This rocky reef is named after the 3-mast ship -The Aliwal - that collided with the reef in 1849. It is located approximately 5km off the coast of KZN, with Umkomaas being the closest launch site. As it is situated on the inside edge of the Mozambiquan current, divers can look forward to warm water and great visibility. Aliwal Shoal is home to a diversity of marine life: soft and hard coral , eels, turtles, fish, rays and sharks. Whale sharks, whales and dolphins also often visit the reef, which has become recognized as one of the top ten dive sites in the world.

In the days before media, stories were kept alive by the storytellers of old. Legends and eye-witness accounts of historical events were written in the memories of the wise old women and men of the community, who told these tales with great reverence and animation to the younger generations. Each generation would herald new storytellers, individuals who would be honoured with the privilege of keeping these stories alive.

The coastal village of Umkomaas, set alongside the southern bank of the river Umkhomazi, is the setting for such a story. According to Zulu legend, King Shaka personally named the river, which means the place of cow whales after he witnessed a cow whale giving birth to her calf in the waters of the mouth. The new mother and her calf proceeded to bond by playing in the water, their audience captivated.

It is important to remember that all recreational anglers are required to purchase fishing permits, which are available from any South African Post Office.

ANGLERS CODE OF CONDUCT: Only take what you need! Tag and Release fishing can be just as satisfying! If you catch an undersized fish, handle it in such a manner as to ensure the best chance for survival when released. Educate yourself about the status of different species and stay seafood legal . Go to for a comprehensive list of healthy, compromised and endangered species. Recreational fishermen of are constrained by bag limits of most linefish species on a per day basis, and/or minimum sizes. In addition, recreational fishing is limited to certain times of the angling season No fish caught by recreational fishermen (including divers) may be sold, but may only be used for personal consumption. Permits are required to harvest, sell, import or export marine resources. Always clear away your litter and leave your fishing vicinity in a pristine state.

of Shaka's Shaka's Isivavane (LUCKY HEAP OF PEBBLES)

Folklore reveals that the Mzumbe river region was once home to a tribe of Hlongwa cannibals. In 1828, whilst leading a raid into Pondoland and the Transkei, the legendary Zulu king, Shaka, came across these cannibals. The battle that followed led to the loss of many Hlongwa lives and the destruction of their villages. Back on route, King Shaka and his impis arrived on a crest overlooking the KwaMalukaka river (a tributary of the Mzumbe). At this spot the king implored his forefathers for their blessing on his mission by performing an ancient ritual. Using the toes of his left foot, he picked up a pebble, which he then transferred to his right hand. After spitting on it, he uttered a prayer and placed it on the ground. One at a time, Shaka's impis re-enacted the routine and before long a large mound had risen from the ground. Oribi Gorge is the eastern gorge of two gorges that cuts through the Oribi Flats (flat sugarcane farmlands), Southern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The western gorge was formed by the Mzimkulu river. At the base of the cliffs of both gorges there are rocks over 1000 million years old while the cliffs themselves are formed from sandstone deposited about 365 million years ago.

Gyps coprotheres The South Coast is blessed to have a resident colony of Cape Vultures in the Umzimkulu Valley, which is about 30km inland from the coast. These magnificent birds are classified as a vulnerable species which is near endemic to Southern Africa. They live in colonies seldom greater than 100 pairs, nesting on cliff ledges where they lay normally 1 egg which they incubate for about 57 days. They are monogamous birds, pairing for life. Being carrion eaters, they travel great distances looking for carcasses to feed on - which also makes them vulnerable to poisoning. Another huge threat to them is high powered electrical lines. WEZINTOMBI EZINQOLENI MAIDENS CEREMONY

To honour oneÂ&#x2019;s heritage is to honour oneself...

Umgubho Wezintombi is an annual ceremony of the maidens which is a pre cursor to Umkhosi Womhlanga eNyokeni, held at KwaNyuswa under Ezinqoleni Local Municipality. The maidens participate in the traditional dance of the maidens in celebrating their purity. Intense counselling sessions are held prior and during the event where the older women from the communities counsel the young maidens on traditional values and how they should behave as young women. Ugu South Coast Tourism became involved with this event as a way of developing sustainable cultural and heritage events within the hinterland parts of the South Coast. The maidenÂ&#x2019;s ceremony provides an opportunity for our visitors to explore the rural parts of the South Coast by spending a whole day with the community of KwaNyuswa and to experience the life of the people of the local community. There is also ample of Zulu dancing, Zulu beer and traditional foods which the tourists can enjoy. This event has now been developed as part of the annual Sardine Festival. The Oribi Gorge Geology

HOW THE GORGE WAS FORMED? When you peer down over 300 m into the depths of Oribi Gorge you are looking back through well over 1,000 million years of Earth's history. The Mzimkulwana River bed exposes marble deposits that formed when marine deposits that had been forced deep into the crust around 1,400 million years ago were engulfed by intruding magma at a depth of more than 10 km.

The coarse-grained Oribi Gorge Granitoids formed from these huge magma masses called 'plutons' that rose through the Earth's crust about 1,000 million years ago. By 500 million years ago these rocks had been uplifted to the Earth's surface, eroded and buried by thick river deposits (Natal Group sandstones). These sandstones had also been eroded away in the Oribi Gorge area by about 350 million years ago when the area was covered by a shallow marine basin that extended across the country to the Cape. The prominent cliffs forming Oribi Gorge comprise the Msikaba Formation sandstones which accumulated as offshore sand bars on a stable continental shelf. During this period southern Africa was part of a supercontinent named Pangaea that broke up to form Gondwana, the supercontinent that included most of Africa, South America, Antarctica, Australia and India. During this period the southern African region was covered by the extensive Karoo Basin.

