| COVER FEATURE

Angela Larkan is an inspiring visionary, whose philanthropic efforts have won her countless awards.

10

COVER FEATURE | Angela Larkan is the co-founder of the non-profit organization Thanda, and it is here that she works tirelessly to bring hope to thousands of rural community members through her innovative model for communal change. She is clearly dedicated to creating a better South Africa for all and has demonstrated through her charity Thanda, that by empowering children in need at a grassroots level, an immense wave of positive change can be generated.

EMPOWERING CHANGE

THROUGHLOVE

You have had a wonderfully exciting journey so far on this incredible path. Tell us a little about how you got here? I grew up in Durban, swimming and going to ballet classes. When I was 12, we moved to the USA for my dad’s job and we were transferred yet again to London when I was 15. I went to Wesleyan University in the United States and after a few years of living in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, Tyler (my partner) and I moved back to South Africa. What inspired you to start Thanda, and why on the South Coast? When I was 19, I applied for a grant from my university because I wanted to conduct research in Zululand on different methods of support for children. I landed in Durban, rented a car, made business cards that said ‘researcher’, and started driving around rural communities, talking with mothers, professors, children and activists. What struck me the most was what a difference I could make, even at 19, and I haven’t really stopped since then. I wrote my thesis developing a new model of rural support using after-school programmes and school buildings in the afternoons, and in 2008 we moved to the South Coast to put all these dreams and research into practice. Thanda means “love” in Zulu… What made you settle on this as the name for this great initiative? What we do is all about love - we invest in people in rural communities, who go on to make their communities a better place. Through programmes that develop self-respect, active citizenship, care for the environment and a genuine curiosity for learning, Thanda empowers communities to create change. Change in individuals, change in the community and eventually change that will impact the world. What have been your greatest achievements so far? Our greatest achievement was setting up our rural 10 000 book library- the first, and still the only one in the entire municipality. Bringing books into the community has enabled an enormous amount of qualitative change, and consequantly literacy rates amongst children in Thanda have increased by 45%. Since then, we have won The Mail & Guardian Investing in the Future Award, The Southern Africa Trust Drivers of Change Award, and we’ve been a Levis Global Pioneer. These National and International awards have really helped to highlight our work on a global scale and have enabled us to grow.

| COVER FEATURE What have been your greatest challenges? Funding always remains our greatest challenge - our project is quite rural and so it has been a challenge to bring funders to see and support what we are doing. Over the years, there have been many challenges though: rats in the copy machine, flooding, chilli-power fixes for leaking radiators, and most recently, escape-artist piglets! What feeds your passion to do the work which you do? Witnessing the strength of people facing adversity gives me the courage to join them and find a better way forward. What has been key to your success? In a word – guts! Tyler’s amazing insight and innovative programme design have been crucial to this project, the talents of our wonderful managers and we ensure full involvement of our great local staff in all levels of decision making. And wine! What are Thanda’s plans for the future? We are keen to expand our after-school and organic farming programmes. We are also working to establish a Community Museum to record the rich oral history of the area, as well as develop an Early Childhood Development Centre for children under 5. Who are your personal heroes? Tyler - for moving across the world with a vision to bring our progressive educational programmes to life at Thanda.

The number of schools which are currently being supported by Thanda Their Early Childhood Development and After-School Programmes reach over 520 learners daily More than thirty jobs have been created for previously unemployed individuals in the community. Over a five-month period, learners from Grade R to Grade 4 demonstrated a 108% increase in literacy rates. 92% of Grade R to Grade 7 learners improved knowledge of foundational science by an average of 38 percentage points. Through Thanda’s After-School Feeding Programme, an average of 85 000 meals are served to learners annually.

95% of the high school pupils have started their own home gardens.

Thanda’s Agricultural Training and Mentorship Programme has supported ten farms which feed over 1000 community members. Thanda’s Agricultural Programme provides an income for 167 previously unemployed individuals.

COVER FEATURE | Angela and her partner Tyler Howard founded Thanda together in 2008 in an effort to pioneer different models of care for children in need. They are both passionate about the development of sustainable communities and recognize that nutritional and educational support is of paramount importance for all children.

