Acclaimed artist, playwright, actress, drama teacher, singer and songwriter,

Barbie loves telling stories, and reading them… Shakespeare and Herman Charles Bosman are among her favourite storytellers. It is this passion for stories that led her to theatre, a road which has meandered and forked into a multitude of paths, each laden with creative treasures. 6

southcoaststyle

These include: Chocolate, a musical comedy that takes a look at chocolate, through the centuries, A Leopard, A Tree, Bosman, You & Me, a comedy about the life of author Herman Charles Bosman. Bosman’s Women, is a drama laced with comedy and wit, giving insight into Bosman’s personal life, from the perspective of the women in his life, and most recently, Bosman in the Gallows, is a play based on Bosman’s book A cold stone jug, are further Bosman-inspired plays.

Barbie not only pens her plays, she also produces and acts in them. Her most recent production was directed by her artist husband, Marke, who enjoys spending time behind the camera when he is not busy creating sculptures in his home studio. Her formal training includes a degree in Art history & English (UNISA, 1995), and more recently a Speech & Drama Licentiate (LTSD), which she graduated cum laude (Speech and Drama College of SA, 2009).

ON PERFORMING

I’m a relatively shy person but I somehow feel safe on a stage. I prefer performing to, say, wandering about at a party doing the ‘small talk’ thing. It’s what comes naturally to me – I love to communicate with people using stories and humour.

Tell us about your most recent show Bosman in the Gallows...

You’re a rooinek girl playing an Afrikaans man – does it work?!

Expect to learn a little prison slang…or ‘colourful, earthy conversation’ as Bosman calls it (although I know my mom would call it be a few other names!). The piece is based on Herman Charles Bosman’s book: Cold Stone Jug, which is slang for prison.

I believe so. I think the fact that I specifically don’t try to hide the fact that I physically look like a women is a fresh and contemporary take on his work. My gestures, accents and conversation I hope are believable – thanks to my tenacious (and rather fierce) Director, Bets Basson. The whole ‘girl thing’ is often a conversation point. In one delightful crit at the Grahamstown Festival, the caption was: “…the protected male turf of Herman Charles Bosman was plundered by a woman… she did the job admirably.

At the age of 21 Bosman was sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of his step-brother. He claimed he thought his brother was an intruder, although it was generally conceded that he did it in a fit of rage (sounds very much like a modern day case does it not?!). Bosman ended up serving only 4 and a half years and this book is a semi-autobiographical account of these experiences: powerful, witty, courageous and in places, just darn funny! One ends up laughing at the pure humanness of the whole situation – it’s a kind of a dark humour – you laugh when you really know you shouldn’t. It’s filled with pathos and power. I have to admit that I did sneak an Oom Schalk Story in at the end of this play – how could I possibly resist?

You have written and compiled 6 plays on Herman Charles Bosman, why him? I love the way he writes as well as his incredible knack he has for telling a story. He knows exactly what NOT to say!He was also such an interesting and intricate man in real life… both incredibly good and horrendously bad.

This play shows that women can do anything men can do. Even play Oom Schalk Lourens!”

What else is in the pipeline?

I have performed in many other plays, performance art and musicals (singing is perhaps my first love), and am working on another which will be ready for 2015. On the lighter, and dare I say sillier side, I do have an insane love for improvisation. We had a very successful, local Show last year entitled “Who’s Lion is it Anyway?” I hunted down a great team, notorious for their comedic skills. We arranged an evening where we have four semi-sane players performing spontaneous scenes on the spot, vying for the coveted prize: the Lion trophy. There really was no script, and the audience and Judges gave us the topics on the night. We will definitely be doing another one this year, some of the players may be different but the rules are the same: there are none!

Celebrating a Mad Hatter’s tea party in Barbie Meyer’s new kitchen is every bit as fantastic as Lewis Caroll’s fairy-tale. Now where shall I start! “Begin at the beginning,” the King said, very gravely, “and go on till you come to the end: then stop.” Lewis Carroll, from Alice in Wonderland. I hold out my polka dot teacup for a refill, half expecting the white rabbit to come rushing past. My eyes follow our hostess, who is now serving generous helpings of decadent chocolate cake to her eclectic circle of friends. At Barbie’s request everyone is dressed in black and white, with hats as flamboyant and fabulous as the kitchen table, which is brimming with an assortment of sugary treats. Suddenly I am Alice, the new world I find myself immersed in filled with colourful characters that are both larger than life yet salt-of-the-earth authentic. There is something magical about spending time in Barbie’s new kitchen, amidst the laughter, her teapot collection and signature pink bits and bobs. In the looking glass Barbie may be petite, but her personality, sense of humour and kind nature can fill an entire room. I lean forward to dip a strawberry in Chantilly cream and find myself grinning like a Cheshire cat. 8

GET TO KNOW BARBIE... Do you collect anything?

