EPIC FUN!
Welcome to…
Ancient Greece and the 8th Annual
Gabriola Theatre Festival!
The 8th annual Gabriola Theatre Festival takes you back to where it all began, to the lively stage of Ancient Greece! Philosophers, deities, titans, actors, comedy, tragedy, masks, and wine! Greece’s cultural identity was cultivated through theatre, and this summer it will flourish on Gabriola Island, where you can enjoy eight incredible mainstage shows that explore the stuff of life: love, comedy, tragedy, politics, authors you revere, musicians you won’t forget.
“ The word ‘ theatre’ comes
from the Greeks. It means the seeing place. It is the place where people come to see the truth about life and the social situation.” —Stella Adler

Berlin 1919: Violin prodigy and composer Sophie Carmen Friedman meets expressionist painter and war veteran Walter Gramatté. She is passionate, rude, and gifted; he is witty, emotional, and compassionate. Their love affair spans 10 years, 4 cities, artistic successes and failures, and tragedy. Nearly 100 years later, the most essential record of their time together lives in her 10 violin compositions. Never The Last fuses classical music performance, movement, and text to tell the story of two people in love and the space between them. How do you say what is impossible to say? And what if you run out of time? “The highlight of the Festival … well-deserved standing ovation.” —Gabriola Sounder (on Stationary) “Local, original, and fabulous” —Vancouver Plays Delinquent Theatre creates original, elegant, subversive, and intellectual Canadian theatre for modern audiences. STATIONARY: a recession-era musical (on stage on Gabriola in 2014) won the 2015 Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for Outstanding Musical Production, Small Theatre. Delinquent shows have been performed at The Cultch, Havana Theatre, Carousel Theatre, high school classrooms, a parking lot, and a 1970s camper van. www.delinquenttheatre.com

Handmade Tale In a dystopian future, Paper Street’s improvisers struggle with gender politics and identity—and to stay alive. Inspired by the works of Margaret Atwood, this show captures her stark prose, futuristic vision, and the dark—often humorous—undercurrent that runs through her work. If you’ve ever loved a book by Atwood, this is show you cannot miss. “... poetic, lyrical, haunting, frightening ... created a dystopian world so possible as to be chilling in its verisimilitude. The moody and atmospheric improvised design was the final crowning touch—costumes, props, lighting, and sound—perfection.” —Janis Lacouvée “That was hands down the best improv I have ever seen. A huge shout out to both Brooke Cameron and Monica Ogden for absolutely stunning performances!” —Darcy L.
Under the direction of improviser and storyteller Dave Morris, Paper Street Theatre Co. creates improvisation that feels like pure theatre. By studying great playwrights and theatrical styles and performing them with no script, they set out to change what people often perceive improvisation to be. Paper Street Theatre has performed at Festivals around the world, including Vancouver, London, and Amsterdam. They have won multiple awards for their innovative style of improvisation. www.paperstreettheatre.ca

THE OTHER GUYS THEATRE COMPANY | DIRECTED BY ROSS DESPREZ ADAPTED FOR STAGE BY ROSS DESPREZ AND MARK HELLMAN PERFORMED BY MARK HELLMAN (LADYSMITH, BC) RATED: PG (ADULT THEMES) | LENGTH: 120 MINS, WITH INTERMISSION Pete Seeger was a folk singer, political activist, and a key figure in the mid20th century American folk music revival. He sang in defense of the poor, the oppressed, and the exploited; and always to enliven and encourage, to delight, and to tell tales. The Incompleat Folksinger shares, in Seeger’s own words and music, his inspirations, conflicts, his favourite songs and stories, and the kind of learning that comes from listening carefully. “Participation,” Seeger wrote. “That’s what’s going to save the human race.” “This show, an old-style hootenanny, will get you humming and singing and clapping and tearing-up at just the right times: you’ll thank yourself for taking it in.” —Baird Blackstone, BrokenLegReviews “... Hellman shines as a musician … I can’t remember a play that had me singing along so much.” —Kathleen Oliver, Georgia Straight Mark Hellman is an actor, improviser, musician, composer, puppeteer, director, and creator whose professional career spans 30 years. In the last decade he has created and produced solo works, including school-based events combining storytelling, music, and mass audience participation, and street performances combining installation, puppetry, Shakespeare, and audience interaction. His current solo project is based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest. www.otherguystheatre.ca