Thanda provides an organic, cohesive solution to community care and upliftment by using this three prong approach: 1. The Early Childhood Development Programme provides educational activities from the Community Centre and provides learners with meals to ensure that they are well nourished and ready to learn. 2. The After-school Programme aims to develop motivated, life-long learners who are equipped with the confidence, knowledge and skills to improve their lives. The ingenuity of this model is that it utilises existing resources in an extremely cost effective manner: this initiative makes use of empty classrooms at local schools in the afternoons, and members from the community are hired and trained to become educational facilitators. The learners are fed a nutritious lunch whilst learning to engage in critical and creative thought. 3. Through the Agriculture Training and Mentorship Programme, Thanda is helping to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition. This incredible project is helping to develop self-sufficiency in cash dependent communities, encourages entrepreneurship and avails members of the community to valuable skills training.

THANDA IS 100% GREEN WITH THEIR BIODIGESTER, RAM PUMPS, WIND, AND SOLAR POWER. HOW CAN READERS GET INVOLVED AND SUPPORT THIS CHARITY? People can make a donation through their website at www.thanda.org and follow their work on Facebook!

THE SOUTH COAST IS BEAUTIFUL |

From puppies to pageants… Miss Petite Teen SA 2015 Winner, Creleisha Moodley, has a passion for animals. For someone who only started modelling in April 2014, thirteen-year-old Creleisha has chalked up an impressive list of achievements – at least one for each year of her age, ranging from Queen in the Port Shepstone Beachfront Coke Competition (June 2014), First Princess Miss Africa (October 2014) to Second Princess for the Face of Africa (May 2015), and more recently, walking away with the crown in the Miss Petite Teen SA 2015 pageant in May this year. Grade 8 comes with its own set of challenges, but Creleisha tries to make time for her schoolwork, without neglecting those near and dear to her. Being inspired by nature, she loves hiking, riding quad bikes with her family and playing with her two dogs. She plans to study veterinary science after school, testifying that her beauty is definitely more than skin deep. Tell us more about your school... Creston has a very large campus. Starting from grade R to grade 12. Creston also includes a wonderland for children with special needs.

“My dogs are my best friends”, says Creleisha, “even with their stinky breath, I love them more than pizza… and I love pizza!”

What do you like the most about school? I like Creston’s sport. They offer a lot of sports and that also keeps me fit. What is your favourite subject, and why? I like EMS (Economic Management Sciences) because it is very interesting to know what’s happening in the world today. In your opinion, what are the three main reasons why a tourist would visit the South Coast? Why wouldn’t they? This place is amazing, I guess a lot of people would come to visit our warm beaches. We have sugarcane and banana plantations, and blue lagoons. Tourists can also enjoy shark cage diving. How would your best friends describe you? They think I’m quiet most of the time. I like to laugh and make other people happy, am always willing to help and I am honest. Talented in everything I do and I have good manners - these are my best friend’s words. List three qualities you admire most in people? I like people who are kind and those that don’t mind acting silly. I like honest people and those that are trustworthy, optimistic and believe in themselves. I don’t like people being judgemental. Do you get involved in charity work, and if so, what are your thoughts about this? Yes I do and I love it. I think people should join me to help the less fortunate. Bringing smiles to them makes me happy. My group called “The Angels” love writing exams and I recently bought the girls gifts. I got them make up, nail kits and jewellery, they were over the moon! At the end of the day I’m happy to know I touched people’s hearts. Even a small act of kindness can lighten up someone’s day.

| THE SOUTH COAST IS BEAUTIFUL

Being beautiful is one facet of sparkly-eyed South Coaster, Kelly Upfold... Under the loving guidance of a mom who owns her own modelling school, Kelly has been raised amidst beauty and glamour, but more importantly, with insight into the discipline and demands of this very competitive industry. She has entered and won a number of contests to date, but not many pageants. Her most recent achievement? Being selected as a finalist in her age group for the prestigious Miss Jnr Teen SA 2015 pageant! This is no mean feat, as the contest opened with 7 000 entries. After a stringent selection process, Kelly was chosen as one of the top ten in her age group! At sweet sixteen Kelly can be described and bundle of energy and enthusiasm. Obviously she is beautiful, but it is her caring disposition that sets her apart. She lives a balanced life, devoting time to not only pageants, but to her schoolwork, sport, family and friends. Having a heart for others, she intends studying Human Rights Law once she matriculates from Port Shepstone High School.

