The Port Shepstone Lighthouse stands like a melancholy sailor, keeping his sleepless watch on the horizon, dutifully signalling to each passing ship that there is “land ahoy”. Southern Explorer Umtentweni is a beautiful family beach, with the “baby pool”, “granny’s pool” and “big sea!” With funding from local business’s the members of the conservancy recently built a spectacular whale viewing deck situated on Old St Faiths road. A +/- 4km nature walk along the banks of the Umzimkulu river is currently under construction, once completed this pathway will link the whale deck and Royston Hall. The aim of the conservancy is to protect & promote our natural heritage within the greater Umtentweni area.

Umgubho Wezintombi z q Maidens Ceremony

Umgubho Wezintombi is an annual ceremony of the maidens which is a pre cursor to Umkhosi Womhlanga eNyokeni, held at KwaNyuswa under Ezinqoleni Local Municipality. The maidens participate in the traditional dance of the maidens in celebrating their purity. Intense counselling sessions are held prior and during the event where the older women from the communities counsel the young maidens on traditional values and how they should behave as young women. Ugu South Coast Tourism became involved with this event as a way of developing sustainable cultural and heritage events within the hinterland parts of the South Coast. The maidenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ceremony provides an opportunity for our visitors to explore the rural parts of the South Coast by spending a whole day with the community of KwaNyuswa and to experience the life of the people of the local community. There is also ample of Zulu dancing, Zulu beer and traditional foods which the tourists can enjoy. This event has now been developed as part of the annual Sardine Festival. The Trafalgar Marine Reserve is a tiny area extending for only 6 km along the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast and 500 metres offshore. Access to the reserve is on foot through the Mpenjati Reserve. A feature of the reserve is the fossilised Cretaceous trees which are embedded in the rocks. These can best be seen at low tide in the intertidal rocks near the Trafalgar access.

Mpenjati caters essentially for the day visitor. The 60 hectare reserve comprises a system of interlinking wetlands, grasslands and dune forests. The most popular activities are birding, fishing, swimming, and hiking. Two picnic sites on each bank of the Mpenjati River have barbecue facilities, ablution blocks, and a chidren's playground.