Mice and teapots…by default really. I do love a proper cup of tea in a proper teapot – and so over the years friends and foe have given me the most delightful pots – and I love all of them. And mice? I just think mice are rather nice…

How many in your family? Has your birth order affected you?

GET TO KNOW BARBIE’S ARTY FRIENDS... Karen and Cas Bodley: Karen is a very dear, crazy, dependable and incredible friend that I met at Church here on the South Coast. She and Cas now both work up in Durban – Karen teaches at Marist Stellar College. Karen is an amazing event decorator, has incredible flair and a huge giving and warm heart. Karen was instrumental in setting this beautiful table for our tea! Clare Gaze: I met Clare at our very first ColaborArt. ColaborArt was a wonderful space where progressive and experimental arts were exhibited: fine art, music, poetry, dance, performance which happened on a magical night chosen by the artists. Heather Bense: Heather and I met in Grade 7 and have been friends ever since. We went to school in Howick and both come from farming families. Melissa Bense: Is my god child and Heather’s daughter. She and I share the same taste in clothes, shoes and jewellery – and we both love to wear our shiny things in the day. Anton Benzon: crazy, wonderful local painter – in fact, he is considered one of South Africa’s leading impressionistic painters. Anton is an iconoclast who has the most wonderful sense of humour – he is completely unpretentious and I just love him to bits. Di Erasmus: Di is another amazing local artist and is inspired by nature and creates the most incredible landscapes. Di has the kindest heart and is an amazing friend. Everett & Frances Duarte: One of the coast’s most intriguing double. Both are abstract artists in their own right and also create art together under the name of Mpenja. They spend part of the year and Europe and the other here on the coast… and their love of course has resulted in Santi Duarte… also my precious god child.

I’m the youngest of 5...and the best – bear with me and I’ll tell you why. It’s wonderful to be the last born in a pack…by then your mom and dad have loosened up & changed into sane human beings & wonderful parents. And you have your brothers and sisters to teach you the important stuff, shield you from the awful stuff and pick you up at the zoo.

Have you forgiven yourself for past personal failures?

Absojollylutely. Without failure there is no learning or progress. I have been extremely fortunate to learn the wonderful skill of failing with gay abandon – the basis of Improvisation.

What are you are thankful for?

My upbringing, Marke, my mind, my healthy body, my extraordinary Polish father, my incredibly perceptive mother, chocolate, good movies, humour, friends and wit.

What inspires you?

I am inspired by hundreds of things daily: the water lilies that constantly flower in our dam, my students, the vitality and enthusiasm in my nephews, nieces and God-children; well written tunes and intelligent lyrics, a good book, dance.

Best thing that your mother ever taught you? That people are more important than things.

Best thing that your father ever taught you? Nobody is indispensible.

Things you can’t live without?

4 m’s: Music, Marke, Mirth and Mchocolate! (okay that doesn’t start with an M – but it’s something that I need as opposed to want).

What do you love most about the South Coast?

The flowering aloes in winter, the full moon over the ocean, the St. Joseph’s lilies along the highways and the ‘village’ feel.

DRAMA CLASSES WITH BARBIE... I absolutely love teaching, and am almost convinced that I learn more from my students than they do from me. I teach anybody from ages 7 to 107! Her classes take place weekly, at Margate Country Club. Absolutely everyone is welcome. Visit Barbie’s website for more info www.barbiemeyer.com or call her on 039 315 7225 or 082 496 3545.

Thia Hulme: Thia is dynamite in size 3 shoes! She was and is one of my students in my adult Drama Class but I think she really teaches me far more than I her! Galia Hillhouse: I originally met Galia through ColaborArt and have always had respect for her wonderful writing. Galia has since joined my adult Drama Classes and is an absolute tonic!

If there was a special category called ‘Charm’ when ranking golf courses, then Southbroom Golf Club would be up near the top of the list. ~ S A Golf Digest

Exceeding Expectations

Derek James. The name is synonymous with Southbroom Golf Club. In 1997, Derek and his then ‘caddy’ wife retired from the professional circuit and settled into family-life in Southbroom. Derek’s achievements are unprecedented – he has won the two prestigious PGA awards of Club Professional of the Year and Teaching Professional of the Year twice and he has scooped them both in one year – this year!

