Opening Ceremonies:
And the Community Spirit Award Goes To… ! Every year at the Opening Ceremonies of the Gabriola Theatre Festival, we honour a community member, business, or organization that has made a significant contribution to the Gabriola Arts Council, the Theatre Festival, and the community at large. These contributions take many forms: enhancing the creative and cultural life on Gabriola; financial and/or in-kind support; volunteer time; and more. The first recipient of the Community Spirit Award was the inimitable Antony Holland, after whom the Theatre Festival’s main stage tent is named. The owners and staff of Village Food Market (2015) and Arbutus Home and Building Centre (2016) have also received the award. This year we celebrate Robert Stutzman, David Chapman, Paul Robinson and all the wonderful, positive staff at Robert’s Place who—year after year—offer their great food, fantastic service, and generous support to our festivals and events. From glorious plates of food to feed artists and art supporters, to sharing the meeting space, to friendly, generous service in the restaurant—the sky is truly the limit with Robert and his team! And the support doesn’t end with GAC. Robert goes out of his way to support all kinds of organizations on Gabriola—they’re great corporate citizens, an important community employer, and an essential stop for empty stomachs.
Thank you, Robert’s Place! Join community members, the Ken Capon Memorial Marching Band, and representatives of groups and organizations to publicly thank Robert’s Place for all they do. Then head into the Antony Holland Mainstage Tent for the first of eight mainstage shows! FRIDAY | 1:00 pm – 2:15 pm | AT THE FESTIVAL HUB | FREE!

One Man
FRIDAY, AUGUST 18TH | 2:30 pm
Pride & Prejudice It is a truth universally acknowledged that an actor in possession of a woman’s
story must be in want of a wife to help him adapt it. Charles Ross, the One Man Star Wars, and visual artist Lisa Hebden tackle the greatest romantic comedy ever, with all the intrigue, dancing, proposals, and lace (did we mention the lace?). A&E’s Pride & Prejudice is being given the one man once over. We hope to leave you rolling in the aisles—but not Jane Austen rolling over in her grave. “ A new star is blazing … This show combines phenomenal skill—seamless transitions and masterful singing of incidental music—with the innocence of an eight-year-old at play. ” —Colin Thomas, Georgia Straight “ Impressive? You bet. Go early—the weekend lineups were huge. ” ★★★★★ —Adrian Chamberlain, Victoria Times Colonist “ Lord, we have a winner! ” ★★★★★—Edmonton Sun “ Condensing Tolkien’s 1,350-page masterpiece into a one-hour work of solo genius ” ★★★★★ —Bartley Kives, Winnipeg FreePress (One Man Lord of the Rings) Chicken for Supper Productions has produced One Man Star Wars, One Man Lord of the Rings, Sev, One Man 80’s Blank Tape, and One Man Dark Knight: A Batman Parody over the last 15 years. Charles Ross is a BFA graduate of the University of Victoria, Lisa Hebden is an award-winning visual artist and writer, and Danette Boucher is a Jessie Award-nominated actor, playwright, director, historian, and artistic director of Histrionics Productions. www.onemanstarwars.com

