Isle of the Arts Festival! Here we are, at the artsiest time of year! The sun is shining, blossoms are bursting, and creativity is spreading through artists and art lovers alike! This ten-day festival is a favourite for locals and offislanders, with more than 70 arts and culture workshops in a variety of mediums and genres including theatre, dance, music, ceramics, painting, drawing, textiles, writing, silversmithing, culinary arts, encaustic, carving, and more! And don't miss the homesteading weekend, along with seven exciting events! If ever there is a time to be inspired, this is it. Witness artists taking over the island and join in the fun! This festival is the embodiment of the Gabriola Arts Council’s mission: to engage, enhance, and inspire the community’s cultural vitality through collaboration, leadership, and service. Kitty J. Heller Healing Power of Art Program
This innovative, inspired project engages professional art and drama therapists to work directly with community members to address a variety of health and wellness-related issues and concerns. This initiative is not about creating artists; its goal is to help people to understand and cope with physical or mental health concerns through the healing powers of artistic expression. William Deverell—lawyer, environmentalist, civil rights activist, “one of Canada’s best and funniest mystery writers” (Ottawa Citizen)—is founder and honourary director of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, and the recipient of multiple literary awards, including the $50,000 Seal Prize, the Dashiell Hammett Award for Literary Excellence, and the Arthur Ellis Prize in Crime Writing; his books have been shortlisted twice for the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour. He lives on Pender Island. “ … a national treasure.” —Toronto Star www.deverell.com Dr. Sonnet L‘Abbé—poet, essayist, public speaker—is author of two poetry collections, A Strange Relief and Killarnoe. She has taught creative writing at University of British Columbia–Okanagan and at University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Studies. Dr. L’Abbé is a Creative Writing and English instructor at Vancouver Island University. One of “the most important playwrights working in Canada today” (Toronto Star), Joan MacLeod has received two Chalmers Canadian Play Awards, the Governor General’s Award, and the Siminovitch Prize for Theatre. MacLeod’s plays include Amigo’s Blue Guitar, The Hope Slide, Little Sister, The Shape of a Girl, and The Valley. MacLeod teaches in the Department of Writing at the University of Victoria. www.joanmacleod.com Gabriolan Jill Talbot studied psychology at Simon Fraser University. After sitting through lectures on rat laughter, she realized that she was in the wrong place and became a writer. Talbot’s work was shortlisted for the 2015 Matrix Lit POP Award, and has appeared in sub-Terrain. Western Edge Theatre staged a reading of her play, God in Psych Ward Pajamas in 2015. Justin Kautz, a musician and performer from Edmonton, is Gabriola's Artist in Residence. He'll start off the evening with a musical performance. Learn the basics of pulling loops in the ages-old craft of traditional rug hooking. Beginners as well as those who haven’t hooked in a while will create a one-of-a-kind pillow top or hot mat. Maia Levine inherited her Gram’s rug hooks and has been happily rug hooking ever since. Her work was included in The Chair Affair and The Atlas Affair, featured and sold in gallery shows on Vancouver Island, and in the International Rug Hooking Guild show in Victoria. Beyond the Selfie: Creating Your True Self Portrait

In this stimulating workshop, Karen will guide you to create your self-portrait, working with a variety of techniques and processes. Your portrait will reflect your inner and outer self, using narrative, history, myth, fact, and fiction. No painting or drawing experience necessary. Karen Cain established Stones Throw Studio and Gallery on Gabriola 20 years ago. A seminal trip to Japan to lecture at Tamagawa University continues to inform her work, in its interrelationship between nature and art. Round Robin Improv Patchwork
1:30 pm – 6:30 pm » with Heather Cameron Break free from measuring and straight edges! Using fun, improvisational piecing methods, participants will create a quilt top for themselves, while also contributing to others’ quilt tops— a round robin conversation in cloth! Heather Cameron is a professional visual artist working primarily in textiles. She holds a postgraduate diploma in art therapy. Heather’s skills include embroidery, spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting, crochet, rug hooking, and quilting. His work has been in numerous group and solo shows and is in private and public collections throughout North America. Margaret Callahan’s lengthy career as artist and psychotherapist includes traditional training in Japanese and Chinese brush painting, Ikebana, Sho or brushwork, watercolour, poetry, and meditation. She and her colleagues helped develop Art Therapy as a profession in British Columbia. For many, the egg signals the coming of spring after a long harsh winter. Learn the time-honoured tradition of painting beautiful eggs using batik—the wax-resist method. Participate in all the steps necessary to grow a bounty of organic food. Aaron will provide an overview of farm and garden design, preparing the land, adding nutrients, seeding, and transplanting. Along with his wife and kids, he grows almost every type of vegetable, maintains berry bushes and fruit trees, raises chickens, honeybees, and alpacas. Set in glass pieces, beads, or special stones, and add copper wire, feathers, twigs, newspaper, etc. The base process of this creative form is paper products and inexpensive and easy-to-find items from homes and nature. Many hang these creations in windows to warn birds.

Gilding the Moon

Learn to draw and gild on paper using the moon as a reference. Become familiar with the moon’s surface by using drawing, blending, and textural techniques to achieve a realistic image. Learn the process of gilding (applying gold leaf to paper), giving your moon a luminous glow.
In this day of playful creation, participants will make a unique Monster Doll full of personality and charm! Gather inspiration from kids drawings or your favourite vintage fabrics. If you can rip and tear fabric, operate a sewing machine (straight lines optional), and want to have FuN, this workshop is for you!
Natasha Broad received her BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. She placed third in a nation-wide competition to define Canadian moments. Her artwork has travelled across Canada and has been written about in several art and music magazines in Vancouver. Required Materials: Pencils F through 8B, eraser, pencil sharpener. Inspired by all things vintage and whimsical, Jennifer Lynch started her creations nearly 20 years ago, sharing her love of the arts with her family and her artistic Gabriola community. Make Your Own Drum
10:00 am – 4:00 pm » with Crystal Charlotte Easton Participants will be guided to set intention and stay in “good vibration” while making their own hand drum. Using shared tools, each participant will design and craft their own deerskin drum with clear direction and hands-on assistance. Stories and songs will be shared, as well as advice for continuing care during the drying process, painting your drum, and proper storage. Crystal Charlotte Easton was taught to nurture her creativity from a young age, and has produced a lifetime of personally reflective and symbolic artworks from her mixed Native and Canadian heritage. Learn the basics of writing an intriguing mystery novel. Over two days, participants will be guided to accomplish a great deal of writing, and will better understand the genre. Maybe you’ll even be tempted to continue writing what you’ve started!
Participants will explore together the beautiful rhythms of West Africa, with an emphasis on group listening, playing skills, and—of course—fun! Participants should have a grasp of the 3 basic sounds of the drum.
George Szanto has written or co-written a dozen books, including eight mystery novels. Before retiring, George taught at the University of California and McGill University. Participants will learn techniques including layout and design of three different zine styles using a scanner, photocopier, and other tools. Sam Morgan is a graduate of the Emily Carr University of Art and Design. In addition to his work in multimedia painting, collage, and sculpture, Sam has been making and distributing his collection of zines since the early 2000s, and is part of a thriving zine-trading community.