Plate tectonic processes caused the rifting of Gondwana after 180 million years ago forming the Indian Ocean and separating the continents as we know them today. At least 2,000 m of Karoo rocks were eroded off the Oribi Gorge area, leaving the resistant Msikaba Formation quartzitic sandstones exposed on the long-lived, ancient African land surface. Rivers crossing this landscape responded to dramatic changes in sea-level and incised deep gorges through the sandstone, preferentially eroding linear zones of weakness along fracture zones.

Protea Banks, a fossilised sandbank, is situated 7.5km out to sea from Shelly Beach. The reef, which is 6km long and 800m wide, lies at a depth of 27 and 40 meters. Suitable only for experienced divers, Protea Banks offers a thrilling shark dive, rated as South Africa s premier shark dive site and one of the top three in the world. There are three distinct dive locations within the reef, but in summer months the Southern Pinnacle is a favourite. The Northern Pinnacles, which lie at a depth of 28 to 38 metres, is dived mainly in the winter months.

THE SOUTHERN PINNACLE (26 TO 40 METRE DEPTH) Southern Caves: wide variety of game and reef fish Kingfish Gulley: This large overhanging rock is home to large shoals of Kingfish, Yellowtail, Sea Pike, Tunney, Potato Bass Sand Shark Gulley: Highlights of this sandy patch include Giant Guitar Shark, Tiger Sharks, Hammerheads & Zambesi (Bull shark) and Black Tips, depending on the season Lord of the Rings: This large rock formation is populated by a host of marine life. MASS RIDE 2012

From 8am on Sunday, riders began meeting on the

roof of the Shelly Centre for the biggest noise of all, a mass ride of several thousand motorcycles along a 34km route through Port Shepstone, Ramsgate and back to Margate. Local traffic officers turned away four-wheeled vehicles and what looked like the entire population of the area turned out with camp chairs, beach umbrellas and cooler bags to watch the parade as wave after wave of gleaming motorcycles rumbled by, taking more than an hour to pass any given point. Dont miss the Mass Parade on Sunday, 28 April 2013. It truly is a sight and sound to behold.

MARGATE PIER Margate fishing pier was damaged by heavy floods in March 2007. After a lengthy process involving several environmental assessment studies Council finally took the decision to rehabilitate rather than demolish the remaining structure. Rock Dassies enjoy basking in the sun on large rocks, particularly during mornings and late afternoons and a large colony of these social animals are often spotted near the Ramsgate tidal pool. One of the strangest facts about these gorgeous creatures is that they are in actuality the African elephant s closest living relative, in spite of the size difference! This close evolutionary relationship is deduced from similarities in the structure of the feet and teeth. Dassie babies are born during early summer after a gestation period of seven months. Some females can conceive before they are a year old. One dominant male monopolises up to 17 females in a harem group and solitary mature males live on the periphery of such harems.

The Bushbuck Trail was established by Southbroom Conservancy. Founded in 2003, the conservancy aims "to preserve in perpetuity our natural heritage of coastal forest, bush and grassland for the benefit of the creatures occurring there and for future generations of mankind.

Today the land comprising 14 hectares is managed by the Conservancy. The walking trail follows a circular route along both sides of a stream, which passes through the area. Magnificent indigenous flora and abundant birdlife exists in the area. A glimpse of a Blue Duiker, Grey Duiker and Bushbuck are sure to reward those who undertake the walk.

THE PAINTBRUSH LILY INDIGENOUS

Scadoxus puniceus Commonly known as the Blood Lily, Snake Lily or Paintbrush Lily, it is indigenous to parts of South Africa, Ethiopia and Tanzania. This bulbous plant grows in full sun or shade and flowers in spring/early summer. It is characterised by a fleshy stalk (50 to 60cm) supporting a large, dense head of scarlet flowers with bright yellow anthers. Sunbirds and weaver birds feed on the nectar, whilst monkeys and birds feed on the ripe berries. INDIGENOUS

This common snake is often encountered in the summer months on the South Coast where they can often be found actively hunting for gecko's (Hemiactylus). They are completely harmless and are often misidentified due to their green colour. Spotted Bush Snakes seem not to mind living in or near human habitation, and are unfortunately frequently killed when they are mistaken for Boomslangs or Green Mamba s. This is a huge shame as they are actually friendly snakes and bites from them are unusual. 52

The Trafalgar Marine Reserve is a tiny area extending for only 6 km along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and 500 metres offshore. Access to the reserve is on foot through the Mpenjati Reserve. A feature of the reserve is the fossilised Cretaceous trees which are embedded in the rocks. These can best be seen at low tide in the intertidal rocks near the Trafalgar access. Carpobrotus deliciosus a perennial succulent that is indigenous to the Southern and Eastern coasts of South Africa. This trailing dune plant is a hardy, quickgrowing pioneer. It can be easily identified by its bright magenta, pink or white summer flowers and triangular-shaped leaves. The sticky juice from the leaves can be applied as a handy, effective treatment for bluebottle stings.