RANKED #10 BEST CONDITIONED IN KZN

His wife Sheena lends amazing strength to his bow, or is it her bow? Either way, Southbroom Golf Club is a better place for having the James team on board. Derek serves as Golf Director and Sheena manages the front-of-house and well-stocked golf shop.

Gavin Sole joined the Southbroom team as General Manager in 2013 and comes with excellent golfing and hospitality credentials. Gavin’s inter-provincial golfing career spans 18 years and two provinces and he still represents KwaZulu-Natal when not attending to the needs of the members and many visitors who play Southbroom. Gavin previously carved a career in the management of game and country lodges and is now passionate about exceeding expectations in the golf club management industry. Duty Manager Robert Sikobi is another well-known face having dedicated 30 years to the South Coast golfing fraternity – a decade waitering at Southbroom, a decade managing the old St Michael’s Golf Club, and a decade back at Southbroom where he now heads the beverage and hospitality component.

Charl Potgieter is Greens Superintendant and spends his days out on the golf course ensuring that Southbroom stays ranked among the 100 top courses in South Africa. Charl qualified in Turfgrass Management in 1995 and served The Lost City before joining Southbroom. He then went off to broaden his experience with Evergreen Turf in Johannesburg where he looked after two golf courses and prepared Bloemfontein’s Vodacom Park for the Confederation Cup. Perhaps it was the harsh climate that drove Charl back to the South Coast, perhaps it was the Southbroom “call that is heard by many a golfing fanatic! Charl is ably assisted by Course Foreman George Nyawoza who has learnt all the tricks of the trade through hard work and experience. George has served Southbroom for 29 years and his commitment to his team and the task at hand is exemplary. Come home to Southbroom. Members and visitors welcome. Planning your holiday? There is no doubt that technology has transformed the way we book accommodation, allowing us to go online after office hours to search, at leisure for the best place at the best price. Although the boons of online booking far outweigh the banes, it is always a good idea to do your homework before parting with your hard-earned dosh. It is no secret that scamsters have recently started targeting the travel industry. This is not a local issue, but a global trend. Be proactive. Make a few calls. Check that the establishment you are interested in is registered on reputable travel/booking sites.

South Coast district tourism authority, Ugu South Coast Tourism recently stated in a press release:

As only accommodation registered with the Tourism sector have been verified, it is advisable that when making your booking, that you do this through either a reputable local letting agent or contact one of our many tourism offices to verify the accommodation and book with one of Ugu South Coast Tourism members

2 TOP DIVE SITES The KZN South Coast is home to two internationally-known dive sites, namely Protea Banks and Aliwal Shoal, the latter having being rated by Jacques Cousteau as one of the top 10 sites in the world.

ALIWAL SHOAL

PROTEA BANKS

Lying 4km out to sea off the coast of Umkomaas, Aliwal Shoal offers a great variety of marine life, from Nudibranchs to Manta Rays. Recognised as one of the top ten dive sites in the world, Aliwal Shoal is home to soft and hard coral, eels, turtles, fish, rays and sharks. Whale sharks, whales and dolphins often visit the reef, which is situated on the inside edge of the Mozambique current, thus offering divers warm water and great visibility.

Suitable only for the more seasoned diver, Protea Banks is internationally recognised as one of the most impressive shark dives in the world. Situated 7.5km offshore from Shelly Beach, Protea Banks, like Aliwal Shoal, is essentially a fossilised sand bank. Stretching over a distance of about 6km, the reef lies at a depth of between 27 and 40 meters. It is home to a rich diversity of marine life, and is often frequented by game fish such as Barracuda, Yellowtail, Kingfish and Potato Bass. The area is also one a rich Tuna ground, resulting in impressive Zambezi (Bull shark)sightings. Other shark species that frequent the reef are Scalloped Hammerheads (and occasionally Great Hammerheads), Blacktip, Dusky, Guitar and Ragged Tooth sharks, which are a highlight for divers during the winter months. Tiger sharks are also spotted on the reef from time to time.

Named after the 3-mast ship that collided with it in 1849, this rocky reef is also home to shipwrecks such as the ‘Produce’ and the ‘Nebo’, which are suitable for more experienced divers, and worth exploring. Other dive spots include Raggie’s Cave (situated at a maximum depth of 18 metres), a cave often occupied by Ragged Tooth Sharks during the winter months, Shark Alley (depth of 24 metres), a gulley that drops off from Raggie’s Cave, home to a number of Potato Bass and Manta Point (maximum depth of 200 metres), frequented by a large variety of colourful reef fish and, as the name implies, magnificent Manta Rays.

