Not only has the Gabriola Theatre Festival made a name for itself in British Columbia’s theatre world, but it is also known as the place to come for quality emerging and professional theatre productions, appreciative audiences, its multi-disciplinary nature, fun family times, and its distinct Gulf Island vibe. We have so much more to share with you this year! Theatre that pushes boundaries, makes you laugh, makes you cry, and makes you question all you thought was real. And don’t miss the festival favourites this year! We’ve brought back the FREE Outdoor Stage to entertain you before, between, and after mainstage shows. Then there’s the Lions Pancake Breakfast, Street Art+Fair, a fun Kids’ Corner, a family puppet show, and the opening ceremony which will celebrate the generosity of local restaurant, Robert’s Place! Voyage to Gabriola Gabriola Island is a 25-minute ferry ride from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. Float planes land in Nanaimo Harbour, just adjacent to the Gabriola ferry terminal. Or fly by float plane directly into Silva Bay. If you’re coming from off-island, why not make a weekend of it? Every year at the Opening Ceremonies of the Gabriola Theatre Festival, we honour a community member, business, or organization that has made a significant contribution to the Gabriola Arts Council, the Theatre Festival, and the community at large. These contributions take many forms: enhancing the creative and cultural life on Gabriola; financial and/or in-kind support; volunteer time; and more. The first recipient of the Community Spirit Award was the inimitable Antony Holland, after whom the Theatre Festival’s main stage tent is named. The owners and staff of Village Food Market (2015) and Arbutus Home and Building Centre (2016) have also received the award. This year we celebrate Robert Stutzman, David Chapman, Paul Robinson and all the wonderful, positive staff at Robert’s Place who—year after year—offer their great food, fantastic service, and generous support to our festivals and events. From glorious plates of food to feed artists and art supporters, to sharing the meeting space, to friendly, generous service in the restaurant—the sky is truly the limit with Robert and his team! And the support doesn’t end with GAC. A Fashionable Tale! Join us for The GABE Shop’s third annual unconventional fashion show. You’ll be dazzled by spectacular attire and tickled by funny tales from the closet. The GABE Shop, a boutique thrift store owned by The Gabriola Auxiliary for Island Health Care, raises funds for island health care initiatives. Mata Hari Movement, mystique, and sexuality collide in this innovative and compelling

work of physical theatre that examines the life of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle MacLeod, otherwise known as the iconic Mata Hari. Mata Hari—a Dutch burlesque dancer during World War I—was accused of being a spy and executed by firing squad. Her sealed trial documents are scheduled to be declassified by the French Army in 2017, exactly 100 years after her execution. This show investigates Mata Hari’s controversial life using both movement and text, and explores how identity, sexuality, and performance intertwine. Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences with its effortless wit and humour. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of potentially made-up words hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! One Good Marriage Steph and Stewart are celebrating their first anniversary. She’s an English teacher;

he’s a high-school librarian. At the heart of the occasion, though, is a terrible sorrow. You see, Steph and Stewart arrived home from their blissful honeymoon to find that something terrible had happened. Darkly hilarious and deeply moving, this drama moves from pathos to humour and back again as a tragic story is revealed. A vivid portrait of two ordinary people to whom an extraordinary event has occurred, One Good Marriage speaks to our need for community. The company previously produced the World Premiere of MUSE, written and directed by Mike Mackenzie, at the Tarragon Theatre Extra Space. One Good Marriage marked the first production by the company in Vancouver, and was part of the 2016 Vancouver Fringe Festival’s Dramatic Works Series at the Cultch’s Culture Lab.

In this whirlwind musical comedy and two-man spoof, Chris Adams and Erik Gow

play over 30 characters. A pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new project—a splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass not-entirely historically accurate epic musical, in hope that one of the producers in attendance will take them to Broadway—fulfilling their ill-advised dreams. “ Hysterically funny! Chris Adams, a UVIC grad, has performed in some of the greatest theatres across Canada including The Globe in Regina, The Centaur in Montreal, and Vertigo in Calgary, and has produced over 10 musicals over the last 5 years. Gutenberg! The Muscial! marks the 11th musical Chris Adams has produced over the past 5 years. Erik Gow, a Studio 58 grad, and a performer/teacher/multi-instrumentalist, has worked with such companies as The Arts Club, Gateway Theatre, TUTS, Chemainus Theatre Festival, Axis Theatre, and many more. This professional dynamic duo has come together under the guidance of Axis Theatre’s Chris McGregor to present Bud and Doug’s ode to Broadway. A master in physical comedy, McGregor brings years of experience and has directed over 100 shows across Canada.