It’s the 70s and Mrs. Washington, a black caregiver, is hired to nurse
Sam Horowitz, a bigoted Jewish widower who has been mugged and is a stroke patient. She is a determined tyrant who puts up with his racist attitudes while bullying the insulting Horowitz through rehab and into a stormy but mutually beneficial relationship. When Sam’s daughter tries to move him from his home, the two of them must prevail. This play is a period piece reflecting the racial attitudes of the 1970s while exploring contemporary issues and addressing the struggle many seniors face in maintaining the right to make their own decisions. “ Once again, Bema Productions illuminates the power to be found in ‘ordinary’ lives. ” —Janis La Couvée (From Door to Door, Fringe 2016) “ … a smart, funny play. ”—Adrian Chamberlain, Victoria Times Colonist Born during Congregation Emanu-El Synagogue’s 2013 arts festival, Bema Productions is now in its fourth successful season. Winner of the Best Drama Award at Victoria’s 2016 Fringe Festival, Bema believes both in the power of theatre and in helping their community by supporting other nonprofit organizations. Mata Hari Movement, mystique, and sexuality collide in this innovative and compelling
work of physical theatre that examines the life of Margaretha Geertruida Zelle MacLeod, otherwise known as the iconic Mata Hari. Mata Hari—a Dutch burlesque dancer during World War I—was accused of being a spy and executed by firing squad. Her sealed trial documents are scheduled to be declassified by the French Army in 2017, exactly 100 years after her execution. This show investigates Mata Hari’s controversial life using both movement and text, and explores how identity, sexuality, and performance intertwine. The performance includes Indonesian dance theatre and text, much of it Mata Hari’s own words, in French with English subtitles. “ This story is sexy, it’s compelling, it’s courageous ...” —Darren Wiesner, Hollywood North Magazine “ The mystique of Mata Hari ... has endured through generations. As a woman who named herself, openly discussed her sexual desire, and played by her own—and not society’s—rules, she’s been often hailed as a femme fatale and even a mother of modern feminism. ” —Yasmine Shemesh, Vancity Buzz

Jeff Leard’s award-winning original sci-fi solo comedy has everything you’d
expect from a big budget silver screen spectacular: Action…romance…socialist undertones…cool special effects…a stool. Zach Zultana works on a lonely mining colony orbiting Jupiter. He spends his days refining ore transported in from the asteroid belt and sleeps in a 12'x12' room, but all of that changes after a chance encounter with a mysterious woman. Before long Zach becomes the face of a revolution as the miners rise up against their oppressive boss. “ The best one man show at the Fringe ” ★★★★★ —Edmonton Sun “ A veritable comic dervish ” ★★★★ —Edmonton Journal “ Reminiscent of a young Robin Williams ” ★★★★ —London Free Press “ Spaceballs meets Erin Brockovich ” ★★★★ —CBC Manitoba Jeff Leard is a writer and performer based out of Vancouver. The 25 th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee Winner of the TONY and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual
Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences with its effortless wit and humour. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home life, the tweens spell their way through a series of potentially made-up words hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. “ The fun comes from the ridiculous nature of the words the kids have to spell, their unique styles of approaching the spelling, their inner turmoil and especially the interactions—mostly hostile—among them. It’s always fun to try to guess who’s going to win. Four audience members are also chosen to participate, and that wild card can be the most fun of all. ” —Jerry Wasserman, Vancouver Sun “ … some days you just need a good laugh. There is currently no better antidote for your … anxiety than the Fighting Chance Productions presentation of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. ” —Mark Robins, VancouverPresents.com Fighting Chance Productions arrived on the Vancouver stages in January 2007. Founded by Artistic Director Ryan Mooney, Fighting Chance started as an opportunity for young theatre artists to present their skills on a stage where their age or experience did not limit them, but ultimately helped them gain on-the-job experience. Since that time, Fighting Chance Productions has grown to be one of the leaders among young independent theatre companies in Vancouver www.fightingchanceproductions.ca