GET TO KNOW KELLY… Tell us more about your school. I am a grade 10 student at a diverse school that really embraces the term “rainbow nation”. I have adapted to my school well, because I believe that no matter what your situation is, you can always find yourself. I am able to find myself, because my school has moulded me to the person I need to be. Did you know that a former Mrs South Africa Winner of 1967 attended Port Shepstone High School? What is your favourite subject, and why? History. I find it fascinating! Do you participate in sports? I do girls soccer at school. Are you pretty competitive, or do you just play for fun? I don’t find myself as a competitive person as I strive for memory not the trophy. In your opinion, what are the three main reasons why a tourist would visit the South Coast? Our laid-back lifestyle, great climate and the fact we have beautiful beaches, worthy of sharing with the world!

A 2.5km circuit was recently unveiled at the Dezzi Raceway in Port Shepstone. The stateof-the-art raceway is the only Motorsport South Africa (MSA) approved track in KZN and includes two purpose built drift tracks. Built on what used to be an airfield, the track overlooks the unspoiled beauty of the KZN South Coast. The track began as a single tarred runway for car testing, and later evolved to include two drift circuits, together offering eight possible variations (including the ability to race in both directions, enter from either side, as well as track elevations). A recently completed stretch of high-speed corners has joined the two drift tracks to form the full circuit The Dezzi Raceway offers fans all the amenities to make an unforgettable day at the races. There are two sets of open pits, one lock-up pit, an aeroplane hangar, viewing decks and banks, marshalling towers, hospitality zones, a timing office and briefing room, showers and toilets and a big entertainment area which is currently under construction.

Known for it’s big powerful right handers that grind off the point and run all the way to the beach. St Mikes is a reef point break and sandbar rolled into one. The swell hits a rocky reef on the corner of a tidal pool and then jacks up into a long wall that freight-trains onto the beach.

LUCIEN

Left hand point break. Good summer break, protected from the North East wind. Good shore break. Good-quality sand-bottomed point that refracts around a grassy hill lined with rocks. As with most South Coast point breaks, likes mild Westerlies and a three to six foot South groundswell.

SOUTHBROOM

A good quality sand bottomed point break that wraps around a grassy hill lined with rocks. Like most South Coast point breaks, it requires a light South Westerly and offers a three to six foot swell.

Fun beach break, with a big wave right hander that breaks off a reef further out off the tidal pool. Famous for nearby marine fossil beds, Trafalgar Beach is a fun beach break, with a big wave right-hander that breaks off a deep bombora reef on the outside. Long paddle out through pounding sandbars. The Dive Unit has a proud history being formed in 1994 and grew to more than 25 staff members across the province. Currently, the Unit has only eight active members, Lionel van Schoor, Conservation Manager Ballito, the oldest member (by age) who is often the brains behind the operations of retrieving and launching boats in challenging areas of the coastline. John Dives, District Conservation Officer Kenneth Stainbank, also a member since inception of the Unit, strives for the highest safety record. James Wood, District Conservation Officer Durban, who ensures the equipment is serviced and maintained as per legal requirements. Wayne Evans Prosecutions Officer, who trains the Unit in Underwater Crime Scene Investigation and recreational diver compliance. The scientific team includes Mondli Dlamini, an intern with the SANBI GroenSebenza Pioneer programme and Jennifer Olbers, Marine Ecologist who is responsible for undertaking and reporting on marine research within Ezemvelo. In addition to the divers, the Dive Unit is dependent on the boat skippers, which include Themba Luthuli, Aliwal Shoal MPA Skipper, and Paul Buchel, District Conservation Officer Durban Offshore.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife has a SCUBA Dive Unit for the purpose of undertaking research, compliance and assist various conservation stations within Ezemvelo in underwater maintenance. Although the main focus of the Dive Unit is scientific research, they are also is required to enforce the diving code-of-conduct on recreational divers, inspect diving permits within marine protected areas (MPA) and conduct underwater inspections on recreational divers.