The two hotspots on the reef are:The Southern Pinnacles: Dived mainly in the summer months, with depths ranging from 26 to 40 metres. The Northern Pinnacles: Dived mainly in the winter months, with depths ranging from 30 to 38 metres.

EZEMVELO KZN WILDLIFE’S DIVE TEAM The marine division has formed a dedicated and highly trained dive team, comprising 12 commercial class 3 & 4 divers and 3 Zulu speaking trainee divers. These staff members are stationed along our coastline and over and above their normal management functions, they play a vital role in the offshore compliance, awareness and monitoring programmes within and outside our marine protected areas, these being the enforcement of the Marine Living Resources Act, promotion of voluntary compliance and awareness in the diving industry and data collection.

ONLY 90 MINUTES to the South Coast from JHB

Humpbacks migrate annually from summer feeding grounds near the poles to warmer winter breeding waters closer to the Equator. Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection. Females nurse their calves for almost a year, though it takes far longer than that for a Humpback whale to reach full adulthood. Calves do not stop growing until they are ten years old. Courtship rituals take place during the winter months, following migration toward the equator from summer feeding grounds closer to the poles. Females typically breed every two or three years, with the gestation period being 11 and half months. The peak months for birth are January, February, July, and August, with usually a one- to two–year period between Humpback births. These incredible creatures can live for up to 48 years. Humpbacks, known to be a friendly species, often interact with other cetacean species such as bottlenose dolphins. A humpback whale can easily be identified by its stocky body with an obvious hump and black dorsal colouring. The head and lower jaw are covered with knobs called tubercles, which are hair follicles, and are characteristic of the species. Humpback whales are known for their magical songs, which travel for great distances through the world’s oceans. These sequences of moans, howls, cries, and other noises are quite complex and often continue for hours on end. Scientists are studying these sounds to decipher their meaning. It is most likely that humpbacks sing to communicate with others and to attract potential mates. Found in oceans and seas around the world, Humpback whales typically migrate up to 25,000 kilometres each year. Humpbacks are powerful swimmers, and they use their massive tail fin - called a fluke, to propel themselves through the water and sometimes completely out of it. These whales, like others, regularly leap from the water, landing with a tremendous splash. Scientists aren’t sure if this breaching behaviour serves some purpose, such as cleaning pests from the whale’s skin, or whether whales simply do it for fun.

BONNY RICHARDSON IS NO STRANGER TO PUSHING HER LIMITS! Bonny is no stranger to pushing her limits - she took on the challenge to climb Kilimanjaro to raise funds for cancer, jumped off the bridge at Vic Falls and took up the challenge of starting in a new industry with a new business in a new area all at the age of 55! Camelot Spa at San Lameer has grown exponentially since opening its doors three and a half years ago, and this growth comes down to the commitment and savvy business mind of its owner Bonny Richardson. If you were a television viewer in the 90’s, you will remember this gorgeous blue-eyed blonde who offered invaluable consumer and product advice on her popular show “Bonny’s Best Buys”. With her passionate approach and a commitment to service excellence, Bonny and her Spa intend to keep up the highest level of merit and make the South Coast proud!

BONNY’S BEST BEAUTY TIPS

TO SLOW DOWN THE AGEING PROCESS

AVOID SMOKING

Cigarettes compromise your skin’s production of collagen and elastin, making smoking bad news for your looks as well as your health. Product Tip: Visibly reduce the appearance of fine lines and deep wrinkles with Thalgo’s Hyaluronic Cream. A high-performance anti-wrinkle cream, formulated with firming Marine Hyaluronic Acid to hydrate & rejuvenate skin.

SLEEP ON YOUR BACK

More than half of adults sleep in the foetal position, curled up on their side with knees tucked in. Train yourself to sleep on your back so that your skin doesn’t lie crumpled against the pillow.

BONNY RICHARDSON FROM CAMELOT SPA

Both in her personal capacity and professionally, Bonny and the Spa boast a long list of awards to their names. (See Page ....)

SEEK SHADE ON AEROPLANES

You’re much closer to the sun in a plane than on land, so it stands to reason that solar rays, which can penetrate windows, are more intense at higher altitudes. If you’re sitting next to a window, pull down the shade, drink plenty of water to hydrate, and avoid salty foods and alcohol during the flight.

Bonny Recommends

Thalgo’s Silicium Concentrate utilises Marine Silicium to help restructure, smooth and redefine sagging skin.

MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT

Repeatedly losing and gaining weight can take its toll on your face’s elasticity, leaving behind jowls and sagging. Putting on weight can make your skin look plumper on the surface, but carrying excess weight can cause your body’s levels of insulin and cortisol to rise, which can break down collagen. Maintain a healthy weight with proper diet and exercise, aiming to keep your weight in the ’normal’ range, with a body mass index (BMI) between 18.5 and 24.9.

