emergency medicine since 2007 and serves on the Physician’s Advisory Board at Netcare Margate Hospital.

Getting sunburned is really awful! It sneaks up on you whilst you are having fun in the sun and can have some long-lasting consequences, such as increasing the risk of developing signs of early ageing and even skin malignancies. A single blistering burn can double a young child’s risk of developing a melanoma (serious skin cancer). Follow these simple steps and survive the summer heat without causing lasting damage to your skin. If you feel the telltale signs of sunburn – tingling of the skin, reddening, blistering or pain, get out of the sun immediately and start treatment. Sunburn can sometimes take four to six hours before symptoms develop, so a touch of pink at the beach can prove to be far more serious later in the day. • Take a cool shower or bath, before lathering on copious amounts of moisturizing cream or lotion. Try to avoid using perfumed preparations and favour lotions containing Vitamins C & E, which will help limit skin damage. Resist the urge to scrub, pick or peel any of your blisters. • Drink plenty of fluids – water, juice, and sports drinks are ideal. Sunburn draws fluid to the skin surface and away from the rest of the body; Children are especially vulnerable to dehydration, so please do not hesitate to consult a doctor if they appear ill. Signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, thirst, reduced urination, headache, dizziness and sleepiness.

Netcare Margate Hospital has been a proud member of the Netcare Group of Hospitals since October 2001. Offering highly professional care in a relaxed environment that is conducive to healing, the hospital comprises a 94-bed, state of the art facility with a wide range of specialist treatments.

A DOCTOR’S GUIDE TO SURVIVING THE SUMMER SUN

• Anti-inflammatories are suitable to reduce inflammation and pain. Simple, over-thecounter anti-inflammatories are effective in treating mild to moderate pain; however, use should be guided by a doctor and avoided if contra-indications exist, such as a previous peptic ulcer or sensitivities/allergies. Use of these medications should never exceed two days. Most cases of sunburn, even those causing a few blisters, can be treated at home, but if a blistering burn covers 20% or more of the body (a child’s whole back), seek medical attention. If fevers and chills occur you should also seek medical help. Finally, it is wise to consider the burn a warning that your sun-safety net has failed and commit to being more sun savvy in future. That means using a good quality sunscreen (minimum SPF 50), covering up with light clothing and hats and avoiding the sun as much as possible between 10 am and 4 pm.

The Essence of

ORGANICS

Derek and Juliette Classen in the rosemary fields at Oribi Gorge

This initiative has grown from strength to strength. A nursery was built to grow large volumes of high quality seedlings, together with a distillation plant to process the oil within close proximity to the farmers. This impressive brick building can be seen on the road to Lake Eland, opposite the entrance to The Gorge Private Game Lodge and Spa. Oribi Organics was initially created as a value-adding venture for these organic, locally produced essential oils. After extensive research into natural oils and ingredients, it became evident to Juliette Classen that most commercial cosmetics contain many potentially harmful synthetic ingredients which the majority of us cannot interpret when scanning the labels! This family-run venture was born out of a genuine passion for the environment. The wood-fired boiler which is used in the distillation plant relies on a plentiful supply of the non-indigenous Black Wattle trees which grow in the area. This method of distillation is not only the most cost effective, but the harvesting of these trees helps to eradicate this water hungry parasite plant from the natural habitat of the glorious Oribi Gorge area. In order to avoid adding harsh chemical preservatives, all the products are made in small consignments to keep them as fresh as possible, and are handcrafted on demand. It is of the utmost importance that every ingredient used in Oribi Organics - oil, butter, essential oil, extract or wax - has been derived from a plant and has had the least amount of processing possible and without the use of chemicals, solvents, toxins or synthetic preservatives.

In 2006 the local municipality of Izingolweni approached us as successful commercial farmers to look into partnering with subsistence and emerging farmers in our area to become more successful. An analysis was done on the farmers who wanted assistance, as well as their individual circumstances. We discovered that their greatest challenge was a lack of farming assets with which to work large areas of land, as well as a lack of infrastructure to transport the cultivated produce to the relevant markets. For this reason the traditional crops that grow in our coastal area, namely sugar cane, timber and vegetables were not viable crops for the emerging farmers to plant. After extensive research, it was decided to begin the cultivation and distillation of essential oils, starting with Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) as this overcame all the challenges that the other crops posed. Derek and Juliette Classen

Oribi Organics produces three essential oils: tea tree, rosemary and rose geranium. These pure essential oils are of the highest export quality.

Q&A

WITH THE CEO OF CEMAIR - MILES VAN DER MOLEN

Q: How did you come up with the name CemAir? Our late partner Brian Bendall was the owner and CEO of Cemcrete, a company which specialises in cement products. Because of this association we decided to name-sake our business CemAir. Unfortunately Brian died in 2008 and the connection to Cemcrete has subsequently faded, but the name is definitively ours.

Q: Where did the inspiration and motivation come from that made you take the leap into the airline business? My parents were involved in aviation so from a young age I was exposed to the industry. After completing my studies I was unsure of which direction to pursue and because I am a commercial pilot I started flying charters. Over the years I naturally involved myself in the management side of aviation and only occasionally still fly a scheduled route

Q: How many aircraft currently make up the CemAir fleet, and are there any plans to increase that number in the future? Our total fleet includes 20 aircraft – the newest addition is a 37-seat Dash 8 aircraft which starts its work on the Margate and Plettenberg Bay routes in December. The Dash 8 is an exceptional aircraft offering the technical performance to operate from municipal and regional airports with limited runway length. The four-abreast cabin has full sized overhead stowage for baggage and a full service cabin. The rest of the fleet includes 9 x19-seater Beech1900’s and 10 x 50-seater CRJ regional jets.

Q: Do you see many competitors in the market and how does CemAir’s service differentiate you from other airlines in SA? CemAir services the Commuter and Regional Airline market competing against SA Airlink and SA Express. Since SA Express is State owned, SAA is a shareholder in Airlink and they all share a common booking system we are the only independent Commuter/Regional carrier in South Africa. We differentiate ourselves through the added convenience of the routes we service and pride ourselves on producing a personalised service offering.

Q: Where do you see the business in 5 years from now? We intend to maintain our strategy of slow manageable growth. We hope for modest fleet growth but we will look at ways in which we can improve the overall customer experience. This will include frequency of flights and number of destinations served. Our goals also include improvements to the airport infrastructure at some of our destinations as well as introducing the CRJ to some of our destinations.

Q: Tell us more about you, Miles? What do you like to do in your ‘downtime’? I am very passionate about my work and aviation is a dynamic and intense industry so downtime is limited. While I do spend large chunks of time fielding phone calls over weekends I tend to relax with a good bottle of red wine, plenty of delicious food and some good chatter and laughter with my wife Laura. I will spend some time watching a good Formula 1 Grand Prix race, ride a quad bike occasionally, and Laura and I love to travel and explore new places and see new things. What’s left of my spare time is spent doing home maintenance and building renovations.

Q: And finally, complete this phrase for us ‘If life gives you lemons…..? ……….learn about the market for lemons and start making some phone calls!