For Ezemvelo to achieve their conservation and management goals effectively, the extent and location of the marine biodiversity in KZN as well as understanding the processes that affects their health and natural functioning needs to be addressed. To achieve this, Ezemvelo undertakes marine research on behalf of the National Department of Environmental Affairs, including monitoring the offshore environment within KZN. This monitoring is a long established reef programme aimed at detecting changes caused by either natural and anthropogenic disturbances or stress on the reefs throughout the province. Using this scientific information as a tool, conservation managers are advised and recommendations are made on improving current management strategies or preventing further damage. The reef monitoring programme has three components, the benthic or seafloor monitoring where specific indicators are used to analyse reef health, underwater temperature recorders which are maintained and the data downloaded twice a year from six sites along the KZN coast and a new component launched in early 2014, the Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV) surveys to analyse the fish communities and relative abundance. On any typical diving day, the Dive Unit undertake reef transects where data on reef cover and health are collected, temperature recorders are retrieved and redeployed with maintenance being taken on mounting blocks and four BRUVs are deployed per site.

Meet HEATHERCLARK

The legendary Heather Clark, who is also affectionately known as “Fergie” - a nickname she was given on the world tour, is one of South Africa’s most decorated female surfers and we are proud to call her one of our own!

PADDLE OUT 4 SHARKS

A platform that brings together beach users, conservationists, scientists and anyone who cares to honour and celebrate the role sharks play in our oceans.

What drives you in your passion for surfing? I love the ocean and growing up on the beach. While my dad was fishing, my mom Dawn would take my sister Brenda and I down to the beach and we would swim for hours - so when I started surfing, it was every day after school and all day on weekends. I just loved being in the ocean. Surfing with great friends and having good waves, surfing with dolphins, waking up early and being in the water and watching the sunrise has to be the best feeling.... and every sunrise is different and special, Its a clean, healthy sport. There’s nothing I love more! How did you get started with surfing, and how old were you? Well, my dad Dave and his brothers all surfed so its in the genes I guess! We used to live on the beachfront in Port Shepstone and all my guy friends surfed, so I thought to give it a go. I stood up after my 2nd wave and never looked back! I started surfing when I was 16 - I’m now 44 and still surf every day. What are your biggest accomplishments to date? In 2000 I became the first and only South African, male or female, to ever win the prestigious Vans Triple Crown of Surfing in Hawaii, by far one of my most memorable achievements. I spent 14 years on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, 8 of which were spent on the World Championship Tour (WCT) which consists of the top 16 girls in the world. I made many finals and had numerous victories on tour. It’s always an honor to represent your country. I represented South Africa at numerous Open and Masters World Games in which I won 2 Masters World Titles.

How did you get involved in the Paddle out for Sharks initiative? My good friend Olivia Symcox, and Beulah and Roland Mauz from African Dive Adventures approached me last year to get involved which I was very happy to do. Last year we got a small group of people together and paddled out to the shark nets to create awareness of the importance of protecting the sharks in our oceans. This year was a lot bigger and we had a good turn out of people at St Mikes. Roland gave a very informative talk explaining what the Paddle Out was about and bringing attention to how much marine life gets caught and killed in the shark nets on a daily basis. What makes living on the South Coast so special? I was born in Port Shepstone and with the South Coast being so small, I have had so much support from everyone in our little town. I’m very blessed... to enjoy uncrowded surf when it is cooking with only a handful of people out! And having all my family , friends and loved ones around me all the time makes living on the Coast a very special place. What is next for you? Tell us more about your plans for the rest of the year… I have the Open and Masters SA Champs coming up in August in Richards Bay. My dream is to make my surf camp (www.heatherclarksurf.com) a full time project, injecting the knowledge I have gained throughout my years on tour into the young passionate groms. This includes surf lessons, school camps and surf trips. I want to give back to the sport that I love and live.