Camelot Spa at San Lameer offer a range of skin treatments to combat the signs of ageing, please contact them for a consultation on 039 313 0642.

THE UMTENTWENI CONSERVANCY We enjoy a mutually beneficial working relationship with Hibiscus Coast Municipality, which has developed over the past 3 years. We now employ 10 local people who have been trained in alien plant identification and herbicide application, this project helps with alien plant control and security by visually opening up bushy areas. Alex Skene

THE HONOURABLE MAYOR, CLLR. CYNTHIA MQWEBU OF HIBISCUS COAST MUNICIPALITY WITH ALEX SKENE. THE CHAIRMAN OF THE UMTENTWENI CONSERVANCY AT THE OPENING OF THE UMTENTWENI WHALE DECK The mission of the Conservancy is the protection of our fauna and flora. The Umtentweni area stretches from the Umzimkulu River to the Umtentweni River and up to the Toll Road, approximately 750ha.

THE RIVER WALK WHICH STARTS AT PORT SHEPSTONE COUNTRY CLUB

The Umtentweni Conservancy was formed in 2007. In 2012, they had 5 paid up members. The membership now exceeds 200, including businesses and families. The Conservancy has worked tirelessly to form a good relationship with the local Municipality and through this, they assist each other. Together with the Municipality, they started a recycling depot in Umtentweni with 4 containers which were cleared once a week. There are now 8 bins, cleared three times a week. A project to build a Whale Viewing Deck was undertaken and built by the members. The entire cost of this project was sponsored by local business and individuals, with the Municipality offering the land. They also realised that the clearing of the bush in their area undertaken by the Municipality and contractors were indiscriminate - in that a lot of indigenous trees and plants were being destroyed. They approached the Municipal Manager and suggested that this project rather be undertaken by the Conservancy. They now do the plot clearing, only removing alien plants and pruning and controlling the indigenous flora. The Conservancy have employed and trained staff members to undertake this project, the proceeds of which are then used by the Conservancy for the control of other areas and projects. They were approached by Coco-Cola Fortune who had a grant for the eradication of alien plants on the Umzimkulu River. They cleared 22ha. Whilst working on this project, the conservancy team discovered a road that had been built along the river bank in 1902 got washed away in the 1959 floods. They approached the South Coast Tourism who assisted in sponsoring them to open and clear a River Walk Nature Trail.

THE RIVER WALK NATURE TRAIL OPENING

Work parties are organised for the community to join in were high crime areas have been highlighted by the local Crime Prevention Forum. They go in and clear these plots \ areas. Once these areas have been cleared illegal squatters that lived there are exposed and move on. They also take part in and organise clean-ups of the beaches, rivers and streets. Their future plans are to have the Umzimkulu Valley from the mouth up to Batstones Drift, an area of approximately 80ha, declared a nature reserve, with picnic site facilities. There is small wet land in this area where they are hoping to build a bird hide.

In August this year, South Coast Hospice will host its 3rd annual sugar cane mountain bike event. The event is held in Izotsha on the lower South Coast annually and the track stretches across five sugar cane fields. The event consists of 3 races; a 45km, the 25km and a 12km race. Halfway Toyota and Illovo Sugar have once again joined forces to support this event in an effort to raise much needed funds for South Coast Hospice’s care and support programmes for patients with life-threatening illnesses. The event takes place on Sunday the 10th August 2014 and promises to be a day filled with fun for children and adults alike, food stalls, games and loads more on offer on the day. There are great prizes up for grabs, so make it a family day and support Hospice in its efforts to raise funds for patient care! Register at www.roag.co.za

Brian Jones, Dealer Principle of Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach had this to say:

Halfway Toyota Shelly Beach is once again proud to be associated with the Halfway Toyota Illovo Sugar Challenge for 2014 as a major co-sponsor! We feel this is a very worthy event in our community with funds raised going to a great organisation, Hospice!” Illovo Sugar Umzimkulu’s Managing Director, Vis Pillay shared his thoughts on this year’s partnership:

Illovo Sugar is proud to be joint sponsors of the Hospice Cycle race once again this year. Cycling through the lush cane fields of the South Coast will give the cyclists a breath of fresh air as they wind through the magnificent, scenic routes. Illovo supports a healthy and active lifestyle and our association with Hospice shows our commitment to social responsibility. Illovo strive to be present and add value in all the communities in which we operate. We wish all the cyclists a successful and safe ride, especially our teens.
