8th Annual Isle of the Arts Festival ... connecting art, artists, and art lovers to celebrate all that makes life colourful.
What better year than the Gabriola Arts Council’s 20th anniversary to choose community-driven art as the festival theme. We’re celebrating our socially, politically, and creatively active community, and enthusiastically following our Mission: to engage, enhance, and inspire the community’s cultural vitality through collaboration, leadership, and service. This Isle of the Arts Festival offers more than 65 multidisciplinary arts workshops—from painting to felting to cooking to martial arts to dancing to photography (and more!)—and 11 arts-based events over 10 days, including a community mural project with this year’s Artist in Residence. In recognition of our theme, and to inspire Gabriolans to even more socially active art, we are bringing the world-renowned, interactive, community-based textile installation All Beings Confluence to the Island all the way from Saskatchewan. We’re getting involved. Are you?

Kitty J. Heller Healing Power of Art Program
In this innovative program, professional art and drama therapists work directly with community members to address a variety of health and wellness-related issues. The goal of this program is to help people to understand and cope with physical or mental health concerns through the healing powers of artistic expression. 6:30 pm reception, 7:30 pm readings at the Surf Lodge » with Joëlle Anthony, Lorna Crozier, and Monique Gray Smith » music by Jeremy Reynolds Join us for an extravagant evening of literary delights, where we satiate all palates with delectable readings from stellar writers, delicious food from the Surf Lodge, lovely music, and incredible ocean views right from your seat. Joëlle Anthony is a writer, playwright, actress, and writing teacher. She’s the author of three novels for teens, Restoring Harmony, The Right & the Real, and Speed of Life (published under the pen name J. M. Kelly), and her debut middle grade novel, A Month of Mondays, will be out in the spring of 2017. She enjoys teaching workshops to writers of all ages, and has been the Writer in Residence at Gabriola Elementary School for six years. www.joelleanthony.com | @joellewrites Lorna Crozier is the author of 17 books of poetry and two works of non-fiction. Her most recent book is a collaboration with photographer Ian McAllister, The Wild In You. Crozier is Professor Emeritus at the University of Victoria. She has received a Governor General’s Award, the Canadian Author’s Association Award for Poetry, the National Magazine Award (Gold Medal), the Dorothy Livesay Award, and is a three-time recipient of the Pat Lowther Award. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and an Officer of the Order of Canada. Crozier received the University of Victoria’s Distinguished Professors Award and has received numerous honorary doctorates for her contributions to Canadian Literature. In 2013, Crozier received the B.C. Lieutenant-Governor General’s Lifetime Achievement Award. www.lornacrozier.ca Monique Gray Smith is a mixed heritage woman of Cree, Lakota, and Scottish descent. An award-winning author, international speaker, and sought-after consultant, she focuses on fostering paradigm shifts that emphasize the strength and resiliency of Canada’s First Peoples. Her novel Tilly: A Story of Hope and Resilience won the Burt Award for First Nation, Métis and Inuit Literature; her children’s book My Heart Fills with Happiness was on the BC Bestseller List for 37 weeks. Learn the basics of pulling loops in the ages-old craft—and art!—of traditional rug hooking. Beginners, and those who haven’t hooked in a while, will hook a one-of-a-kind mat to take home. Maia Levine inherited her Gram’s rug hooks in 1999 and has been happily rug hooking ever since. Her work has been featured in events and galleries and most recently juried into Celebration magazine. We are in unique times. Many are asking what our role is in reconciliation. This engaging, thoughtprovoking session will provide examples and insights while exploring Canada’s history through an Indigenous lens. We will look at the Four Blankets of Resilience developed by Monique through working in Indigenous communities for over 25 years. One Book, One Community: Reading & Reconciliation
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Arts Centre Join friends and community members in reading, contemplating, and engaging in the stories, history, and experiences of Canada’s First Nations. Inspired by the Truth and Reconciliation process and the 94 Calls to Action, this program is intended to build community through the shared experience of reading and discussing the same books while contributing to a country-wide process of fostering new and positive relationships with First Nations people. We are encouraging all Gabriolans to read Medicine Walk by Richard Wagamese. Available in multiple copies at the Gabriola Library and Page’s Bookstore. In this workshop Elsa will share her techniques and methods of colour mixing and developing a harmonizing colour scheme for your work. We will determine colour temperature and values using comparisons to proximity colours. Find out why there is no such thing as a “muddy” colour. This workshop is for beginners and intermediates working in any medium. 9:30 am – 11:30 am » with Joy Bremner The Métis are known for their exquisite flower beadwork. This hands-on workshop will take you on a journey through Métis beadwork history, then and now. Joy Bremner is Cree Métis, born in northern Saskatchewan. She has been doing beadwork for 45 years, and is President of the Mid-Island Métis Nation. She is one of the Nanaimo Art Gallery artists in the school, and does numerous beading, leather, and finger weaving cultural programs and classes. Learn how to create a “catalogue poem” and then incorporate selected words from your poem as graffiti into paintings using the “safety pin” motif as an expression of support for cultural and lifestyle diversity. This is a great opportunity to explore a simple poetic form and learn about using text in visual compositions. Carla Stein’s love of language led to a career in broadcast and freelance journalism. Her art and poetry has been featured in magazines and in anthologies. She is a co-founder of 15 Minutes of Infamy, a Nanaimo-based word craft performance venue. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm » with Talia Peckel Intuitive art is a way of tapping into your personal creativity free from the confines of planning, censoring, or judging—it’s an exploration based on process rather than result. Drawing and painting are the tools that lead you through this process. The goal is to get into a non-competitive, relaxing, playful state of mind—quiet your thoughts, get out of your head, and enter a state of creative flow. Talia Peckel is Gabriola’s Artist in Residence for 2017. She is a Toronto-based artist with a BFA in Drawing and Painting from OCAD University. The crane has been traditionally cherished and respected as a symbol of longevity in Japan. After Hiroshima, paper origami cranes have become a symbol of world harmony—let’s fold them together for peace. Currently living in Qualicum Beach, Shino Yoneda is a teacher from Japan. Among many other mediums and fibre-related crafts, Luanne McCollum has been weaving for 35 years. Lynn van Herwaarden is a self-taught multimedia artist who enjoys needle felting and sculpting. You’ll learn how the 12 signs of the zodiac are archetypes of human consciousness, which facilitate an understanding of both our strengths and shadow energies. Tsiporah Grignon has been studying astrology since 1974. Upon reading Pluto, The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, by Jeffrey Wolf Green in 1997, she was grateful to finally resonate with a method of synthesizing the symbols in a birth chart. This workshop is for writers and artists, whether you are an artist interested in how people describe your work, you want to add words to your works, you are a writer wondering what images your words could inspire, or you want to write about your favourite work of art. Use your own words and the writings and paintings of others to take a fresh look at how you approach your creative outlet. Naomi Beth Wakan is the Inaugural Poet Laureate of Nanaimo and Honourary Ambassador for the Federation of BC Writers. 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm » with Shino Yoneda In this workshop, you will learn two things: how to write with a Chinese brush and ink, and how Chinese characters evolved. Basic Chinese characters from nature will be introduced. At the end of the session, participants will make a booklet of Chinese characters to take home. Shino Yoneda is a teacher from Japan who has been volunteering for the 1000 Crane Projects for the Qualicum Beach community. Shino teaches origami as art and math, and Chinese Brush Writing. Create your own drypoint copperplate etchings! You’ll spend the first part of the class creating an image on copperplate using an etching needle, and then use a real etching press to create your own drypoint prints to take home. Aaramë operates el Duende Studio, a home-based printmaking studio, creating handmade serigraphs, intaglio etchings, and hand-bound books. Learn the basic steps in the Single Rhythm Swing dance. No partner is needed—you will focus on the rhythm, turns, and dance connection. Easter Bonnet Show & Parade
12:30 pm at the Gabriola Commons Field Easter Bonnets go back as far as the 1870s where it was tradition in Europe for ladies to wear flowers on their hats in celebration of spring. The tradition grew and spread to New York City where each year more than 30,000 men, women, boys, and girls show off their outrageous Easter bonnets in the world’s largest Easter Bonnet Parade. Wear your hand-decorated Easter Bonnet in Gabriola’s first-ever Easter Bonnet parade right before the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Whether you create your own Easter bonnet at the event, or join in as a spectator, it’s sure to be fabulous Easter fun! This event is a collaboration with GIRO, the Commons, and the Rod & Gun Club. GIRO is donating free materials to help you create a fabulous hat. Collect your materials at GIRO’s Easter Table on Saturday, April 8th and 15th. Anything goes! Creative Activism: A Panel Discussion
9:00 am » Facilitated by Martha Cole, Fibre Artist and All Beings Confluence Creator Can art change the world? Is creativity the key to positive social change? How do we use art to build a strong, engaged community? Explore these questions and more in a thought-provoking discussion with this group of artists who combine creative skill with political activism as they strive to make change and create a better—and more beautiful—world for all living things. Bob Bossin is a legendary figure in Canadian folk music and his 2014 book Davy the Punk won several honours including the Pinsky-Givon Prize for non-fiction. His award-winning music video Sulphur Passage played a significant role in preserving the forest of Clayoquot Sound. Laurie Burns has been privileged to live on Gabriola for the past 7 years. She is busy realizing her childhood fantasy of making things, and celebrating a life which includes time for dreaming each day. Kristin Miller has made quilts about war, prejudice, infertility, the oceanic web of life, community, and the environment. She started the UnspOILed Coast Quilt Project, and collaborated on the interactive Salish Sea Map and the Kinder Morgan Egg Challenge. Leanne Prain is a Vancouver graphic designer and author of 3 published books. She enjoys looking for the intersections between the handmade & fabricated, and the intentional & accidental.

Discover tools to put together a portfolio in a digital format using online tools, and one that can be printed, too. Learn what to include, how many images, and how to format it. Award winning artist Patt Scrivener conducts workshops for Professional Art Groups and in her own studio. Her goal is to help students discover their intuitive creativity.

In this general beginner’s course, you will learn how to navigate the online marketplace, Etsy. Know your brand, and market your items attractively online by using keywords and good descriptions to get yourself found, and look at seller stats to track performance. Mei Dunlop runs several online stores on Etsy and has sold over 20,000 items on and offline. She’s very active in her community and is currently co-planning another Etsy market.