ATTRACTING WILD BIRDS TO YOUR INDIGENOUS GARDEN

Geoff Nichols

A garden is intended to be an oasis of calm, a place to relax and a sanctuary from the troubles of daily life particularly for those of us who live in more urban areas... A garden should be a personal Eden, a place of peace and beauty, heady with the scent of flower, and laced with the sound of birdsong. It is possible to create such a space - even in the smallest of gardens, and with the correct planting choices you will find that nature can flourish anywhere. Wild birds, with their fascinating colours and enchanting melodies, are a welcome addition to any garden, and the South Coast’s Izinyoni Nursery is on hand to provide some valuable insight into the best ways to attract them to yours. According to renowned horticulturalist and indigenous plant expert Geoff Nichols, “Wild birds all have their own way of life and will slot into a habitat or area created by you which provides some sort of resource or a combination of resources”. Therefore, in order for wild birds to take up residence in your garden, you must make them feel at home. The best way to do this is to replicate their natural environment by choosing the plants and trees that they naturally rely on in the wild for food, water and shelter. If you hope to turn your garden into a haven for local birdlife, your planting

choices must meet at least one of these requirements. In order to copy nature successfully, it is best to choose indigenous plant and tree species for your garden.Indigenous plants have a number of benefits. As well as attracting birds and other wildlife, these plants are perfectly adapted for the weather and soil of the South Coast, meaning that they are less water hungry than exotic species and are easier to grow successfully. When it comes to choosing plant and tree species that will attract birds to your garden, you need to consider which species provide good nesting spots for birds, and which ones will provide them with food. For example, fig trees are a good choice as their soft wood provides those birds that need a hole to nest in (like woodpeckers and barbets) with an excellent nesting site; whilst their fruit not only caters to nectar-eating bird species, but also attracts insects that will in turn provide sustenance for insectivorous birds. The fig tree Ficus natalensis is an indigenous species for KwaZulu-Natal, and is available for purchase alongside other fig species at Izinyoni Nursery.

Izinyoni Nursery brings you all the natural beauty that characterises the mid-South Coast. Located in Crocworld Conservation Centre, you will find a wide selection of indigenous flowers, trees, aloes, ground covers and succulents. Inzinyoni Nursery is located 52 km South West of Durban, 2.5km North West of Scottburgh and approximately 200m from the Indian Ocean. In December 1997 Wild 5 Adventures opened the highest commercial abseil in the world. In 1998 the first white water rafting adventure was launched on the Umzimkhulu River. Four years later, on 15th June 2002, the ultimate rush of all time, the Wild Swing, was opened.

“From the age of 11, I used to stand at the top of Oribi Gorge, looking down. It was my dream to jump off the edge (without hurting myself, that is)...”, Paul Jefferys, owner of Wild 5 Adventures reflects. “There’s a saying that goes along these lines: If you can dream it, do it! We did it, and now you can too! The wild swing is every thrill seeker’s dream come true.”

Since then a wide range of adrenaline (and relaxed) activities have been introduced, catering for all types of adventurers. Experience the ultimate rush! Situated at the top of Lehr’s Waterfall, this is the highest swing in the world. Leap off the edge of the waterfall to swing into the gaping depths of the gorge - 165m (55 Storeys), and accelerate to 120km/hour in 2.5 seconds. Bragging rights are guaranteed! Abseil down a 110m Cliff face, alongside Lehr’s waterfall, and experience a new dimension in sightseeing! Determine your own pace in one of the world’s highest commercial abseils. The first 45m is a cliff abseil, while the remaining 65m is a free abseil, allowing you to take in the beauty of the gorge from a different angle. If you can’t muster up the courage to do the swing or abseil, this option is just for you. Experience solitary bliss as you slide along the Zip-line that spans across the gorge, 165m above the treetops. Strapped securely in a full body harness, you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of Lehr’s Waterfall and Baboon’s Castle! If you’re more of an aqua-adventurer, join our experienced guides in challenging the grade 2 to 4 rapids of the Umzimkhulu River. Half- and two- day trips are available, with the latter including a camp-over on the river bank.