RESOUNDING SCREAM THEATRE IN ASSOCIATION WITH ALLEY THEATRE DIRECTED BY MARISA EMMA SMITH | ASSISTANT DIRECTED BY STEPHANIE HENDERSON WRITTEN BY VERONIQUE WEST | PERFORMED BY ALEXANDRA LAINFIESTA RATED: PG | LENGTH: 60 MINUTES (NO INTERMISSION)
Casting circles are used to conjure dangerous and unpredictable forces. In Marrow,
two estranged sisters—a bulimia survivor and a grad student researching witchcraft trials—cast a circle. As they delve into their conflicted past, they expose each other’s fault-lines. Marrow is an imaginative and emotionally charged drama inspired by playwright Veronique West’s personal survival from anorexia and fascination with witchcraft. It subverts eating disorder stereotypes with playfulness, power and compassion. “ A play that does more than entertain, it challenges the audience to think … Anybody who goes to see Marrow is in for a thought-provoking treat. ” —SAD Magazine “ Marrow explores eating disorders with honesty and nuance. There are no easy answers here, no easy definitions of feminism, and no easy ideas as to what it means to be a victim, what it means to be a survivor. ” —Room Magazine “ Two sisters explore their tensions, traumas, and failures in an atmospheric and heart-wrenching performance … Marrow spoke to me deeply. ” —Plank Magazine Resounding Scream Theatre challenges audiences and inspires conversation by producing theatre that questions how our society has been shaped. Past projects include Listen to Me (Undercurrents Festival), Back Away Slowly (with Theatre Replacement), Hive: The New Bees, and Plunge (emerging artists festival).
Alley Theatre stages socially-conscious stories that are seldom told in an accessible, empowering, and surprising context. The company has received five Jessie Richardson Award nominations and is a winner of The Cultchivating Award.

One Good Marriage Steph and Stewart are celebrating their first anniversary. She’s an English teacher;
he’s a high-school librarian. At the heart of the occasion, though, is a terrible sorrow. You see, Steph and Stewart arrived home from their blissful honeymoon to find that something terrible had happened. Darkly hilarious and deeply moving, this drama moves from pathos to humour and back again as a tragic story is revealed. A vivid portrait of two ordinary people to whom an extraordinary event has occurred, One Good Marriage speaks to our need for community. One Good Marriage won the NOW Magazine award for Outstanding New Play at the 2002 Summerworks Festival. “ A dazzling and daring piece of writing. ” —Toronto Star “ Mesmerizing, cathartic, powerful … an absurdly funny yet moving look at our oh-so-human need for community. ” —NOW Magazine “ Ese Atawo will make you laugh and she will break your heart. ” —Georgia Straight “ This show is an absolute must see. ” —Mooney on Theatre Fork In The Road Theatre was founded in 2005 by director Mike Mackenzie as a way to showcase Canadian plays that speak of the human experience. CHRIS ADAMS PRESENTS | DIRECTED BY CHRIS MCGREGOR MUSICALLY DIRECTED BY JENNY ANDERSEN | WRITTEN BY ANTHONY KING AND SCOTT BROWN | CHOREOGRAPHED BY LYNDSEY BRITTEN | PERFORMED BY CHRIS ADAMS AND ERIK GOW RATED: PG | LENGTH: 90 MINUTES (INCLUDES INTERMISSION)
In this whirlwind musical comedy and two-man spoof, Chris Adams and Erik Gow
play over 30 characters. A pair of aspiring playwrights perform a backers’ audition for their new project—a splashy musical about printing press inventor Johann Gutenberg. With an unending supply of enthusiasm, Bud and Doug sing all the songs and play all the parts in their crass not-entirely historically accurate epic musical, in hope that one of the producers in attendance will take them to Broadway—fulfilling their ill-advised dreams. “ Hysterically funny! Writers Anthony King and Scott Brown produced an uproarious script—funnier than The Drowsy Chaperone ” —Associated Press “ It seems that Monty Python’s whole troupe has taken possession of two New York naïfs, aspiring musical-theatre writers Bud and Doug, in this goofy and inspired parody of Broadway bombast. ” —The New Yorker
Chris Adams, a UVIC grad, has performed in some of the greatest theatres across Canada including The Globe in Regina, The Centaur in Montreal, and Vertigo in Calgary, and has produced over 10 musicals over the last 5 years. Gutenberg! The Muscial! marks the 11th musical Chris Adams has produced over the past 5 years. Erik Gow, a Studio 58 grad, and a performer/teacher/multi-instrumentalist, has worked with such companies as The Arts Club, Gateway Theatre, TUTS, Chemainus Theatre Festival, Axis Theatre, and many more. This professional dynamic duo has come together under the guidance of Axis Theatre’s Chris McGregor to present Bud and Doug’s ode to Broadway. A master in physical comedy, McGregor brings years of experience and has directed over 100 shows across Canada.