There are many ways to enjoy the view sites, other than by car. Take a gentle hike or a more strenuous climb (down a rocky climbing path) to the bottom of the Gorge. Mountain bikers can follow the scenic single track, meandering along the top of the gorge. If you are in the mood for something a little more energetic, it’s Game on! Escape into fantasy in one of 3 themed paintball arenas! Leisure and Corporate packages include facilitation & all equipment.

| LIVING IN PARADISE The South Coast is blessed to have a resident colony of Cape Vultures in the Umzimkulu Valley, which is about 30km inland from the coast.

THEORIBIGORGE Located close to the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve & NPC Conservancy, the Vulture Hide is a highlight on the local tourist route. Visitors and photographers are able to observe Cape Vultures in their natural habitat. Oribi buck and Black-backed Jackal may also be encountered. These magnificent birds are classified as a vulnerable species which is near endemic to Southern Africa. They live in colonies seldom greater than 100 pairs, nesting on cliff ledges where they lay normally 1 egg which they incubate for about 57 days. They are monogamous birds, pairing for life. Being carrion eaters, they travel great distances looking for carcasses to feed on – which also makes them vulnerable to poisoning. Another huge threat to them is high powered electrical lines. The Barry Porter Memorial Vulture Viewing Hide overlooks a ‘vulture restaurant’ on the site of a breeding colony of over 120 Cape Vultures, which is incorporated in the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve. With a threatened global population of just 8,000 Cape Vultures, this is a very significant colony. The Oribi Gorge Vulture Hide gives you the opportunity to observe and photograph these majestic birds at close range. For rates and bookings visit: www.vulturehide.blogspot.com

Celebrating the work of a Master ~ ERROL STEPHEN BOYLEY ~ 1918 - 2007

Errol Stephen Boyley was born in 1918 in Pietermaritzburg and passed away in the same city in 2007 leaving behind his legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest artists who mastered contemporary realism. His legacy continues on walls adorned by his wonderful paintings in family homes, corporate offices and galleries all over the world. Having spent the better part of 20 years living and painting here in Ramsgate on the South Coast in the 70’s and 80’s this exhibition hosted by Riverbend Art Gallery serves as a celebration of his incredible life and work. Infrequently the art world produces an artist of exceptional talent who combines technical skills with an eye for exquisite subject material. Added to this, a deep understanding and interpretation of “the lie of the land”, its creatures, culture, climate and social mood, are also essential ingredients for exceptional art pieces. In Errol Boyley we find all these qualities, his intimate knowledge and love of his environment, his exceptional interpretation of his subject matter and his ability to depict down-to-earth subjects in a straightforward naturalistic manner, make him one of South Africa’s great contemporary realists. A term used in its narrow sense to denote a style of painting which emerged in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It is characterized by figurative works executed in a raw objective style, without the distortions of Cubist or Expressionist interpretation. The object is to portray the “real” rather than the ideal, depicting subjects of everyday life without any alteration or interpretation. Contemporary Realists deliberately rejected abstract art, choosing instead to depict down-to-earth subjects in a straightforward naturalistic manner. Errol Boyley and John Meyer remain two of South Africa’s greatest exponents of this style of painting and have both capitalised on exquisite subject material offered by this wonderful country.

Errol Boyley predominantly painted in oils and while he is best remembered for his landscapes, he produced exceptional still life studies, wonderful seascapes, figure paintings and wildlife scenes. With the support of many people this exhibition will profile an array of his paintings many of which are being loaned for the purpose of the exhibition. Also to be exhibited are paintings which have never been viewed by the general public loaned from artists and his wife Jocelyn to whom we are indebted. This exhibition will afford the public the opportunity to participate, appreciate, invest and celebrate in the works of a truly remarkable South African artist. This exhibition opens on Thursday night 24th September and runs until Wednesday 30th September.

SINCE 2006 RIVERBEND ART GALLERY HAS HOSTED AN ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION WHICH COINCIDES WITH A WEEKEND OF WINE AND MUSIC IN EARLY SPRING. THIS YEAR THE EVENT, NOW WELL KNOWN AS THE SOUTH COAST SPRING WINE FESTIVAL, IS ONCE AGAIN DELIGHTED TO WELCOME SPIER WINE ESTATE AS THE FESTIVALS TITLE SPONSOR.
